Gitmo Teen Soldier Given Eight-Year Sentence |
| By: Jeff Kaye Sunday October 31, 2010 7:31 pm |
Breaking, 5:30pm. After 8 hours of deliberations by the seven-person military jury, the jury reached a decision, sentencing Omar Khadr to prison for 40 years. The decision is subject, reportedly, to the plea deal made with Khadr and his legal team, whereby the young man confessed to murder and other crimes, for a promise of [...]
Failed Mail Bomb Attack Shows Vulnerabilities With Cargo Screening |
| By: David Dayen Sunday October 31, 2010 7:00 pm |
A few updates in the thus-far failed mail bomb plot that the President spoke about on Friday. (By the way, notice how that wasn’t a feature of this midterm election campaign whatsoever, that the fear card was never played, even with the announcement of an attack on the Friday before the election?)

David Broder Reveals Village Bloodlust for More War |
| By: David Dayen Sunday October 31, 2010 5:00 pm |

The Best of All Possible Worlds: Beltway Journos Use Sham Logic to Obscure Political Pain of Health Reform |
| By: Jon Walker Sunday October 31, 2010 4:00 pm |
In the last few days, several bloggers – among them Jon Cohn and Ezra Klein — have written faulty defenses of the health care bill. They used theoretical, counterfactual alternatives in defense of the health care legislation they’ve supported, calling to mind Voltaire’s classic, Candide. In it, Voltaire heavily mocks the extreme optimism of Pangloss, who concludes all is good no matter how terrible things are because we live in “the best of all possible worlds.”
FDL Book Salon Welcomes Jay Weiner, This Is Not Florida: How Al Franken Won The Minnesota Senate Recount |
| By: Phoenix Woman Sunday October 31, 2010 1:59 pm |
Jay Weiner’s book is to my knowledge the first on a race and recount that captured the nation’s (or at least the press’) attention throughout much of 2009. Unfortunately, I suspect that it is likely to be the only one, as the media has long since moved on to other things. This is a pity as the race was too big a happening to be covered fully by just one book, even one written by MinnPost’s Jay Weiner.
Citi’s Fear |
| By: emptywheel Sunday October 31, 2010 1:16 pm |
I wanted to return to a detail I mentioned in yesterday’s book salon. As I noted, in his book on the auto bailout, Steven Rattner described Citi as being worried during the Chrysler negotiations that retail customers would retaliate if Citi played hard ball.
Obama and the Constitutionality of DADT and Other LGBT Discrimination |
| By: bmaz Sunday October 31, 2010 12:30 pm |
There simply is no other interpretation to President Obama’s dithering, statements and positions on LGBT rights. The Constitution and its fundamental equality, due process and first amendment protections is not a political issue football to be tossed around, nor is it properly enforced by degree of popularity in the latest Gallup poll trendline.
