I’m not trying to be too alarming but we don’t have much time to get repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell passed in the defense authorization bill. Things are looking very bleak for passage of the defense authorization bill, at least for this year. And who knows how many seats we’ll have next year? People have been sold a whole bunch of lies on this repeal bill, starting from the fact that it’s not repeal itself – it just allows repeal to happen if certain conditions are met and then three people sign off on it. Yet, we’ve heard the loud pronouncements that “DADT is dead” on certain leftist political blogs.

Stimulus Is Not a Bad Word and John M. Keynes Was Smarter than John Boehner |
| By: Scarecrow Saturday September 11, 2010 6:00 pm |
Three (sorta) “positive” stories about economic stimulus all came together in the last couple of days. They suggest that even when the forces of darkness are trying their hardest to make us stupid, it’s possible we can actually sort out the truth.

Justice, what do you care about justice. You don’t even care whether you’ve got the right men or not. All you know is you’ve lost something and someone’s got to be punished. The Ox-Bow Incident.

FDL Book Salon Welcomes Bruce Fein, American Empire Before the Fall |
| By: Glenn Greenwald Saturday September 11, 2010 1:58 pm |
There’s no doubting the conservative bona fides of Bruce Fein. A high-level Justice Department lawyer in the Reagan administration in the 1980s and previously a resident scholar with the Heritage Foundation, he is a long-time advocate for uncompromising right-wing political principles.

The President’s statement at the Pentagon on September 11 mirrored in many ways his impromptu statement at yesterday’s press conference against Islamophobia and being captured by fear. Let me quote at length (I’ve taken a paragraph out of this, but I’ll return to it).

You Love Them Not Because You Like Them |

On this ninth anniversary of 9/11, there will be politicians offering their thoughts, as well as more than a few preachers. My thoughts, though, turned to the late Buck O’Neil. Those who flew the planes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania left a lasting monument to their hate. How we reacted — and continue to react — to the events of 9/11 speaks volumes about who we are. For myself, when I preach tomorrow morning, I can only hope to be as eloquent and powerful and inspiring as Buck.

With Kagan On SCOTUS, We Are Still Down A Justice |
| By: bmaz Saturday September 11, 2010 7:50 am |
With the long anticipated retirement of Justice John Paul Stevens, it was important for President Obama to appoint and get confirmed a new justice so there would not only be a full compliment of justices on the court, but to insure the ideological balance of the court was maintained. By selecting Elena Kagan, Obama certainly did not pick the most qualified person for the job, nor did he maintain the ideological balance particularly as Kagan undoubtedly moved the court to the right at least to some degree.
