Taking on Trickle-Down Economics: The Public Rejects Conservative Tax Cuts as a Means of Economic Stimulus

By: Anthony DiMaggio Thursday September 16, 2010 2:00 pm

The public is widely opposed to the idea of extending tax cuts for the rich. One wouldn’t know this, however, from listening to Republicans in the media who frame the public as conservative on economic issues.

The Stars Have Aligned: The Time Is Now for the DREAM Act

By: kyledeb Thursday September 16, 2010 1:25 pm

If you haven’t been on facebook, twitter, or following the news, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced yesterday that he would be introducing the DREAM Act as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act. Univision anchor Jorge Ramos tweeted last week that Reid wanted to move the DREAM Act before November. Now we know how Reid wants to move it. The DREAM Act could come up for a vote as early as Tuesday of next week.

Housing Falls Off the Cliff as Foreclosures Continue Unabated

By: David Dayen Thursday September 16, 2010 12:40 pm

There are enough homes in delinquency that the properties entering the system slowing will have no material effect on foreclosures increasing. And that shows no signs of abating. What’s more, banks are basically forbearing the first couple months of delinquency, artificially lowering the number of homes entering foreclosure because they don’t want to initiate the process.

Tim Kaine’s Idea of an Exciting Announcement: A New Logo

By: Blue Texan Thursday September 16, 2010 10:30 am

So yesterday, I noticed this item at CNN. “Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine plans to make what’s being billed as a major announcement for the party Wednesday.” And what was this big exciting something? A new logo and tagline.

NeoCons Make Unapologetic Call for McCarthyism Against Muslims

By: emptywheel Thursday September 16, 2010 9:31 am

Here’s the latest stunt from the NeoCons: they unabashedly admit they intend to make shit up to sow fear of Muslims, and part of that will be targeting Muslims for deportation.

WA Ballot Measures Polling Under 50% – So Much for That Anti-Tax, Less Government Wave

By: Jon Walker Thursday September 16, 2010 8:45 am

People have tried to depict the Tea Parties as a grassroots movement emerging from a national wave of anger about being overtaxed, combined with a strong desire to shrink the government. Some will no doubt claim that if Republicans win big this November, it is because Americans really want lower taxes and much less government. But the polling data in Washington State, at least, doesn’t seem to bear that out.

Warren Appointment: Encouraging, But a Big Incomplete

By: David Dayen Thursday September 16, 2010 7:55 am

This “interim director” position became an option because of how Dodd-Frank was written, but it’s somewhat incomplete. It allows for Treasury to have all the powers of the director (specifically the Treasury Secretary), which he can delegate. But the powers given to Treasury in the transition period are somewhat incomplete. They may or may not involve rulemaking and the like. It looks like Treasury can pick up where other agencies charged with consumer protection left off, but to go beyond that and make new rules based on Dodd-Frank, it’s unclear.
