Obama Mocks Public Option Supporters

By: Jane Hamsher Friday September 17, 2010 1:16 pm

Nobody in the history of electoral politics, and I mean nobody, believes that telling people to “get over it” will get them to the polls. (Well, nobody but Spiro Agnew.) And you can bet your bottom dollar that come 2012, when Obama’s own electoral future is on the line, that won’t be his message.

If Tax Cuts for Millionaires Could Be “Better Spent,” Then Spend It

By: David Dayen Friday September 17, 2010 12:34 pm

What if we plowed that money from the tax cuts for the rich into a payroll tax cut for everyone, a “people’s tax cut,” if you will?

Congratulations and Good Luck to Elizabeth Warren

By: emptywheel Friday September 17, 2010 11:45 am

I’m cautiously optimistic with the dual appointment of Elizabeth Warren to be Assistant to the President to work at Treasury to set up the Consumer Financial Protection Board. Progressives finally won something from this Administration. Maybe. But we’re only going to be able to keep it if we continue to make noise.

Mitt Romney Accuses Obama of “Insulting” Israel, Touts Iraq as a “Success”

By: Blue Texan Friday September 17, 2010 10:30 am

Surely what’s needed right now is an even more bellicose foreign policy. Hot wars in 3 countries just isn’t enough to keep us “safe.”

Celebrity Organizing: Stewart, Colbert, Gaga

The best political organizers in America who aren’t getting Koch money happen to be Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Lady Gaga.

Petraeus and Obama: Smell the Love

By: Spencer Ackerman Friday September 17, 2010 8:45 am

Leaving aside the tenor of their working relationship, the basic point is correct: by putting Gen. David Petraeus in charge, President Obama sided with Petraeus’s interpretation of July 2011 for the mission in Afghanistan.

Elizabeth Warren, in Her Own Words

By: David Dayen Friday September 17, 2010 7:50 am

We’ll see what the announcement brings, but there is a good deal of confusion surrounding Treasury’s ability to stand up the agency based on how the law was drafted. You can interpret it as saying that they have full ability to regulate and write new rules, or that they basically have administrative capability and the transferring powers from separate agencies. There’s probably enough in the way of structural planning to do before rulemaking gets going, but Dodd-Frank didn’t exactly make this easy. Warren makes it pretty clear: her task is to “get the CFPB started.”

WH Again Assures CIA Wrongdoing Won’t Be Prosecuted; But Who Has JSOC’s Back?

By: emptywheel Friday September 17, 2010 6:55 am

Former Bush administration National Security and Central Intelligence Agencies director Gen.Michael Hayden has another tired whine at CNN about Obama’s treatment of the torture program. The entire logic of the piece is predictably silly.

Where Have All the Deficit Hawks Gone?

By: Jon Walker Friday September 17, 2010 6:04 am

Since we have started a public debate about whether or not to extend Bush’s massive, deficit-ballooning tax cuts to millionaires, the same deficit hawks who sent up trial balloons about cutting Social Security and other benefits have been very quiet. Very interesting, yes?

Early Morning Swim: Karl Rove Repents for Slamming Christine O’Donnell, Kisses Rush Limbaugh’s Ring

By: Blue Texan Friday September 17, 2010 4:47 am

Will any living Republican ever dare cross El Rushbo? I mean, wouldn’t it be nice to see just one of them say, “Suck it, Limbaugh!”?
