In just six weeks, Arizonans will vote on Prop 203: an initiative that will bring medical marijuana to Arizona. But not if the Arizona Cardinals have anything to do with it. The NFL football team donated $10,000 of the team’s money last week to opponents of Prop 203 and medical marijuana in Arizona. We need to fight back the Cardinals’ attacks on cancer patients. Click here to sign Just Say Now’s petition condemning the Cardinals for standing between Arizona patients and their doctors.

Republicans Reveal Their Plans to Make Americans Sicker, Poorer, Less Secure |
| By: Scarecrow Tuesday September 21, 2010 1:35 pm |
There are lots of things Congress could have done and might still do to fix the problems and improve the benefits of the law. Just google, e.g., “Firedoglake, Jon Walker, health reform.” These measures would actually improve health care, expand and improve coverage, or reduce its costs. But nothing, absolutely nothing the Republicans are proposing would improve health care in America.
Cloture Fails on Defense Authorization Bill as Republican Obstructionism of DADT, DREAM Act Holds |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday September 21, 2010 1:04 pm |
The Senate failed to move forward to consider the defense authorization bill today, imperiling the compromise over repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, moving forward of the DREAM Act, and hundreds of other issues relating to the military. Republicans held a united front against consideration of the bill, basing their opposition mainly on the lack of an open amendment process.
Durbin on Tax Cuts, Deficit: No Deficit Reduction Until Unemployment Rate Lowers |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday September 21, 2010 12:20 pm |
Durbin: Congress shouldn’t make cutting the federal deficit a greater priority than creating jobs until the U.S. unemployment rate falls to 9 percent or lower for at least half a year, the second-ranking Senate Democrat said in an interview.

Following the orders of their Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, both Susan Collins (R-ME) and George Voinovich (R-OH) announced they will join the GOP filibuster led by John McCain (R-AZ) of the Defense Authorization bill, making today’s initial steps to repeal of Don’t-Ask-Don’t-Tell very precarious.

Insurance Industry Taking Every Possible Advantage of Affordable Care Act |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday September 21, 2010 9:45 am |
In addition to having to fend off the slow chipping away of the health care law by the GOP, especially if they gain power over one or both houses of Congress, Democrats have to deal with the foxes they left in the henhouse, who are systematically working to preserve their own profits at the expense of consumers.
Washington Responds to Afghanistan Failures with More Petty Political Posturing |
| By: Jim White Tuesday September 21, 2010 9:00 am |
So, even though conditions in Afghanistan are deteriorating rapidly, it is far more important to the politicians in Washington to prepare for the midterm elections than to evaluate their clearly failing strategy. How many more meaningless deaths will there be in Afghanistan while Washington handles its highest priority?
Senate GOP Strips Murkowski of Her Leadership Post |
| By: David Dayen Tuesday September 21, 2010 8:15 am |
Buried in a story about Republican angst over Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s write-in campaign in Alaska is a nugget about the GOP leadership fulfilling a promise — Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) removed Murkowski as vice chairwoman of the Senate Republican Conference.
Crucial Vote on DREAM Act Expected This Afternoon |

One of the most compelling elements of this political drama has been the interaction between The LGBT movement and the migrant youth movement. What to an outsider might be perceived as two unrelated constituencies, perhaps even hostile to each other, have been working long before this moment to build unity and solidarity. It is one thing to believe in the truth that we are all woven into a “single garment of destiny.” It is another to live that truth and act on it. The migrant youth movement and the LGBT movement having been living and acting on that truth, as we all should. My freedom is tied up with the freedom of everyone else in the universe, and today we have a chance to set close to a million people free.
