Main guy I’d be working with is PI on one that is a subject I’m very interested in; emailed him about some innovation done by Sun a few years back that is germane to the subject.

Sorry to intrude on LLN, but I just got a big shock, and didn’t know who else to ask.

I’ve ordered stuff from Amazon.com many, many, many times without problems. But last week I ordered a DVD of “Jack The Ripper” a TV movie made in the late 1980′s IIRC, and I wanted to watch it.

I ordered it. Paid. My American Express was charged. I got the DVD today in the mail.

I put in my player, and everytime I do it comes up with a message “Region Error: Playback is not authorized in your region. Please eject the disc.”

This was a film made for American TV, starring Michael Caine. The package that arrived today looked “real” in that it looked exactly like what I would’ve expected, it had a pic of Michael Caine on the cover, with the title, etc.

But it won’t play. I’ve been ripped off, haven’t I??? Dammit this pisses me off. I only ask because before I go off the deep end with Amazon dot com, I wondered if anyone else has seen this and maybe it’s an error that’s my fault. I’ve never seen it, all I know is my DVD, that I paid for, won’t play. So I’m guessing I’ve been ripped off.

I love this movie — and I used to sport green “divine decadence” in nail polish myself.

Any word on China doing a trade war with rare elements? Wind turbines, hybrid cars, missiles etc could all be effected. The Chinese bought one company took the tech fired the workers and moved it all to China Thomas Friedman’s idea about free trade producing high tech jobs in America seems to have left us vulnerable to a trade war.

Fine a little worried about our stock market but thats nothing new. China has stopped selling to Japan it seems they might have slowed or stopped selling to us but all those workers miners and manufactures I doubt China said go take a vacation.
China could green up their economy huge with wind turbines and hybrid cars if they start using all their rare earth elements for their market.
Just how many Wind mills and hybrid cars could they make or sell for export cutting Japan and us out of the loop?
Our green companies would be stuck bidding for rare earth elements in a market with much decreased supply.
This could kill our emerging green power economy.

China knows we are fighting two wars we can’t afford a third or a forth North Korea has always wanted South Korea back another year or two of war and we will be to broke to stop them if we are not already to broke.

Another energy sparked day of short,intense conversations with many people. I highly recommend Bungee Jumping into Civil Liberties as a way to re-energize on a smaller, local level.
I thought I’d get a few dicard flowers to set around the stage from the florists. I think I’m going to have a van load.
Which is very cool. The kids can decorate the park ampitheater and we’ll clean up after. Strewing flowers is good.

In reality, the recent moves in the yuan have been paltry and both sides know it. That’s a tough battle to get started for us though, considering China has a number of different angles to retaliate from. Not only that, but it also has export taxes ranging from 15% to 25% on the metals. That’s the kind of regulation that makes it quite difficult for companies in other countries to produce things like solar wafers cheaply. Considering cost is one of the biggest barriers holding alternative energies from taking off, the U.S. administration will want to be very careful where it steps. An ominous example comes from an incident earlier this month when a Chinese fishing trawler collided with Japanese coast guard boats, which resulted in the capture of several Chinese fishermen. Although the details aren’t confirmed, word has it China halted, or at least threatened to halt, its exports of rare earth metals to Japan, which soon released the fisherman.

I figure some of it is bc the dollar has lost value, so it takes more dollars to buy an ounce of gold, doh, but some of it also means that coin owners will sell their gold at these prices if they’re needy. The gold/silver coin market is always the canary in the coal mine. Gold is gold: an ounce of gold is always an ounce of gold.
