MSNBC is reporting that the White House is confirming what pretty much all Washington watchers have known for a fortnight: Rahm Emanuel will resign his postion as President Obama’s Chief of Staff to run for mayor of Chicago.
Pete Rouse, currently a senior advisor to the president, will be named the new Chief of Staff on an acting basis. Rouse was Obama’s CoS when the president was Illinois senator; he previously held the same job for South Dakota Sen. Tom Daschle.
Update: The New York Times Caucus blog reports Rouse will not be just an “acting” CoS:
Mr. Rouse will not be named interim chief of staff, but rather will formally take over Mr. Emanuel’s title. While Mr. Rouse has expressed reservations about holding the chief of staff job for an extended period, he has agreed to do the job – for now.
Mr. Rouse has a low profile outside the White House and across Washington, but he is extraordinarily close to the president and is respected inside the West Wing and on Capitol Hill, where he was known as the “101st Senator” during his role as an adviser to Senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota, then the Democratic leader.
Update: Robert Gibbs is currently announcing that the president will have a “personnel announcement” tomorrow at 11:05 AM eastern time.

Gibbs on tv now, doesn’t want to talk about it. Only saying that there will be a personnel announcement tomorrow at 11:05am tomorrow.
Good to know they are keeping the same old, same old wheeler dealers in there. Heaven forbid some fresh, new, aware, maybe even FEMALE (horrors!) person with another perspective other than the beltway bullshit should be anywhere near the WH. (obvious)/*s
According to Firefox’s spell checker, it’s “personnel”.
If it’s the White House’s spelling that’s at fault, you may want to add a “[sic]” there.
Don’t let the door hit you in the ass Rahm!
You screwed the people enough in just your 1 3/4 years in office!
The beast is gone but the damage is done. I’m with nomolos though. This new guy looks to be pretty much the same as the old guy.
As for the subject at hand, two observations:
- Rahm is leaving to become the mayor of Chicago (slight sarcasm there, but only slight), and
- Anyone who thought things would be different once he left the WH should now be disabused of that notion.
Almost a half hour ago, John Harwood on CNBC said that Rahm was going to make the announcement in a few minutes. He must have misspoke, meaning to say that the WH was going to formally announce today that Rahm’s formal announcement will be tomorrow.
Anyway, I’m glad to see several high-level WH people leave. It’s not likely, you’ll all say, but I’m hopeful that it’s a sign that the crappy political situation going into the midterms has shaken Obama up a bit.
Well, we won’t have his corrupt “fucking retarded” ass to kick around anymore.
But, on the bright side: there’s so many more just like him in this administration…
Second verse
Same as the first.
Still way too many Goldman Sachs people in there. The PR changes they are making will do bugger all to change (I hate to use that word when it come to the WH though) the direction of the domestic financial disaster(s). No amount of PR primping is going to get people jobs or keep them in their homes.
Nah, it’s just that on Nov. 3 the countdown begins for Obama’s reelection bid. They can’t have any suggestion of disunity after that. Staff has probably been informed that if they don’t intend to hang around for the next two years they should leave now.
Bottom line, any staff who exit will be replaced by other neolibs.
I don’t care whether the door hits him in the ass or not, so long as he’s out.
Rahm, have a good time running for Tough Guy mayor of Chicago. It seems like Tough Guy is a bullshit role you enjoy playing for the benefit of no one but yourself and the people who’re willing to pretend to be your friends. As for the rest of us, I think it’s safe to say you won’t be missed.
I thought he’d appoint Daschle. Instead we get “Daschle’s Brain”.
Oh, but we will. We can hammer his little mayoral campaign with million ton shit hammers from now until the election in March.
As old English man o’ war captains said to their bos’ns before a whipping:
Lay on with a will.
Ding.
He’ll still have his finger in the pot. :)
Adviser to Tom Daschle, K Street whore, is not a badge of honor.
What else is known about Rouse?
Be careful or you will run afoul of the IDF and AIPAC.
Yep. Just like Electrical Language:
I speak to you through electrical language…
sometimes you hear me when our frequencies meet…
you try to listen but you don’t understand it…
Turn up the rhythm and you’ll pick up the beat…
(Repeat for verse after verse after verse….)
Everyone must be feeling warm and fuzzy knowing that Rahm’s replacement (how can anyone really replace Tiny Dancer?) will be a top aid of the former corporatist Senator, Tom Dascle.
Bring the motherfuckers on.
Even if Rahm falls short in Chicago there’s a lobbyist gig waiting in the wings.
Good one. The “brain” who got the Senate Majority Leader defeated by the asshat Thune.
Maybe he’ll work the same “magic” on BHO in 2012.
Makes me want to break out in song with “Ding, Dong the Witch is Dead..”, until I realize President 70% is still POTUS. If Rouse is so close to Daschle and doesn’t want to be COS permanently, makes me wonder if this moves Tommy Boy into the front runners spot.
Is this Rouse guy another pro Wall Street, pro NAFTA beltway insider?
This seems to be the only types of people that Obama appoints to anything…
how is rouse going to be as chief, improvement or not?
I think he’d go to Goldman Sux as one of their lobbyists. Given his record with congresscritters he might not find such a warm welcome on the Hill.
Hell, there are several candidates already in the race who will be putting him through the meat grinder.
I saw a post at the WIndy this morning where an attorney in Chicago says Rahm isn’t eligible to run:
Bet they can get that legislation changed quickly…
One can only “hope”
What else is known about Rouse?
he was Obama’s closest advisor in the Illinois Senate – where State Senator Obama voted ‘present’ 130 times
any questions ?
As one of the earliest people to see the early Rahm (1993) in action link here, it will be nice not hearing so much about him in the Washington news.
We need a uniter in there and not someone who has been so much of a lightning rod.
He will make a good mayor of Chicago.
The more the merrier. I’d like to be able to make the son-of-a-bitch as miserable as possible.
Careful what you wish for, you live in Florida so it would only be a short drive. “g”
Ya like punchin’ the munchkin? :)
p.s. can’t decide whether we are celebrating Rahmagan or Rhamadone
He has a home that is currently being rented out and the tenants signed a lease renewal a couple months ago and won’t move out. That home ownership will prolly qualify him although he’ll have to find another place to actually live in. Many pols do the same thing.
I’ve never liked Emanuel, even in the days when he was in the House.
Whichever doesn’t require fasting.
hey ol firedog
my .02 Rouse or anyone else for that matter wont make much of a difference at all unless there is a fundamental shift in their m.o. going forward – IOW, actually going forward and not doing everything as seen though the prism of electoral politics – and I don’t see that happening – it is who they are
I liked having him out of Illinois but Washington was still too close. Saint Helena seems a more appropriate hangout for a diminutive tyrant.
And we blasted the Shrub administration for being on the campaign trail 24/7.
I like Pitcairn Island.
Pow. To the moon, Rahm. (Or, is that still too close?)
Thanks for saving me the trouble.
Bottom line is this is the brain behind two of the more useless legislators in Democratic Party history, at least when measured against what they could have accomplished with the power they had.
Antarctica.
He could languish in Pitcairn’s Bounty.
On the other hand, perhaps it would be better to send him to a destination which already houses toxic waste.
This guy might be low key, but the name Tom Daschle isn’t. He is a moderate to conservative Dem. So much for “true” progressives stepping up in this administrtion.
If it were uninhabited, so would I.
great to see you too cb
With two ‘n’s.
Rahmagone
x2
Oh, oh, I know. He could go be mayor of Easter Island. That might make him uncomfortable.
apparently I should have qualified that with DLC’s prism of electoral politics – wherein making the deal trumps ‘results’
This is great news for all the people who blame Rahm for Obama’s sins. Or maybe not. Who will they blame now?
Well, 50 people from 4 families is pretty close.
Looks like Rahm is having trouble coming up with an alternative to wanting to spend more time with the family. Running for Mayor of Chi-town does not appear all that attractive to him.
So, you think this is bad news?
Make him mayor of an island encircled by giant hand statues with raised middle fingers. Facing inland, of course.
Make him mayor of a city of f’n retards.
Sort of a lateral career move, IOW?
I’ve never been to Pitcairn Island but I’ll bet the population is fairly inbred by now.
How much worse can this guy be then Rham? Whatever, it was always Obama at the center not Rham.
Hey, watch it. My daughter lives in DC. :)
We’ll have to herd all of the teabaggers into one area…. Maybe Alaska.
Ice Tea Baggers.
Wasn’t referring to humans who live the capitol, just pols. :)
Citizen SouthernDragon:
Waddiya know about the current political situation in Chicago, Brother Dragonman? I got a sister who has been livin’ in Hyde Park since she graduated from the UofC in ’72 and I ain’t particularly hopeful that a coalition of the folks can be brought together in time to put a dent in the machine there. After all the Daleys have been playin the Blacks against the hispanics against the jewish folks from inside their safe havens of the archdiocese for about a hundred years now…do you know sumpthin’ we don’t?
Gliese 581g
LMAO! Love it!
Gliese 581d. Why mess up the habitable one?
Thanks for the clarification. Still, I wish she’d move home. :(
St. Helena would play to his ego.
They already had Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, so hold back on the superlatives.
I can imagine, 2000 miles is tad far to get together often.
(((demi)))
Time for me to seize the day. See ya, demi.
Oh boy, Tom Daschle’s conjoined twin. What was that they used to say? In the Beltway there are whores, and then there are whores, and then there is Tom Daschle.
At least Daschle had a spine as Majority Leader
Anybody who is in Obie’s inner circle for that long has to be a piece of crap too.
“President Obama’s Chif of Staff”
Shiv of Staff. There, fixed it for you :)
Dear god, a Daschle retainer. But then, Daschle planted Bygones Obama in Kerry’s 2004 convention. By their sponsors know them:
“Tom Daschle Would Suck Off a Corpse For a Cheeseburger.”

Has anybody heard who Obama’s handlers are going to appoint to replace Rahm? I imagine if it isn’t another right-wing Zionist then A.I.P.A.C. will go bananas. Hey Obama, how about appointing someone who doesn’t spend his summers in Tel Aviv?
I heard that a permanent replacement won’t be chosen/announced until after Nov 2.
