my high today was in the 70′s… what’s that old saying.. location, location, location? of course, when the winter storms blow in, i’ll be eating those words :)
Gonna have a tough time making the rent on Friday. Anything you kind people could do to help would be greatly appreciated. More details are here or here.
The race for governor of Colorado this year has given progressive activist group ProgressNow a mother lode of material. The group notably mocked plagiarist GOP primary loser Scott McInnis. The group handed out McDonalds-style happy meal bags from “Scott McLobbyist” at the capitol to draw attention to his support for corporate tax breaks. The group also set up a “McLobbyist Makeover” website with an “I Feel Pretty” soundtrack where supporters could sign up to refashion an image of the candidate that mocked the fact that he paid consultants to remake his image by in part shaving his mustache and highlighting his hair.
GOP primary winner Dan Maes has arguably provided even richer material for the group to send up. A new campaign targets Maes’s argument that a Denver bike-sharing program set up by Democratic candidate for governor John Hickenlooper is part of a United Nations conspiracy to limit American liberty and sovereignty in the service of globalist government and perhaps world socialism. ProgressNow is selling “UN Bicycle Ambassador” T-shirts for $25.
The sunset here tonight was so brilliant, so exceptional with pinks and clouds and blues. I’m still amazed. Weather here in Cleveland is mild, but looking very autumn. Scandanavia was cold and very green. No fall colors there!
yay!!! i’m glad ya liked it and returned for more :) i do try to mix it up and not feature just the stuff i like to listen to. i don’t wanna be ‘predictable’.
I don’t understand half the cocked-up craziness the Baggers come up with, but I did see that UN Bicyclists thing. Why aren’t they laughed right off the continent? I mean, god, they embarrass this nation.
i surf the utubes looking for stuff i think ya’ll will like…. and my mother sends me stuff… she shared the ross sisters link with me a while back and i’ve been holding onto it for just the right thread…
Prayers for Jimmy Carter. I never bought into the media whipped tag of a failed presidency. I always remembered how he got Eygpt to withdraw from the league of middle east nations seeking Israel’s obliteration. That was a time the Cold War still threatened to move the Doomsday Clock to midnight. Carter’s Camp David Accords probably bought the planet the time for the fall of Russia and Glasnot; so billions never perished in a nuclear winter.
I read your seminal. And I agree. When Jews act like SS monsters against peaceloving Jews, they defile the memory of the millions who perished in the Holocaust.
thanks :) i pinch myself on a regular basis that i’m allowed to play backstage. i’m doing well — jen’s not ralphed in 6 days — things are doing well (knock on wood)
Pop Tart in the morning,
Honey Bun in the evening,
Brownie at suppertime;
But when I’m logged in to Late Late Night FDL,
It’s green tea and lemon cake all the time!
The Israeli government doesn’t want peace. It just wants to steal more land, and they want American young men and women to fight their neighbors so they can keep doing it.
Point being…should anyone need this spelled out, that this looks like an effort to use violent flash mobs as an excuse to target flash mobs generally, not to mention young people. Curfews???
For every creative action, there is an equal and opposite repressive reaction.
Just as soon as the opportunity presents. Just as soon as the place in which to jam the wedge presents.
Hi again, kitty. It’s a popular link, and one never knows, on the net, how many people have seen such. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to share it with you.
I could just watch it over and over again. I love the part where they all come running down the stairs, it’s like being blown down by this wonderful emotional wave. Hits me that way every time I’ve watched it.
Cool. (vs. 90′s yesterday) After struggling with my This America Life pitch for 30 hours I have a draft. It’s still too long. It’s that hard place between wanting to tell the story and pitch the story. The draft I have really tells the show. 1785 words. On one hand that’s not bad for something I worked on for years. On the other hand It’s about 1500 words too long.
I also wonder if TAL is the right venue. As I was working on it I started thinking that it is still too “hot” and that they won’t want to touch it because it is “political”.
And one thing that you and Larue both said, We need jobs. I think one reason why I’m spending so much time working on this is because I have the unrealistic hope that if it gets produced and I “out” myself people will hire me and I just don’t think that will be the case. People in the left wing world of think tanks already know who I am and they haven’t, so might just be making myself a public target on the right for no reason.
They don’t have much to work with. A tiny parcel of land, and the Jordan River, in the desert, with lots of potential for climate change messing up what little water they do have to work with. Wow.
It was a setup from the start.
So silly to obsess on such marginal land for historical reasons. So many dead because of such obsessions.
Of course the locals don’t have a lot of choice. They don’t have American dollars feeding in to keep them happy.
I also liked the one where they had all those people leave their cell phones in their backpacks, inside the video store was it? And they all called their own cell phones in organized patterns?
But really, the food court ones were the best I’ve seen. I’ve been neglecting these people; I’m glad this open thread got me around to thinking about them.
One of my featured on my blog was finding “joyful” video. That was one of them.
Two others were the opening from the movie “Adventures in Babysitting” with Elisabeth Shue lip syncing to the song, “And then he kissed me” and the scene “That Thing You Do” where the band’s one hit makes it on the radio for the first time.
There is something about singing and dancing I love. I really should go and see more musicals. One of the reason I love Glee, but there have been so disappointed in it. It’s hard to maintain quality over time. But the classics (like sound of music) keep going.
Max Headroom came out about the same time that William Gibson wrote Idoru — the sci-fi classic about the existance of virtual characters who might logically replace human celebrities.
Recently I read a story about that very thing existing in Japan in a hotel resort where men can go to have affairsw with virtual girls.

Funny. I spent years being the funniest guy in the room. Since 2004 I’ve been the most serious guy. Thanks Conservatives and George Bush, your plan to make the world more miserable for everyone but your cronies worked!
You’re quite correct. But I don’t fly unless I must.
My take? The WTC hit was the final threat the US took seriously. The blackmail deal: allow the family safe haven out of the US; remove the US porkeating military from Saudi Arabia; execute the heathen secular bastard of Iraq and his spawn; or expect more.
Bette Midler paved the way for Madonna and Madonna for Lady Gaga. And to CTuttle: Yes, MTV used to be all music videos before its creators sold it out to corporate jerks.

Bette went from foul-mouth rocker to Disney movies. I thought, in her old age, Madonna would wind up doing Disney movies, too. I suppose that never happened because Madonna can’t act.
Desperately Seeking etc. but we know what you mean. I think Madonna’s a superb actor in her primary art. She’s probably not introspective enough for ‘serious’ film work.
*yawn* i’m starting to nod folks. thanks for letting me hang out with ya tonight. don’t let my leaving stop ya from hitting that 200 — we are pretty forking close yanno and i would love to wake up tomorrow and see ya’ll did it
If your a SyFy TV, fan, the guy that played Max Headroom has acted in a lot of SyFy movies. He currently plays a role in Eureka and was the bad gut in Steven Spielburg’s “Taken”
Well, it was developed in Canada so you have to figure in the exchange rate: 1984 in US years.
Remember the pre-Internet Trivial Pursuit knock-offs you could play in clubs and pubs, compete with people right there and all over the connected world?
I was visiting in Toronto in the late 80′s, I filled in for my friend’s olady who was back home in Norway for a visit. My friend knew who all the hot dogs in the bar were. We were good (second-best). One guy was like too awesome. When the True-False round came on, he showed his contempt by getting every answer wrong. Can you imagine how hard that is to do in T/F?
Back for a few minutes. Bad stuff on Joe the teabagger coming out almost too quick to keep up.
BTW, any pups in Seattle, my Brass Quintet No. 2 will be performed by an excellent group Thursday evening (tomorrow) at the Oddfellows Hall in Ballard. 8:00 p.m. – along with other new music for brass quintet. Wish I could be there. It has been played several times Outside Alaska, but I’ve not heard a live performance of it yet..
I’d add another fifteen comments with individual quotations, but that would be cheating.
“Torturers are made slowly, not minted in the womb. As are those who resist them.” – Mark Slouka
“I wish my mind was a dog and I could train it to go sit.” – Dan McCall
“Even happy people were victims of a kind.” – Lionel Shriver
“I am impressed by the passion with which you accuse me of emotionalism.” – Howard Zahniser

“The present has the persistence of weeds; it returns every day with the same smell and the same shape, and yet you keep expecting something new.” – Gerard Donovan
“If you admire people who don’t need anybody, then they’re not going to need you, are they?” – Lionel Shriver
“The least resistible philosophies are the most arbitrary ones; those that make sense only in terms of themselves.” – Jerry Mander
“We get what the fucking we deserve.” – anonymous blogger
“Only use enough string to go around the package. Sometimes it takes quite a lot.” – Howard Gossage
“There is no reflection without the mirror.” – Miep
“What’s friendship, when all’s done, but the giving and taking of wounds?” – Frederick Buechner
“One cannot fight against war; one can only see it for the vulgarity it is, and walk away from it.” – Thom Hartmann
“Do not, this day, because I have grown saturnine,
Imagine that lost love, inseparable from my thought,
Because I have no other youths,
can make me pine.” – Yeats.
“I respect a man who knows how to spell a word in more than one way.” – Twain
Hmm. It’s a unique phrase. I’d never thought about that. It reads kind of like a demand, in a weirdly reflexive manner.
I never bothered with grammar diagrams; I learned to read by visual memory of groups of words, and went on from there. So I don’t know, off the top of my head, what “first-person implied (understood)” means. But I can see, now that you’ve pointed it out, that “Thank You” is a fairly strange construct.
In Spanish, they say “Many Thanks.” The giver of the thanks is thus firmly identified. There is none of this veiled business of demand involved.
Look. That means ‘hey, you: look’. Stop! means (you) stop. ‘I’ (or ‘we) is first person (the speaker of the statement. ‘You’ is second person, the person (persons) spoken to or addressed directly. ‘He’, ‘she’, ‘it’, ‘they’ (or a noun) would be third person, the person(s) or thing(s) spoken about. In commands (stop, go, wait, call me) the ‘you’ is implied or understood. So, ‘thank you’ is (actually) ‘I thank you’, with the ‘I’ omitted and implied or understood.

Bread and circuses. Except this time, you have to provide your own circus, and they don’t give you bread.
Dear god, those Potato Girls sure are limber, in a creepy way. Where the hell do you find these things?
I had no idea that people were allowed to do that in 1944. I thought everybody back then was very pure.
It’s censorship, I tell you.

The US is going to experience decades of revenge for their wholesale murder around the world. I don’t particularly want to suck that up.

Yeah, I remember it well. Quite the sensation for a short time.
i remember it but didn’t watch it — used to watch something else at that time iirc
Cool.
Yeah, it matters. Just focusing on the negative messes you up.
- Bing Crosby
Of course, one cannot just ignore the negative. That’s an important fine point to address.
Once upon a time, Tony Rice had the best voice in bluegrass. For decades.
But he lost it.
This is a song I love, from a project long, long, ago.
Norman Blake wrote it, it was done on a record with Grant N Ginger Boatwright. Norman Blake, and dobro wizard Tut Taylor.
Tony Rice sang it and picked it as others did for a long time after.
Here’s a version with Tony on git, and Josh Williams on vocals (Josh is a monster in bluegrass past 10 years. Plays and sings like Tony Rice)
Fine Pickin N Sangin
You can’t pick that shit, hand and mouth . . . in so many other genres.

That ain’t Jeff Beck . . .

And like I mentioned the other night, I can’t get over how much Lawrence O’Donnell looks like Max Headroom.
I thought I saw O’Donnell do a Max Headroom stutter tonight when he was oozing his eternal love to and for Axlerod.

heart attack and vine
One from Prine.
The best one is with Bonnie and John both, but YT has that not.
They both do a great job, especially together. The people in the linke in the previous comment are all right too.
Really? That’s great.
Now I’m thinking; it was John Prine who wrote that. I get him and Tom Waits confused sometimes. Ooopps.
could only find a bonnie
Desperately Seeking etc. but we know what you mean. I think Madonna’s a superb actor in her primary art. She’s probably not introspective enough for ‘serious’ film work.
prine wrote angel… they are both prodigious singer/songwriters
okay, “Angel From Montgomery” was by Prine, and “Shiver Me Timbers” by Waits.
I knew that.
That’s a good one; I’ve linked that more than once.

Mahalo…! Once again, I relied upon my Better Half’s pop culture knowledge… Generally, very astute, compared to my feeble efforts…!
I have little patience with such trivial pursuits…! ;-)
If your a SyFy TV, fan, the guy that played Max Headroom has acted in a lot of SyFy movies. He currently plays a role in Eureka and was the bad gut in Steven Spielburg’s “Taken”
Who is he? Wiki knows: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Frewer
Aloha, Suz…! Pleasant dreams…! *g*
Alas, no. I do the net and I read. That’s about it.
I see movies as social occasions. I ran out of local social.
These things happen.
Thanks for the info, though.
You’re Welcome.
From my mom’s page.
But either or both of you may be right!!!! I haven’t been able to advance my token in Trivial Pursuit since 1984.
Isn’t that about when they first released Trivial Pursuit’…? ;-)
Strawberry Fields
Hey Margot! Ever see that weird vid?
Back for a few minutes. Bad stuff on Joe the teabagger coming out almost too quick to keep up.
BTW, any pups in Seattle, my Brass Quintet No. 2 will be performed by an excellent group Thursday evening (tomorrow) at the Oddfellows Hall in Ballard. 8:00 p.m. – along with other new music for brass quintet. Wish I could be there. It has been played several times Outside Alaska, but I’ve not heard a live performance of it yet..
*heh* I was just gradding from HS then, and, headed straight into Uncle Sam’s Army…! ;-)
Oops – the link to the most recent dirt on Joke Miller.
185 comments; hmmm.
I’d add another fifteen comments with individual quotations, but that would be cheating.

Okay, y’all are on your own now.
I see that editing a comment destroys all the formatting. I won’t make that mistake again.
It’s LLN where cheating is not cheating.
“My chief purpose in life has been to provide others with Schadenfreude.”
“Well, you’re certainly a better judge of character than I am.”
oh, now it’s not destroyed.
Okay, I’m still on a learning curve here with y’all.
I have my standards. Foolish and impossible though they may be, no one will take them away from me!
C’mon guys – if not for the kids, do it for the Suzanne.
Isn’t Karma such a biatch…? ;-)
Aloha, Miep…!
200…! ;-)
THere are no standards at or on above or under LLN!
Her hero!!!!!
Yay!
You win!
You win the Internets. Would you like them named after you?
I hear they can do that here.
I find your syntax insufficiently confusing.
Work on that, will ya?
Somebody’s gotta take the fall…! ;-)
There are few things I appreciate more, than inadvertent weirdly wonderful syntax.
You know, if it wasn’t for me, I wouldn’t even have replied.
No one takes the fall on LLN (not even on Sundays & Mondays).
Dood!
Well, you need to say thanks, then, for getting yourself out there.
Speaking of syntaxonomy, do you realize that ‘thank you’ is the only example of first-person implied (understood) in English?
Well, I do seem to fall flat on my face on Sunday and Monday nites…! I shall bid ya’ll a fond adieu this fine evening…! Aloha Oe…! *g*
Aloha, CT, stay well.
Hmm.
I’ll accept the boobie prize as the last commenter. It’s laaaaaaaaaaate…. Bye, y’alls, sleep sweet!
Nah. It’s imperative tense, or implied at least.
Saying “Thank You” is so different from saying “I thank you.” The latter is much more personal. The formal sounds a bit too much like “fuck you.”
People try to make jokes about “thank you and fuck you.” Nobody ever tries to make jokes about “I thank you and I fuck you.”
Just doesn’t happen. Not as an attempt as a joke, anyway.
217!!!
woohoo!!! 217 — thanks peeps – love starting the day with a smile
