While it appears that Rahm Emanuel is leaving the White House soon so he can spend more time cursing at his family, things haven’t looked too good for Russ Feingold, who’d like to stay employed. The Wisconsin Senator who is generally a reliable progressive, if occasionally a tad sanctimonious, is having a tough reelection campaign. In a year that has been good for Republicans (for once it really is good news for them) Feingold had recently fallen double-digits behind his Republican opponent, Ron Johnson, in some polls (that aren’t Rasmussen).
But as they say the Lord works in mysterious ways…especially when you are running against an idiot.
Here’s Mr. Johnson on videotape (via Jud Loundsbury at the Great Orange Satan) protecting the right of Catholic Diocese to reassign pedophile priests and make it harder for victims to sue. A real popular position all around.
Your move Russ.

About Firedoglake
Morning, Attaturk!
What comes around, goes around, Rahm!
Nice Hippy Punch-back, Jane!
Now, we’ve got to get down to the business of winning these mid-terms!
That dkos diary on Feingold’s idiot opponent is still recommendable, too.
And speaking of idiots:
City With Shoulders?!
proverbial City With Shoulders?!!
Doesn’t that sound enough like Boris and Natasha for someone to have checked it out? Beneath contempt.
(For those who prefer to know what they’re talking about, here’s the actual reference and quote.)
Liberal Politicians
can blame themselves for not taking Obama and the DLC to task early on.
Liberal “progressive” journalists are even more to blame for the demise
of the Democrats for the same reasons. But instead, for the last year
and a half they have made every exuse imaginable for Obama and the majority
party. Had these same journalists taken the Democrats to task as they
should have, the TeaParty would only exist in the minds of Beck and Palin.
I hereby invite anyone who voted for Obama to stop blogging for a while. Just a friendly suggestion.
It should concenr you that all the people who sold Obama to us (HuffPo, DailyKos, BuzzGFlash, etc.) are still blogging away merrily, sharing teir political insights, explaining what went wrong–and of course, blaming it all on Bill Clinton–when what they should be doing is telling us why we should listen to a single word they say.
Not only did progressive bloggers promote Obama, they ignored clear warnings from their fellow progressives (like me) who tried to tell them Obama was a fraud. Their response to criticism was to attack their fellow progressives. That’s when I knew the Democrats were screwed.
The Fat Cat
Before he sets himself up as the tinpot dictator of the Great City of Chicago, Rahm’s got to win an open primary here first. Not gonna happen. He’s effing dangerous, and everybody knows it.
*aargh* The latest on the Jewish boat to break the illegal Gaza blockade…
As much as I hate the airport at O’Hare, I still wouldn’t wish that little prick on Chicago but such is the price of politics. I suspect Da’ Mayor is bailing out for personal reasons, he doesn’t want to drop the soap in front of his former friends.
Fiengold has been a pretty stand up guy, one of a very few.
Good luck to ya Russ, ya only fucked us a couple of times. Actually, a pretty good track record.
I would, as a last request, like to
chokerendition that little fucker Lieberman with a half hard dick and a bottle of sparkling water.Water board this you little sonofabitch.
And the view from Haaretz
One wonders how may people will be killed on this latet “peace” move by Israel
An 82 yro Holocaust survivor is abroad so they’d better be on their best behavior…! ;-)
Rallying to Russ is the right thing to do, imvho.
In the darkest days of the Bush/Neocon Nightmare, he was one of the few steady lights of principle and reason!
And, just look at his pedophile-enabling opponent! If that guy wins – nobody is safe in Wisconsin…
Rahm leaving means Respect for US – and Elections are Red Meat for everyone on this blog – We’ve got 35 days left to turn this thing around – imvho, it’s time to let the dogs out!
The best way to ‘fix’ anything that’s gone off the rails in the first two years is to have 60+ Senators and a Comfortable Majority in the House!
Standing between US and that goal is the lunatic Tea Party…
From facebook…
So only people under the age of 80 will be murdered?
Jedi Perrylogan: “You don’t want to sell me Obama. You want to go home and rethink your lives.
And an incompetent Senate Leader, and a eunuch president, and a corrupt WH….
Good morning, pups. It’s Brooks, Cohen and Herbert today. Bobo, who was born in Toronto, grew up in New York, went to college in Chicago, and lives in Bethesda, has decided he’s an expert on California. In “Tom Joad Gave Up” he has a question: Remember what good government looks like? He gurgles that revisiting California’s golden age might help. Typical Bobo crap. Mr. Cohen, in “The New American Normal,” says as the U.S. descends into tribal division, expect the “animal spirits” to keep on hoarding. Mr. Herbert asks “What Is Paladino About?” He says the Republican candidate for governor in New York has a lot more explaining to do before Election Day.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and I’ve got toasted Thomas’ English muffins with your favorite jam. I’m in the mood for blackberry this morning… We had a rainy day yesterday, and it looks like we’re in for more rain tonight and tomorrow. I picked up some more work yesterday, so I’m off to get started on it. Have a great day.
Thank you for the update. I don’t do facebook so if you have any more up dates they would be welcome.
So what if Feingold’s opponent is an idiot? Much if not all of the U.S. electorate often prefers the idiot. It validates their own idiocy.
Does he mean the “Golden Age” prior to passage of Prop 13?
nomolos – I read your comments all the time, and I respect your opinion very much!
In my experience, sometimes We have to carry Our leaders across the goal line, and then sort-out the playbook later.
Obama and Biden have called US to come in and substitute for Rahm – they are choosing US – how can We not rally to them?
He says:
I’m partial to the Liliko’i jam, myself…! Aloha, Marion… It’s been far too long since we crossed threads…! ;-)
But we did that in 2008 only to be shat on by those same “leaders”. No This WH is too corrupt for me. They made sweetheart, back room, deals with InsurPharma which effectively killed Health care reform. They have continued, even enhanced, the Bush policies with regards rendition, detainment of American citizens and “secret” wire taps.
Oh Bummah! has yet to deliver on one of his “promises” made during the election. No revisiting FISA or NAFTA, no Card Check for Union organizing, we still have DADT and not one bloody investigation into any of the criminal acts by the previous administration. No this president and this Congress have lied through their teeth, have jumped into bed with big corporations and have tried to belittle those of us that have principles.
I understand what you are saying, that we must stick what is “better” than the GOP but I respectfully disagree. I will be writing in rather than voting for any “offered” candidate.
So Rahm is leaving, and Obama’s going to start listening to us.
Don’t fall for it, it’s a trick!
Hi! I’m thinking I totter off for work before you’re up. Great to “see” you.
Biden to Dems: Stop Whining
Bank of England to “savers”: Start Spending.
The losses in November will be blamed on the DFHs,
and the double-dip will be blamed on the consumers.
Clap louder AND use that platinum card!
Well, at least I have a Progressive Caucus critter to re-elect…! Even a Progressive Guv to elect…! Tho, I do have to still answer for Ted Steven’s bosom bud, Dan Inouye…! However, It’s rather nice to have one’s senator chairing the Senate Ways and Means Committee…! ;-)
Agreed. This guy is saying nothing I haven’t heard from serious nutters who have studied up on stuff that was pointed out to them on the radio by consulting the nutter blogs.
Case in point: the Governor of Arizona froze up completely in the debate she was invited to, and then refused to answer questions about severed heads she said littered southern AZ. Result? She bounced HIGHER in the polls.
This is politics – it’s never perfect, always messy and a constant struggle.
Here’s the situation, as I see it:
Obama is attempting to steer the ship of state towards a better tomorrow – the tomorrow he envisioned during his campaign, and that We voted for.
It’s a ten-person scull – with five on the right and five on the left.
Now, the right side has been dumping their oars, and some of them have even been rowing backwards.
The net result? The boat is going in a circle and not perceptibly advancing.
Is it really ‘correct’ for US to blame Obama?
I challenge anyone to name anybody who would succeed in Obama’s position, given the sabotage by the right.
Feingold has earned a break. when sanity is the final deciding factor, we’re in all sorts of trouble.
Bernie Sanders…? ;-)
Historically FDR, Truman for starters and current Alan Grayson, Peter DeFazio, Bernie Sanders. Historical moment squandered. Apparently the “bully pulpit” ain’t what it used to be.
How’s about Howard Dean…? ;-)
Now we are talking! Unfortunately I do not think that Dean will primary the WH prevaricator though I would work my butt off for the man.
I envy you a Progressive to vote for.
I don’t doubt the stature of FDR and Truman, but honestly they didn’t have anything like the rabid, irrational Neocon/Tea Party of No opposition that Obama has.
The last time We had this kind of a face-off – Principle vs. Ideology – was Lincoln – and he couldn’t pull it off, either.
Essentially, We’re up against the rise of the New South – if We give them the Government, then We’ll regress into being a Colony of Authoritarian Submission.
The stakes are high…
succeede to what end?
Is Chris Hedges a persona non grata among the pups?
It’s not just that. It’s been the Cheap Suite Brigade (also known as so-called Congressional progressives) who folded up on healthcare – this includes Feingold amongst others.
“Is it really ‘correct’ for US to blame Obama?”
Yes.
I think you, like millions actually believed what Obama said in his campaign and accepted his team of rivals approach to getting the “ship of state” turned around. That all was hooey and we’ve seen the R’s do exactly what they said they would do, block everything that the D’s or the libruls wanted to do. And they did it.
To get anything done Obi did the kabuki and put on the emperor’s new clothes and all the things he seemed to represent went out the window. He refused to even hold W’s folks accountable for their atrocities and even made many of them his own. He squandered every opportunity to act on his own and rolled over to the right or was he just showing us his “right side” which he nicely concealed with all his rhetoric.
People are pissed, disappointed and tired of politicians who feather their own caps, suck up continually to special interests and screw the people again and again and again. The Tea bags are just the right side of this anger and they are funded by big $ who are using them as a trojan horse to further dismantle government which takes their money and redistributes it to slackers.
Perhaps we need to go hard right to wake up the people to get out their pitchforks and begin a second revolution – this republic is in the tank and it’s not going to be saved.
911 is a topic non grata and anyone who goes there is damaged goods or persona non grati
With the strong catholic base in Green Bay and Fox Valley area in Feingold’s district, who I feel are fully in denial and really want to forget this recently publicized chapter, being reminded of the church’s shortcomings might have an opposite affect and be seen as an attack on their beliefs.
There was a lot of folding on every issue which would make america a better place for her people (as opposed to her elites). The people now get it and are being asked to vote the the wimps or the whacko right and that seems like an easy choice, but the wimps just roll over to the whackos and we get more of the same, rinse and repeat.
Let’s get a complete 100% do over. We are past the point of repairing THIS America. It’s a wasted effort.
@radiofreewill:
Can you give me any indications how Obama is ready to ‘turn the ship around’? Summers departure is expected and planned as is Rahm tho I’m sure leaving stuck under the bus was not in Rahm’s playbook. Geithner? Warren? HC? DADT? Anything of substance?
All the indications are clearly that Obama does NOT want to change course, as this is the course they set 2 years (or more) ago. Obama probably wants to go into history as the ‘ultimate centrist’, the ‘champion pragmatist’, the ‘ultimate Reagan Democrat’. And there’s more like him waiting tho luckily we puked out that little DLC fucker Harold Ford, another of those new state blue demonazis….
So, exactly what indications are there that poor Obama is a powerless president held hostage who would do soooo much good if only he had a heart and a brain?
You need to go back and read a little history. FDR had to deal with the American Bund. Ever hear of it? Google Smedly Butler to learn about a right wing coup attempt that was attempted by prominent Republican industrialists. Have you forgotten about the support Hitler got from the U.S. business community? Obama hasn’t proved himself deserving in standing in FDR or Truman’s shadows. That could change but after nearly two years he’s been found wanting.
OT, I was listening to NPR trying to discuss the for profit Health Insurance Entitlement Act and it truly is a piece of shit legislation but then the most viable option, single payer was taken off the table right from the very beginning with Obama’s blessing. Anyone that thinks this guy is a “visionary” is myopic at best and blind at worst.
He needs balls first.
Why any sane people still look to this totalitarian government as a source of hope is beyond me.
Anyone who thinks that Obama is anything more than a corporate brand (his campaign won 1st place in marketing, beating out apple and zappos). Anyone who thinks that whoever replaces a Prez in America will not be a corporate hack, is deeply deluded.
Jim Wright preached the same theology that Dr. Martin Luther preached, and Obama threw him under the bus. We are in deep, deep shit.
Feingold should use this video in his campaign to show that Johnson WANTS your children to be raped by Catholic priests.
not deep enough yet. We are like drunks.. we need to hit absolute bottom and completely 100% change everything. Until then it’s more of the same and the frog boils.
The nonexistent left will be caught with their pants down, when the t’baggers (who have some legitimate grievances) turn this place into a new Weimar.
It’s an irony actually that so many people will vote for people that call themselves REPUBLICANS but in reality are Royalists. I would guess that many of these folks would be much happier in a State run by a landed Aristocracy with a Divine Right King at the helm. Democracy to these folks is something they only want for a few ( the Lords). How do you explain a movement among these fools to rescind direct elections for Senators and return this function to State legislatures?
OK, I see the party is just getting started here!
I’m used to wrestling the issues in big groups, but in order to keep it a productive discussion, I’ve learned to insist on ‘the Party Rule’ – which says that If you want to complain, Then you have to also put-up a better solution at the same time.
So far, the only ‘better solution’ I’ve seen proposed in this thread has been to turn our backs on Obama and ‘leave him to stew in his own soup.’
Like it, or not, we’re in the same soup, too!
For US to say that ‘he defaulted on his own Principles’ and abandon him is to de-facto default on Our own Principles, also. It isn’t a bonifide option to bail on the fight to preserve Our Individual Freedoms in the face of the threat from Bullies using a Racist Ideology to beat US down.
Realistically, We have no option but to fight Irrationality and Hateful Ideology right now – or possibly have to live within it for the rest of Our lives.
It’s clear to me, that with the exit of Rahm, Obama needs US and We need him. If We can’t see past Our differences for the time being, We’ll All go down in detail.
He’s moving towards US – the least We can do is move towards him.
I sure hope he has staffers reading this blog, man I love russ, would love him to primary obama
obama is a corporatist, a trojan horse, you don’t keep a trojan horse around just because it happens to claim it’s on your side
we’re better off oposing a corporatist on the other side of the aile then fighting one claiming he’s a democrat
I want obama out of office so we can oppose the corporate agenda he represents
It appears that some Nut-Jobs have lost their way. Let me clear something up. Anyone who voted for Obama last go round would certainly vote for him again. As usual we’re picking the lesser of two evils. Of course at the time some of us were feeling a bit giddy and had thought otherwise, but time has proven it was the same old selection process, again.
All you have to do is try to visualize the alternative. We could be 2 years into the McDelirium and the Crazy Lady’s administration. Between congress doing close to nothing and McNut maybe pressing the veto button at random, we could be pretty much be without a national government. Hey, enjoy the anarchy I guess.
Yes, Obama sucks, but I’d vote for him again given the alternative. Wait till 2012, you’ll be looking at the same shitty choices on your ballot.
Atta, Hey there! Yeah, it’s been a long time for me to catch up with ya. You are still doing the greatest informative comedy on the net! Colbert and Stewart learned it all from you I’m sure.
Love Ya! Keep it up.
Now that’s the way to buck up and get in gear!
perris – There’s room in Our Big Tent for Corporations!
There’s also room for Regulatory Over-sight, Consumer Protection and Ethics Committees, too.
However, We’ll never know that, again, unless We rally now. Imvho, the issues are the trees, but the forest is burning with Ideology.
It’s the Goopers that dug themselves in with the Corporations – and, imvho, Rahm who tainted Obama with the backroom deals – but, I’m saying We can rally past all that by staying true to Our Principles – come Hell or high water!
sorry, can not agree
there is plenty of room for corporations in our economy
there is no room for corporatists in our government
none
obama sold everyone out, the people, the government, our future and this country
there is no room for obama in the democratic party and he could have won easily as a republican with the agenda he promoted once he became president
we need him out, if we are going to have a corporatist in the office he needs an oposition to those policies, the democrats will be that oposition if the president is not a democrat
simple stuff
obama is a trojan horse
Sent the links to three of his staffers from whom I get frequent and regular requests for money.
Not long ago I had a conversation with a Tea Party Activist, who also happened to be a Catholic.
He said that the Catholic Church doesn’t have a child-sex-abuse problem, because ‘homosexuals are found all over society, but since the Church is such a big target for liberals, they are being singled-out unfairly.’
When I mentioned there was no connection between Iraq and 911, he said – loudly – that invading Iraq was the best thing we ever did! Saddam just ‘got lucky’ and hid his WMDs in Syria before we could stop him.
Obama is Nothing like that! To say that he is – is no different than conflating 911 and Iraq.
The consequences of aiding the Tea Party in bringing down Obama and the Dems are potentially horrific.
In my experience, sometimes We have to carry Our leaders across the goal line, and then sort-out the playbook later.
Err, you need to work on your talking points or perhaps do some research on the American sport of “football”.
Helping the runner is a 10 yard penalty (“Another player cannot assist the ball carrier by pushing or pulling them forward).
http://football.about.com/cs/football101/g/gl_helpingtheru.htm
the tea party isn’t bringing obama down, his own corporate agenda is what’s doing it
he’s a republican calling himself a democrat and he needs to be removed from this seat of power
he can run as a republican if he wants
you are like the sheep who wants the wolf remaining there because he is all dressed up like a sheep
same thing
here’s the plan radio;
primary obama with a real candidate
THAT’S the way to do what we need to do, keeping him in power is the path to continued corporate take over of this country
I am off to the next thread so you obviously have the last word, we do however disagree, you think obama is a better choice then a republican, I think he does more damage then a republican can and that is the differance between your point of view and mine
see you on another thread
Just to clarify, does your use of the letters “US” mean the opposite of them or the country south of Canada?
You must be a crackerjack focus group and/or key party facilitator.
Hmmmm, I’ll work on my metaphors!
I challenge anyone to name anybody who would succeed in Obama’s position, given the sabotage by the right.
Jesus ChristRonald ReaganSo, what’s your alternative proposal here?
It sounds like it’s more than ‘do nothing’ – possibly even egging-on his demise? How could this possibly be good for us at this critical time?
Both, and I’m a meditation teacher with no ties to any political groups – I just like living Free.
Reagan would likely have a better chance than Jesus – you won’t ever hear the Goopers extolling the virtues of Jesus’ teachings.
you didn’t read my posts at all did you, you just want to make believe the only solution is to put up with a trojan horse
the proposals abound, we need to fight his corporate proposals and agenda, we need to primary the trojan horse, we need to make clear we do not approve and he’s not comming back, we need to make certain he is not re-elected, and make certain he knows he is getting primaried so that maybe he tries to keep his seat in power and gets some progressive country saving agenda passed
this is simple stuff, the solution is to get rid of obama, he is a republican making believe he’s a democrat so people like yourself defend him
perris – I hear you, and I’ve read your comments!
Look, I understand how you feel! I would have loved a one-for-one conversion on the issues from the campaign to legislation once in Office!
But, the truth is that it’s Really Hard to Do, especially in the face of the Obstructionism Obama’s had to deal with.
We on the left, the Dems in general, have to be Masters of Coalition Politics – stamina, compromise and patience are essential elements of Our ‘floats all boats’ approach, imvho.
Along the way, we’ll have to plug holes and bail-out the fuck-ups that will inevitably occur.
We can’t let that get US down – We can’t expect to move forward with a ‘no tolerance’ for falling short attitude.
What would it take for you to get in the game and support the Dems for the mid-terms?
now your’e talking but I thought we were talking about obama
I support all of the democratic lawmakers who are not republicans making believe they are democrats, I support no blue dog, no “remove the estate tax, continue the bush gifts for the wealthy” democrats
but what it would take to support obama is this;
obama moves to remove the mandate with something like;
“until we can offer a competitive public health plan we cannot force americans to buy from private industry, we will remove that mandate until their is a public option”
then he needs to go on with;
“we need to stop feeding the private military suppliers that are feeding these wars which have devastated our effectiveness both overseas and here at home”
but the FIRST thing he needs to do is this;
“we CANNOT continue using the FASCIST terms “the homeland”, it is an INSULT to too many americans and a SMACK IN THE FACE
we are AMERICANS and we have AMERICAN security not “homeland security”
then he has to STOP protecting the cheney bush regime against war crimes
a few more things but that would do the trick to get me started
Thanks for the reply and good sportsmanship!
I don’t have any problem, myself, with primarying Republican-leaning Blue Dogs as a rule, in general.
The only way, imvho, that the Estate tax goes away, and the Bush Windfall Tax-Cuts for the Rich stay, is If the Goopers take over.
And, if the Goopers take the House, imvho, in addition to Giving $800 Billion to the Richest of the Rich – and eliminating taxes on their Estates – they’ll impeach Obama on trumped-up charges in 2011, and threaten him with a Trial in the Senate – if he doesn’t cut Social Security.
Then, we’ll see how things go for US under President Jeb Bush…
What you do not mention is that everyone in the scull calling him/herself a Democrat — except, of course, for Lieberman.
I actually meant for the five on the left to be the Dems and the five on the right to be the Goopers, which is why the ship of state is simply going in circles.
Lieberman is a wild-card substitute – he’s neither a Dem nor a Gooper, but he’ll opportunistically sit on either side – he’s with the Wall Street/Bankster/Money Party.
