Fending off demands that he resign over the Abu Ghraib prison scandal, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress he had found a legal way to compensate Iraqi detainees who suffered “grievous and brutal abuse and cruelty at the hands of a few members of the United States armed forces.”
“It’s the right thing to do,” Rumsfeld declared in 2004. “And it is my intention to see that we do.”
Six years later, the U.S. Army is unable to document a single payment for prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib.
I’d have said ‘stop me if you’ve heard that story before’ but you have.
Marty Peretz proclaims Muslim life is cheap…but torturing Muslims is apparently free.

The Roberts Court has a chance to extend the penumbra of immunity from lawsuit from the Army to both domestic and foreign corporate contractors acting on its behalf. And remember, any technical barriers to the use of military force in “homeland defense” can be overcome by using contractors.
You really don’t want to open this door.
Of course, our inability to document any payments doesn’t mean the payments were never made. When it comes to Bush-Cheney, we’ll never know where the money went.
The Fat Cat
Rumsfeld lied before Congress, Cheney lied before Congress, billions of $s are missing, illegal invasions were carried out, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been murdered, the NY trade towers were bombed, prisoners were (and are being) tortured, not one investigation by Congress…..where the hell do you think the missing billions have gone.
Fuck Marty Peretz and the Poison Ivy League of sociopaths.
Good morning, pups. It’s Monday so that means we get treated to the stylings of the Pasty Little Putz, but at least there’s also Prof. Krugman. The Pasty Little Putz has a question about “The Seduction of the Tea Partiers:” Will the rhetoric of the House Republicans’ Pledge to America win over Tea Party members? In “Structure of Excuses” Prof. Krugman says “structural” unemployment is a fake problem, which mainly serves as an excuse for not pursuing real solutions.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. It looks like we may be in for some rain over the next few days, which is a very good thing. I’m champing at the bit, waiting for the weather to get a little bit cooler before I plant my lettuces and it looks like it’s almost time. Have a great day.
I am so proud of our constitution.
To bad the thugs and murders and liars that think the constitution is a God Damn piece of paper are the only ones running for office.
On a lighter note our troops killed 50
communiststerrorists in the Pakistan war. Welcome to the insane asylum with nurse rachect obama smiling as he commands these terrorist murders, by his gang of thugs. Keep your head down.Just who the fuck is “everybody”.
Surely “everybody” knows that Social Security has bugger all to do with the budget. The Social Security coffer holds an enormous amount of money, money that makes most members of the corporate party pee their pants in their desire to get their hands on it. Social security can be “saved” by simply taking the cap off Social Security payments.
Medicare can be “saved” by having a public option which would drive down the overall cost of health care and reduce the price of drugs. Medicare, at the moment is for the elderly who are more inclined to need medical attention and by the (medicaid) less well off population who have terrible nutrition problems and concomitant medical problems. With a wider pool of people Medicare would cost less, be more efficient and would help drive down the ridiculous price of medical insurance.
Basically both SS and Medicare can be “saved” very easily by a vote from the extremely rich and carefully bribed members of Congress…..not going to happen.
Just more of those phantasms that The Pasty Little Putz calls upon to justify his untenable positions and shore up the crap that he scrawls with his dull crayons. In other words, “nobody.”
The FDL server is a little buggered this morning…where are those IT drones?
One has to wonder if these right wing bloviators will ever get tired of lying.
‘With a wider pool of people Medicare would cost less, be more efficient and would help drive down the ridiculous price of medical insurance.’
Exactly. which would be great for the country, so of course the right wingers will fight it ferociously.
thanks, Marion, here it’s turned cool suddenly, feels very autumnal. I should actually have brought my tropicals inside yesterday.
Here. also. Definitely a cool morning…
Guess we lived through the worst of it, this summer. Makes me feel almost alive again, even made a pot of beans yesterday.

Obama targeted them with his Predator drones.
I think it is their latest enthusiasm initiative.
