“Democrats believe we must permanently extend tax cuts for the middle-class before they expire at the end of the year, and we will,” said Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). “Unfortunately, to this point we have received no cooperation from Republicans to do so.”
Democrats in the House still may act on the issue before the election, but are wary of a vote that could be represented as a tax hike.
Unbelievable.

good morn
Hey there sy. What’s shaking?
Good morning all.
Spineless for sure. And panicked about the election. Like duh.
Rahm might want to reconsider his plans for running for elected office.
Because of his insults and attacks on progressives, some of them might be tempted to work against any campaign he should run as a Democrat.
Of course, he can always run as a Teatard. He would fit right in with that crowd.
listening to WJ.and hearing how hopelessly dumb the country is as whole
Do you think we need to get out our umbrellas so the roosting chicken feathers don’t get in our hair?
Is DC still playing Who could have anticipated this?
How many times can we work BT’s “unbelievable” into this thread? Gah.
I’d love to see Rahm run and lose badly.
it comes down to,no inner convictions or morality
I don’t know what kind of protection we need against the pols. Umbrellas, suits of armor, or do those scumbags need to wear condoms for OUR protection?
Woodward book: U.S. drones have already assassinated more than a few Americans in Pakistan: democracynow. I’ve got to read that book asap.

I found O’s speech on Palestine-Israel absolutely gag producing, what snippets I caught of it.
I felt the same way as Moore did when I heard about the new “comedy” about the outsourcing of American jobs. How could anybody think that was a good idea?
Americans vastly underestimate the degree of wealth inequality in America, and we believe that the distribution should be far more equitable than it actually is, according to a new study.
Or, as the study’s authors put it: “All demographic groups — even those not usually associated with wealth redistribution such as Republicans and the wealthy — desired a more equal distribution of wealth than the status quo.”
The report (pdf) “Building a Better America — One Wealth Quintile At A Time” by Dan Ariely of Duke University and Michael I. Norton of Harvard Business School (hat tip to Paul Kedrosky), shows that across ideological, economic and gender groups, Americans thought the richest 20 percent of our society controlled about 59 percent of the wealth, while the real number is closer to 84 percent
Brain condom or full body condom?
anything to make money
Analyst on O speech on democracynow calls it empty rhetoric. Guess everyone has caught onto that ploy.
What Feinstein said was news to me but not surprising. Honestly why people don’t view her as a blue dog is beyond me. She makes Ben Nelson look progressive.
It’s just a matter of time before the drones are pointed at peace activists on our own soil.
The Democrats are spineless meme continues…
To paraphrase Bill Parcells, our record ‘is who we are.’
Banker and Health Insurance Industry bailouts, attempting to dismantle Social Security, escalating and starting Wars in Asia and Africa, torture, overtly trying to assassinate U.S. citizens – I would say “Our Side’s” record speaks for itself.
Thanks. Listening to democracynow on another window, so will check out later.
Full body, just to make sure.
What country do we have to move to to get a job?
My high school is having a reunion and it costs $117 just for dinner. I’m not going. Nobody I want to see. But, they keep emailing me.
You got that right. First it will happen on U.S.-Mex border would be my guess.
80 percent of the public want laws discouraging companies from outsourcing American jobs. I just don’t believe anybody will watch it. What’s next? A comedy about the high jinx and merry mix-ups of a family made homeless because their jobs were outsourced and their home foreclosed on?
This isn’t rocket science, instead of letting the Bush Administration set tax policy from the (political) grave. Why didn’t Democrats let the Bush tax hike go into effect (yes all $250 billion a year of it) and then immediately turn around and offer a progressive Obama tax cut of equal size?
Let’s see the Make Work Pay (MWP tax credit, which the Democrats are foolishly let expire, cost $40 billion a year and provided every worker making under $75,000 (phasing out at $100k) a $400 refundable tax cut, $800 for every family earning under $150,000 (phasing out at $200k).
Let’s make it 6 times bigger to replace Bush’s plan… somehow I think an Obama plan cutting working family’s tax bill by $3200 (and refunding the difference) will play better than keeping taxes low for those making over $250k. Or to really juice it, merge it with the EITC and the various child and child care tax credits, exemptions and deductions to add a per child amount to the Obama MWP tax credit.
The beauty of a single refundable tax credit scheme is (assuming Obama drops his deficit hysteria, big assumption I know) it becomes the default location for every tax loophole eliminated or wasteful spending program cut. Say the defense budget is reduced $100 billion a year by dropping wasteful weapons programs, eh, who cares? But tell people, $100 billion is being cut so that every working family gets an extra $1000 added to their MWP credit… that people will pay attention to.
It’s not a meme. It’s reality when so many Democrats are afraid to touch a popular issue like extending middle class tax cuts while letting those for the richest expire.
Or maybe you don’t know what “meme” means.
On Edit: I see you were probably being snarky. My bad. Too early.
I don’t know demi, wish I did. On the positive side, at least my high school contemporaries finally gave up trying to get me to go to reunions.
Thanks to unrestricted surviellance capabilities of those who wish to abuse the system, everyone in Congress who is not a rightwing thug is being blackmailed. The blackmailers are theatening to expose anyone daring to step out of line.
This is the only possible explanation for the apparent spinelessness.
Here’s a linky link to the inequality study.
http://web.docuticker.com/go/docubase/60726
Ha. After you attended the last one?
BTW, how was that job fair yesterday?
Maybe but the Democratic spinelessness has been going on since at least 1976.
Mornin’, BT, pups
Michael Moore for President.
But, really, how deep can their closets be? Look at all the immoral behavior that has been exposed and then either forgiven or forgotten.
Nope. I’ve never attended one. I informed them, (on several occasions), that the people who I wanted to stay in touch with after high school I was still in touch with and I had no use for the rest of them, including and especially the reunion organizers.
thank you
Sorry. I guess I misremembered.
If you’re referring to the Carter Administration, it was heavily infiltrated by Republicans determined to make Carter fail in everything he did. Despite that, Carter did advance many progressive initiatives, most of which were dismantled when Raygun arrived.
Morning all .
Patrick Murphy, Mr. Blue Dog , Pa-8 trailing the real republican by double digits.
May-be Mr. O could drop by and give a great speech for him, from one Blue Dog for another.
Misremembered? I doubt it. I don’t think I’ve ever discussed my lack of reunion attendance here before. :)
It an issue of conscience. Those on the Rethug right have none, so they continue on as though nothing happened after being exposed. When those on the left are exposed, they resign in shame.
No, I’m not referring to Carter but the Democrats in Congress who refused to support his initiatives.
Obama’s ‘Moment of Clarity’ needs to come before the mid-terms.
He should address his base – US – and explain how his rhetoric turned into a goldmine for corporations and special interests during the last two years.
As part of that explanation, he needs to clean house.
The truth is that the left called Rahm on the backdoor deal with Big Pharma, not even six months into Obama’s Presidency, and Rahm’s response was to demonize US.
That flawed start doomed Healthcare Reform with the stench of ‘the fix is in’ – and we on the left ‘knew’ it. So, Rahm made sure that the President thought of us as ‘fucking retards’ – instead of the reliable truth-tellers that we’ve been for the last five straight years.
Obama needs to re-connect with US, and the best way to do that, it seems to me, is to get rid of the insiders who spun him a ‘happy story’ to cover their own egegious mistakes – and re-commit to the ideals and legislation that we sent him to the White House to get done – before the mid-terms.
Alternative energy was an especially great program that Carter started but it was tiny compared to what it needed to be because of the terrified “Democrats”. Plus, as you pointed out, it was dismantled by Reagan. Think of all of the money we could have saved if it had been robust and long lasting. Think of the fewer wars, the less pollution and several major environmental catastrophes we could have avoided if the congressional Democrats hadn’t sold their souls to people like the Koch’s.
Excellent response. Who should we believe? “Grifter Democrats” or “our lying eyes”?
I go all in on “our lying eyes” because mistakes in perception can be corrected while Grifter Democrats are incorrigible.
Be careful. demi’s memory is often better than the other party’s, or, speaking for myself, her memory about what I’ve typed is certainly better than mine. *g*
Thanks, I’ll agree to that. In retrospect, Carter was one of the finest persons to occupy the Oval Office. It may take generations, but one day he will receive his due.
I saw this disastrous cycle coming when Rahm Emanuel was made Chief of Staff and Tim Kaine took over the DNC. The only people who can get the deeply loathed Republicans elected are “Democrats”.
Not only is it waaay too late for that, you must be talking about some other Obama, not the one currently occupying the WH.
She could very well be right. Just because I don’t remember something certainly doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. I’ve got long term loss of short term memory after all.
I heard a report last week that there are over 20,000 British Irak/Afghanistan veterans in prison for violent crimes. This morning, there’s this.
Gives new meaning to the phrase, “We’ve created a monster.”
The Carter Doctrine is that the U.S. will enforce its hegemony over ME oil with the U.S. military.
It’s okay. I can understand your response because Carter bashing is such a reflexive thing for so many. I’m just surprised you would think I would behave reflexively.
That’s why the win theme that the other guys suck more is so-o-o effective. Not.
Yep. And a whole lot of those veterans are becoming police officers. Scares the hell out of me because too many departments let veterans skip certain training and psych evals.
70% of WB funds given to Pakistan for flood control were siphoned off: democracynow.
Dems lack spine is a good counter to the Left is costing us the election. Dems can’t make the case we should vote for cowards.
Its time for the Dems to do something if they want to win I suggest announcing we are leaving Afghanistan in 6 months.
Crappola! That last was meant for SouthernDragon@ 53!
Michael more as a “traditional” Democrat has values and principles. The leadership of the current Democratic Party, including Obama, have neither. It’s merely about securing campaign funding by stepping on as few toes as possible.
Thanks. My memory has sometimes been a problem for my husband(s). I once needed to have a serious discussion with my ex and I tape recorded it. Even after replaying what his responses, he said, I didn’t say that. One of the reasons he’s the Ex. :O
It would be interesting the hear what Carter has to say about that today.
Yep but I think we don’t really need a counter. Nobody believes that the Democrats will lose because of the dirty f*cking hippies. Even Rahm isn’t that clueless. Just because they are selling a narrative doesn’t mean anybody is buying it. Except perhaps Ed Schultz.
What I’m looking forward to on Wed. 3 Nov:
1. how many of those blue dog scum are gone? 2? 20?
2. how hard will be the punching of the all powerful DFHs be?
3. how fast will the votes happen for extending fascist lies on taxes & social security ?
imagine a society where those with the most authority and the most rewards ALSO had the most accountability and the most responsibility? ha ha ha.
rmm.
He just published a memoir. Don’t know whether he covered that in the book.
I once did that with a guy who refused to believe he snored. He then denied it was him and accused me of sneaking out to tape somebody else snoring, (so my voice would be on the tape too).
I think about it all the time. When the rich get to rich they own everything and stifle anything new from threatening the existing power/economic structure because its working so well for them, they don’t want to risk money on the future because they might have to cut their spending on their Paris Hilton lifestyles, and something new means someone else will join their club.
Good point we could use some polling on that just to get a laugh:)
U.S. Businessman: Blackwater Paid Me to Buy Steroids and Weapons on Black Market for Its Shooters
Howard Lowry: “It was like a frat party gone wild. Drug use was rampant. There was cocaine all on the tables. There were blocks of hash, and you could smell it in the air.”

A Texas businessman who has worked extensively in Iraq claims that Blackwater paid him to purchase steroids and other drugs for its operatives in Baghdad, as well as more than 100 AK47s and massive amounts of ammunition on Baghdad’s black market. Howard Lowry, who worked in Iraq from 2003-2009, also claims that he personally attended Blackwater parties where company personnel had large amounts of cocaine and blocks of hashish and would run around naked. At some of these parties, Lowry alleges, Blackwater operatives would randomly fire automatic weapons from their balconies into buildings full of Iraqi civilians. Lowry described the events as a “frat party gone wild” where “drug use was rampant.” Lowry says he was told by Blackwater personnel that some of the men using the steroids he purchased were on the security detail of L. Paul Bremer, the original head of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA). Lowry also claims that Blackwater’s owner Erik Prince tried to enlist his help to win contracts for Blackwater with the Iraqi government using an off-shore security company, Greystone, which Prince owns. The purpose, Lowry says, was to conceal Greystone’s relationship to Blackwater
Carter was also under fire for being “weak” on defense, another stupid meme. It led to such things as the fiasco trying to rescue the Iranian embassy hostages. Carter got blamed for that but really no president gets that deep into the weeds of such an operation. That fiasco was the sole responsibility of the officer in charge of it, not Carter.
It’s amazing how far we humans will go to avoid the truth we don’t want to hear.
(demi takes a bow. y’all can put your nickels in the can right here.)
Certainly no surprise there. Surely the figure from the US is comparable, although it’s certainly harder to uncover, for PR reasons.
The seducing of unwary, innocent teenagers into the jaws of a crime syndicate (the military) needs to stop.
Lots of people who snore lies about it even me until I was told numerous times, why I wasn’t convinced I was but looking back on it why would people lie to me about that?
If he wasn’t pointedly asked, it could have been a convenient omission.
Don’t bet on it. Obama is thinking 2012. He needs a reason for the expected D losses. He doesn’t want it to be deduced that he or his failed policies were the cause of low turnout. His argument will be that we don’t understand how change happens and we wouldn’t settle for what was there to be gotten.
We ARE in the cross hairs. And the Obamabots will embrace the argument.
I’m hoping all of them. It won’t make any difference though because the “lessons” the Democrats will take away is that they didn’t behave right wing enough.
We ARE in the crosshairs, yes. Is anybody buying what they are selling? I don’t think there are many who are. Even among Kossacks, there isn’t a lot of that anymore.
I hear you, but, imvho, sometimes we have to carry our leaders through the tough parts…
How much are they getting paid they can afford coke for their mercs? Or better question what are they stealing in Iraq to pay for coke?

Rs have accused Ds of being weak on defense forever (one of the reasons for JFK’s preemptive false claims of a missile gap). Ds have forever responded by upping military spending. Dumb shitheads. Didn’t stop the accusations. Shoulda made a case for why the military was plenty big enuf and we should stop being afraid of shadows. But they didn’t, and for a reason, which is that’s the way they wanted it.
Carter is an Annapolis graduate. Hammer being only available tool cliche comes to mind.
Have a good and quick Friday, sir.
travesty
And a nuclear engineer. That didn’t stop the Republicans for portraying him as a dumb hick though. JFK was a genuine war hero. Roosevelt and Truman were no shrinking violets either. Republicans like to portray Dems as weak on defense because the reality is just the opposite so many times. If Carter had a serious flaw, it was the common fault among Democrats that they won’t push back against even the most egregious bullsh*t.
C’mon Mikey, they have a Titanic spine that may get taken to the chiropractor in November.
I agree that there’s an unanswered question as to who will buy it. But that’s definitely what he is selling. It officially kicked off with Gibbs’ “professional left” comment. It will also serve as the excuse for making further “compromises” with the Rs.
This guy is NOT off that bipartisan shtick — the one we think has been so-o-o discredited. His plan is to isolate us from the rest of the Ds. Whether he will be successful or not, I do agree, is an open question.
Next argument Obama will argue White Liberals secretly hate Black People and wanted to control Obama when Obama refused to be controlled by the Left they turned on him.
Never mind Obama governs like he is possessed by the spirt of George Bush!
It hurts my brain to try and think like an Obama adviser its like crawling into a very small box and looking out a peephole with a very restricted self serving view.
Oh , I’d bet it’s meth these days
I’m hip. I’ve agreed with you. I’ve been saying the same thing for weeks, months even.
perfectly said,i blame the TRAD MED….they never hit on the repuke chickenhawk/deferrment issue
Agree there is serious brainwashing done at Annapolis.
Still just how are they paying for it and who are they getting the coke from Iraqi airspace is protected by our fighter planes armed conveys last I heard still bring our army supplies from Kuwait.
If what you say is true then U.S military transport is being used?
Good point about Carter being nuke engineer. And other points too.
I’m off for now. Be well.
Probably a good thing. I bet some/most don’t even know this happened/is happening. they just think American workers/unions were too greedy and so the jobs just….vanished into thin air.
Just like the doctors don’t realize that Medicare/ Medicaid and the insurance corporations are taking all the $$ between them and the state and THAT’S why they’re not getting paid. Nope, instead, they take it out on their patients.
I know this for a fact
I hope you have a wonderful day.
I have been pushing a wealth tax everywhere I post for years – generally to the sound of crickets.
Meanwhile the Republicans unveil their
PledgePlague on America. Tax cuts for corporations and more deregulation. That will fix everything. Yawn.it would not surprise me,going back to the first naval battles, rum was served to the combatants
That they can make on site it makes more sense but Meth makes you crazy maybe even more than coke does.
The Mercs come back to America expect a crime wave but it won’t be 7-11′s they rob they got the experience and fire power to rob banks in big cities and hold off entire police forces.
Yes, it’s like how completely tone deaf can you be? Who the hell bought the pilot for that show? Someone seems to have thought that portraying the Indian workers as being wackos who need to be guided and trained by their American boss would somehow reconcile Americans to having traded their well-paying jobs for the “do you want fries with that?” variety. Sickening.
the problem is too many advocate a 90 % tax, 40 % would be quite adequate
Exactly.
Republicans love Reagan. Let’s go back to the Reagan tax schedule. Call it “The Reagan Values Enshrinement Act” and watch Republican heads explode as they contemptuously vote against it.
Give the media the opportunity to ask them “Why do you hate Reagan?” as they stick a microphone in their faces.
Some wealthy executive who has never had to struggle and has never wondered how this month’s bills were going to get paid.
perfect
gonna go now..bbl
IMHO, between now and the election, we need to move from a critique of what he has done (or not done) to a positive, constructive reiteration of our goals. While I understand and respect the views of those who feel that they must stay home, write in, or vote for an R, I don’t think those are the best alternatives. And I don’t think they put us in the strongest position against a pervasive (but false) argument that what he got was all there was to get.
I think we have to come up with a (new but much the same) litmus test to get our vote. We need to take him at his word. HCR and FinReg were just a start. Okay, what’s the follow up — specifically. We have to be in a position of outlining NEXT STEPS that he and the Ds must take in the next two years to get our vote now and in 2012.
The response that it should be obvious is not sufficient.
maybe it’s the launch of the newest group the rethugs will love to attack. First they came for the American Indians, stole their resources, smothered ‘em in diseased blankets, keep ‘em apartheided to this day. Now they start on the East Indians….
Everybody but Gretch and Wretched Rupert must be feared….
I saw a piece somewhere this week about how Reagan would be far too “liberal” for the teabaggers.
oooh, I like this!
This is not good meth crazed racist merc army backing Prince as the next President? Obama should have bigger worries than the Left.
They are damn near all millionaires themselves.
Is it spinelessness or self interest?
Let’s vote.
Prince isn’t going to run for President. There’s a reason he’s hiding in Dubai.
Yup. The same way armed forces admission standards were lowered to permit criminals to enlist back in the day when recruitment rates were pathetically low. Now it’s time for these folks to be reintegrated into society.
Thought I was the only one who was aware of that; and I have to admit I was completely unaware of most of them myself until I read about them being dismantled.
Carter might not have lost the left if he had made sure we knew about that stuff.
And now those same criminals are becoming police officers because they are seen as having been rehabilitated by the military. Yikes!
that and more, in no particular order. Cayman island accounts, massive bribery and blackmail operations, rove’s 50 year republican dominance, the end of democracy and the elites grabbing everything before it all goes south and on and on
I was aware of it and I was 15 when Carter took office.
Was it the amnesty? Or giving weapons to the terrorists? Or his “cut-n-run” from Beruit? Or raising taxes 8 times? Reagan is to the left of Obama.
Oh, man. I’d love to see the f*^%er lose, too. Hell, the Joker would make a better Mayor. Bring him on! (Maniacal laughter in background.)
I think you’d face the same situation in 2012. They’re not going to change, they’ll just tell you they may consider changing some things if you will pretty please vote for them. And they’ll just keep on playing variations on the same theme.
They focused on tax policy I think.
How could these – cowards – not take a vote on taxes to force the issue? They are afraid it would be used against them? O man they are in for a super big loss no matter what they do. Why not fight back, just a little?
I think the top marginal tax rate during the Reagan administration was about 50%. The latest W cut brought them to 36%. All the caterwauling is over 3%, going from 36 to 39%. Can you imagine the screams and gnashing of teeth over a 14% increase?
Bingo! You answered your own question just by asking it.
Grats to you, but there were literally dozens of smaller programs and initiatives that I had never heard of until I read gleeful articles in the WSJ as they were dismantled. And I had been keeping up, I thought.
Anyone who doesn’t think the Dems are working for the same “people” the R’s are isn’t paying attention.
My question is “do they realize they are destroying America?” are they all just having fun in the “capitalism run riot game” or do they really want to destroy this country?
Because it sure looks like America’s in a Wiemar place or an uncle Joe Stalin guns turned inward society to me.
I agree. I’m not saying that such an approach would be successful. I’m concerned with the optics. Apparently, I am much more worried than most folks about true progressives being smeared by this administration — and the smear sticking.
I am talking about scrapping the income tax entirely and taxing accumulated wealth, starting at 1% annual for amounts in excess of 1 million, graduating it to 5% in excess of 5 million and 20% annual in excess of a billion. And I would include the foundations that the big money has used to shelter their fortunes from the tax collector.
KO & Moore were pretty good last night, but they only tiptoed up to the brink of actually stating the truth: that the vast majority of “Democrats” are hard right now and soley working for the benefit of the top 2%. They just couldn’t quite go there. The fact is: they’re not “afraid” of putting the tax vote out on the table because of potential negative advertising from R’s in the campaigns. They simply don’t want to raise the taxes on their wealthy benefactors.
My jaw actually dropped open when I saw an ad for the “comedy” about workers in India doing jobs that have been outsourced from the USA. Managed to blow my mind, that did. Yeah: what a laff riot that US jobs have been outsourced…
KO’s investigative piece about what constitutes “small business” on Weds 9/22 is worth watching. The definition of “small business” is based on how the business is set up. Many “small businesses” really aren’t small at all, and include all of the Koch Industries. So when you hear R’s whining about how “small businesses” will be so “damaged” by tax increases, think instead that it’s the Koch brothers & hedgefunders & other zillionaire MOTU who are fighting this, as usual.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/
KO hit it out of the park with this piece; wish more citizens would see it.
Thanks for campaigning for Obama, Michael.
Love your movies but when it comes to candidates, you haven’t a clue.
The responsible thing would be to let all the Bush tax cuts sunset on schedule. Polls show majority support for that, it takes no congressional action, it would go a long way toward solving the long-term deficit problem, and anyway if the Dems enact new tax cuts everyone will still call them the “Bush tax cuts.”
The problem with President Obama is the narrative. So here is my suggestion, we need an honest market. A free market means that wall street is free to put a gun to your head and take your money. In an honest market, wall street would be in jail. In an honest market, you could not charge 30% interest on a credit card. The free market gave us this disaster and an honest market will clean it up.
I noticed in the thread, most talk about policies. Most people do not have time to follow the policies, but they can follow an easy narrative. This is why (according to George Lakoff), the Republicans win. If the progressives can change the narrative, they can win.
Yep. It’s the same as Reno 911. Because police brutality is sooooo funny.
Whoa, thought the title of this post meant that MM was ripping on KO and his show for not having enuf progressive spine, an example of the dem’s circular firing squad running amok… glad it wasn’t.
Good ideas. What if the Democrats brought this tax issue up for a vote a few weeks before the election, knowing the whole time it won’t pass. And when Republicans vote against it, use their vote as an appeal to the middle class as evidence that they, the Republicans, are willing to let the middle class take a big financial hit during this recession if it means that their fat cat buddies can’t get a tax cut as well. The Dems need to flush these bastards out and let the public know what they’re really all about.
Country cannot afford another Tax Cut Decade. We already have enough evidence to show it does not work, create jobs nor balance the budgets except enabling the income gap to grow wider. Evidence on the contrary is overwhelming. Economy not only expands but the country infrastructure as a whole improves. Eg. 1950s Era with country having the biggest economic expansion it ever had after a debilitating war with top tier paying 91%. Show an example of another country without progressive taxation having such an expansion after a brutal war. None I know of.
Schools across the country are cutting down and if this continues we will have serious social issues after a decade.
Democrats need to correct this right away or at-least do nothing so that tax cuts simply expire returning to Pres. Clinton levels for all. If they start meddling soon billionaires will be labelled under small business owners as currently aired now and soon we have a continuation of worsening trend seen from start of 2000.
