Enter Project Vote’s new poll (PDF), which focuses on the black, youth and low-income voters who are the opposite of the white, old, affluent teabaggers in almost every way. Not only that, but there’s actually more of them: 32% of the electorate to the tea partiers’ 29. And most amazing of all, when you compare their responses to the country as a whole, it turns out that they’re a lot more mainstream and representative of America than the tea partiers are.
Of course, you’d never know it, because the Koch brothers and the tea parties’ other corporate sponsors aren’t paying for them to show up at Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin rallies with, ahem, “colorful” signs, or at health care townhalls to brandish their guns and shout down congressmembers. And they certainly don’t have an entire cable network dedicated to promoting them. They’re more like the Silent Plurality.
Here are some examples of just who looks more like America:
- A 58% of black, youth and low-income voters favor stimulus spending over deficit-cutting, while a 79% majority of tea partiers prefer deficit-cutting. Voters overall favor deficit-cutting, but only by a 49-45% margin.
- 81% of BYLI voters want more education spending, as opposed to only 41% of tea partiers. 65% of voters overall are in the More camp.
- 79% of BYLI voters want the minimum wage set above the poverty line, but only 41% of tea partiers do. 68% of voters overall agree that it should be increased.
- 62% of BYLI voters believe the federal government should provide jobs for everyone who can’t find work in the private sector, vs. 15% of teabaggers. Again, overall voters disagree, but only by a 53-42% margin, which is pretty remarkable for such a… socialist idea.
- 63% of BYLI voters favor reducing the deficit by increasing capital gains taxes, compared to only 29% of tea partiers. Overall, 58% of voters favor or strongly favor.
- 71% of BYLI voters favor reducing the deficit by bringing our troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, versus 38% of tea partiers. Overall, the number is 59%.
- 60% of BYLI voters favor raising or removing the Social Security payroll tax cap, only 39% of tea partiers do. 54% of voters in general are in favor.
- 63% of BYLI voters believe that “Government should work to provide for the needs of all citizens,” while 74% of tea partiers believe that “Government should do no more than provide national defense and police protection, so that people are left alone to earn whatever they can.” Overall, voters agree with the first statement 50-42%.
- 66% of BYLI voters have more trust in the government to ensure that banks and credit card companies treat them fairly, while 50% of tea partiers trust the banking and credit card industry more. Overall, voters trust the government by a 63-30% margin. Polling on food safety and fraudulent business practices is similar, but with a slight plurality of tea partiers favoring the government.
So yeah, it looks to me like most Americans are okay with the government doing more than just making the world safe for corporations and rich people. The teabaggers may have the skinny end of the megaphone, but that doesn’t make them representative of anything more than the most anti-government wing of the Republican party.
All this is not to say that the Democrats are in great shape for November; they’re not. But it’s not because everyone’s a teabagger who thinks they’re all radical terrorist-hugging socialists, it’s because Obama and the Democrats have underdelivered for the people and overdelivered for the corporations and wealthy. If they had gone a little bit more socialist and passed a stimulus bill that reduced unemployment and a health care reform bill with a public option and drug price negotiation, I think that most voters would have been just fine with that.

And so abysmally fumbled communications.
The real question is why Obama has not even tried to tap into their energy since getting elected?
They’re not his constituents. And I think he believes he can get them whipped up again when he needs them, which is a big mistake.
Although the Project Vote polling looks like they mostly approve and intend to turn out in November. But not as much as the teabaggers.
This is the indictment of Obama that rings truest to me. There has been a deliberate attempt to AVOID giving voice to these folks in the legislative process.
fumbled their lies.
He sure as hell didn’t stand up for ACORN when Congress decided that Andrew Breitbart rules their world.
Across a range of issues on which progressives have been disappointed, there have been large majorities of voters supporting those policies.
With Social Security cuts and upper-bracket tax cuts waiting in the wings.
Fucking shame that the left is leaderless.
and, no – Dr.Dean is not the one to coalesce around.
I find it EXTREMELY odd and telling that he can’t seem to make specific promises to at least try to achieve some progressive goals. He referred to these so-called victories — in HCR and FinReg — as just a start.
Where is the agenda that he will follow if voters leave the Ds in power? This POS isn’t even willing to promise to follow through.
that hit me hard, I am amazed those nutzos have 29 percent of the electorate, I would have been surprised if they had 10, I find out now it’s three times that amount, this is scary stuff eli
Obama dodged the obvious opportunities in a vain attempt to win favor, or to reduce the screaming, from the conservatives. When it didn’t work, he tried again. When it hadn’t worked a half-dozen times, he tried dumping on the progressives while simultaneously trying to appease the conservatives. But even that wasn’t enough to win kudos from the teabaggers. So he apparently took to heart the saying “If you can’t beat em, join em”.
Now he’s on track to screw me on social security, he’s already screwed me on health insurance, and I must consider him an antagonist and not an advocate.
Me too.
Technically speaking, the 29% is people who strongly agree with the Tea Party, so it’s probably the most generous number.
Besides, it did take a while for Dubya’s approval rating to dip below 30.
I think all Obama’s bullshit about bipartisanship is exactly that. It’s just his smokescreen for pursuing a pro-corporate agenda, that he’s just doing it to try to coax Republicans on board.
I mean, wouldn’t a promise to end the wars and put a massive jobs program in place to end the recession make sense — or some variation thereof? What convinces me that this guy is a really bad actor is that he can’t even come up with a sensible fucking promise — to save D majorities.
Another great piece…we have to get it figured out so we can decide what our efforts need to be. Personally I would love for Obama to have been a great, transformational, healing President; what happened? How to get back on course and who are our leaders? Please.
I have kind of been making that point.
Lie, lie your ass off, and make them good ones, especially as the off-year approaches…
So in that respect, maybe we are fortunate that he’s a terrible liar (as well as weak & in-the pocket-of-all-the-wrong-’people’) – hey, he’s so bad at it that we found him out with very little effort.
Gross incompetence.
That’s kinda what I was trying to convey in my semi-rant. I’m sitting here watching RM and just getting pissed off and it’s hard to focus. Maybe Southpark would be better TV fare while I’m trying to make sense.
You know, I’ve had a lot of constructive arguments on this blog. With folks who were absolutely sure that Obama was duplicitous and intended everything that was taking place. I, otoh, argued that he was arrogant and incompetent. I’m starting to think those folks were right and I was wrong.
Ah, okay. Not so much “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” as “If you’ve already joined ‘em, pretend you’re doing a really shitty job of beating ‘em”…
I held out for a long time, too.
I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as merely a go-along-to-get-along, path-of-least-resistance weakling until he suddenly went from ineffectual wet noodle to Man Of Action the second the public option was removed from HCR.
He can get shit done when he wants it. The question is what he wants.
Well, not so much of a question anymore, really…
The people are as usual pissed off at politicians and for good reason wherever you fit on the political spectrum.
The Tea Party can either take over the Rs or form a third party and that would split the R votes and seem like a good thing for them dems – conventional wisdom. But the dem voters are equally pissed at the dems and without their own third party they may just not bother to vote because the choice is once again the lessor of two hideous choices.
The system is completely broke and unresponsive to the needs of the people of this country.
What is RM doing?
Obama is part of the problem and not part of the solution. He fooled the people.
As long as there is a Senate, democracy in the USA is a fabrication.
sadly yes
I wonder where Biden is in all of this? I know he is not perfect, but he had a pretty different record in the Senate…..
Kicking Ass and taking Names Eli keep hammering this:) A fact ridden post with an Edge like this is why I come here.
Biden was always totally in Wall Street’s pocket, Bev.
http://seminal.firedoglake.com/diary/67907
We can win if the GOP doesn’t steal the election like they did the last 2 presidential elections and if Obama gets a spine and starts standing up for our causes.
Thanks! I was trying to figure out how to put together a teabaggers-are-not-America/Democrats-are-not-socialists post, and this poll just dropped right into my lap.
That far? I had thought he had some other goals as well…O dear. Thanks
You can have all the support of BYLI voters you want, but if they don’t vote, they don’t count. Youth in general don’t vote so they will always be at the mercy of the older folks who vote.
I think he is against the wars which could be a winning issue for us if the WH listens to him.
without the Tea Party, how much harder would it be to scare the sheep into voting (D), no matter what?
geez, they are made for you. Enjoy!
for the rest of us, who cares? they’re freaks, they hold no power, they don’t slaughter scores of civilians with flying robots, they don’t funnel countless trillions to the financialist scum who wrecked the economy, these are the things causing real damage, not the rantings of sideshow yahoos.
that little poll up there represents what I would call socialist preferences. Why run away?
This is why I think the Dems are in trouble, because they’ve demoralized so many of the people who turned out for them in 2008 for the first time ever.
Gotta turn new customers into repeat customers to stay in business.
I will repeat….go see the Pat Tillman Story movie and tell all your friends. It is powerful and so well documented. It will show how we have lost our way….LOST our way. There must be those among us as sincere and dedicated as the Tillsmans who can show us our sins and our way back. AT least for now D Cheney has shut up.
This guy should really want to keep the House in D hands. If he’s under the illusion that an R-controlled House will work with him, he’s fucking nuts. They can’t even afford to let him be an effective republican president. They will just shut his ass down.
Now keep on ringing that message until everyone is talking about it. Everytime some MSM hack starts talking about the Tea Bagger numbers point out that the 29% of Tea Baggers are the same numbers of hardcore McCain voters.
Point out the Tea Party domain name was registered before Obama even took office much less did anything.
Point out that Real Libertarians don’t want to Government in their bedroom telling them not to jack off like a certain bloody Satanist wants them too. Figures Satan is against jacking off and a Christian Fundamentalists!
Point out the Tea Baggers can’t even get a crowd the size of an immigration rights march in AZ or anywhere else!
What makes you think he’s against war, his record doesn’t support that.
I’m saying the Democrats are losing because they’re not socialist enough. Although most of the people who are disgusted with them aren’t thinking in terms of left or right, they just know that the economy’s still broken and the corporations are still having their way with us all.
There was a wonderful piece/letter from John LeCarre, and he talked about all people of conscience being glad Ob. was elected. I do think there is that part of reality. I do still feel that to be true. We may not be able to save him from himself. Something in us wanted something good. How do we get back to that?
Agreed! he thinks he can be like Clinton and that the GOP have a Newt he can deal with. The GOP have no Newt in the House and Senate just placeholders with no real power because everyone else was indicted or considered to politically toxic to openly hold power.
Plus the GOP has made it clear they will do anything to stop Obama if the Tea Baggers win they will double down on that policy.
http://www.breitbart.tv/joe-biden-rewrites-history-he-opposed-iraq-surge-before-he-supported-it/
Seems I am wrong:(
This is so important: the voices are crazy: McCain, McConn, Graham, et al. Who is anyone to be a colleague?
Agreed Preach it Brother!
You know, it’s right there for him. Just give the people what they want. Promise to push for a strong public option and use the proceeds to increase SS benefits and lower the retirement age. It doesn’t even matter if the numbers don’t add up.
This guy can keep D majorities by merely doing what the people want him to do — what they elected him to do. That’s how fucking corrupt he is. He lied his ass off to us in the campaign and now can’t even come up with a lie or two to save our asses.
True the GOP does not want to dance and Obama so far has begged, sold us out, changed to become George bush but nothing works the GOP won’t dance with him.
Sorry but he dances to Israel’s tune, even when they give him a personal wedgie. It’s the law. More war, guaranteed. Always.
Obama has earned a primary challenge in 2012, that is if decides to seek another term. He just may take the money and run.
The power of truth…so amazing. Where do you think Michele is in all of this? She’s no idiot.
Is that Biden’s record?
Honestly, I don’t think she’s consulted on any of it.
Well, duh. Icky negro. /s
Maybe the whole thing is so much angrier and scarier than he thought; I think the threats against him are real. Who needs it? He’s got 2 kids.
This election the Blue Dogs are in the most trouble Blanche maybe most of all we were right to oppose her.
Obama walks out of the next election with fewer Blue Dogs even if he were to go Left and try and win.
I agree he probably won’t go Left but its not us who can be blamed for losing the election its Obama and the blue Dog policies.
The media will try and spin it but our progressives will either do fine or be out spent massively if they do lose.
She spent the whole show talking about the DADT vote. Calling out various Senators for hypocritical statements…last year they favored it, this year they don’t…three years ago they attached so-n-so amendment, this year they opposed the same amendment, etc.
Sometimes you must state the obvious because the MSM never will say the Tea Baggers hated Obama even before he became President because he’s Black.
Are the people the power in this country? Or the NYC financial engineers?
Tea Party Patriots hope to resolve this question, shortly.
Just as the pukes successfully turned the word “liberal” into plutonium, they also turned smart/professional/outspoken first ladies into the same.
And sadly, we let them.
And she strongly called out the WH for not making a decision simply not to enforce it — iirc
This thread has been very helpful to me. Obviously he came in on a big wave of idealism; the other side was never going to go along (see McCrazy). So he tried to deal, downplay, compromise; end of story. Pleased no one. Tragic figure in classical sense. I would not blame him for leaving the stage.
We could all die at any moment.
Personally, I hope both his kids turn out gay and stop speaking to him.
“I am amazed those nutzos have 29 percent of the electorate”
Read this and you will understand:
http://kfmonkey.blogspot.com/2005/10/lunch-discussions-145-crazification.html
“I think you have to assume a 27% Crazification Factor in any population.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Biden
This issue gets more complex he seems to on our side but he is no accomplishing anything yet. His votes for the war were based on intelligence we were making fun of at the time.
I think he voted for the war because it was popular and he thought we could win. His votes are acts that effected the world his intent now has not done squat plus can we trust Washington rumors that have yet to accomplish anything in the real world?
Obama was rumored to be with us on Healthcare I prefer to judge on real world acts.
The way Laura Ingraham and her mouth pieces have gone after her has been sinful, cruel, unbelievable. The level of mockery without equal. It has really made no sense to me except mean girl, jealous cruelty.
Emotional Thinkers are normal unless threatened by fear, hate ect then they rally around the leader and turn against all outsiders.
She has an adopted Hispanic daughter but she is against immigration? When her daughter gets beat up at school because she Hispanic and comes home crying lets see if Laura is a Mom first or a Cartoon character villain first.
And helpful to me also. Thanks in particular for your insights.
Thanks. At our best, huh. B
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Ingraham#Personal
Maybe her anger and trouble with men come from not being intouch with her own desires the family genetics might be there.
He’s definitely lost his mojo and it’s unlikely to come back.
And that’s pretty d***d good! :-)
And has since adopted a son from Russia, I believe. That is interesting. Someone way earlier had suggested she had something going with Lindsay Graham. Who knows? She is very shrill, Im sorry to say.
Good evening Eli :) and everyone :)
Sorry to go OT, but I need comprehensive(reputable/factual) coverage/history/background of Aafia Siddiqui, (I’m arguing with an idiot) her children and her journey through hell please….
And, does anyone have more about this nugget?
‘According to a dossier prepared by U.N. investigators for the 9/11 Commission, Siddiqui was one of six alleged al-Qaeda members who bought blood diamonds in Liberia immediately prior to the September 11, 2001, attacks.[40] Alan White, former chief investigator of a U.N.-backed war crimes trial’
So odd I had checked back in…now back out. This was thoughtful and helpful. G’night.
I really think virtually the whole country is in the thrall of Adam Smith and Ayn Rand. Obama too. Listening to Jimmy Carter his liberalism, determination to do the right thing etc seemed almost from a foreign country. That kind of thinking was commonplace just that few years ago. Now it is all about profit, selfishness and Newt Gingrich meanness.
Biden is I believe the youngest Senator ever elected, @ 28 or so. Is that the whole record?
Well done, Eli.
Not sure all this talk about the (elected) democrats as spineless is right. It’s simply a “business decision” that directs their voting. They’re only willing to do things that benefit the peoples interests when weighed against how much it will cost them in lost short term contributions, and long time future employment (lobbyist) opportunities. The counter example of an Allen Greyson is the exception rather than the rule. Because what he does is actually not that amazing or innovative, but is really just a simple matter of speaking basic truths on the issues. It only seems remarkable because most other representatives refuse to speak the truth so plainly as to be unmistakable, which more than anything an indictment on how toxic and rare the truth (about anything) has become.
I believe it was Sonny Boy Williamson who sang of the evils of “fattening frogs for snakes”. Which is usually what our votes really amount to.
That is the way America has been set up.
Any idiot knows that job creation begins on Main Street. That is where industry began, that is where the workers came from, and ultimately that is where the money comes from.
For far too long we have let a vocal few dictate the policies of our government, in which the culmination of their disastrous influence, now lays bare at our feet.
And what do we do? Nothing!
We let the rich rape and pillage America much worse than the British ever thought of doing.
What irks me the most are the lemmings that follow them and call themselves the “Tea-Party”! Nothing could be further from the truth.
I guess the truth is they like being punked…and we sit and watch and do nothing because we know what is going on. They are so stupid they haven’t a clue!
By the way, the Democrat’s are not that great either! At least over the past 60 years. As bad as they are, they don’t come close to the neocons that turn this country into an oligarchy.
We have been at war my whole life and I was in Vietnam. I am sick of those in this country who let a few TAKE so much from them, including their dignity, without so much as a whimper. Pretty sad when half of those with full time jobs are homeless and live in the woods and all most could care less! Me, I’m just tired!
I meant half of the homeless have full-time jobs. Actually one-half of ALL American taxpayers and their families earn less than $30,000 a year and they all pay more in taxes than 1/2 of the Fortune 500, to include GE and Exxon who pay absolutely zero and have the audacity to complain about taxes.
It took Dr. Dean less than a week after “kill the bill” to endorse this mandated patient killing for profit regime we have now, so I agree with you. I wouldn’t trust Kucinich to lead the movement, either, for the same reason (although he didn’t cave until Obama offered him a ride on Air Force One).
We keep hearing how tone-deaf the administration is… but, really, they are totally wrong on the substance of almost everything. People, especially likely voters, really notice their being so wrong on substance.
I have to agree.
