Welcome to Episode 1 of Boardwalk Empire, or “how they f&#&ed the country with prohibition the first time.”
The watch parties for the Martin Scorsese HBO series, which premieres tonight at 9pm ET, are being sponsored by the Just Say Now campaign. In the upcoming weeks, we’ll be having hosts like Aaron Houston of Students for Sensible Drug Policy and our friends at the Drug Policy Alliance. It’s a great opportunity to talk about how alcohol prohibition impacted the country in the early part of the last century, and what parallels can be drawn with marijuana prohibition today.
Lights…camera….popcorn…action!

Uh, where’s the movie linky?
Or is this all make believe?
Obviously, I’m cornfuzzled.
lol
Well, at least his thank you was sincere.
Where are we watching it? Costumes look really cool.
About time Steve Buscemi got a great leading role.
HBO.
HBO, I guess.
Sorry CBL!
(to the tune of 3 Blind Mice)
Gangsters Then;
Gangsters Now!
See how it’s dumb
See how it’s dumb
They all pretend it’s some moral things
They set up jerks to be money kings
The politicians kiss their rings!
(They were) Gangsters then
(They are)Gangsters now
Here It Is.
Hiding just under the end of Mz. Hamsher’s front page post . . . in the Related Posts Box.
Clever lil devils.
Whoops, that was just a trailer.
Ah, HBO, I see. Thanks folks. No cable here.
Dang. Toke up and drink a shot every time they say Feds with derision!
On with the show!
Plus ça change, plus c’est la meme chose.
Every time I see Buscemi, I think of him holding his cheek with a tissue, and yelling, “HOW DO YOU SPLIT A CAR?!”
“Criminal” gangsters and political gangsters. They’re all the same. Nucky by the way was a Republican.
I love the part when Buscemi gets up in front of the Women’s Temperence League and tells the big sob story about himself as a kid victimized by alcoholics, which turns out not to be true.
Reminds me of that Kerlikowske press conference.
wasn’t directed at you – I’m just a piss ant about it
slow going thus far….
Or Monty Python’s Four Yorkshiremen…
You were quite “lucid.” :)
Just having some rhyme fun.
What a GREAT cast for this series (thought it was a movie).
Steve Buschemy is easily one of my most fav in the past 20 years.
His work as character actor in so many films, and the roles he takes, are incrediby.
Wow, what a cast.
Thanks Mz. Hamsher and sorry I won’t be seeing this . . . not a lot on TV that’s worthy, you seem to have called in on the nose with this one!
GREAT moment! He nailed it!
“With a f**king chainsaw?!”
I’m thinking I’d look pretty good in one of those snappy fedoras.
Nucky’s girlfriend kinda spoiled his Benevolent Public Servant vibe just a wee bit, I think…
Oh absolutely. You would’ve been a fabulous & very stylish bootlegger, masaccio.
Jimmy looks like “the guy you get when you can’t afford Leo DiCaprio.”
No HBO here, but it looks like a great cast.
That is a lovely car.
‘zactly.
That period blue Rolls is fab. I read they found it in Maine.
been intrigued with him since Murder by Numbers
I think Jimmy’s going to be a bit of a problem…
What have you guys been smoking? Any left? S)
In a good way or a bad way?
Obviously the wingnut welfare machine is not sufficiently developed yet.
Santino Corleone’s speech about military service is for suckers
He’s going to be a loose cannon. Bad temper, overinflated sense of his own self-worth.
Poodles have a zero tolerance policy so it’s chocolate ice cream for us.
Kelly MacDonald — long way from Trainspotting.
Sense of entitlement is probably more accurate, really.
Loved her in “Gosford Park”
I believe that… probably stowed in some barn in the boonies.. seen a few classics in barns when I lived back there..
took me ’til about a minute ago to figure out she was Josh Brolin’s wife in No Country for Old Men
Wow, completely forgot that!
silent movies!! Great!
Mmmmm . . . chocolate ice cream. Do you
growmake your own?(I made a nice chocolate chip ice cream using dark Ghirdelli chips a couple of weeks ago. Very, very good. Gotta go see if there’s any left . . .)
Fatty Arbuckle!
I’m not sure where they sourced those but it would not surprise me if it was not Optimo in Chicago.
that was oldnslow’s guess – he’s a hat diva
Sunday Movie night at the Lake. Pass the popcorn were in Hollywood now, Reminds me of “Sting” a bit.
Worst. Assistant. Ever.
Did I need to see Steve Buscemi having sex with some chick bouncing up and down on top of him?
Oy.
Now that you mention it, you’re right. The production design is very reminiscent of The Sting.
No, Breyer’s from the grocery store. The dogs are quite fond of it.
It’s an HBO historical series…
Poodle don’t need help they are on a natural. So am I. Just broke my record running up the horse trails need my lungs. Others can speak for themselves.
“Boardwalk Empire’s” production designer Bob Shaw , art director Doug Huszti and set decorator Carol Silverman
Well, there ARE private custom hat makers out there (like the guy who did the hats for the latest Indiana Jones film) but I’ll put my money on Optimo especially if they are doing Hombergs..
Sophie Tucker?
think it was Bessie Smith
Bang your done! Some fish anyone??
Whoa.
That was a bit over the top.
Just a bit gratuitous.
this is a scorsese classic shaping up to be….
I can’t find the music credits on the internets.
will watch again closer now cuz reading comments got in my way lol
First episodes can be thankless, and Scorsese’s college professor style probably wasn’t that well suited for it.
They should let whoever is cutting the trailers have a go.
What about the casting so far?
i’m zero tolerance also. Violently allergic to the stuff, which was very embarrassing to a farmgrrrlll desperate to be a cool hippie chick way back in the day. If i’m around the smoke, my sinuses swell up like a bad cold and i turn into a mouth-breahter for 3 days whereas cig smoke the reaction is just a few hours of misery.
But all prohibition does is lead to crime . . . just say now!
me either
a bazillion links like this –
and you were right about Sophie Tucker
OT– Lady GaGa’s on a roll according to this post by Joe Sudbay:
{ snippy-snip }
That chick has guts.
RAWK ON, LADY GAGA!!! I love the way she’s showing how it’s done and I totally celebrate that. BTW, you FirePupkins do too. Power to you all! :)
No kidding – and using an embedded supporter base.
Reminds me of a certain someone…
It’s HBO. They have to have some gratuitous sex scenes thrown in just because they’re HBO. Sometimes they work, other times they’re doing the same thing that exploitation movies did in the 60′s and 70′s with naked women. Except HBO has a bigger budget.
Looks like the GaGa-nator is triggering a tsunami of activity … Ya’ll rock out now, ya’ hear?
oooh thanks – hoping Senator Webb gets the same treatment :D
