DE-SEN (R): Mike Castle 47%, Christine O’Donnell 53%.
NH-SEN (R): Kelly Ayotte 36%, Ovide Lamontagne 44% with 20% reporting.
NH-02 (D): Katrina Swett 24%, Ann McLane Kuster 76%.
NY-GOV (R): Rick Lazio 27%, Carl Paladino 73% with 19% reporting.
NY-14 (D): Carolyn Maloney 85%, Reshma Saujani 15% with 8% reporting.
Yes, it’s primary night once again in America. Or at least on the Liberal Hippie East Coast… and Wisconsin. And as is so often true, it’s looking like a referendum on each party’s political direction. All three Republican races above feature a Tea Party candidate against a more establishment one, and both Democratic ones feature a conservative Blue Dog type against a progressive.
In the Delaware Republican Senate primary, moderate Rep. Mike Castle is currently losing handily has lost to Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell, who has also scored the much-coveted Sarah Palin endorsement. Castle is would have been very general-electable in DE, O’Donnell… not so much. But I guess Tea Party + Sarah Palin was just too much crazy mojo for a Republican to overcome.
The NH Republican Senate primary is a little trickier, as the establishment candidate, Attorney General Kelly Ayotte, picked up the Sarah Palin endorsement, but harder-right regular attorney Ovide Lamontagne is the darling of the teabaggers. Yes, that’s right, Sarah Palin disagrees with the Tea Party on something.
The NH-02 Democratic primary features anti-marriage equality “Queen of the Liebercrats” Katrina Swett vying for Paul Hodes’ seat against progressive Ann McLane Kuster. So… pretty easy to pick a side there. Update: W00t!!!
The NY-GOV Republican primary has Rick Lazio, the guy who got crushed by Hillary, in the role of Establishment Democrat, and Carl Paladino in the role of Crazy Rich Guy Who The Tea Party Loves Because They’re So Totally Populist. As best I can tell, Sarah Palin has not endorsed either one of them, which seems uncharacteristically wise. The outcome is more curiosity than anything else, since they’re basically just competing to see who loses to Cuomo.
And finally, in the NY-14 Democratic primary, it’s progressive Carolyn Maloney against the Wall Street candidate, Reshma Saujani. It takes a lot of nerve to run so unapologetically as the Goldman Sachs candidate right now, and I am expressing my admiration for her courage by rooting for her to lose so badly that her political career is vaporized.
These races are just the highlights according to me: Jon has a much more comprehensive roundup here.

About Firedoglake
Thanks for the election coverage Eli, and good evening
Maddow finally found, and is airing, Christine ‘you can’t masturbate without lust’ O’Donnell’s anti-wanking crusade video.
Good Luck, Delaware.
Evening, egreg.
Like a gift from heaven. Although I do worry that *any* right-wing crazy has a chance to get elected this year…
Masturbation has just conceded to O’Donnell in Delaware.
good grief.
Eli! O’Donnel Coverage from you? Say it ain’t so!
Back to making dinner here. Sheesh.
That was so creepy, wasn’t it? Ewwww… Who would want to have sex with that woman’s attitude. Rhetorical, of course.
OMG! Rachel just said something like, women are pissed that Hillary was beat out by Obama, and so, they (the womens) are voting for the females. Like this O’Donnell (Don’t touch my you know what).
Couldn’t have said it better, myself. Eli !
And, yet.
Ruh, roh. It’s comin’.
Pretty sure you have the swett and kuster numbers mixed up – kuster is winning
Petro !
Oops, right you are. Fixed now.
I was hoping you didn’t have secret numbers I didn’t have. Go Kuster!
*ouch* Aloha, Eli and Ya’ll…! ;-)
And the gap is actually *widening*. Still early tho.
It is, but I’m hearing good things from the campaign. They’re cautiously optimistic.
Yay! I want my country back from Teh Solitary Self-Love! About time somebody stood up!
hahahaha (well, also crying, kinda)
Wow, remember 2006? When challenging the establishment of the party (Democrats) was absolute apostasy? Funny how we aren’t hearing so much of that — except from Maddow — as the GOP favorites fall in Colorado, Utah (incumbent!), Alaska (incumbent!), Delaware (practically an incumbent!) Kentucky (favorite of the Senate Minority Leader in his own state!).
Yet somehow, this is just another Tea Party at the beach, not an insurgency as the bloggers were in the Democratic party in 2006.
Was thinking about that earlier today. As much as this is electoral suicide, can’t help but being a tad jealous.
The law of unintended consequences might save the Senate for the Democrats.
All year the fear has been the Tea Party’s energy could swing the Senate to the GOP. But, it seems this energy may have cost the GOP a clean sweep of Delaware, Kentucky, Nevada and Alaska. They will be fortunate to break even in these states and therefore very unlikely to gain a majority in the Senate.
Gotta wonder if Beau Biden wishes he’d run for his dad’s seat in Delaware after all…
The teabaggers are Patriotic Heartland Americans, progressive bloggers are just dirty hippies in pajamas.
Sitting Bull and Rain in the Face might have something to say about the outcome, methinks.
Oops!
Especially considering the kid-gloves treatment the teabaggers are getting from Legacy Media, while we were called bomb throwers and smelly hippies not four years ago in Connecticut.
swett just conceded! game over! go kuster!
Your beverage, sir?!
…this is just another Tea Party at the beach…
Hey, Mon…! You’re giving beaches a bad name…! ;-)
What we’ve learned tonight is that both party’s establishments are despised.
DC support is the kiss of death. (metaphorically speaking)
And the Democrats in Delaware are celebrating.
I’m still trying to figure out whether to call Saujani establishment or not…
Dude! You were just bemoaning the dig on masturbation, and, you’re married!
Given the way that Angle is running against Reed in NV, it might be a mistake to write off the teabaggers in the general election. The American electorate is not a bunch of happy campers.
There’s more to the Reid/Angle race than usual. Harry Reid is an especially crappy majority “leader” and widely despised by even the Democratic apologists over at the Orange Satan where I think less than 30 percent approves of the job he’s doing on the last poll of readers.
If it were any other year, I would be rubbing my hands together in anticipation of all these unelectable teabagger crazies getting slaughtered. But *this* year, I’m not so sure.
They probably will help dampen the wave a little bit, but enough will win to make the Republican caucus even more crazy than it is now.
I’m with you. I was hoping Castle would win and maybe depress the teabaggers. I remember reading that neither Fiorina nor Whitman would have a chance. So much for that.
…and thanks, Eli. Love live-blogging results.
Eli @ 36:
There’s something to that.
I greatly respect the Republican Party’s decision to do itself in, but how much of the Republic remains when the deed is finally done is the thing that keeps me up nights.
I fully expect Reid to lose in November.
And I don’t care, either.
I’m wondering about that. There are still moderate voters who have been voting Republican and the teabagger victories might not make them vote Democratic but it’s bound to keep some of them home. Almost all of the truly independent voters are going to break for Democrats in races vs teabaggers I think.
I just got off a 20-minute telephone “survey” that originated from a company called “Universal Survey.” To say that the questions were tedious and stupid would be to dignify the interminable process. (Shit, I thought “I Love Lucy” went on for a long time, but this thing?) After the call ended, I promptly went to (what I hope was) the website and removed my number. After that, I made yet another attempt at removal through the National Do Not Call Registry. Maybe the umpteenth time will be the charm.
O’Donnell in Delaware, eh? So will she stop campaigning when she grows hair on her palms, or wait until she goes blind?
And Eli: I take your point at #4. This year, all bets are off. It’s Batshitacular.
*heh* A full hysterectomy behooves me to take matters into my own hands at times…! My plumbing still works…! *sheesh* ;-)
It’s not the folks at DKos that vote in Nev. Reed has managed to get elected senator there five times. The fact that he is now in serious trouble against an opponent that most people in NV don’t seem all that enthusiastic about raises a lot of questions.
Castle was pro choice and pro stem cell research. He was labelled most liberal Republican Senator. That is a deal killer in today’s Conservative Movement of forced births and anti-science.
He was also a career politician. Tea PArty no likey establishment pols. Can’t blame them on that particular point.
Addition by subtraction, IMO.
Maybe he’ll run as an independent. I’d love that since the repubs have already disowned O’Donnell.
Nevada has the highest unemployment rate of any state: officially over 15%.
Harry Reid has led the Senate Majority for four years. People punish the party in power. It’s inexorable. A junkyard dog — which Sharron Angle is NOT — could beat Reid in Nevada this year.
And Angle probably will do so.
Does anyone know if Delaware has a sore loser law? I asked this about Christine last week; now I’m asking about Castle.
I get that. Contrary to popular belief I have a brain. I have said many times how glad I am to not live in Nevada where I would be forced into choosing between Reid, Angle or staying home. And I’ve answered the questions that his weak support in Nevada raises: He’s been weak, ineffective and he’s roundly loathed.
wiki sez:
Castle, a direct decendent of Benjamin Franklin, had two small strokes in 06.
OMG, Paladino’s leading??? He’s the craziest of all. Of course, only 6% in so the night’s young.
Reid would have had a much harder time against a more credible candidate. The fact that even Angel s giving him a run for his money shows how unpopular he is.
I will take Reid over Angle.
The idea of addition by subtraction is generally fool’s gold in American politics. This is paticularly true when it would mean elevating a nut like Sharon Angle into the Senate.
Come on!
I think she will too. What concerns me is that the same thing could happen with teabagger candidates in other states. The assumption that having the TB candidate win the GOP primary is great news for Dems seems questionable to me.
i have just got home, and sat down…good eve all
The Repubs might have disowned O’Donnell for now, but if they’re salivating for the seat – and it appears they are – I would not be surprised to see them walk it back. But even little Billy Kristol has said that “she’s no Sarah Palin,” …for whatever in the hell that’s supposed to mean…
ANGLE=….Sara Palin minus Sara Bellum
Yeah, he made it *sound* like it was supposed to be an insult, but…
Reid was awesome with the gutting of FISA and Retroactive Immunity for the Telecoms.
He kept bringing back the bill amid considerable protest from the online community (and others) to get it voted on and passed.
The former boxer is an absolute hero to AT&T.
i saw PETROVANUSKIs boots here
Did you read TBogg’s piece? O’Donnell once sued her former employer for firing her. “Loss of Pleasure” in her life after firing.
Do you think The Democrats chances would be better if he Tea Party candidates hadn’t won in Delaware, Kentcky, Nevada and Alaska? No way!
when he was here at the lake he was a scared rabbit
That assumption is looking more hollow by the day. This year, all bets are off. And I share your concern about states other than Nevada, particularly as regards the Senate.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski won’t run as a Libertarian. Will decide Friday about a write-in campaign.
Missed it. I’ll check it out.
Yes, Republicans will hold their noses and vote for her, but the Indies won’t. As a consequence Delaware’s Senate seat stays with the Democrats.
I’m not saying that they would be better or worse against the TBs. I’m saying that the Dems can’t take a win for granted because a TB got the nomination. The electorate is in a sufficiently nasty mood to vote against the Dems no matter what.
Yeah. The only time he’s effective is when he’s behaving as a corporate whore.
Now that I’ll agree with.
Yes, I was here for that. Good Times, pummelling the lying Reid.
I agree that the dems will do better against the Teabaggers…but if they lose anyway, the country’s in that much more trouble.
In other words, if the holders of the GOP checkbook (and other friendlies) green-light a write-in campaign.
*heh* I remember that thread… He hemmed and hawed and departed quickly with his tail between his legs…! Apparently, he was ill informed by his staff at what to expect…! ;-)
Yup. And the person who defeated him does horribly against Jeff Coons:
I don’t know if you’ve ever been on the wrong end of discrimination in the workplace, but the language required in the suit is pretty obscure and odd, depending upon the state. I’ve had to file EEOC complaints and was amazed at the language my attorney used.
I find the presumption of idiocy on O’Donnell’s part, because she filed a discrimination claim, to be misogynistic on the whole. We can find LOTS to criticize her for without bothering with her lawsuit for wrongful termination.
Wrongful termination happens all the time in America, and the language needed to prove it is weird and legalistic, bearing no relation to reality.
Cornyn nearly gagged on his own tongue earlier today when asked if he’d back O’Donnell.
weasel without the lovely fur(mink)
Yes, it is possible a couple of these nut jobs will get elected. But, that isn’t going to happen in Delaware.
I wonder about that. Do Alaskans have to spell her last name right?
anybody get my yoke? @58
LOL!!!
Let the tap-dancing begin. Should make for some good comedy.
“In a stunning upset, Barbara Mikulski appears to have won the Alaska Senate race.”
There’s a PPP poll out showing that Castle voters support Coons over O’Donnell 44%-28%. Like I said, just because a teabagger wins, they aren’t automatically going to pick up those Republican voters.
EDIT: I forgot to provide a link but I’m sure all of you can make it over to the Orange Satan if you wish.
The only hope of Democrats holding the Delaware seat was O’Donnell winning. No one thinks it’ll be a cakewalk in Nevada, Alaska, Colorado, or anywhere else for that matter.
But Delaware was lost to Democrats if Castle was the nominee. That’s not the case tonight, thus the celebration among Democratic partisans.
No guarantees this year, but Democrats are in *better* shape if they’re facing teabaggers.
But probably in worse shape if they lose.
But that makes a double negative…
O’Donnell live on MSNBC now.
Thanking the 912 patriots in Delaware now, the Founders Values group, adn all the Tea Party groups in Delaware. You guys are the patriots who made this possible. You created this grassroots network. Also thank the Tea Party Express, our lawyer, and my father.
O’Donnell says “my mother is a spunky woman.”
Presented without comment.
She’s a lot like Cornyn. What’s not to like Big John? Christine will jump on the Fascist Gravy Train so fast it’ll make Cornyn’s big ol head spin.
Pony up the dough, boys. You know you will.
lol
Now re-telling the ‘spit on me’ Vietnam vet fiction that Will Bunch mentioned in his book.
What I would like to see happen is for Reid to be re-elected to the Senate and then removed as Majority Leader. That is what they did to Robert Byrd.
LMAO! And she says she’s against masturbation….I guess her father is not.
They’d only put Baucus in…
What group of Democrats would oust Reid? He does the bidding of Obama, The New Democrat Caucus (blue dogs) and the Blue Dogs.
And Lieberman(D). Don’t forget Lieberman(I). The most influential Senator from AIPAC, The Hartford and Phizer.
You beat me… and my pick was Conrad.
But ok.
Exactly. Same with Reid and Angle. If he had a sane opponent, he’d be in Blanche Lincoln territory right now.
Yeah…either or… Wanking Dems.
barffffffffffffffffffffffff
No one seems to remember that Christine O’Donnell was the GOP nominee against Joe Biden just two years ago.
Oh, they will. Eventually. Maybe.
Or they focus on a race they can win, like taking out Harry Reid.
Good one!
