Ray Charles — In The Evening (When The Sun Goes Down), 1963.
What’s on your mind?
Brother Ray! Suz!
Oh man, Suz!
hey LL — some jazzy ray! how’s va tonight?
hey newton — how’s the west bay tonight?
That song actually went pretty well with the music I have going on my stereo. Odd when things work together like that.
Jazzy and awesome, great pick! I do love me some Ray.
All’s quiet on the eastern front here, weather continues very nice but still dry. How’s the OR coast?
hey hannibal — how ya doing tonight?
Tea Baggers drive the GOP more right with unelectable candidates. The baggers need to win real elections now they need to talk about jobs and people losing their homes.
Tax cuts for the rich, Obama a Muslim won’t cut it.
We need to broadcast the crazy.
foggy all day and a fine mist — supposed to get some rain later this week. still hitting the mid to high 60′s in the daytime :) a good thing
Nice here. Cooled off a little.
You freezing up there?
hey things — how ya doing tonight?
Nice Horn action, Suz…!
aloha tut — how’s paradise tonight?
A Little Joe Cocker…
Oh, and Campus Progress made me want to never vote again, ever. Dumb shit bastards with their “Do it for Bieber” GOTV nonsense. Never have I wanted to vote less than I did after seeing that.
hey nahant — how’s deadwood city? we all get by with a little help from our friends…
I’m great, just watched an old episode of Buffy, the musical one. Almost as good as Hush, but in totally different ways.
*shrudder* *nuther shrudder*
hilarious, love the captions ;-)
Not to toot one’s own horn…! ;-)
We need to get regular GOPers to run from the Tea Baggers Gov Perry in Texas on the AZ immigration issue comes to mind as an example.
getting along… but ya should pay attention to the sub titles… you will get along…
And actually that’s one of my favorite performances from the movie — love the freaks singing backup falsetto!
on edit — I was only 9 at the time, born too late…I so would have been there if I’d have been a few years older…
Any Tea Baggers hate Social Security we need the GOP Leaders who ever they are to be asked if they support that before the election.
Ask their parents instead.
miles and john
for sure LL.. still have memories of that week end..
Why bother? The Democratic party’s going to gut it after the elections anyways.
i’m smiling and trying to not wake up the critters dood :) tis very very funny — sorta reminds me of the popcorn muppets video a few weeks back
I remember you saying you were there — how cool! You’re the only person I’ve ever talked with who was there. Man, what an experience it must have been…
In the evening…
Hi Suz, LL, everyone.
President Obama’s Simpson’s Magic 8-Ball says it is decidedly so.
We need the GOP to go hard against Pot everything we want and Obama hates or blames the GOP for not being able to pass we need to make an issue this election.
Then as the Baggers run even farther to the right on these issues and mostly lose we claim credit and leave Obama no fig leafs to hide behind.
I am an evil genius:)
hey margot — how’s ohio tonight?
My cousin and two other friends went.. it was right after Uncle Sam said I could become a civilian again… Thank you very much ☺
Another Woodstock performer
Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Richie Havens
(yeah I know it’s not from Woodstock, but I love the song)
Not if those issues are the reason the Baggers astro turf loses and the public knows thats why they lost. We need town hall meetings to drum up press coverage.
Indian summer, really nice and dry.
Anyone care for a cup of tea?
Hiya Margot :-)
neuro!!! long time no see your fonts — how’s kansas?
Tea Baggers drive the GOP more right with unelectable candidates.
Yes, but the Dems will follow them right of the right end of the charts. Rahm says: “Don’t leave any daylight, and by God they’re not leaving much.”
Hey Suzanne. How’s the North tonight?
Who dat stranger??
hey wigwam — damp with a fine mist falling. how’s the southland tonight?
Anyone for some blues?
I had a free pass to Intel Developer Forum up in the city today. Some cool technology coming to make it easier to get use out of multi core chips.
Got home and had another recruiter email. Plus a second phone interview on Thursday – company didn’t want me for one job, but seems to still be interested in me, 2 calls for another job.
Earl Grey would be lovely. Hey neuro, long time indeed!
The GOP had a civil war the press never talked about it we need to identify the losers and who in the GOP lost influence. When Power changes hands someone always loses.
We know McCain supported immigration I don’t see the Tea Baggers the GOP base rushing to support him this election they will vote but not for him.
Perry force him to declare for or against immigrants he either pisses Hispanics off or his base.
We need more local intel to get more ideas.
Nobody cares that much about the Teabaggers. They’re just assholes with poorly spelled signs. The only people who pay attention to that shit are political junkies. Might play a role in the primary, but come November, it’s all about the economy.
hey wmd — that’s good news re the second phone interview :) how ya doing tonight?
she looks so blitzed ;-)
Hey, Suzanne. KS is OK, it’s still summer here, although the nights are getting to be a little more bearable…it’s been a hot summer.
Hey, nahant. Thought I’d better see if my password still worked–or if I still remembered it.
totally fall here. some of the apples on the trees are ripe and the rest almost are. was sorta the summer that wasn’t around here.
It’s beautiful. Just fucking beautiful. Overly warm today, but right now the temp is moving toward low seventies.
Hey. On a another thread, I just now posed the following question:
How would the People’s Republic treat corrupt officials who ran the economy into the ditch? Here we can’t even get them to forgo a bonus.
Would Lurk censor me if I indicated what happens to people like Rubin and Summers in the People’s Republic?
I’ll take some too. Hi Neuro!
As long as we’re on a Woodstock kick
in case you are sleepy Ten Years After
probably :) but i think you were able to bypass lurk with what ya just said
Kind of tired. Good to do some professional development work.
good to hear from ya hope all is well with you and yours..
~~~A wait-and-see attitude is the rule. No promises.~~~
The Blue Dogs will but if we divide the GOP maybe even they can win if they get with our program.
Force the GOP to declare on the issues why neither side has any ideas about issues the voters care about. The Dems want to scare voters with the thought of a GOP Congress thats not enough we need to divide the GOP.
Tax cuts for the rich will not play to older White Male Tea Baggers if we link that to cuts in Social Security we force the GOP to declare for Social Security against the Tea Baggers.
We force AZ immigration as an issue in heavy Hispanic states by asking do you support AZ.
We tell Farmers you can grow pot and save the Family Farm.
from working at the forum?
Whoa now…another fave performance. Alvin Lee kicked ass there.
And, it would be for a good cause: “Pour encourager les autres.”
And their ideas on the economy tax cuts for the rich as we cut Social Security will play over really well if we make it an issue and force the GOP to either declare with the Baggers or deny them.
The GOP Civil War is not over lets make it worse.
*sigh* Like lemmings right over the cliff…! Good Riddance…! 8-(
If you’re going to go on a Woodstock kick, can’t forget Jimi (No, not the song you’re thinking of)
Show trial Texas ending?
Wasn’t working it, learning about new technology. Bunch of travel time, also bit of a walk from 4th & King to Moscone, hard on arthritis.
a wee bit of his blues… always great.
The Dems want to scare voters with the thought of a GOP Congress thats not enough …
I found that quote from Harry Truman again last night: “When you run a republican against a Republican, the Republican wins every time.”
So far as I’m concerned, Blue Dogs are worse than Republicans, because they get to vote on who leads the Dems in Congress.
Dayam, Lurk…! Btw, could I distract interest ya in some fine Dark Chocolate covered pecans…? ;-)
ouch — i know that kinda hard…. and those kinda commutes
This born-too-late hippie and a friend of mine will be trying to score tickets to one of Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles at his place in Woodstock in the not too distant future…wish us luck!
of course there is always Janis!
I’m trying to discredit the agenda they use to justify being blue dogs saving a few of them is icky. But I want to get rid of the fig leafs.
ooooh luck luck and more luck ll
More Blues. Gotta get a presentation together for interview end of next week.
Thanks Suz, and I’ll definitely keep you posted!
but ya can never forget Santana
A question: after the election is done, we all look back and survey the wreckage.
We know the TeaBaggers are going to take some seats, and we know the BlueDogs are going to keep some seats, and both will be largely because they have instilled fear in their respective districts/states.
But will anyone in any political sphere fear the Progressives? And if not, how do we make that happen?
omg yes…Michael Shrieve stole the show in this one!
I want to destroy the GOP crazy I want them to win less than expected and I want GOP Tea Bagger civil war on crazy ideas not real solutions on the issues to be the blame.
We own ideas defacto we win.
Wow. That was a TERRIBLE ad. I know I’m not the demo, but really bad.
Of course there is always Grace & friends
Sure…what have you brewed nuero?
hey spocko — how ya doing tonight?
More Woodstock awesomeness.
aw double crap –i forking did it again
hey bb — how’s your bay tonight?
The Narrative is Blue Dogs not Lefties lost despite expected GOP targeting Lefties and Rahm backing the Blue Dogs with an army of cash.
Why they don’t have the people’s support on the issues.
If we divide the GOP and Tea Baggers they won’t win as many seats as expected. Why they talk crazy when people only want to hear about jobs and saving their home.
We can control the Narrative by distracting the GOP by forcing GOPers to declare for the Tea Baggers on issues that will cost them votes.
but one of my favs CSN the harmonies are just just amazing..
get caught up in the moment Suz?? congrads for 100!!
Damn! Really regretting being born in ’60 instead of ’50 or so…
Blue Dogs lost Ted’s seat because we stayed home I’m sure this election we can prove that wasn’t a fluke with a few more losses in purple districts 1-5% of us staying home is the margin of victory.
We are King Makers and Leg Breakers:)
I think that is an excellent question. The other day Suzie from Philly said something on Digby to the effect of “just goes to show how little influence we progressive bloggers have.”
When I listen to the right wing talk radio people talk about what they think we are doing and are wrong, but it is usually projecting what they are actually doing.
So. George Soros funds the left and runs it all! = The Koch Family and the Scaife’s and Moon actually fund the right.
1) Phreakin wow on The Ray. Epic. When playuh’s play and sangers sang, top shelf.
2) So What.
N then, you break out the seminal Miles N ‘Trane.
The people who push that agenda (which they pitch as: “the more democrats, the better”) are DLC Republicans, Rahm Emanuel being their poster boy. When he ran the DCCC, he’d get Republicans to switch parties to primary progressives. And he always insisted that he had to put the money where the Dems had the best chance of winning. Rahm tried to take credit for the Dem’s 2006 win, but in fact the people he backed fared poorly.
One way to discredit him is to check how the people he backed in 2006 and 2008, and the person who’d have all the details would be Howie Klein.
The second way to discredit him is to look at the people he backed and their stances on individual issues. They are not Dems!
hey larue – how’s sac tonight?
We have more support for issues like jobs, homes, ending the war, don’t cut Social Security our influence is the majority of voters on the important issues. We just got no juice in Washington:(
We will have lots more ammo on that after Rahm’s Blue Dogs start losing:) That and Rahm has no shot of being Mayor of Chicago.
Sorry I’m too buzzed to talk politics and heavy shit tonight — just feel like groovin’ to the tunes everyone is laying down :-) Peace! I’m on my days off and just want to chill…
Accepting the award of 100 on behalf of Suzanne is Spocko!
“I know that Suzanne is very modest and doesn’t like to admit she loves to win 100, but since she does such wonderful work and is a great welcoming host I’ll accept this award on her behalf. I’m sure that she would want me to thank Jane, Christy and all the founders of FireDogLake as well as the people behind the scenes who run the show day after day. And of course the LLNs, the marvelous crew whose fonts grace the screen every night.
I think you and Suzanne thanks you.”
of course there is always some tunes that don’t get a lot of attention.. Bert Sommer – “Jennifer”
dammit that’s forking funny dood — how can i be grumpy when i’m laughing :)
damn, that’s who I was trying to think of — thank you!
Nice sunset..warm sunny…campaigning for a really good Dem for state assembly Hilda Zacharias Harvard law degree, aally After yoga last night and spoke for homeless and an affordable Sewer project stimulus money wasted on porky project.
We’re losing a few blue dogs. Speaker Boehner isn’t something to celebrate. Keeping Pelosi would be better in my opinion.
It’d be really nice to put in a few non D or R’s… not happening this cycle, but eventually.
and what ever you do don’t forget Jerry
Well I’m no Sacheen Littlefeather, but I try
Mild, mid 80′s day, mid 50′s and GREAT sleeping weather with windows open.
Alas, up at 6am for jury duty at 8am.
May dawg help me behave decently in our county court house without disparaging authority and a broken legal system.
They make us take a Voir Dire Questionaire, and I think I know how to use THAT one to my benefit. And, if I DO get selected, econ hardship will have me out the door and home by 5pm at the latest, I do believe.
And then, it’s on with the hunt for gainful employment. Everyone wants me to sell, it seems. Even the staffing industry wants me, but to sell. Sigh. I just don’t DO sales for a living. Oh well . . . . life goes on, with or without me and my best wishes and intents. ;-)
Hitting the wall here all of a sudden — no surprise, since I’ve been up since 0445 EDT — thank you Suz, as always, g’night all!
Albert Einstein said that the epitome of crazy is doing the same thing and expecting something different to happen. Well, Barack Hussein Obama staffed up with refugees from the Clinton and Bush administrations and his economic team and continued their neoliberal policies claiming to expect something different to happen. That man’s one crazy MoFo.
After the election, organized labor should give him a safe way out: fire all Clintonites and Bushites on your economic team and every last imperialist in the DOJ. And show us some love. Then we’ll talk about 2012.
More betta blues.
Well time to toddle off into tomorrow…
nite pups great tunes tonight…
i’m not a sales kinda person myself either.
ooooh one of my favs…
Today I walked up in the woods for 3 hours. Boy are my dogs barking.
and my feet hurt too!
Never seen that, never heard of Bert. That was GREAT!
What a catch, thanks Nahant for sharing!
The Left Banke, Bert Was There
Ok, Bert was NOT there, but he WAS here:
Left Banke Wiki
I’m heading for bed too.
Good night all.
Really cool nice link to honor American native she said it well. RIP Brando
Really cool nice link to honor American native …
We have Columbus Day coming up in less than a month. I go out drinking with a couple of native American friends. We celebrate the discovery of white men in America, each in our own way, of course.
I used to listen to Spain over and over again in my early 20′s when I discovered it. I was hip to jazz in my teens, but, not so hot for Miles. And then . . . . Miles early and middle periods . . . wow. His heavier funk is kewl, but there’s some thing about him and his earlier lineups and that sound he gave us.
I gush, Miles.
Their first live album with Lovelight on it was the BOMB!
I actually got to see them with PigPen do it once, forget when or where, likely Winterland.
Great song. Nice pick, it rocks!
not so hot for Miles. And then . . . . Miles early and middle periods . . . wow.
Yup. There was a period where he got entirely too abstract for me. My musician friends loved that shit, but I never got it. Maybe it’s an acquired taste.
Today I thought about work and money a lot while walking.
That whole “who funds the right” issue was bugging me. Then I thought about how millions are raised by candidates for their stupid TV ads. The media are NEVER going to want that to go away. The people SELLING them on the media often get a cut (did you all know that?). Those people aren’t going to say, “We will get better bang for our buck by going to the people via Blogs, facebook, twitter” because there is no money there (for them).
I also thought about how I see a number some people talking about how sad it is that the DC power players just don’t get how to play to the progressive base. I think that part of it is that they see the progressive support as a gimmee but also they know that they can raise more money with “Corporate friendly” blue dogs candidates. This makes sense to me. Why try and milk 30,000 for $1,000 each when it is easier to milk 300 cows for 100,000. They see the new model of small number of people funding can only work for a “people’s” candidate and not all candidates have thousands of supporters, but they can usually find some rich people who will want to “get what they pay for.”
I used to listen to Spain over and over again in my early 20’s when I discovered it.
Is that the one where he does Concierto de Aranjuez ? Deadly stuff.
i think its sorta like our energy problems — everyone knows there is a better way but everyone is locked into the current system
That’s what I’m tawkin ’bout.
And with that nod to Suz once again, I gotta bail n face an ugly day tomorrow in the belly of ‘the man’ . . ;-)
Nite all, best to all, hug ‘em close.
Yep, I shoulda used the full name.
Sketches Of Spain
And now to the zzzzzzz.
I’ve been thinking about money. What the fuck is money, really? So I’ve come to a new way to think about it. Bear in mind that money is fungible. So my new view is this:
* The government pays its bills by printing dollars.
* They collect taxes in dollars (and destroy them) for one and only one reason: to make dollars valuable.
* They borrow dollars (and destroy them) to make them scarce and hence more valuable.
* The only reason to make dollars valuable is to control inflation, of which there isn’t any now and won’t be any so long as we have significant slack in our productive capacity, e.g., unemployment.
That was part of my thoughts. The main focus right now was on my own funding and how I’ve backed my way into a corner and how to get out.
I was thinking about my pitch to This American Life again and how it might not be the right fit, but if it was done right it could lead to something, my problem is that I can’t imagine that something good, only the bad.
Very interesting common sensible explanation.
HuffPo’s current headline:
GOP Bets All Its Chips On The Tea Party… Insurgents Crush Mainstream Opponents
The next time I hear the conservatives use the “The government budget is just like the family budget, when you spend too much you need to cut back.”
I’ll reply, ‘Exactly. We are just like the government! Why just yesterday I printed off $30,000 in new 100 dollar bills on my ink jet! Then sent some to my personal army which gets the majority of my money to defend against a neighbor who died back in the 1980s”
The Oligarchy is in command it appears. They have the jobs, the money and the power. How they chose to use it may be interesting since fear is there big play…maybe they are afraid to appear all powerful. They did crush the heart out of millions by devaluing their homes or taking them. A friend said tonight that most people are not concerned about the well being of other people.
al… sent to me by a lurker
Thanks BB. People don’t seem to realize that a government with soverign currency can never be insolvent so long as they have ink. They can always print more. And they can wipe out their loans by inflating the currency whenever it pleases them, but of course they’d have to pay a price in loss of credibility.
The point is not to inflate, and they know how to do that, tax, borrow, and raise interest rates and bank margins. But they have the opposite problem right now. We could easily enter a deflation spiral.
Back in 2004, Bernanke thought he knew how to handle that prospect: print money and helicopter-drop it all over the place. Hence his nickname: “Helicopter Ben.”
But he has tried that to the tune of two-trillion dollars, and it didn’t work. But he didn’t really drop it all over the place. Rather he loaned it to the banks at near-zero interest rates. But rather than using that money to stoke up the economy as he intended, they rented it back to the Treasury by buying bonds. Those boys ain’t no dummies; they know arbitrage when they see it.
So now they sit there, renting our money back to us, a perfect form of corporate welfare, waiting for that welfare to wipe out the red ink on their books.
To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there’s the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,…
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
Th’ oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,
The pangs of disprized love, the law’s delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th’ unworthy takes,
Hey, G’nite bb and everyone. I’m multitasking and will be dropping by now and then, for another hour or so.
’bout time for me to head out myself. g’nite and thank you for letting me hang out with ya tonight.
Is that friend a conservative? Is that friend currently in pain (financially, emotionally or physically?
If you have a tooth ache its hard to worry about others.
Many of us are very self centered. Children are often self centered, but not always, recent studies have shown empathetic acts in very young children when they see another child in pain.
Multiple years were spent by intellectual and spiritual priests trying to get me to be a man for others. It worked. Some (like your friend) would say it was a waste. Others that it worked too well. For how can you be a “man for others” if you can’t take care of yourself?” This was a conundrum posed by my father as I shipped off for a year of volunteer service with the poor and mentally ill.
“Well,” I said. ‘You were the one who sent me to those priests, I actually listened to what he and that guy Jesus had to say about caring for others. Imagine that. I actually acted on the good parts of the New Testament.
The pleasure was all ours.
In response to spocko @ 170 [oops!]
Good God! A Christian who follows the actual teachings of Christ. What a concept!
Yes. And it was really fraking hard. I was working with the people cast off by Reagan’s emptying of the state homes for the mentally ill into communities that were ill equipped to deal with them.
It changed the way I looked at the world and politics forever. Imagine trying to explain to someone who had multiple psychotic breaks that he is going to lose his social security too because they need to ensure that multimillionaires don’t pay a bit more in taxes.
That move by Reagan was IMHO a crime. What a prick!
Clinton and Bush wiped out retirement for the Baby-Boomer generation:
* their equity in real estate is gone
* their 401K’s are deflated
* their pensions are underfunded to the tune of trillions of dollars
And now Obama is coming for their Social Security.
Schmucks mit ohren!
Schmucks with ears?
~hits the brain bleach button, hard~
I got to see Jerry at the Keystone Palo Alto.. when it was still there on California st..
