Rick Perry, the secessionist candidate for Governor of Texas:
15% of voters in the state support seceding from the Union while 72% are opposed. 21% of Republicans and only 4% of Democrats support secession. Bill White actually leads the Governor’s race 51-42 with voters who want to be Americans, but Perry leads overall because of a 69-18 lead with the secessionists. It’s too bad for White that the secessionists don’t go so far as renouncing their right to vote in American elections or else he’d definitely be the next Governor of Texas.
Aside from wondering how many of those secessionists are sporting “America: Love It Or Leave It” bumperstickers on their trucks, I am once again amazed at how many people, especially Republicans, are just completely batshit insane.
Remember the Newsweek poll where 52% of Republicans said that it was at least probably true that “Barack Obama sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world,” and 59% said that he “favors the interests of Muslim Americans” over everyone else? Or the CNN poll where 41% of them said that Obama was probably or definitely not born in the US?
Makes me nostalgic for the good old days when Republicans just accused Democratic presidents of being homicidal swindling rapists. The GOP had integrity and self-restraint back then.

About Firedoglake
Good evening, Eli!
Evening, egreg!
You haven’t seen anything yet. Just wait until after Nov. when the GOP goes after Obama for being black. (me doing impersonation of Eddie Izzard pretending to eat popcorn)
I am too, and just commented about that in another thread. How can someone rooted in reality have a productive dialogue with folks that really are quite insane. And they CHOOSE to remain that way everytime they soak up the insanity from sources like the completely batshit crazy Glenn Beck.
They wouldn’t dare. It’s too… factual.
Sigh.
In a normal cycle, White really would have a chance. But I think the turnout will doom him.
God, I hate Goodhair.
I kinda have the same feeling about Sestak here.
Eli!
Maybe they want to leave America because they love it so much.
Jim!
Their PDAs were just becoming too embarrassing for everybody.
Perfectly OK with me if TX secedes. Well, except for my friend Julia. But she can come & live with me.
To secede or not to secede, that is the question.
For it is far better to have gone to war and lost than never to have gone to war at all (and get stuck with all those pretty bullets stored in your basement).
Today black presidents.
Tomorrow the world.
Oh, and all my TX friends on FDL. Not sure I have room for all of you, but I’ll see what I can do…
O claims he cut taxes for middle class, while mandating peeps spend money buying worthless medical “insurance.” Gah. The stoopid hurz.
Generous eChan generous.. How about refugees from California if e-meg and carly the death witch win??
Is there any way Texas could be returned to Mexico?
Hard not to wonder how things would have worked out had the South succeeded in seceding. The US would probably be a lot saner, but I wonder when the CSA would have gotten around to abolishing slavery and giving African-Americans the vote.
We can’t ALL fit in Portland.
Never. Crackers and Republicans in Dixie still resent the “coloreds” having the vote.
ARe you sure that Mexico wants it?
Well, I do have some acreage so a tent city is not out of the question.
I think they would have abolished slavery eventually. The vote, I’m not so sure about.
Looks more like U.S. is gonna do a military takeover of Mexico.
I used to wonder about that myself. I got quickly cured of that delusion when Blue Dogs gained ascendancy in the D party.
Well, there is an “insurgency” don’t you know? How long before the plutocrats decide it’s a threat to their way of life. Besides, that Mexican crude might come in handy some day. There are fortunes to be made.
Can anyone here even imagine how different the coverage of this would be if it were Democrats and liberals supporting secession? Because IMO it would be the top story daily, with R pols trying to outdo each other in ways to call them unpatriotic, treasonous, and probably somehow supporting teh terrists.
They already are…
but but I have kids/grand kid up dar in Portland Town… does that give a leg up senator??
Gotta be ‘fraid of those druggies. They are an existential threat to the U.S.
Funny thing is, the U.S., like many empires before it, will overextend, and then claim the last straw really was an existential threat.
Then the U.S. will go to war with Grenada.
Oh wait…
Any liberals that want to get out of Texas or any other God forsaken redneck utopia can relocate to Motown. Housing prices are low and the city is not what the national media would have you believe.
But remember until the mid 70′s all those repugs were dems.
LOL!!!
Camping in upstate NY in the WINTER… not for this old fart… I would be gone in days to the DFH heaven in the sky… give me an F..
Give me a U..
Give Me a C..
Well you know the rest… happened just down the pike from you..
They are all racists first and foremost, regardless of whatever letter they chose to put after their name.
What’s with what I hear about the mayor closing or privatizing everything.
I never promised you a rose garden. *g*
Bipartisan in their bigotry.
Goes further back. Think Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats. Nixon just capitalized on the inherent racism that dominates in the South.
Too bad the Federeal government supplied so much money to Texas over the last couple of years as that covered Goodhair’s ass.
They say first as tragedy, then as farce. Seems U.S. policy hopeless mixes up both at all times in all places.
The last Mayor, a corrupt son of a corrupt Congresswoman, bankrupted the city. In a way, what happened to Detroit is a microcosm of what is happening to the U.S.. The political mobsters are “busting out, the city and/or the country.
For those paying attention. They count on most people not paying attention and/or having very short memories.
Been reading some of your preps for winter… canning and so forth… you go girl keep that wonderful place going as environmentally as you can.. love that you are using the dead trees on your property… just about carbon neutral..
We burn old culled almond wood for heating… works great… stay close to the land..
Aloha, Eli…!
Let ‘em secede… As long as we can keep Austin…! ;-)
Aloha, CTut…!
I wonder how much it would cost to put the city on wheels…
HOLA H’ELI!
In some ways Detroit, not unlike New Orleans, is the perfect example of failed urban policy. What advanced nation would just turn their backs on their cities? Detroit is becoming a “laboratory” of sorts on reinventing urban America. Many great ideas and dedicated and committed citizens but not enough money.
HOLA, uh, H’SADLY!
They say every stick of wood warms you X-times (I forget what X is supposed to be but every time I restack wood I try to count up and it turns out to be an implausibly high number.) Not sure it’s environmentally friendly to burn wood, but if ya got it, burn it…
And then there’s Colorado Springs, the poster child for what I call “Bathtub America”…
Get Perry to talk about immigration. Either he pisses of the Mexican vote and makes us comr out on election day or he losses the Chuck Norris vote. Either way we win do it on a tv debate.
Don’t get me going about them.
I do think they’re nervous in the Springs, looking at the Boulder 4 Mile Canyon Fire.
Colorado Springs is the perfect example of the “me” society vs. the “we” society. The redneck utopia of the Rockies.
U.S. turned its back wholesale on its cities when interstate highways were built to take people away from them. In retrospect, there’s never been anything like it in any other place at any other time. (Not that I know history that well, so I’m ready to be schooled.) Could be a metaphor for the U.S. general principle of shitting on people who don’t count. After all, it is the cities that have poor (didn’t need to ignore the rural poor as they were/are always out of sight); the rich have their estates and gated suburban communities.
Lets see if I remember
wood warms ya 3 times
once when you cut it down
once when you split and stack it
and once when you burn it…
shit dam good source of heat if ya ask me…
been there done that lived in in southern Maine for 6 years….. six cord a year to stay warm.. boy I don’t miss those days…
Um, no, that would be Wyoming.
Been turning CO Blue for a while now. In fact CO is a net exporter of Fed tax funds versus receiving Fed tax funds.
eCHAN Brain Bleach alert
I saw some bees I think they were bees swarming on either a spilled energy drink, pee or vomit a few days ago would bees be attracted to diabetic pee?
Or the sugar of an energy drink? Booze and sugar are chemically almost the same would they be attracted to vomit?
Gross question but I was worried about the bees. I’m not sure whats worse for them an energy drink, pee or vomit.
They prayed themselves to prosperity in Colo Spgs (I think that’s how the highway signs designated last time I was there, a long time ago).
Particularly, when you consider that black soldiers were not allowed to take out GI mortgages. No mortgage-no white picket fence house in suburbia.
thats about the size of it…..i was thinking how Europeans love to beautify….merkins not so much
that sux, sounds like a law suit to me
When did that end my dad was drafted for the Korean war he never got or maybe never applied for help with college.
I got a survey phone call that I listened to…could not tell who the sponsor would have been. But the greatest # of questions focused on tax issues and immigration with alittle education on the side. I hung on for some reason and then got really curious about who was gathering the info.
Texas I heard can’t find the link has very liberal Oxy laws like Floridia is that an issue this election?
I am not sure, perhaps with Vietnam. I saw a special on it recently about Richmond, CA where the shipyards were. The reason Richmond is mostly black is cause everyone else left to go buy houses.
Off topic but Judge Virginia Phillips in her ruling against DADT noted that a whole lot of service members are allowed to serve in combat while their investigations are put on hold only to be thrown out immediately upon returning. The same thing happened in my case. Dig this:
I was told I was being put out within 90 days. Around two months later, my unit was going to go out for nine days worth of workups. Since I was the only person currently fully qualified in the airframes shop, they sent me too, (though I was too evil to stay in and keep my benefits). We went out and during that time Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and the ship along with the air wing on board was ordered to the Persian Gulf. Several days later, those of us who for one reason or another were on their way out got orders extending us for the duration of the mission.
101 days later, I got orders and was flown off the boat. I went to Riyadh, Ramstein, Lakehurst, New Orleans, Nellis, Coronado and finally NAS Miramar. When I hit the ground I signed out and started on my already approved leave and went home. The next morning I was woken up by the phone and ordered back to duty. Six hours later, I had been stripped of two pay grades, all of my benefits, even the money I had paid in to continue my education. This took place less than 24 hours after almost 36 hours of traveling.
That was prior to DADT but apparently they are still doing the same kind of thing.
How were the questions slanted could the Dems be getting a brain? I thought Perry was staying away from immigration so far.
Or is Perry preparing to come Out as a Bigot?
Turning it Blue or turning it Blue Dog?
But your calculation misses how many times it is restacked. For me, once when it is cut down, again when it is split, then again when it is restacked, then I move each piece from one woodbin to another, then to my back porch, then into the house. So you can see, every piece of wood is lifted & carted somewhere at least 6 times. Seems insane when you count it up, which is why I don’t. (Same reason I’ve never added up how much money I’ve spent on house restoration and property maintenance. Both are completely insane, but in an esthetic kinda way, not in a wingnut way, LOL.)
Didn’t know that. After WWII, blacks couldn’t get GI mortgages? Wow!
OT, this if for you eCHAN, this week on the Diane Rheam show on NPR she interviewed a woman who just wrote a book on honey. Don’t remember her name but it was fascinating. She said the honey of Yemen is especially good.
(((((Margarett)))) And Thank You for your Service.
Crap I was friends with to Lesbians who met serving in Gulf war 1 a black and white couple I saved the blond from a giant frat boy and almost got my head torn off.
In return she always bought me a pitcher of beer when I went to the bar. I wonder what happened to her.
She was great to talk to about girl problems.
Why?
Not only that. European cities are gorgeous, but so is European countryside. Gradually accumulating roadside Murka syndrome (thanks Nabokov) but still has beautiful countryside not sullied by strip mauls and McMansions.
What?
Only if it has a price tag on it.
Spread a rumor that Goodhair doesn’t mention immigration because he wants to be elected but after the election he will make his Tea Bagger supporters real happy.
Force the Punk to deny it!
Why is the honey so good is it the plants they eat, the climate, I’m just curious.
I’ll have to check out Yemen honey to see why. Thanks for the heads up. I had a Moroccan taxi driver once who swore by Moroccan honey. Forget the nectar it came from. I learned just this week that the girls segregate the honey in the hexagons by the flowers it comes from. Some schmart cookies, those bee gurlz.
There’s still a decent chance to defeat Goodhair or would be if the Harris County Republican party hadn’t torched the voting machines. They’re going to have to make some kind of accommodations for that and I’m hoping it motivates the voters in Harris County to come out and vote.
One of the immigration ? was a pretty straight forward what do you prefer…sort of thing. Like punishment etc for those here illegally or a path to citizenship? What impressed me was the way the taxes and immigration themes emerged….
people plant flowers, whether its their property or not, my neighbors would rather eat, them than share them
yup, there is little sense of community
sheesh girl you do a lot of moving the wood… we get it delivered to the drive way and then stack in the back yard.. We also keep a nice stack just outside the sliding door closest to the stove…
Remember bat shit insane Marylin Musgrave? Replaced by a Blue Dog, Betsy Markey.
Jared Polis? Gay rep in Boulder.
So it’s a little of both. You don’t get from Alabama to San Francisco in 10 years.
The proudest thing my grandaunt who grew up in Texas was about my Dad was he went on a job and ordered the rednecks around. Not my Dad getting a college degree, not the clothes or car.
What ever those jerks did to her I’m sure plenty other Mexicans got similar stories paint Perry as bringing the old days back.
Do that and we can raise Levithan.
the word honeymoon is Arabic………….Basra, and most Iraqi cities famous for it…tales of the Araibian Nights…………so much culture demolished sigh
If we find out who did the poll Dems or Perry we know the future.
Keep workin it Kelly.
only thing I can say is FUCK… That is so wrong at so many levels…
I served Peg and no one who has served deserves to be treated that way no one… ☺ ☺ ☺
I hear a story once as a kid a rabbi asked God that he may live to see the Messiah before he died. I asked God to see my people respected before I die.
ELI!
Isn’t your case part of the plan? To strip as many who have served as much as possible of the benefits they have allegedly been promised? (Sorry to be cynical about your personal case but it seems so representative.)
My cleaning lady is a LPN at a hospice unit at a V.A. facility as her full time job. WWII vets just about dead & gone & more & more VN vets in her unit. She just got free of her dysfunctional home situation after the 20+ years I’ve known her, and today she took me to see her little cottage where she now lives in peace all by her lonesome, a dream of hers for a long time. On the way there & back she told me stories of VN vets under her care, Agent Orange problems, daughters with birth defects, etc. She is on a committee to spot vets with stories to tell to refer to a person who does oral histories. Blessings on the project.
Coming to think of it, you should write your own oral history on your own computer, then look for some one who is collecting them. Won’t help you in your lifetime, but oral histories are just coming into their own, and hopefully will have much more influence in the future than official histories have had.
Why is there no redress? Seems like losing all those benefits = a “taking” with no sort of due process. Or does the military thing make that OK?
Agreed we should push for all Gays kicked out to get their benefits back! Fracking Scrotmunchers!
Apparently it’s a particular tree in Yemen that the bees feed on. I can’t remember the name of it but I’m sure the Diane Reahm website has some info, at least the name of the author and her book. Apparently the bees of Yemen are small and somewhat docile. Here’s a link.
http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2010-09-08/grace-pundyk-honey-trail
My friend Julia is working hard on this problem.
Any stories of Gulf War 1 syndrome?
We need a study of the tree good honey indicates good health and our bees are dying. Heck we need to import that tree.
TEDDY!
i shall go look,thanks
I have sooo many dead trez on my property. It’s hard to ‘splain why I find these so unpleasant to look at. Maybe it’s my own personal version of insanity: moving wood over & over again & thinking it will make difference. LOL.
si…and the CARING!!! that goes with it!
None that she’s told me. I’ll ask her. Thanks for reminding me. I suspect she won’t know becuz she’s on a hospice (making comfortable when death is near) unit. But perhaps she’s heard stories.
i’ll get me some skates. but of course, y’all know, austin’s not really in texas.
Your Spanish?
Bingo….that’s what I do with paper(s)….as in why I can’t get it all out of my house. Yikes.
Thanks :)
Do you have any ash trees on your property? In Michigan ash trees have been wiped out by the emerald ash borer, an invasive species (from China no less) that came in through the port of Detroit. All ash trees in Michigan are either dead or will die. Devastating!
I would agree with you.. And unfortunately I don’t have an answer to it… maybe find some lawyer who concentrates on just these issue.. especially in Margarets case.. just some fucking uptight military dickhead being just fucking mean giving in to His own personal insecurities…
no,my housekeeper was here today ,so im in Spanish mode…i adore her Rosalito, she puts me in the best mood, always
survivor you are just a survivor..
Wouldn’t that be great…I have seen some long drawn out fights over the agent orange injury with successful outcome. Like you say…someone to keep after it.
same thing with the Traumatic Brain Syndrome and Purple Hearts
Get a room!
Agent Orange, isn’t that John Boehner?
I suffer from that insanity too. My late husband died in 1987. He was OCD about several biz problems, and I kept his files on those until last year when I finally torched them on my burn pile. Geez, I should really get a life. I have files from Goldman Sachs going back to 1976, when they hired me, when there were 24 professional women on staff, mostly librarians. I should burn those too.
I’m sorry. That is a sad story on how we honor people’s service. But let me say thank you. You deserved much better. It should not have happened at all.
Do you think Holder will appeal the decision? Maybe he should just sit on it. I like to see McCain stew a little.
rotfl
Ho, ho; my cat is wondering why Im L’ingOL. Great.
Ash trees here hanging in. I have a lot of them. Keep your damn ass (sic) borer to yurselves!
My mom is Rosario the o ending is weird for girl names in Spanish but my mom is well more aggressive than me her name fits. Her nickname which I have no hope of spelling is the spiny fruit of the cactus you must boil before eating.
Never knew you were a she. Stupid me.
Let them flirt :)
So tell us, Eli, when exactly did the repugs practice intergriy and self restraint? Geez, all I can remember is the lies and innuendo they deal in. Maybe there was a time, back when Rockefeller or Javits were around? Nah.
“…relocate to Motown.”
One of the attractions of moving to TX in the first place was escaping winter weather. Besides there are no redfish or speckled trout in Michigan.
TX will be a solid purple by 2016 and maybe sooner if the anti immigration rhetoric heats up. The governors race could be the surprise upset of season.
We could have a ritual burning of the Goldman Sachs holy files. I wonder if the media would cover it.
Maybe write a few diaries with that material.
Our Vets suffer from the Republican mantra of “Use them and lose them”
Benefits?? Fuck off we paid you a salary you asses… shit do ya want tomess up the tax breaks for the rich??
Hey Vets just suck it up and DIE!!
SOON..
.
.
.
..
/s
Um, you might want to re-read that last paragraph…
Man, be still my heart…wouldn’t that kind of upset just make the earth move….what fun. I heard some polls were up for White, but then there was some explanation about the time period that caused a weaker interpretation. We’ll see.;)
Had two job offers in 1974. One in Santa Monica; the other in DC. Picked the wrong one. LOL
I thought he was the Great Pumpkin. Halloween is a-comin’.
The Governors race a surprise that would scare the GOP 6 ways to sunday they can’t win the Presidency without Texas. Heck if its even close expect panic mode beyond what we have ever seen.
Why Florida might still be purple.
I considered going to Cornell for the weather.
But that was all in jest, wasn’t it?
From Alaska?
Have you been in a VA lately?
Belch and I took his Dad last week, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of wingnut propaganda in the waiting rooms for the various clinics.
I snagged an Americans For Prosperity piece, and brought it home, but didn’t scan it soon enough for belch’s taste; pop, into the garbage.
But next time we go I’ll snag several of the pieces. It’s astounding. They’re actually soliciting the Vet’s help to undermine their own interests.
I can’t believe it’s legal. But it is.
Now that’s an idea. We could do dances & everything!
Well, yeah.
Time to put up our own fliers? Maybe the Vets here could help put them up and write them?
I just like having seasons. And snow. I like snow.
Would’ve been nice to get the occasional Giants game on teevee, too…
No reason for you to know from my screen name. One of the nice things about toobz is that, should you choose a screen name, you can choose to be gender neutral. As I have never been typical female, works for me.
Snark
Didn’t mean to be intrusive.
I lived upstate there. I hate snow. And ice too. and 20 below mornings too.
People don’t think smart or aggressive are female and if I did not know you I might make the same mistake. I think nobody realizes I’m Mexican till I say something a bit off balance yes but brown nooo!
Well, I’m out of here comrades. Off to the farmers market in the a.m. then a visit to mom. Take care one and all.
It’s possible Cornell or, say, Minnesota might have ended up being a bit much. But four years in California with no snow at all kind of sucked. I was so happy to be back in NYC for the winter that I’d just walk around with my coat open, enjoying the cold.
Also an idea. I’ll consider it. My old files are prolly more diary worthy, only in the sense of gender treatment in the day. My late husband’s issues had to do with how potential legal liabilities were treated during the consolidation phase of the late 70s-early 80s. Interesting for those who were into the weeds in those days but not of much historic significance.
I always found that one’s attitude toward snow depended on whom you were with.
And your other choice was????
My HS classmates who went to Cornell (3 or 4) just loved it.
http://www.truth-out.org/why-millions-march-france-but-…
Hmmmm. A bunch of women dancing around a burning fire. Media would start covering it about the time the witch trials started.
Last Tuesday and yes there is crap there but there are many of the staff that want to help & take care of all Vets.. at lest that is what I find.. oh and yes there are those staff who are just getting a paycheck.. but in my experience, 8 yrs, overall they care about you.. just saying..
Good idea – Jane should actually put up print ready art for Just Say Now that you could download at the JustSayNow.com site, considering how many Viet Nam era peeps are at the VA these days.
That propaganda would be WAY more popular than AFP bullshit! Heh.
I would leave tons of it all over the place besides the VA….
ha!
nite bluetoe,im headin out too…nytol
Wasn’t talking about the staff. Not at all! My lesbian neighbor is an OR nurse at the VA, and I’m hip with the staff.
Just about the propaganda. Yikes.
I was a little further up from Albany. But skiing – a lot of people were really into that. I remember the cars going up on a Friday evening. I remember ice skating one night in Schenectady. I really thought I would freakin freeze to death. But, hey, the family loved it.
That’s the funny thing – I don’t like *any* winter sports, unless you count football. I just like winter.
The clinic manager of urology at Wilford Hall is as liberal as I am, as is the chief physician. They won’t allow wingnut materials and Danny has programmed the televisions in the waiting area and the lounge to skip past FOX “News”. Some of the more wingnutty vets don’t like it but you’d be amazed how many of them express gratitude for not having to put up with FOX while waiting to see the doctors.
ohtay… all of our Vets should get first class services… after all they put the lives on the line even if they didn’t see combat, they still served our country!
Same with me. I can’t ski for shit, and you can’t tell that I have the gay gene on skates. I’m ridiculous at that stuff as much as belch is awesome at it.
But we both LOVE winter. I bitch about it in late March and April, but I love it until then.
*heh* The main difference between Liberals and Conservatives…! ;-)
Goody goody! faux news is not news
eCHAN sure it is nothing has changed I just worked for 2 months on a farm the racist boss gave me at 41 all the hard jobs I went from 240 to 205 pounds. When I needed help he sent a college girl the White guys however were protected from hard work. ( I wonder if they got a sexual harassment suit? )
I brought this up to my co workers and the white girl was real uncomfortable even talking about the subject. (Opression starts in the mind when you can’t even ask questions)
So I left and I’m sure she got all the hard jobs when I was gone.
The White Guys well I told her in my day we gave the girls the easy jobs I stopped complaining because I don’t want to see you suffer like I do.
Her response well in your day but it hasn’t been like that in 3 years (she has worked there 3 years)
I do not know if her response is typical but if it is then Feminism for working women at least in the Bush/Obama economy has stepped back pre 80′s.
You weren’t. Just ‘splaining why it’s sometime fun to be gender neutral in ereality, rather than gender neutral in actual reality.
This is obviously a subject to which I’ve given a lot of thought and have strong opinions. Still, I’m interested in new impressions on it, as mine are so rooted (or root-bound?) in history. And, as all the opportunities I’ve missed (that’s the BIG story from the files in my attic) becuz of gender are so far in the past, I have a partially distant impartial view.
One story I’ve told here before. Year was prolly late 90s, Female DR of of Mitchell Hitchens was speaking before Financial Women’s Assn. I invited salesman who covered the large account, who appropriately responded he would attend. Breakfast meeting at top of Paine Webber tower on 6th Ave, so we were to meet up there. He was (is?) a softig ruddy complected male, about 15-20 years my junior so about 40ish at the time. When we hooked up he was beet red and said: I must be the only man (among perhaps 100) in the room. I replied: Now you know what it’s been like to be the only woman in the room for decades.
I didn’t mean it, in the sense that I never felt uncomfortable being the only woman in the room, but thought I’d raise his consciousness by pointing out the females’ POV.
We need Nahant, Norske, Southern Dragon and Raven to name a few on this Vets need to write come up with the ideas.
We need realism not emotional propaganda on this.
Does fighting with a flap/slat control drive sequencer count as combat? It should!
You know what they’re doing to belch’s Dad? Since he’s a Korea era vet, and his conditions aren’t combat related, he’s being means-tested.
So for the past years services, we are going to get some unknown giant bill. Just found that out Tuesday.
The sucky thing is that he only got over the $30k per year income limit because he cashed out a piece of an IRA for $15k to buy a replacement vehicle. Otherwise he’d be at $18k per year income.
They’re counting that IRA draw as income, despite the fact it was solely for a vehicle purchase.
It’s maddening.
Group Identity your not one of them where you always outside the group?
Ok Diary and I hope Jane front pages it!
As a manager who leans heavily toward hiring women, I’ve been in his position often and it is eyeopening — to say the least.
Bureaucracy in motion is bureaucracy at rest.
I bought a pointy hat last Halloween.
I never sdaid I saw combat and I am very thankful that I did not, but I still gave Unce Sam 3 years of my life… I wonder just how many on the right Even served at all? And they want to make War at the Gi’s expense… fuck make them serve in the trenches… chicken shits when it is their skin on the line…. “Oh We are above all that”
Five years and five months…all stolen away.
Fuck. I can’t think of anything else to say, sorry.
OK. Becoming completely incoherent, owing to tiredness not drunkedness, so am bugging out. Sleep well all.
Ain’t it?
And do you find it strange that now, as people are being as outrageously and shabbily treated as you and I were the whole time by our orientations, people are really REALLY waking up to how shitty things are?
Cripes, VA benefits are SHIT! They need to be far better than they are, and Medicaid/SocSec? Poverty as constructed.
So when ANYBODY says to me “everything’s gotta be on the table” I go apeshit.
Margaret my friend please Diary Facebook, Tweet, Stumble upon, Digg etc and keep it up write several articles one hit wonders are ignored.
All this means testing was instituted by the Pukes( did I say USE Them them lose them?) They now consider 11 K a year to qualify you to pay co-payments on your Meds.. 11K are you fucking kidding me??? We owe Vets what little freedom we still have… the least we should do is take care of them when they need medical treatment/Meds without bankrupting them… or at least asking them to balance their Meds or food or what have you… Fucking TIGHTWAD PUKES… Always have been always be!
Nite and who cares if you drink:)
*going upstairs*
Does suck Peg does Suck the big one… All for one homophobic asshole who is still wondering about His own sexuality..
Talk to the vets get them to do a series of posts. I’m not up in the mornings much anymore haven’t seen Raven in months Norske like twice SD and you are the only out ones I see.
I live in the Springs, or rather tolerate living in the Springs. I really enjoy winter too, but we’ve been getting less and less snow each year. Of the 10 driest winters on record, 9 have occurred since 2000 for us, Denver may be a little different. The NWS website has all the data.
But we used to get at least a light dusting in September, and the real heavy stuff in March and April. I’m afraid that the drier winters are here to stay.
Sides Norske and Raven while they will listen to me I can’t make them do anything I figure you got more pull:)
Cripes I can’t make them do anything but agree with me when I support them and its lucky for me we agree:)
Fuck compromise when wisdom’s in the house.
Kelly wants me to write about this on this forum but when I write it out and put everything up front, people start treating me differently. Suddenly people don’t even seem to know which gender to call me. They start using “Ms. Peg” and so forth like I’m some kind of conditional woman or woman with an asterisk. I’m not sure I want to go through all of that again.
Welcome to the new normal
I don’t know why you would call it “batshit insane” for Republicans to support nullification, including its extreme application, secession.
Nullification is right there in the Constitution, in the 2d and 10th Amendment and Art IV, sec 4. It’s clearly the original intention of the Founders, since they handled the Alien and Sedition Act crisis, and the Tariff of Abominations crisis, by nullification, followed by both sides jockeying with the threat of armed force to get their way. Nobody thought of appealing to the courts to settle the issue, because the 10th was accepted by all parties to mean that the federal courts have no jurisdiction, they’re part of the federal govt against which the states have the right to assert their interpretation that the Constitution does not permit whatever federal action they object to. Once that assertion is made, that state and the US are like two sovereign countries, with each free to use diplomacy, which, as between any two sovereign nations, boils down to what they can credibly threaten to do if it should come to war. Andrew Jackson did’t turn to the Supreme Court to get them to issue an injunction against South Carolina, he asked Congress for a Force Bill, the authorization to raise an army and go to war with South Carolina and its militia. The matter was settled at the negotioating table before it came to that, with the final agreement being that SC would repeal its Act of Nullification, but Congress would pass a very different, much more acceptable, tariff.
The Civil War did not, could not, change that situation at all, any more than an armed band that took over DC for a day could change the Constitution. You can only change the Constitution by amending it, as the document itself prescribes. The folks who won the Civil War could have, quite clearly should have, used the opportunity to get rid of the doors to disunion written into the founding document. They should have amended the Constitution to get rid of the 2d and 10th, and Art IV, sec 4. But, in their arrogance and inability to imagine that secession would ever be tried again, and their unwillingness to admit that the Southern states had a right to secede, however foolish to exercise it in any but the most dire circumstances, however criminal to exercise it to defend slavery — they failed to amend the Constitution so as to close the doors to disunion.
That failure hasn’t mattered during the long years and decades since the Civil War, because since then we have had a gross imbalance of military forces. Several Southern states tried nullification at various stages of desegregation, but the outcome was always that the president would send in the US Marshals, or the 82d Abn, and that pro forma show of force would end the matter, as the governor would stand aside from the doorway to the school, or whatever histrionic scene they had devised to enact the continued Martyrdom of the South. But those shows of force also proved nothing except that in such showdowns, the side with the most guns wins.
Is our side, is the Union, going to have the most guns the next time the other side tries this? Sure about that? Ever hear of the Oathkeepers? Sure, the US Army has all the guns, compared to 1861, their position vis a vis the state militias is incomparably greater. But would the current US Army hold together, and obey the president in such a showdown? Would the Congress, specifically the Congress that is seated in 2011, support the president?
Let’s say VA takes their Act of Nullification of the ACA all the way to the end of the line. The federal courts, as expected rule against the Cuccinelli lawsuit. There are enough Federalist Society stooges on the federal bench that I wouldn’t be sure of that result. Maybe they would rule that the mandate, and God knows what else the federal govt has been doing for generations, is an unconstitutional overreach. Even worse, maybe they refuse to resolve the issue, and declare that this is just like 1799 or 1831, and this is not a matter for the federal courts, that VA and the US need to settle this between them as they both see fit, negotiations, pistols at ten paces, whatever.
Assume instead the best case for the Union, that the federal courts simply say that the ACA is constitutional, and toss out Cuccinelli’s suit. But then the governor and AG of VA announce that that’s to be expected, but the 10th still means that VA gets to “rein in” (Cuccinelli’s exact words) the federal govt, so the nullification stands until VA, not SCOTUS, says that the mandate is constitutional. VA law enforcement will block any attempts to enforce the mandate. Does Obama send in the marshals, the Army? If he does, do they obey? Even if they do, initially, what if the govt of VA, instead of some meaningless gesture of standing down after the federal show of force, engages in continuing passive resitance? Do federal troops keep up an occupation, do they run VA govt to ensure compliance with setting up the exchanges? How long would VA keep that up? Why would they quit? How long will the Congress support the occupation, how long will the troops be willing to continue an occupation of VA?
Wouldn’t Obama just call the whole thing off? Not send in the troops, but negotiate instead. Pull a John Adams and do nothing in the face of nullification, instead of a Lincoln. Of course, he’s dead, politically, if he does that, and the Union as well. No red state will ever again accept losing on any issue at the federal level. They’ll just assert their 10th Amendment powers and dare the federal govt to make them comply. I don’t think that the Jackson option would be practicable, in that I can’t see Congress passing a Force Bill, and people would not understand negotiating with VA as anything but capitulation. Meanwhile, if they ever control the federal govt, they will be ruthless in putting down any challenge to the Supremacy Clause. They will react like Lincoln, our side like Buchannon or Adams.
What’s batshit insane about wanting to live in that world, I mean if you’re a Republican? That world, the world of 1799 and 1831, sounds like something the Republicans would like, not anything the least bit insane. Sure, they are far from certain of getting to that world from 2010. A lot could go wrong for them in the above scenario. But, at the very least, I think that people on our side need to acknowledge that all this talk of theirs of interposition and nullification and states’ right, and even secession, is not lone gunman crazy talk. It’s how the Union used to manage, after a fashion. It’s how the rules still say that states have every right to insist it should once again manage. (Well, every right that they can vindicate by force of arms.) It’s a way of managing this counry’s affairs that would be of much greater benefit to their side than the present arrangement. It’s hardly bastshit insane of them to work towards the day when nullification is once again as accepted as church on Sunday.
You are always Margaret. You always were Margaret. You will always be Margaret.
You are especially Peg to me! And so special to my heart and my thoughts.
I’ve told you before and I’ll say it again, you are one of the bravest people that I know, period.
It ends up being sucky but true that marginalized people need to keep at it to get within the margins. It’s true from a gender, orientation or even a political point of view.
Look what Jane goes through with such vilification for pointing out the obvious.
I totally get your vulnerability, as things are not good for you right now. I just call you on your inner strength, Peg. You have it.
I just love you to pieces, ’cause my full voiced Peg is the bestest Peg I know.
Well, you’d never treat me any differently of course. :)
nor would i margaret. as kelly said, you are, have been, and will always be margaret
when you are ready to write one, i would love to read your diary but if you choose not to, that’s ok too. totally your choice hon.
Suz
I know you are right on with Margaret (Peg) and not just Mz Peg… she is who she is period!!
I live in Texas and get a chance to vote against Mr. Good Hair. The group that wants to leave is stupid. Everyone knows the Senate does not move quickly but if TX wanted to leave it would take them six minutes to approve it. Two minutes for each senator for TX to speak and two minutes for the approval. Then it would take 9 months to see who gets all of the Gov stuff in TX. CA and Ky would fight over Ft. Hood. NM and OK would fight over the Dallas FED. And WA would get the Ft Sam medical facility but would have to take the Pantex plant in the pan handle along with the nuclear storage facility. There wouldn’t be a national guard cause they would leave to neighboring states to finish their tours. The would not have an illegal immigration problem cause they would not want to come to another third world country. These guys just don’t think past their belt buckle.
“I am once again amazed at how many people, especially Republicans, are just completely batshit [criminally] insane.”
Why “once again”? They aren’t getting treatment; they are re-indoctrinated daily by secular and/or religious revival.
I wish they would secede (except for Austin). Then we would be free of that odious Texas Board of Education and their efforts to rewrite history and do away with science and math.
