Hi, y’all. Reading the thread – went searching the teevee “24-hr news channels” for live coverage of the disaster near SF – just proved that not one of them is really a “news” channel. Not a single one, MSNBC, CNN, HLN, FOX, nor even ABC which happens to have Nightline on (is it live?) has a thing about it. All continuing with their usual shows, even the repeats like Tweety and Larry King.

Sigh. All about the entertainment. No real news at all. The NYT website does have it, with photo. What will we do when the Times finally gives up?

Oh, credit where due – ABC just put up an “update” on the fire, so I presume they had covered it earlier.

The abuse of “national security” in order to get your way is precisely what I’m against. “National security” has been abused in order to prevent freedom of information and prevent lawsuits against the government and now it is being used to prevent individuals from engaging in their own free speech. If someone wants to burn books by all means they should be able to in order to exercise their Constitional rights, just as by all means anyone who wants to oppose such an action should be able to in order to exercise their Constitional rights. I was also appalled that the Park51 head used the same “national security” line in order to try and get his way. Going down this “national security” path for civilian domestic matters is a very dangerous path to take that will only result in our rights being further eroded away.

Gail Collins of the NY Times pointed, very correctly, on the Rachel Maddow show last night that we should not forget that 5% of the people in this country are CRAZY. The good Reverend Jones should be counted in that percentage.
