Late, Late Night FDL: Losing My Religion |

R.E.M. is one of my favorite groups…! What’s on your mind tonite…?
Definitely a great band, and yes, one of MY fav songs of all time.
Nice pick, hoss.
Tuttle!
Congrats, Larue…! It is a great tune, eh…?
Truly excellent live act. Just the music, and that’s a lot.
I lost my religion when I was 16 and found myself in a Catholic church in New Orleans in maybe 1962 or so. Blacks were able, blessedly — I suppose, to attend the Catholic church as long as they sat on the outside aisles. Better than in my town of Houston, but not meeting my definition of churchiness. It ended for me that day. I’ve played the game on and off since then, but I have never believed, as it were.
Warner Bros has disabled 99% of all their stuff…! Thank god the Canucks foiled ‘em…! ;-)
It’s tempting to say that I fought my way out of the Lutheran church with all my might after my 18th birthday…
But it was truly the milquetoast offshoot of the Lutherans, and not the evangelical nutjob variant.
If Jesus was an advocate of having blacks sit on the outside aisles, then I just didn’t have enough Jesus-i-ness in me to keep on singing. If the Catholics couldn’t step up, who in the hell could?
CT…evening to ya and the rest of the fine Lake pups…
Great vid choice…one of my favs as well!
I feel like I haven’t lived in the real world for years.
I was a so-called dyed in the wool Lutheran of the Missouri Synod type, even an acolyte for many years…then I discovered dating and the girls…I quickly became one of those evil ‘secular’ kids with adventures to experience…
The magic show had no sway over me anymore until I revisited the study of religions in my 20′s and 30′s….
Hey, Bud, you’re in it with the rest of us who are fighting for some kiind of sanity. None of us can do it alone….. that’s for sure. Which is why FDL is such a home away from home. Love it.,……
The real good ethics of Catholics can be very powerful.
The social justice works of the Church are the kind of things that Glenn Beck hates are what attracts me to them.
I’m in the buckle of the Ohio bible belt, and I feel the same way.
Aloha, Margot, ed, Dearie and Spocko…!
I did plan on doing a ‘best cover song’ ever, post… However, my connection speed has dropped dramatically so I went with a single tune…! My apologies…!
Oh YEAH it’s a great tune.
*G*
I had my dobro out.
Seems this one is out of C, G and such.
Dang, outside of festing, camp jamming and such, this one lit me up.
*G*
Nice, hoss, n thanks!
*G*
*clinks elbows with edve*
They were really decent folks, all of them, except this one woman who converted from Catholic to marry a parishioner. She was not my favorite. She had the evil-eye thing down like a champ.
Hey, CT, hope you are seeing some bright night stars……here in south central California we’ve been socked in with fog for weeks and weeks, but I got a starry night last night up in Santa Barbara while babysitting two adorable grandbabies. Milky Way and all.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOES ON AND ON AND…
Citizen CTuttle and the Firepup Freedom Fighters (AND the wannabees):
Great choice Brother CT have a cousin who, along with 3 of his 4 sisters, was serially abused by Father Porter and is still in the Church…goes without sayin that he doesn’t listen to much music.
Gotta go ta bed…takin the Grandkids again tamorrow…keep the red flags flyin you old low-quarter.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE FUCKIN AMMUNITION AND FOR GOD’S SAKE DON’T SHOOT THE FRIENDLIES!!
I think that regardless of the institution or religious group, there lies within people whose expression of good will and compassion, as well as kindness and care, may be dressed in words of religion, but the core of their actions pays testament to their inherent humanity.
Hey, Larue, I’ve been doing “imagine fest” all weekend for ya’……….. play on, pick and dream. Your recollections and missing-ness have really touched me.
Love you, Norske.
And I’m counting on you to take a leadership position when we finally get our strength to step it up.
hey CT & Pups! Great song, great group.
Man, this song is SO much better with a wailin dobro in it!
*G*
All you religious folks, I don’t know what to say.
I was agnostic from day one.
Still am.
They are stories, meant to control others.
That’s why, Stipes lost his religion.
It’s all a fantasy.
Faith now, is a different thang.
Faith, involves personal choice, and NO bullshit from outside influences.
I dig faith.
*G*
thanks. I keep thinking that the “real” people the ones with jobs and who are profesionals in the government will look out for the people.
No apologies necessary CT…we’ll catch the ‘best of’ on the other side of the moon…
Aloha, comrade norske…! Enjoy the grandkids, they are our future…! ;-)
Citizen edve:
“…but the core of their actions pays testament to their inherent humanity.”
Or not…look nobody is denyin ANYbody their humanity jest the lunacy of their religious beliefs and that’s the point, ain’t it? With all the evidence of the toxic nature of religion to the human spirit I ain’t dancin’ with those poor folks anymore.
Aloha, Sweetie…! Always a pleasure…!
Aloha as well to the universe, the Van Allen Belt, Earth Magnetic, gravity that keeps us and our atmosphere around…Three Dog Night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyI1OImD7ow So how’s you ins tonight in this moment?
I love that guy, I really do.
And this Labor Day, he’s as special as ever.
Bless ya Norske.
Fuckin A, my heart out to ya, yers, and all of us in the foxholes.
But you’d BEST be taking care of us that sang and pick and have a bit of hooch to keep YOU happy, in this fuckin mess.
*G*
*heh* Teach ‘em well…
Um, nope. The real people are us. We’re out here doing the best we can. There are a lot of us, and we need some leadership, of course. But we are still here. I joke “Costa Rica, here I come.” But, really, I’m here and so are my folks. We have to keep huddling and hope for someone to help — I’d step up to lead, but apparently America wants someone with a symetrical face and a stupid mind. I asked my neo-con twin brother if he would like Sarah Palin if she were fat and old, and, of course, he admitted, “Of course not!.” ‘Nuff said.
Honored, ma’am, and bowing to the fest spirits . .
*G*
Hi CT, Dearie, and everyone. Great song pick.
I have some friends who see things thru spiritual or religious lenses, and some who think, OK, this is made up, it’s nonsense. I think we are wired differently.
Yeah, he’s a bit special at times, but he’s solid as solid can be.
This is the kind of weekend and time I feel his proggy love.
That shit don’t stink.
*G*
Hey hoss…
I got a sweet sister who is younger and is a ‘religious person’ to the bone,
but I see her act out her compassion and love in ways that always makes me
want to hug her up and tell her how much I adore her…
She knows better then to get all evangelical on me, because she knows where I stand on the ‘faith’ issue…so we co-exist just fine with mutual respect and love…
but when I meet up with some of the ‘charlatans’ shuckin their jive…
I get a big stone in my shoe…you know what I mean…
I understand what you’re saying, but this: I was taught that religion – my religion, yours, everybody’s – was and is their business, and is not to be visited upon others.
So the toxicity is there I believe – where it becomes something to push on others – and not in the comfort many people find in the experience as individuals.
And I have not been to a church for anything but a funeral or a wedding since 1977.
Two things I did today made me depressed and angry.
1) an ad in the paper about a guy who kind of does what I do. Holding a conference selling his books. He’s in the real world acting professional. Like should be instead of goofing around blogging.
2) listening to the right wing radio host I didn’t get defunded enough to get him off the air. He was going on about how Al Gore should held responsible for the Discovery channel shooter.
Citizen NorskeFlamethrower…
my point was that they seem to conjure up those expressions of humanity regardless of the devil they are dancin with… but ya know, you pick and chose who ya hang with based on who passes your own ‘humanometer’…
Yeah, nice point.
I’m wired differently.
I don’t buy any god, or god like stuff.
I appreciate written history for what it is.
Sadly, religion has used written history to command it’s position for power and control.
But that’s all become a shadow of a distraction, as the 1% rich own and operate the political, social and judicial processes of our once great democracy.
And that’s where we’re at.
Fascism, at it’s worst. Corporate led.
And so far, we seem to have.
Squat. Nuttin.
And that’s what Labor Day, Utah Phillips, and Labor, is all about.
Class war.
And we is losin, badly.
Aloha, bb… Luvs me some Three Dog Night…!
And that, after all, is the key, dontcha think? I’ve known wonderful religious people (though I think they are a bit deluded, but what the hey) — it’s the zealots that I don’t like. A person living a Jesus life is okay by me. Someone ranting Old Testament is a lunatic to me. Maybe I’m just an angry old broad.
Another take on the Losing of Ones Religion, from Rockstar Supernova
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y07BpA33w-0
It was American Idol for Rockers.
Heh, Charlatons with Dan Hicks were bad ass hippie pickers long ago in Nevada/CA.
*G*
Your sis? Hoss, I can’t stand for you.
I have a sis. We have disagreed for decades on a lot, and she won’t even agree with me from long ago, when we were both DFH’s.
Family is everything, but family is worthless when the divide is greater than than the bond.
Reality sez, you hang with those you agree with.
And sometimes, they ain’t family.
*G*
I hate religion.
Aloha, strato…! I’ll stick with the original…! ;-)
A piano doesn’t replace the dobro…!
Speaking as a Baha’i, you shouldn’t hate religion, just question the bearers of the ‘message’, M’dear…! ;-)
Traffic accident in Alaska.
Involves Joe Miller.
Well, I think it’s all a ruse to make the preachers rich.
My dear mom, who bless her heart is still alive and doin pretty much ok at 86…is a ‘religious minded’ person…whose faith acts as a salve for her when she feels her pains and fears…I in no way deny her beliefs…she spent many years when I was a child teaching me tolerance and being inclusive of whatever people came into my life, sprinkled with some common sense…I love and adore her for that instruction that was never laden with religious dogma…
What are we going to move towards in the future if we don’t have the ability to at least show some tolerance of folks that we do not always agree with and their religious beliefs, but possess good hearts and do no harm…I for one do not wish to throw out the wheat with the chaffe…
on the other hand if they are zealots and their soul intention is deception and harm…then that’s a different story…
Like I said, I’m not in tune with the zealots, but I’ve known some religious folks who truly do walk the walk. I may not be on the same path, but I give them credit for being decent human beings. I’ve known some Mormons, even, whose crazy panties I can overlook because they are so darned decent in their daily lives.
That’s so simple, I’m dyin.
*G*
No ‘preachers’ in the Baha’i faith, M’dear…! *g*
Yeah, even when the preachers are smiling and branging ya in, it’s a ruse for yer money.
CT, how much is YOUR tithing obligation to Bahai?
I assume there’s an obligation, from your money, to give to the faith?
*G*
The ‘higher power’ thing in the lives of the twelve-steppers I know has never, not once, intruded on my relationship with these people. They have never proselytized to me or anyone I know.
So if there’s a comfort for them there, if their minds are more at ease, if they more easily cope with what ails them daily, head on.
Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks…oh yea!
The family thing…I had an Aunt I really adored, but we got to a stage where she got all ‘holy’ on me and slowly turned Republican asswad…she literally would tell the rest of the family I was a no good freakin long hair commie, pinko, drug addict, such and such, wherein she did not speak to me for years…I tried to make amends and bend over backwards to create a dialog, but to her, I was a cursed heathen…
so be it…I’m happy and grateful to be alive…and care deeply for those who I want to share my joy and sadness and short time on this old rock with…that definitely includes you and the folks here at FDL…
so be it!
I’m outta here.
Nice chats from so many, a GREAT main thread by CT.
But I’m losin my religion, and I don’t HAVE any to lose.
*G*
Ergo, best to leave it all behind.
*G*
Nite Pups, thanks for all you do and share.
We do it again, if we want to.
*G*
Lyrics and chords at “chordie.com’
http://chordie.com/chord.pere/www.guitaretab.com/r/rem/176094.html
When one shows the qualities that spiritual masters recommend like in Christianity the spiritual gifts in their actions…and the other hand traits that harm…actions speak louder than words. Maybe some are in training. Not to judge but then praise blame is not your friend but a tool to manipulate. I like Dalai Lama said “My religion is kindness” and so did Adam Smith, Nietzsche and Vonnegut. Pretty hard to step on toes when your kind.
If you spend enough time with Larue, no doubt you will be throttled until you join the Holy Order of the Whisk.
Now there’s some proselytizing.
Yeah, kindness rocks. I’m into that.
We’re asked to tithe 5% to our Local Spiritual Assembly, which consists of the locals coming together for ‘Feasts’ ‘Deepenings’ etc… Generally, at somebody’s house to share writings from the vast library of spiritual tracts…! Nobody ‘preaches’ to us…! ;-)
evening, CT … firegoogles
perhaps relevant…
Aloha, PPD…! ;-)
I, happily, participated in the baptism of my twin grandbabies in Italy this summer….and I did not feel like a total hypocrite. We want them to be decent human beings doing the best they can in life. Its a conundrum. I want my grandbabies to be brought up with values/ethics/morals….and religion is a nice grounding (when it isn’t totally whacked out.) We are, I fear, so off track that I cannot imagine what it might take to bring things into proper perspective. Perhaps it’s too late. Sad.
You can’t pay your rent with kindness. This is America. You can’t monatize kindness.
Oh I luv me some Larue…we travel some similar paths and he has a righteous heart…
Didn’t know FDL was a religious organization!
I come here for the bisque and the wafers.
He truly does.
Not for the local beer?!!
Hey PPD, glad to see you
I must say, as much as I like Stevie, I do like the Red Hot Chili Peppers version instead…! ;-)
Wonderfully, kindness doesn’t need monatizing! Kindness just IS. I don’t think that America can ruin that!
I’m servin…step right up ‘Monty Python’s Holy
Grale’!I wish!
Where’s the Guinness?
thanks, margot — it’s good to see you
Hello. Christopher Hitchens on the http://www.slate.com/id/2265515/pagenum/all/.
Oh yea…the Chiles took it to a ‘higher ground’… ;–)
Shhh…! The Biblethumpers heads would implode if that news got out…! ;-)
A real beer by the way….
Nice, edve!
Ba’Hai seems inclusive rather than exclusive.
But today was outstanding for I am cultivating the art of the Green Drink that popular, expensive cleansing drink that makes your body purr like a sweet kitten. Before and after a 30 minute uphill run then went visiting folks it was a sunny afternoon! Some great conversations. My used juicer was 13 bucks at the Humane Society second hand store. What fun grinding up celery, carrots, kale, parsley, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, freshly sprouted mung beans and sprouted red and green lentils and 3-6-9 omega oil! So energizing.
CT…a little bit of a best cover…but fitting this evening…
hope you don’t mind…
Going back to the root: Growing up Roman Catholic gave me a place to launch myself from. And I think that lapsed Catholics are about the funniest (and appropriately moral) people I’ve ever met. I’ve met some kids who grew up Unitarian or Nothing….they are a bit vague. I like that my kids have something to protest. Call me oppositional!
*heh* Ya would’ve had to beat Newt for that submission…! ;-)
Thanks for a nice night CT!
I am gonna bid you fine folk a good evening…
be well, enjoy the holiday…and above all…
sweet dreams….
sleep tight, ed…!
Outstanding.
Again.
Exactly, bb…!
I’m an atheist, but I am sorry to tell all of you that this song isn’t about religion. “I’m losing my religion” is a term that is used in the South when you see someone you are attracted to, and since Michael Stipe is gay he is talking about pining for a guy. It isn’t that I am so knowledgeable about Southern terminology (though I live in Florida), I actually saw an interview with Michael Stipe where he explained the song’s meaning.
Sweet dreams.
One of the things that bugs me is the way that “Christian” right wing radio hosts who attack Muslims for example don’t really have on a real Muslim to disabuse them of what they say. When they do they do what Hannity did with a guest demanding that they call Hamas a terrorists organization and to disavow any Muslim groups that work with them–and in there mind it is all of them.
Ricki Lee has a comment if that OK… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeuoXfKXhOs
What song? (And welcome!)
Welcome to Late Late Night. In the event that you haven’t been here before, Late Late Night goes wherever it goes. There’s no topic, and we meander which ever way suits us.

Hey, BB. Bum link.
“Losing my Religion”, by REM, the song at the top of this post.
You’re right, redd, no doubt…! Aloha…! ;-)
Congrats, Lurk, on the century mark…! ;-)
Crap. It is a good thing that Suzanne does that on occasion, too.

Is that working (107)
It really doesn’t matter in the context of the discussion, maybe everyone knew that already. But I have had discussions with people over the years, some atheists, who have taken a great deal of meaning out of that song and were really deflated when I told them it was just a run-of-the-mill love song. Oh, and thanks everyone for the welcome, I read this every night, it is actually 3AM here.
Looks good from here, bb
What’s lost on all the various Reichtards, is the intent is all the same, with some slight variations… But all the major faiths contain the same moral compass…!
I was familiar with the expression, but half my peeps are from the deep South.
Yup it’s working, and delightful!
Nice gathering, CT. And a good, good night.
We don’t need hate we need love for everyone! The link works. She lays it out… the solution,
Aloha, Dearie and Reddflagg…! Mahalo…! ;-)
That was fun…my grandmother a devout christian commented on our enemies…”Kill them with kindness”. Takes some real skills it is hard to walk that walk when you feel like breaking someones jaw. G)
Sleep well and breathe deep stretch and wiggle toes
Could be the mod squad fixed it.
More like this
We really need more info on our mods and how they work…. ?uestionable folks!
I hear my local guy attack the Koran and quote stuff about Sharia law. I hear Hannity do it too. And the “our extremists” aren’t as bad as your extremists is clear.
They don’t really want a conversation about religion. They want to mischaratize Islam.
That is exactly what the prob is, and, has been throughout recorded history…! 8-(
I shall leave you good folk with this Baha’i duo’s signature tune…!
I hope to see ya’ll tomorrow nite…! Aloha Oe…! *g*
Here’s a laugh for everyone. In 1982 I owned a Rock Night club ( REDS) and we had R.E.M play for $150. It was their 2nd booking ever. They were on their way back to Athens, Ga. after their 1st gig ever in NYC.
Thanks for the great video link, Tuttle. I grew up in NYC in the 50s and 60s. The Catholic Church that included the Berrigan brothers, the Catholic Worker movement and many other examples of progressive social activism seems very far away indeed.
I gave up on it thanks to Humanae Vitae, the 1968 papal encyclical that ignored serious scholarship in order to reinforce the right-wing dogma against contraception.
