As a new poll shows him trailing Megabucks Whitman, ex-governor Jerry Brown of California has decided it’s finally time to begin campaigning to get his old job back:
The political moment that eager California Democrats and some curious Republicans have been waiting for has arrived: Jerry Brown has begun a visible campaign for governor.
He appeared in public Thursday at a sparsely attended rally at Laney College in Oakland, followed by two events in Los Angeles later in the day. . . .
With a TV ad campaign expected to start soon and an accelerated schedule of in-person appearances commencing around the state, the Democrat is ramping up a campaign that many Democrats had been wondering about.
Brown made only a handful of non-fundraiser campaign appearances since the June primary and produced virtually no advertising.
Meanwhile, in almost-completely unrelated national news, President Obama spoke to reporters today and hinted at an election-season economic stimulus proposal — albeit not a very effective substantial one — after months of inaction while unemployed has stayed near 10 percent:
Obama spoke in the Rose Garden after the August jobs report came out better than expected, showing the private sector adding 67,000 new jobs last month and revising upward the numbers from June and July. But unemployment ticked upward to 9.6 percent as more people entered the job market, and the president said it wasn’t good enough. . . .
Administration officials say a big new stimulus bill like last year’s $814 billion measure is not in the offing – nervous lawmakers looking to November’s balloting would not be expected to approve an expensive new measure. But Obama said he’d be proposing a new set of ideas next week. He’s likely to detail them during a speech on the economy Wednesday in Cleveland, midway through an economy-focused week capped by a rare White House news conference.
Obama’s package could include a number of provisions that have languished in Congress for much of the year, including infrastructure bonds for municipalities and extensions for a series of tax breaks for businesses and individuals that expired at the end of 2009.
What do these coincidentally similar events mean? Maybe that Andrew Card was right back in 2002.
Or, perhaps it’s just that when don’t have enough firepower to win the battle, you save your bullets as long as you can.

Where?
I’m in California, and I’m not looking forward to the prospect of Chainsaw Meg. She’s gonna make Arnie look like the good ol’ days.
Jerry Brown is not underwhelming. But, that’s just my opinion. Hey, you’re the one who chose Jerry for, bum bump bum, Friday night. Hm????
And when he declares a payroll tax holiday on SS people will say he is stealing from the SS fund and then Simpson and his friends can say, but we are going to cut SS anyway.
Poor President Obama, still looking for love from the repubs.
Here’s a quick shot of reality, Mr. President. It won’t happen. They hate you and everything you stand for or ever stood for or think or ever thought, and if you offered to give their mothers eternal life, they’d consign the old lady to the devil before they would vote for anything you wanted.
Oh, and good evening Suz and Swopa.
She and Carly will make a good pair.
hey masaccio how ya doing tonight?
Oh yeah…
I guessing that reality is not going to make it into the pages of the PDB.
Jerry Brown is Obama without charisma. A huge coward, an inability to lead. California is screwed.
I was really intending to refer to Brown’s campaign budget compared to Whitman’s, although I do also wish there was a better Democratic candidate available (sadly, I don’t know of one).
Barfaroni! I better leave before I get into trouble. I’ll leave you to handle the non-Californians who think it’s funny. :)
Look who you’ve got! ha! Best of luck.
I always thought ca was kinda goofy anyway. You recalled a governor to get Arnold? How’s that workin out? Anyboby else do that?
Doing good. Cold fried chicken and a glass of rosé, and I’m set.
Reality is a tough sell everywhere, but especially inside the Beltway.
Given the choice we people in California have, I think it’s clear who to back. Yesterday, I signed up as a volunteer for Brown. I’ll be slipping things in to the Lake, here and there.
G’Night Swopa and Suzanne.
Carry on and have fun. (Keeping the Faith is optional, but I suggest it’s a good idea.) Hugs!
Good luck, I bet he’s better than Meg.
Jerry could probably make up the difference by endorsing Prop 19 and explaining in plain language exactly why. Instead he’s come out in opposition, as has Meg. Give the voters something to inspire them, Jer.
I agree 100%.
You know what? I’d love it if Brad Pitt would run. Now, that would be inspiring and motivating. ((Rat))
Oh, it’s one of those nights. Should I stay or should I go now?
Whatever happened to Warren Beatty’s threats to run, anyway?
I think Brad might be too honest for politics and he’s way too smart. Doubt if he’s in California enough to meet the residency requirements anyway. I like the idea, though.
Yup. No contest.
Probably decided it would get in the way of his Million Woman March. Wilt the Stilt and Gene Simmons aren’t even specks in Warren’s rear-view mirror anymore.
Hi Swopa nice post. Yes Jerry needs a great campaign and some really talented PR people. He has name recognition as ex gov and AG…not bad creds. I will campaign for him in the Dem local efforts. And thank you for reminding him to get going. Maybe he has the prison guards union among others locked.
Foiled by the Joker…
Same as Newt’s threats to run for President.
We can thank Darrell Issa for that, who cried when Arnie got the job he thought he bought.
(Tears start at 7:30 mark)
The only person more frightened than me of a Newt Presidential run, is Newt.
There’s an outside chance that he could win. But is so much more likely to end up splintered on the rocks that it would almost be worth it to see him fall that way.
Given what’s out there, it’s Jerry all the way for me
sad, sad California decline and wingnut-induced gridlock
these endless recyclable dinosaur sorta-dems .. I guess Willie Brown was busy ..
jesus, can’t Susie Bright run or something?! Gah!
swopa!!
Aaaack! Maybe this description is why I’m so dissatisfied. I was afraid I was being ageist, because I’m dealing with elder issues. Jerry just makes me tired, and not at all interested in doing anything to help elect him. I just don’t understand how he’s the best this whole friggin’ state has to offer.
Sounds delightful — home or still abroad?
I’d LOVE Newtie to run. He has no idea how yesterday his “intellect” and “ideas” are to the zombie movement he helped create.
hey sharkbabe — love susie bright!
Who is Scott McAdams? Video.
Given the political environment these days and the obvious and widespread poison big money has spread around, it certainly doesn’t surprise me that anyone with any self-respect and a scintilla of sanity stays very well clear of the political debauchery!
Newt is probably the only person on Earth who can’t fathom that he is unelectable.
Then again, running against uber-feeb Obama in ’12 might give him his best chance.
Of course, you’re right. It’s still disheartening. Meg is such a nightmare that I should be happy to vote for anyone opposing her, but it just feels like a pro forma vote. I guess my idealism hasn’t quite expired!
This CA goober race reminds me of Florida when Buddy McKay laid down like a wet noodle for JEB. McKay literally died after his incredibly lackluster campaign.
Now here’s politically tone deaf Jerry Brown “me tooing” the stupid Republican position on the very exciting Marijuana reform proposition.
iMeg has him outgunned in every area except the critically important policy positions. She is a very nasty Republican with nothing other than perceived (media hyped) charisma and tons of cash.
Don’t let it…and I personally find absolutely nothing wrong with voting with your heart, your convictions, your wisdom, and a healthy dose of skepticism. In these days and times it should be a requirement for every voter!
In New Jersey we had a ‘Whitman’ of our own a few years back, and that turned out to be a major debacle…then King George hired and fired her…senseless nitwittery!
Teabaggers do not lack conviction.
What disgusts me is that Brown surely knows all the reasons that pot prohibition is terrible policy but made a crass political calculation that opposing Prop 19 was best for his campaign.
I think he’s wrong about the political benefit and deserves to lose because of it, however I don’t think the citizens of California deserve to be saddled with Meg Whitman. Too bad the voters can’t wipe the gubernatorial slate clean and start over.
IIRC, Christy Todd headed up the toothless EPA so that Megacorps could run unhindered over the environment.
Hey edve! Just waiting for LLN.
I’ll bet Jerry smoked with Linda Ronstadt back in the day.
Hiya Loo Hoo!
ubetcha. also.
Sucks. Its like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Terrible move for Brown.
CA Independents will get suckered by EMeg’s celebrity and perceived bizniss acumen.
Had Brown got on the pot, he would have had a 50/50 shot.
With her money, eMeg is going to cut him up with every stupid thing he’s ever done in the past – including Linda Ronstadt.
Then he gets my vote.
Maybe someone like Elon Musk could do it, though I really don’t know much about him, and he does seem pretty busy with his vanity projects. But yeah, someone from silicone valley who actually did something other than come in after the product was developed. Steve Jobs is certainly enough of an egomaniac to desire the job, and just think of all the pretty iMacs in every government facility in California. He could even make it a campaign slogan, a Macbook in every house and an iPhone in every pocket. He could role out budget proposals and stuff like he does with Apple products, “And one more thing.” He could even call it the iBudget. Maybe rename the UC system iLearn. A BEV program called the iDrive. A sewage treatment modernization called the iShit, the possibilities are endless.
Steve Jobs for Governor!
Hey, CE!!!
Well, he’d get our votes either way. What choice do we have. I can’t wait to hear what he says when he actually starts his campaign!
Obama has plenty of ammo and firepower.
Obama hasn’t stopped shelling his base since he took office.
I wish Obama would fire a round or two at Republicans occasionally.
He has the keys to Dem treasury maybe?
Dibbs on the zed…
What’s with the passive voice?
That wouldn’t be very post-partisany or hopey of him. But it would make a nice change.
Off to read Gail Collins, but I’ll have the zed in spirit.
hey la Suz!
and srsly – Susie is a serious person – there’s so much creativity and thinking people, not just in CA but everywhere – why god why, such mediocre if not pure evil representatives ..
All Brad Pitt has to do is enter the CA Gubernatorial Race…
…the way he entered Ocean’s Thirteen.
Election won before he utters the first word of the announcement speech.
Coolest entrance scene in the history of Western Civilization.
SBcardinal- waving at you from Samarkand! Jerry Brown isn’t the best we have;he’s the best that was willing to run. And I can’t blame anyone for not wanting to be Governor. That 2/3 needed for passing a budget is a guarantee of failure. We need a ballot proposition that repeals the 2/3 rule before anything good will come out of Sacramento.
It is very depressing- even for optimists like you and me.
Meg Whitman won’t hang around Sacramento long if she wins — she’ll be a front-runner for the GOP nomination for president in 2012. Failing upward is her singular skill.
Yes, it would be a eyeful to get one of the best people from Silicone Valley.
However businesspeople make poor politicians. There is a world of difference between externalize the cost and internalize the profits, and externalize the profits and internalize the costs (by building infrastructure).
Silicone Valley is San Fernando valley, home of porn. Silicon Valley is the high tech place somewhere up North of Silicone Valley.
Isn’t there such a ballot initiative up this year?
and just what does Obama stand for?
one poll has her up by 7, a few days ago it was a statistical tie. Meg has spent 120 million , brown has spent 1 million and it’s still tied==meg is toast thank god
If Brown can pull off a victory in the face of such massive, disproportionate spending, my faith in politics (and the voting public) will be restored.
Jerry Brown has experience….Obama is an empty suit who doesn’t have a clue.
I’m not so sure about Brad Pitt as CA governor. He actually said he’d consider capital punishment for BP.
I think they should have to pay through the nose, but CP is going a bit far.
Besides, who would take care of all those children while Angelina is making movies?
” The political moment that eager California Democrats and some curious Republicans have been waiting for has arrived: Jerry Brown has begun a visible campaign for governor.”
“Visible”…? There are persistent rumors that some have actually seen it.
I suspect that, all things considered…
California Democrats would prefer a “viable” campaign.
Of course, making certain that California Democrats actually are able to see it might merely be the first step along those lines.
Vote Laura Wells.
