During last night’s debate with Barbara Boxer, iCarly ran the same playbook the GOP always runs on choice.
The moderator asked Fiorina — after she tried to change the subject to stem cell research — to state whether she would overturn Roe v. Wade. “If there were an opportunity,” Fiorina said, adding quickly, “It is not an issue that I’m running on.”
See how easy that is?
Sure, I’m pro-life, but don’t expect me to actually do anything about it.
It’s been working for them since 1980, so why the hell not?
The rubes will keep pulling the red lever as long as Republicans like iCarly keep checking the “pro-life” box and leaving it at that.
That’s all it takes.

Dang.
Why are the Republics ahead in every poll I see when they have people like Carly “no opinion” Fiorina and Jan “uh, I forgot what I was going to say” Brewer leading the GOP charge?
mercury news reported she made it personal: her husband’s mother was urged to abort her husband.
[Edited by Mod: that is a bridge too far.]
We’ve had almost a decade of the Bush tax cuts. So iCarly, where are all the jobs that the tax cuts were supposed to create?
Because they haven’t been running the government badly for the last two years.
I guess it’s their turn to run the government badly again.
UPDATE: Or, you could say that the Democrats have spent the last four years making the Republicans look good.
Ahem.
I know iCarly.
iCarly appears to be a close friend of my pre-teen son (given the time she seems to spend on our television screen while he’s watching).
Fiorina is no iCarly.
I’m serious. The whole slew of Republican candidates are obvious lying, cheating, opportunististic nutjobs. Yet voters seem to long to put them in charge. What the fuck is wrong with people?
You’ve used a flattering photo of her. Especially the hair. Gak. Here’s the shot from the LA Times. She looks like a frustrated fighter. I was going to say cougar going in for the the kill bite, but then, I thought better that.
Oops, sorry, here’s the LA Times Link. And, I’m not being catty. Every picture tells a story, don’t it? Boxer certainly looks more comfortable, at any rate.
This woman destroyed one of the most innovative American companies ever, in a few short years. Now HP makes crappy printers and overpriced ink/toner. The spirit of The Garage in The Valley ended with her tenure.
Anyone who can ‘rightshore’ 30,000 American jobs and then talk about how she’ll create California jobs is not a serious person. She should be laughed off the stage. All reports I’ve seen seem to indicate that Boxer got that process started last night.
(And, no, Boxer’s not my ideal Senator, and she’s made some doozy mistakes, but can you imagine the damage Carly would do in a majority where her class of incoming freshman includes Joe Miller, Rand Paul, Sharron Angle, and that teabagger who beat hard-right conservative Robert Bennett in Utah??)
Good Lord. What if we got Carly and Meg? Pretty scary question, don’t you think?
I agree it is inaccurate reporting to use a picture of Fiorina that seems to harken back to her HP days. She looks nothing like that now.
Creepy Fiorina also expressed the views of half of the Democratic Party. If Roe gets overturned it will be the Democrats that do it. As you stated, Republicans love the political football aspect. It is to their advantage to keep the issue alive. Once Roe is gone, the party is over for the Republicans.
Me tooism is a weak position and the position of half of the Democrats. Too bad the Democrats fear the truth. Too bad they won’t stand on principles. Every woman should haver the right to do as she wishes to her her own body.
Fiorina now needs to be asked where she stands on abortion in cases of rape or incest.
She will be forced to take the tea party forced birth wingnut position.
BT the GOP base won’t be enthused to turn out for her on the abortion issue. Does Carly have any issues that are popular with voters?
“Sure, I’m pro-life, but don’t expect me to actually do anything about it.”
What’s wrong with that? She has a personal opinion but she isn’t going to act upon it. That’s good, isn’t it? (1) She’s entitled to an opinion and (2) She’s been forthright about not imposing her opinion on others.
If she were to be elected, she would be expected to Vote for her constituent’s interests. Not her own and not a party line, either.
F-n terrifying.
She doesn’t work at HP anymore?
Way to show the GOP you have a Spine Carly…I’m surprised Rahm didn’t recruit you to run as a Dem.
I thought she was fired for driving the company almost into the ground and spying on corporate board members she thought might vote against her.
If (are you kidding me?) Roe is ‘overturned’ all the US troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, Europe, Africa, Asia, and everywhere will be called home to keep the ‘peace’. It’s always good debate bait, froth up the base, make them check their partner’s underwear.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carly_Fiorina#After_HP
My bold Company Performance is code for you lost us money.
thank you ! I am seeing daily stories about wingers using the President’s own talking points to further bolster their positions
No, she’s not forthright. She’s trying to have it both ways.
From a transcription of last night’s debate, Boxer said,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_spying_scandal
I feel so safe thinking Carly will be voting on questions of domestic spying given her past shouldn’t she recuse herself from any votes on that question?
Just what California needs to balance the budget an Outsourcer maybe she can outsource the teachers, firemen and police with Mexicans with visa’s and hire them with no union contracts at minimum wage.
Crap i have to stop thinking worse case scenario’s I’m giving the GOP ideas. Hmm? maybe if I get depressed and drunk for a year I can be the new Christopher Hitchens just how many years has he been drunk now everytime I’ve seen him on tv he’s been drunk.
Why would Californians vote for any republicans after what has been done to this state by them. Minority rule anyone?
I like Icarly too:)
Thats flattering? I’d hate to see unflattering.
Current Rassmunsen poll shows Whitman at 48%, Brown at 40%.
Same Trickledown, smaller gubmint bullshit they (the R’s) all use. Its a very old playbook that resonates with a dumbed-down populace.
Here again, we have Boxer struggling b/c she refused to stand on Democratic Principles. She went along with Rhambama on the shit healthcare bill. She went for more fear mongering global terror war pentagon spending.
Boxer talks a good game, but falls in line with status quo whenever it counts. If health care reform was tangible, if wars were ended, if DADT or DOMA were ended, if we had two bonafide liberals on the Supremes. If they weren’t attacking SocSec, Pick any two.
It would be an entirely different ballgame. Obama revitalized a defeated R pArty by giving them all the seats at the table and with his waffling shit sandwich policies. Boxer helped to enable him.
Comments at LA Times are generally negative for Boxer.
Now the top comment is favorable to Boxer.
It says – if CA votes for a woman that sent 30,000 CA jobs overseas – they deserve waht they get.
See the photo in my link at #11. But, keep your eyes closed. Ha!
And there’s still bad blood (via tbogg):

Time for Brown to spend the big bucks. I know he has them.
It’s a really big, really diverse state. Please don’t say we will deserve her. We don’t!
Arrrgh! I’m Blind I got mirrored, tinted, polarized sunglasses for that type of viewing. Not since SnarkCassy showed a picture Karl Rove’s wife the day Karl Rove resigned ( who looks in a creepy way like his sister) have my eyes been so abused.
( Demi might not be being Catty but I am.)
No, not yet. The campaign will gear up stronger after Labor Day. I’ve already signed up as a volunteer. And, no, he doesn’t have the kind of bucks that Whitman has.
She is a “fierce advocate” for small businesses and tried to prove it by turning HP into one.
Cool then the idea that Obama by running to protect Blue Dogs by ignoring us and giving the Blue Dogs everything they wanted to keep support in their conservative districts is proving wrong.
This could be a diary
He certainly doesn’t have the personal fortune that she has but there are people, at least in NorCal, who contribute huge sums to the Dem Party and Nancy is known as the best fund raiser in the country. I think it all will start to come together after Labor Day – you’re right about that.
That’s a good one. You get a “d’emi” award for that.
Great news/s I might be moving to California in January. :(
Not even close. And the really big Citizen’s United money will very probably go to Chainsaw Meg. I noted this morning that Californians need to press HARD for debates (plural)…and lots of them, although I doubt she will consent to that. A few perfunctory back-and-forths, but nothing really substantive.
Plus, there’s the benefit to pointing out just how much she’s spent and he’s not. I’m hoping voters are tired of big, rich so and so’s with no compassion or empathy for the little guys and gals. Brown has a tremendous amount of experience.
On edit, Nancy who? and, I’d prefer if we start having campaigns built on experience and proven records and not on the size of the pocket book.
If I recall, right after the primary, Brown said something like “money can’t buy ideas / solutions.” He needs to keep hammering that idea.
I saw the first picture then I saw the second one that was the one that made me blind for a second.:) We need a blindness possible as we as our normal Brain Bleach warning.
Those were the words of the commenter on LATimes website. Not mine. I would not wish any Republican on anyone.
Unfortunately, Obama, by inviting Republicans to the table – gave them renewed credibility that Dubya had nearly totally destroyed.
Everything is now Obama’s (and the Dims) fault. Not true, but Obama has not fixed anything correctly.
Rhambama and the complicit D Party have created a huge problem for the Party. They are Republican-lite.
Why vote for lite when you can have the robust full flavor of the real poison.
Things! We would love to have you here.
Who is Nancy, and why do we want to continue to have campaigns run by the size of the pocket books and not on experience and real beliefs?
I didn’t know you’re in California. Whereabouts, may I ask?
Money is the only chance in this climate.
My sister’s husband just got a job in California when my sister finishes her teaching job at the end of the semester we move unless of course I find a reason to stay in Wisconsin but in this economy what are the odds of that happening?
In San Mateo County, south of SF.
We’ve disagreed before. Probably will again.
There is a lot of money up there, I hear. Light bulb going off over my head.
C’mon. What would liberals and progressives do to warrant a military peace keeping misssion in the event that abortion was outlawed? Both groups are legendary for caving-in to power. Both groups are laughed at and despised by both the right and their own Democratic Party.
While I’d be in the street with a slingshot and a black bandana, my liberal and progressive friends would be screaming for the arrest of people like me. You know, a sacrifice to their tormentors in the name of fairplay and bipartisanship.
I don’t disagree – money is running and ruining everything. However with iMEG spending over $100 million, there’s no choice. Would really like to get money out of politics but it’s not happening soon.
This is long so bear with me. Most Americans are populists, which means: a) favoring government regulation of personal/ private matters (whom you have sex with and how, the role of religion in public life, prayer in public schools, etc.) and b) favoring government regulation of the economy (pressuring companies on wages and working conditions, consumer protections against gouging, safety regulations of airlines, etc). Let us also assume that both parties are desperate to receive campaign contributions, and given the lack of disposable income for workers, the rich are their main constituency. Now ask yourself: how can the parties attract populists, given their own ideological perspectives? The republican party is a conservative party, which means they a) favor government regulation of personal/ private matters but b) oppose government regulation of the economy, meaning there is a confluence of interests regarding regulation of personal/ private matters between populists and conservatives, including banning abortion and access to birth control. How much will restricting abortion cost rich people? Nothing; it likely will never come to pass anyway, but if it did it won’t require we take money from the rich, and so the repugs can favor cultural populism without annoying their donor base. Now, how can the democravens, who have devolved from being progressive (i.e., in the US, Keynesian) into traditional liberal, gain support from populists? They can’t. Traditional liberals oppose both a) government regulation of personal/ private matters and b) government regulation of the economy, so there is not a confluence between liberals and populists. But progressives, who a) oppose government regulation of personal private matters but b) FAVOR government regulation of the economy CAN gain support from populists. Summation: liberal parties are a failure in the eyes of most working class people, only winning electorally when the repugs completely melt down, but a progressive party can win with workers, the overwhelming majority of the population.
Yes, the outsourcing of jobs is much more important to the average American than an issue like abortion that isn’t even on the legislative agenda in Washington.
Please tell me the Dems are tying her to Arnold’s economic ideas. Carly if elected will do for America what Arnold has done for California, would be a great sound bite then mention the jobs she outsourced.
Then we need to leak the GOP Secret Plan the the press. The GOP wants to break Unions by outsourcing all government jobs teachers, Firemen, police the Army to illegal immigrants and pay them only $5 a day.
I think the Tea Baggers would believe that:)
Divide and Conquer plus I am quite sure the GOP has already thought of this. If we leak this story any bets George Will will say its premature but an idea worth consideration?
Any bets Thomas Friedman will love the idea?
David Dayen has a fresh cross-post available: Bernanke: Don’t Blame Me for the Housing Bubble
We could just shut all the schools down and send the kids into the fields to pick our food. Nasty /S. Sorry, the What If’s just get to me sometimes.
I’m out and about…see ya. And, I’m with Twain, we’d love to have you here.
you’re right about that. I havn’t seen one repug candidate yet worth a damn. Still they are ahead. WTF? go figure.
Hope to see you soon:)
Yes, but if she’s elected and push comes to shove, you KNOW she would vote to ban abortion. Because she wants to be re-elected.
This is why WE CAN’T STAY HOME IN NOVEMBER!! The Democrats are bad, but the Republicans are HORRIBLE!!
(Then the day AFTER the election, we begin a campaign to get progressive Democrats to leave the party.)
Well? I am in RWC… where you?
Keep whistlin’ past that graveyard…also, something about a mote in your neighbor’s eye…or something…
I think they are code words. “I really don’t support abortion but in this state I better not say so. Live and let live.”
What did Boxer have to say? More abortion erosion with better health insurance subsidies?
They have been trying to ban abortion for 40 years, it ain’t gonna happen. Re-read the original post: repugs like Fiorina are all talk, it is all for show to win elections, but they will never get the 60 votes necessary. Stalemate. So I won’t be conned to vote for the democravens.
The day, if it ever comes that Roe v Wade is overturned, the Republican Party will cease to exist! That’s the only reason they exist today!Take-away abortion the Regressive Republican melts into the history books!
Question:
If life begins at the “Moment of Conception,” who defines the “Moment of Conception?”
Tax cuts for the rich end up creating recessions and depressions, later, now the road. As they say, just follow the money. The rich deposit their unneeded tax cut monies into numbered Swiss bank accounts or other off-shore tax havens where it can rest easy… The loss of tax revenue forces the federal government to either borrow expensively or to cut expenditures, both of which have a negative effect on the general economy. So if you want to create the next Republican recession or depression, cut taxes for the ruling class.
Listening to the broken-record looney-tunes songs by Repubs like Carly and Meg is a waste of time. They are clueless and greedy, with no thought of helping our ailing California economy.
Hate and fear are the GOP’s stock in trade. But please don’t underestimate
this. Miller in Alaska got his vote from the same crowd of folks that
support Angle in Nevada. And they all want to take Social Security to
pay for the Empire’s war. Alan Simpson is advocating default on two and
one half trillion dollars in bonds.
The landmark Roe v. Wade decision essentially pitted a pregnant woman’s freedom to choose against her home state of Texas and its anti-abortion laws. coincidentally Texas exercises capital punishment and executes more people than any other state, by far.
The ulcer drug Cytotec (Misoprostol) is an easily available and highly effective abortificent, and frankly it is the reason that Roe v. Wade and (eventually) state laws protecting reproductive freedom are doomed.
http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/2010/08/02/misoprostol_abortion
Just like the absence of a military draft denied anti-war activists the motivated support of military age men and their families, the fact that women with a friendly doctor (or a friend with stomach ulcers) can have a DIY abortion with no one the wiser, means a lot of reproductive age women and their families will no longer have a personal motivation to go the polls to support pro-choice candidates.
On the other hand, the pro-life voters will always make abortion their litmus test, so they will stay motivated to support anti-choice candidates. As a consequence, its a deadlock certainty that Republicans in Congress will never let the FDA ban Cytotec, nor will they ever allow the Selective Service to bring back the draft. A voter on the other side that stays home on election day is almost as good as a voter on your side that shows up. The Republicans are going to win a lot of elections based on one simple unstated theme– “Go back to sleep liberals, your $1 abortion pill and all-volunteer army aren’t going anywhere”.
Its cynical, but Democrats in Congress would only benefit if, instead, the FDA banned Cytotec and the Selective Service brought back the draft lotteries. I’d be OK with the latter (after all, I’m now too old for the draft). :o)
