Requiem for Reality

By: Glenn W. Smith Sunday August 22, 2010 9:30 am

Emerson said, “…wise men pierce this rotten diction and fasten words again to visible things.” It’s in his essay, “Nature,” and he was talking about the sacrifice of sacred truth to profane ambitions:

US Charitable Donations Lag Despite UN Report of 15 to 20 Million Pakistanis in Need of Shelter, Food and Emergency Care

By: Jim White Sunday August 22, 2010 7:45 am

As new waves of flooding affect Pakistan today, we learned from the UN on Friday that between 15 and 20 million Pakistanis are in need of shelter, food and emergency care. Despite this dire situation, US charitable giving lags far behind the rate seen for the earthquake in Haiti. In response to lagging private donations, governments are doubling the original commitment to Pakistan through the UN.

The View’s Right-Winger, Elizabeth Hasselbeck, to the Left of Obama on Marriage Equality

By: Teddy Partridge Sunday August 22, 2010 6:45 am

Well, this is embarrassing for Team Obama: the resident right-wing bomb-thrower on The View, who campaigned alongside Sarah Palin in 2008, has said she supports something called “gay marriage” which I presume is what the rest of us call marriage equality. This puts her to the left of President Obama.

Late Night: Andy McCarthy Attempts “Thought Experiment,” Neglects “Thought” Part

By: Thers Saturday August 21, 2010 8:00 pm

The Manhattan Mosque of Murderous Musselmen nonsensical bigotry has been so deeply stupidly bigotedly annoying in a bigoted stupid nonsensical way that it seems like it’s been going on for months now, which, in fact, it has. And NRO’s Andy McCarthy has been screeching about it all the way, though he’s impressively ramped up the [...]

WA Sen: Analysis of 2008 Elections Projects a Narrow Win for Patty Murray

By: Jon Walker Saturday August 21, 2010 6:00 pm

I recently did an analysis comparing the results Washington state’s 2008 top two primary to the 2008 general election, and found a very high correlation between the primary results and the general election results. Extrapolating the 2010 primary results from last Tuesday (because of mail-in ballots the vote total is not final and will likely improve slightly for Murray), my analysis projects a close win for incumbent Patty Murray this November.

High Risk Pools Have Few Customers, So Far

By: David Dayen Saturday August 21, 2010 5:00 pm

Many of us worried that the bridge plans for the uninsured before the changes from the Affordable Care Act that largely come into being in 2014 were underfunded and insufficient. In particular, states were to set up high-risk pools, bolstered with only $5 billion dollars in federal funds. It didn’t seem like this would help enough of the millions of people denied coverage by an insurer for a pre-existing condition. But the money doesn’t seem to be the main problem – it’s getting people to know that the pools exist.
