More Media Coverage of Facebook’s Ban on “Just Say Now” Marijuana Logo

By: Jon Walker Wednesday August 25, 2010 11:25 am

Neil Katz of CBS News notes that “Facebook’s position on the ads is ironic considering the content found on its site. One group called “Marihuana, Marijuana, Mariguana” has 369,000 active monthly users who post photos of bikini clad bong smokers and giant piles of weed. A popular game on Facebook called “Pot Farm” has 740,000 monthly users who enjoy trying grow their own virtual marijuana fields.”

[More coverage after the jump. You can see the ad Facebook banned, sign the Facebook petition and swap our your Facebook picture for the censored "Just Say Now" image here.]

Rick Scott, Florida’s New Republican Candidate for Governor, Rides Islamophobia to Nomination

By: Blue Texan Wednesday August 25, 2010 10:30 am

This is pretty much where the GOP is right now. How much fact-free hate mongering and demagoguery can they fit into a 30-second spot? Let’s count the lies.

Simpson Ducks Comment as More Letters Emerge

By: David Dayen Wednesday August 25, 2010 9:46 am

Simpson has not only been writing letters to OWL. He earlier penned a note to Dean Baker, economist and co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, apparently unaware that Baker is recognized in his field.

I’m really writing this in the hopes that I’ll get the next letter.

Marine Commandant Conway: Stay in Afghanistan, Keep Gay Soldiers in Separate Sleeping Quarters

By: David Dayen Wednesday August 25, 2010 9:04 am

James Conway is the commandant of the Marine Corps. One thing you may skip over in this article, which I want to reinforce, is that he’s leaving at the end of the year. So you can disregard his opinion on the kind of things that will happen after he departs, like President Obama’s July 2011 deadline to begin troop withdrawals from Afghanistan, and especially Conway’s personal homophobic opinion.

Mary Landrieu’s “Sky is Falling” Warning On Job Losses From Deepwater Drilling Moratorium Proven False

By: Jim White Wednesday August 25, 2010 7:00 am

On June 9, Senator Mary Landrieu questioned Interior Secretary Ken Salazar at a Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing in which she proclaimed that the Obama administration’s six month moratorium on deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico would result in more job losses than the BP oil spill itself. Today’s New York Times brings us the reality behind Landrieu’s hissy fit, and, surprise, surprise, she could not have been more wrong.

Who’s the Huckster for This High-Interest War?

By: Derrick Crowe Wednesday August 25, 2010 6:00 am

On college campuses, credit card companies entice naive undergrads into signing up for super-high-interest-rate credit cards by giving away “perceived high-value items” like t-shirts or coffee mugs. They’re called perceived high value items because they really aren’t worth as much as people assume. Their only purpose is to distract from the terrible terms in the [...]

Here We Go Again: Obama’s War in Yemen

By: Siun Wednesday August 25, 2010 1:30 am

As we’ve previously mentioned in December, January and this month, Yemen is one of the “roughly a dozen countries” besides Iraq and Afghanistan where Obama’s administration is waging war. And as is the norm in these secret, undeclared wars, we are working hand in hand with unsavoury governments whose own agendas of repression are ignored [...]
