Boy, Dexter Filkins sure has had an interesting week cataloging the sniping within American strategy, huh? Mind you, I’m not complaining about Filkins’ reporting (though his descriptions of anonymous sources doesn’t seem to comply with the NYT’s policy on identifying the motives for these anonymous leaks–it’s sure be useful to readers if he’d place his sources a little better, because no one on the inside is really fooled by these anonymous citations).

But he does seem to be the focus of a lot of competing leaks of late.

Senator Simpson is not just sexist and rude, he seems to know next to nothing about Social Security. Even worse, he shows no interest in learning.

Saturday marks the fortieth anniversary of the iconic “I Have a Dream” speech by the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior. Sadly, although Dr. King’s dream envisioned a time when we as a nation would “transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood”, a new generation is sowing discord at the expense of brotherhood.

This whole “I never intended” Alan Simpson apology has gotten entirely out of hand: the person to whom the insult was directed still wants Simpson to resign from the Catfood Commission, while the White House, an unrelated party to the insult or the apology, accepts Simpson’s apology. D’oh!

Meanwhile, Pataki should listen to the Mayor of New York.

Matt Bai has a NYT article ostensibly about Democratic Congressman Earl Blumenauer and his willingness to cut wasteful spending to reduce the deficit — no news there — but Bai turns it into a dishonest hit piece on the Social Security Trust Fund.
