Did this rally restore honor to America? Hardly. The convention on Saturday, which coopted one of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s greatest moments, was one big Caucasian pity party, filled with resentment, steel-reinforced ignorance (“There’s a Communist in the White House”!), simmering racism and misplaced anger, paid for by the Koch brothers and other Republican deep pockets.
More than anything else, it was a surreal–albeit disappointingly ennervating–”through the looking-glass” moment: whites, the vast majority of whom have never in their lives been deprived of their civil liberties (unless you include missing the 2-for-1 special at the Old Country Buffet last Tuesday because Eunice was waiting for the darned UPS driver to deliver her new Marie Osmond Charisma™ doll from QVC), are now the oppressed minority.
The entire event was one big thumb in the eye of the memory of the late civil rights leader, starting with Sarah Palin’s call to “honor” Dr. King’s memory by supporting the military.
Evoking the legacies of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. and former presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Palin called on Americans to restore traditional values to the country by celebrating those who have fought for the nation’s freedoms.
Never mind that King, a pacifist, spent his life railing against the military. We’re on the other side of the mirror now.
Then there was the Sandwich Incident at a local deli, in which one Teabagger, already hopped up on anti-government rhetoric, became enraged that, thanks to D.C.’s “bag tax” instated earlier this year, he had to pay an additional 5¢ — FIVE RED PENNIES, PEOPLE! — for his sandwich. What did our intrepid Jean-Paul Marat wannabe do instead of paying for his meal? He hurled the sandwich at the innocent employee behind the counter, hitting him in the face, and stormed out. Vive le Revolution!
Then there was Beck’s straw man for the day, his weepy, flatulent call for America’s to return to godliness (funny, I didn’t know it had departed), which even evangelical Christians have a hard time swallowing, given Beck’s conversion to Satanic Mormonism:
Glenn Beck promotes a false gospel. … Mormonism is not a Christian denomination but a cult of Christianity. … Many endorse false gospels including Mormonism.
Ironically, the next morning during an interview with Chris Wallace, crocodile tear-streaked Beck slammed President Obama’s religiosity, sending out the popular liberation theology dogwhistle to his rabid fans:
WALLACE: You said recently that the reason that a growing number of Americans don’t think President Obama is a Christian is because they don’t recognize the faith that he is practicing and in fact you even called it a perversion of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And you know I respect you and I say this affectionately but who made you the God Squad?
BECK: Oh, nobody made me the God Squad. The pope even said, this is Pope Benedict, that it is demonic not divine when theology crosses into the line of doing that which only the divine can do. He was speaking specifically about liberation theology.
If Beck were such a devout, good Christian, he would know that (1) he was misinterpreting what the Pope said, and (2) Jesus was the first practitioner of liberation theology. Silly me. That would require the huckster to own up to his fraudulent dog and pony show.
The last thing Glenn Beck and his minions are concerned with is honor or peace or civil rights. They’re more concerned with cynically manipulating gullible, easily frightened people whose primary motivators are distrust of “The Other” and a penchant for conspiracy theories in order to further their own financial success. This gathering was nothing more than a publicity stunt for Beck and Palin, at the expense of the memory of Dr. King and his efforts.
Anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is a Beckerhead.

Hey, hey, hey! Do I get a Zed?
Watertiger!
Will we ever see the accounting?
I mean, how much went to the kids of our fallen heroes, anyway?
Patriots don’t demand accountings!
Hey, WT, CBS news said (based on aerial photography) that Beckerhaid had 87K plus or minus 9K. It strikes me that that isn’t very much different than the run-of-the-mill summer Saturday crowd on the Mall.
Anybody with more D.C. experience than I have think otherwise?
Some number between 0 and, well, 0, Teddy.
Only 5¢ for a bag? The local health food store charges 15¢.
Well, Michele Bachmann said one million, at least! Who are you going to believe – that liberally biased media or a true patriot?
Hi Watertiger. I think I’m going to sit this one out. I can’t stomach one more mention of Beck. Goodnight all.
Night Margaret. Sleep well.
Oh, well, if La Bachmann says it was a million, then it must be … a crock of bat guano. Well, maybe something else, because Bat Guano would make a really good name for a character in a Kubrick film.
Good night, Margaret.
In case anyone was wondering, Victoria Jackson, formerly of “Saturday Night Live”, lost her mind. The video is proof. (Yes, she’s a serious teabagger.)
Ooh! Can we get a nice, rousing “STFU” from the pope?
I admire watertiger’s ability to look squarely at this on-going farce and write funny stuff. I have watched this and am close to sputtering gibberish (not that I was that far from there to begin with).
brava
Let’s see if any of these fat ass palefaces can match what Dr. King actually accomplished in his life:
“Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter. I won’t have any money to leave behind. I won’t have the fine and luxurious things of life to leave behind. But I just want to leave a committed life behind. And that’s all I want to say.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Excerpt from the “Drum Major for Justice Sermon, 1968
AquaCat,
Victoria Jackson lost her mind a long, long time ago. Fortunately, no one takes her seriously because whenever she’s introduced, it’s, “Victoria Jackson, former SNL actress.”
And I’m not at all sure the crazies on the right see comedians as social philosopher-critics, a la Lenny Bruce or George Carlin.

Watertiger!
I think all of them learned their history at Glenn Beck U.
Amen.
Night.
They teach history there? I thought it was histrionics, basic and advanced.
I know what those words mean, but when you put them together they make no sense.
They think she’s at least as serious and credible as Al Franken…shows what they know.
And now they can bookmark “The Blaze”, Glenn Beck’s new website about . . . Glenn Beck. (See link in last graf)
History, histrionics, hysteria…it’s all the same to Beck.
You can double major in Weepology.
You Vix-en.
True, but the teabaggers don’t know the difference. We should invite them all to go huckleberry picking in Glacier National Park. My friend and I saw 15 grizzlies and a black bear there this weekend. There is a bumper crop of huckleberries at mid and low elevation, but the high elevation berries haven’t ripened yet because of our cold spring. as a result the bears are all down at lower elevations than usual.
According to his wiki, he briefly attended Yale.
I assume that was just prior to them running him off at gun point.
But only for the prestige of being an Ivy League dropout.
If they are a non-profit they will have to file a Form 990 at the end of the tax year.
Bears in the bearries. Once saw a couple of black bears scarfing down huckleberries in Ranier Park.
He was apparently working in New Haven at the time. Not sure that is one of the wiki entries I would trust.
That would be the Poison Ivy League.
Bushie went to Yale. Beck attended Yale.
Anybody see a pattern here?
Could we get teabaggers reclassified as bear-food?
I’d hate for the bears to suffer for doing the Universe a service.
I assumed the Beck groupies screamed and swooned and had orgasims like the girls did at the Beatles concerts did. I bet all the he-men patriots creamed their shorts when sister Sarah got going. And they probably walked funny leaving the event!
“Heeeyyyyy, Boo Boo!”
We actually encountered three grizzlies (a sow and 2 cubs)while returning from a hike foraging about 50 yards above the trail (between us and the trailhead). Really, truly awesome to see and something neither of us ever wants to repeat.
Well, first of all, I like Old Country Buffet.
But all this talk about “liberation theology”. I mean, that was a Falwell pet peeve, what??? 20-30 years ago? When Central America, el Salvadoe, Nicaragua and all that was happening. I mean, c’mon Beck. Liberation theology. Sheesh. So yesterday, man.
as for that “quote” from pope Benendict… five gets you ten he made that shit up. i’ll try to run it down.
gently with the bear-food, please
What have the bears ever done to you?!?!
All the early CIA went to Yale. The CIA was a wholly owned subsidiary of the college in its first couple of decades, near as I can figure out. Then there’s Kerry, though I can’t figure out whether it’s the “Who will be the last person to die” Kerry or the “Reporting for duty” Kerry.
who attended Yale, briefly? Beck??
I am afraid that they are probably far too toxic to allow the bears to actually eat them.
I’ll betcha on that. Black bears are scary enough when you round the trail and there they are, but grizzlies! Did you see you see the movie Grizzly Man? Truly nuts.
Look, if a dog can eat it’s own…
oh, never mind.
I did not see the movie, but his death made the news here and the man was a suicidal lunatic.
Yes. Beck’s wiki is quite a read; filled with personal tragedy, substance abuse, divorces, ADD. If any of it is accurate.
This is just plain freaking embarrassing. The world is watching. How I need a Panamanian passport…
“I was born a poor black child…”
Beck is as frightening a public figure as we have seen in a long time.
Just take a look at this segment from his TV show. It scared the hell out of me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNp9GSbFQhQ
Don’t panic. The world is laughing, but it’s laughing at Beck, Palin, Hagee, Jackson, and all their silly ilk.
Beck never had a rally; he had a paid-for-view event.
You’ll see a real rally when Tea Party Patriots bring Gary Johnson to town.
I did see the movie. Lunatic about sums it up.
The scariest wildlife I came across while hiking was a moose in Baxter Park in Maine. Not because they are so objectively dangerous, but because they are HUGE. Was one of those rounding the bend in the trail, then being eyeball-to-eyeball with one. We both went our own ways, carefully.
I rather liked The Jerk.
…who pulled myself up by my own bootstraps…
They actually are dangerous and a fair number of people get hurt by them in just those circumstances.
Curiously timed, as well.
I’m amazed that any human being would throw something at another over a nickel. I can see an argument, even a foolish one, getting out of hand, but over a nickel? There really are some incredibly stupid people wandering around loose out there.
Me too.
Stupid and malicious. You forgot the malicious part.
The thing that would concern me about a wild animal, even one that is herbivorous but large, is that I would have no idea what would set it off. Look at it too long? Not long enough? Shout at it? Keep quiet? In some cases, it depends on the animal, and maybe how it’s feeling at that moment.
I’m not surprised. The startle reflex is not very controllable in humans, let alone moose.
Beck went out in a haze of glory.
Isn’t Eve the first?
Those two traits are so often together that it seemed redundant.
Me too, but I just couldn’t help myself.
1. Why would anyone want to be “enlightened” by pervert pederast Pope Benedict? WTF?
2. I agree: who made Beckerhead the “God Squad”? Beck’s spent the past 2+ years engaging almost solely in looney divisive hate politics, and now suddenly he’s Mr. Man-o-God with a direct hot line to the divine (and I ain’t talking about Harris Glen Milstead). What a crock.
So instead of channeling Andy Griffith’s Lonesome Roads, now Beckerhead’s channeling Burt Lancaster’s Elmer Gantry. Who’s Beckerhead gonna channel next? Daniel Day-Lewis’ Daniel Plainview?
Tent-show revival preaching can be powerful, especially with the crowd of Beckerheads comprised mainly of older, white, entitled prosperity “Christianists” who attend C Street “Family” churches and listen to Beck, Limbaugh and Fox daily. They are frightened – mainly due to the fear tactics of Republicans and the media – and they are looking for leadership. Sadly, they are being misled once again by a cynically manipulative shyster charlatan out to make a quick buck by selling these evangelicals a bunch of hooey. This kind of tent-show revival hucksterism is old-time religion and something that this crowd was guaranteed to swoon to. Bible Spice, James Hagee and Rabbi Lapin were just the icing on the cake.
Nevermind. This too shall pass, and next time the ‘Baggers will be back with their hate signs and a mighty roar demanding that socialist Social Security be abolished forthwith… mark my words: that’s part of the plan. Note who funded this shindig: the execrable Koch brothers. Believe me, they’re the men with the plans. Beck’s just an egomaniacal shill in it for the money.
You people are really reaching for shit now. The “sandwich incident”? 10′s of thousands of people are judged by some idiot who supposedly threw a sandwich? I thought judging people by the actions of a few was bigotry? Isn’t that what liberals preach? And yet, they are willing to condemn millions of citizens who they don’t know of racism, simply for disagreeing with their policies. Pretty ugly.
Stupid?
No, I don’t think so. Loose cannons, feeling very threatened and on a hair trigger.
Dangerous people sums it up.
Prolly thought it was a gd librul plot to take all his money.
That’s why we quietly turned around and quietly retreated. Luckily we weren’t making any obnoxious human sounds when we came upon him, so he was not very upset. We waited awhile and advanced slowly & carefully & he had retreated into the woods.

Stupid, malicious, and entitled. You forgot just how self-centered these prosperity “Christianists” are. Do unto others…??? Don’t make me laugh.
Next thing you know the gubmint gonna take over his Medicare and Social Security.
Oh goody. We has our very own troll…
Is The Lurking Mod still around?
Given that the sandwich probably cost him $5 or so, it doesn’t seem like a terribly fiscally prudent move.
To me, risking an assault charge over a nickel is stupid.
Threatened sense of entitlement.
In their version of the Bible, it says, “Do unto others before they can do unto you.”
Innumeracy – it can take your life some day.
Serious Q. Does one need a permit for a gathering of this sort? If so, what are the criteria?
It’s not just a coincidence that a mosque was burned in Tennessee in the last few days.
Frankly, freaking out over a nickle, even without the assault, is insane.
That’s a bumper sticker, my friend!
Always.
Yeah, it’s stupid. But he got to express his rage.
By the way, one thing I noticed about the Beckerhead rally is just what sheeple his followers are. The organizers said, “Don’t you be bringing no signs down heah now, y’all hear?”
And there wasn’t a sign in evidence.
You must be a tall person!
If I could figure out how to add the thought “and it doesn’t even have to be your innumeracy”, I’d be printing them up already…
In case you all can’t get enough of the Beckster he has a new website devoted to himself up: The Blaze
Is there a god? If so, please help us. NOW.
Yeah, ok. but their entitlement is only “threatened” bc of the divisive crap that Beckerhead and Babble Spice lie to them about.
Yes, you need a permit. You have to get it from the National Park Service. I have no idea what the conditions are to obtain said permit.
Yes – he’s the Anti-Sermonette.
Oh dear, there’s a perfect quote in the Phillips book about their sense of entitlement & how they pray for material goods. But my book is downstairs and I’m too lazy to go get it and look for the quote. But you are spot on. One of their defining characteristics is ‘personal responsibility,’ and that includes praying for your portfolio to go up, or a Mercedes or a McMansion. Seriously.
I hope you’re right. Now it’s an embarrassment to show an American passport. Truly.
Yes, there is a god.
But she can’t do anything about 186,282 miles/sec.
Beck is living proof that than answer is “no.”
It’s the authoritarian way to want Big Daddy to provide rules. And so, they feel “safe” following the rule. Plus Beckerhead prepped them for this by hinting broadly that God was gonna speak thru him at the rally, so really, it’s all about reverence for white really Big Daddy upstairs. Ya dig? Very predictable.
Beethoven did write a little piece called “Rage over a lost penny”
I went to one of the early Teabaggers rallies in Manhattan. I gained no particular insights to add to the discussion, except I wondered why they were all so worried about O raising their taxes, since few looked to be in the $250,000 income range. I was going to ask around, but thought that would be more aggravation than it was worth.
But then O imposed a medical insurance mandate…
Nice catch, Kelly.
I missed all TPM’s coverage of this thing (largely because I didn’t care that much, to tell the truth). Were there enforcers there to make sure there were no signs, or was this just obedience?
Given how the sign-making has gone in the past, it was probably a good decision on Beck’s part.
Oh mos def: every one of these C Street “Family” churches (and so many are infested by Dough Coe’s boys) are all about praying for things for yourself. It’s totally antithetical to the religious teachings I got growing up, but my rightwing fundie family all go to churches like that.
Plus nearly every (or every one) mega church is all about praying for yourself to get lots of stuff. It’s quite insane, imo.
Yes, but back then the average income was about a dollar a day in the US. Not sure what it was in Germany or Austria.
You’re absolutely correct.
A penny was worth something back then.
I don’t know. I didn’t care enough to follow this made for Fox mess.
Time for me to toddle off. I actually have to teach in the morning, so I had best get my beauty sleep. Take care all.
Yeah, but that’s when a penny was worth…, well, something, I’m sure.
BTW, do pianists ever get RSD? The one in that video sure is banging the keys pretty hard. I have to assume he’s practiced a lot.
Speaking of atheists, here’s Tony-the-Blare’s pronouncement on the subject at his Georgetown speech today or yesterday
Good night, Dick.
I don’t know for sure, but I read that there were some signs, albeit less incendiary than usual. I think this crowd is very authoritarian, though, and quite inclined to obey Beck, who they utterly revere (believe me: my sibling was there; my sibling is quite n-u-t-t-y but will OBEY the Beckerhead to the nth degree).
Yes, it was a good call on Beck’s part, especially as he decided to channel is inner tent-show preacher. I guess even for the likes of Beck, having nasty racist signs is a bit much if you’re trying to run a tent-show revival and allegedly “channel” the holy spirit.
My money’s on the Koch brothers – who paid for a lot of this – pushed for this “rule.” I believe the Kochs want to reach out to Indies and understand that Indies are turned off by the nasty vitriol and racism usually on display at these rallies.
Have a good night. ANd have fun corrupting our youth.
Yes, they do. And other problems, too, like focal dystonia.
Speaking of Teabaggers’ signs, check out the trailer from tonight’s movie. It’s pretty funny.
Still, one of my favorite movies!
To which my reaction was: What, Mr. “We’re fifteen minutes from Armageddon unless we give ole’ Saddam what for” is telling people religion is under attack? Why would anyone believe him?
There has to be a moment when the “boy who cried wolf” reflex kicks in.
Unlike W, Blair doesn’t have the social awareness to keep out of sight.
True but the meme of “religion is under attack” is popular with the PTB. It gets conservatives to vote against their own self-interest.
If you’re a fundie, your religion is always under attack. It makes them feel better to believe they’re being persecuted.
Goodnight, Dr. D.
It makes them feel important to be under attack. Plus then God loves them more than you.
Just what are the Koch’s paying for? I have been to many tea parties and I didn’t even know who they were until the moron Frank Rich mentioned them. The people that attend these demonstrations come on their own and mainly use their own means of transportation to get there. The movement is leaderless and that is a good thing. Most attendees have no idea who Koch or Dick Armey are.
Does the presence of people like George Soros on the left mean that all liberals are drones who are following their masters? No, I am sure most of them are true believers. Face it libs, MOST Americans disagree with your vision. They may not be as Conservative as I am but they sure as hell want nothing to do with your agenda.
It isn’t because of Beck, Limbaugh, Fox News, the Koch’s or Obama not getting his message out. The message has been received. Americans understand the health care bill and the stimulus. They know what cap and trade, card check and amnesty for illegals means too. They don’t want any of it. Get a clue and get ready for a drubbing at the polls.
I just figured that W. really hates people.
Beck was convinced by a friend at the time to take a course at Yale.
The friend? Joe Lieberman.
Heh – thank the dog for small favors. Hopefully W is drunk most of the time; suits me.
Yep – arson in Murfreesboro doesn’t count, cause yannno, you have a right to worship in any Christian religion of your choice here in America.
I’m going to wander off to find a bed and a book. Be excellent to each other!
There’s even a name for it: called the Lost Cause Myth. Symptoms are feelings of crucifixion, followed, of course, by resurrection. Or is that erection? I get so confused by fundie theology.
You’re probably right, but then, W’s also probably drunk.
Not quite accurate. W is quite fond of the ‘haves’ and the have-mores.’
Must…not feed the troll
Absolute obedience.
(also an answer to onitoes @ 124)
True, much of gullibility is being ready to believe something. And I suspect that many of the folks who were eager to believe him this time are still wondering when the U.N. is going to stop screwing around and find those WMDs now that we’ve made Iraq safe for them.
Except The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
I’ve known some mighty fine snake handlers in my day but it was more of a secular thing. :)
I’ll drink to that.
It’s the same deal as anti-abortionists being cheered on when they kill doctors & others providing abortions. It’s fine to attack Muslims because they worship the devil. It’s only OK if you’re a Republican, doncha know?
Nighters DD.
Oh! That was splendid! Bravo Kissin! Thanks KC!
They are gradually garnering mainstream acceptance by hating all the right things.
No, they have answer for that. the WMD are hidden in Syria. Seriously, this is what most rightwing fundies believe. I think Beckerhead told them that.
I think it is obvious they are pushing for a civil war…they have the guns.
heh – good one! This round’s on moi!
The right wing nutjobs should stay out of my ‘hood.
I know, I’ve heard some say so. I was kinda using a facetious statement there.
Personally, the Syria thing strikes me as being like the 9/11 conspiracy theories – knock one down by actually showing people what’s really true, and they invent another one. The great thing about the Syria hypothesis is that it will be decades, if ever, before anyone can prove them wrong. Plenty of time to sell books in the meantime. Who knows, there might even be a movie deal.
Indeed, the Mormons work very hard to gain evangelical Xtian acceptance: witness Prop H8te in CA. Plus the Beckerhead, of course. I am amazed that my fundie siblings love him so bc usually they spout off about Mormons worhsipping the devil.
Not with the Fundagelical Wing, RF.
Those folks hate (and I think, fear and envy) the Mormons. I have a few on my Mom’s side of the family…
Totally. NO way to prove or disprove the Syria WMD fiction, so, eh? Must be true. These people don’t want to believe that they were royally duped by their other “man-o-gawd” W, who also claimed to have a hotline to the big white man upstairs.
Now if they could just make that magic underwear fashionable!
You’ve seen evidence of that? I remember a poll (either USA Today or Pew) a couple of years ago saying that a substantial number of people in America wouldn’t vote for a Mormon.
It’s not as bad as being a Muslim or an atheist, but it’s still not acceptable to a lot of folks Mitt Romney would need to vote for him.
Wasn’t too long ago the fundies and the Baptists burned the Book of Mormon.
Longer ago (but not too) Mormons as well.
They don’t see eye to eye at all. And few of the Beckys know Beck is one. I think he slipped up on FOX on Sunday when he talked about his faith.
Flushing the future….I love Cream!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bPTf-gov2s
Oh I dunno. My radically rightwing fundie family are gradually softening towards the Latter Day Saints due to the Beckerhead mainly. Makes me wonder if the Mormons paid him to “convert.” Seriously; not joking. Of course, we’ll never know.
Actually, whether we win in November or not, the people voting against their own self-interest is telling. And you should be scared of it too. Either the corporations win (fascism) or the people win. Simple.
Exactly … their theology places Mormons in the same room with Anton LaVey. They may see Mormons as useful allies, but they’ll never trust them nor accept them as Christians.
Raincheck, please. Time for me to turn into a pumpkin.
Nite all.
I’m watching PBS “Speaking in Tongues.” What a wonderful show about foreign language immersion. You know, like kids speaking another language before being accused of being unpatriotic in kindergarten.
LaVey is a capitalist…not xian.
You’re right about that, which is what made the Sat rally so “interesting.” That Beckerhead channeled this evengelical tent-show revival preacher was… uh, rather amazing under the circumstances. If you haven’t been raised in a radically rightwing fundie family, some of that may go over your head. For me, it was nothing short of astonishing. Remains to be seen how it pans out.
Nighters, eCAHN.
I think Beckerhead is about as authentic in his presentations and beliefs as L. Ron Hubbard was in Scientology. Campbell once said that if a guy wanted to make a mint, inventing a religion would be the way to go.
ElRon took him up on it, but no rational person could believe a word of Scientology. Nor could any rational person buy into a word of the Mormon mystery religion.
Nitey-night.
CE!
Don’t get me going. Lately I’m forming the opinion that speaking only one language in today’s global world passes from “not a good idea” to “get 3 under yer belt or yer doomed to irrelevance.”
Actually, he was the self-styled Head Satanist and author of The Satanic Bible. Not that that excludes his being a capitalist.
Props for the reference to Anton LaVey!! LOL! Well, LaVey never pretended to be other than the satanist that he is/was. Mormons, otoh, are definitely trying to sell themselves as a type of Christian. Visit their main Temple in Salt Lake City, and that’s mostly the story they’ll try to sell you.
With all candor…Beck is not the problem, either is ‘You Betcha Palin’, or Rush Limpballs…or any of the other simple-minded, self-centered, narcissistic, cold and heartless, phony degenerate asshats, who wholeheartedly and despicably taint and do great dishonor to this country and it’s revered icons exemplified by MLK…
…our real enemies are the sanctimonious low-info, couch potato, ‘I got mine, so fuck you, and don’t you dare touch mine’, gun-totin, bible thumpin, excuse me not, ‘white fat asses’, whose vision of America is spoonfed to them by the above mentioned toons! I mean how fitting that they have such a stellar cheerleader like Victoria Jackson!
But, they should probably be pitied for their lack of intelligence and foresight, as well as self-respect, because they have been totally played, gussied up, and put on display for all to see by the real Frankensteins of this movement and the rest like it…the Kochs, and the rest of the gluttonous, and ravenous MOTU whose soul purpose is to expose us all in their class wars and then discriminately, and systematically devour us all, leaving just a scant skeleton crew to clean up the mess…
if there is some type of hero or heroine that is rising up to lead the masses out of this snake pit and Dante-ish inferno, I sure wish they would hurry the hell up and get on the case /s
Here are my photos and some reflections on the Beck and Sharpton rallies (plus photos of people protesting Beck):
http://jotman.blogspot.com/2010/08/live-blog-photos-glenn-beck-and.html
That’s good I suppose. Much as I loathe our current president I’d be even unhappier to discover one day that we were stuck with a President Mittens.
The comparison to L Ron Hubbard is apt. Brigham Young just wanted to f*ck around, so he invented Mormomism. It’s rather amazing how both “religions” have taken off. The Scientologists get in trouble periodically for their abuse, but they keep hanging in there.
As stated, I think Beckerhead’s a religious fraud, but I was still rather “impressed” by what he did on Sat. I don’t agree, but it was audacious, I have to admit.
And one of the three better be Mandarin.
I don’t think they are the enemy – I think they are the instrument.
Agreed. The other group on the right who seem to do this a lot are the gun nuts. By “gun nuts”, I mean the people who won’t vote for anyone they don’t perceive to be on their side regarding gun control. While it’s a serious issue to those people, it’s by no means the only issue regarding government. Some day soon, they’ll be better able to guard their refrigerator boxes better than we will, but I’d prefer that we didn’t have government that was determined to bring that future about.
~~~Please, please write a diary of this. Begin here.~~~
Nite eCAHN and anyone I missed. Think I’ll just do a drive-by tonight. Splendid evening to all.
Very good points. Sadly many are not all that stupid, either. My family (who I use as examples constantly) are all very well-educated, very well traveled, and have no excuse for their narcissistic, entitled, selfish, racist ways, but there you have it.
A lot of it comes down to greed and selfishness. Plus the country’s in dire straits, but it’s much easier to blame someone else rather than take responsibility for solving problems, taking action, tightening your own belt, etc.
Howtrue. Most culinary schools now require a woking knowledge of at least three languages, usually French, Italian, and either Thousand Island or Ranch.
These San Francisco children are amazing! We speak two languages, you speak more.
I got a thorough dose of the fundie-but-not-insane branch of Christianity as a child. I was stunned when I visited SLC and took the Visitor Center tour and discovered that I knew the Bible better than any of the Mormon tour guides.
Romney looks to be about the best option on that side, too. At least he ran a state for a while without completely screwing it up, in contrast to the last governor who moved up to the White House.
Not necessarily. The world works on a few axes, not just the China axis. They actually aren’t the biggest exporter of goods. Germany is.
You have a point, but they are still responsible for the choices that they make. And not all of them are stupid or “low information.” Many are quite intelligent but selfish. So, in that sense…
All his photos are on Blogspot’s server, which Seminal doesn’t support. I’d recommend he write a short summary in the Seminal and link to his own blog.
They read and follow the “Book of the Mormon,” and the tour guides only learn certain verses from the Bible. Their “story” of Jesus is different from the “standard” Xtian version. Yeah, they don’t know it that well, but they want to say that they are just another version of Xtian, like Methodists or Baptists, etc.
Huckleberry might be more appealing to the fundies and he was also a governor, albeit of a state that probably ranks about 48th in per capita income. Of course Sarah was also a governor… sort of, for awhile.
I’m off to sleepy time, too. Night all. Good discussion.
And so: on it goes…
I dunoo or maybe not: Capitalism, imho, is evil. So is Satanism. opcit LaVey is a capitalist.
And what better excusr than ‘the devil made me do it”? Our presidient believes this, no?
Typos are fun!
Or, as I say, “there it is.”
That’s true, but Germans (and Austrians, for that matter) almost universally speak English. English documents on exported German goods are always in good, idiomatic English.
Can’t say that for China. On the other hand, Chinglish documents can be extremely amusing, if not frustrating.
One last thought: Huck’s not that popular with the Beckerheads bc he’s not a Prosperity Xtianist. Not a huge Huckabee fan, but he adheres more closely to the Gospels and hippie Jesus. YOu know: love one another, and as you treat the least among you, so you treat me. That does NOT resonate with the Beckerheads. Hence, they’re not fond of Huck: he reminds them about how craven and selfish they are. Can’t have that. Huck’s going nowhere.
Hate to get all tin-foil-hat about this, but as willful as they might be about their opinions, those opinions and their origins are not home-grown. They are spoon-fed to them by profiteers and political aspirants. That they eat what is put in front of them is not surprising, since, at least in a governance-contest between competing sides, neither side distinguishes itself. The vacuum created by lack of will on one side is bound to be filled by anyone who steps up and fills it.
Totally agree. Why are the dems staying silent?
A friend who is Catholic tells me that when he was a kid in parochial school, they never studied the Bible, either. They were taught the catechisms (sorry if spelling isn’t correct). That was back in the ’60s and ’70s.
H/T cujo359, good point. Thanks you for looking deeper than I did.
Goodnight, onitgoes.
I agree that the lack of intelligence is a very broad cloth, but I still stick by the deference to a seemingly vast lack of self-respect and conversely the respect for other citizens rights and dignity.
I have absolutely no problem laying blame at the alter of the MOTU, because I believe where they swill their greed and selfishness, the table is flush with the blood of the poor, the downtrodden, and the unfortunate amongst us…which is growing larger with everyday…
I am all for taking action, solving problems, and tightening belts on an already emaciated and hurting citizenry, if the MOTU and the corp elites releash their death grips and relinguish their addiction to power!
Uh, ’cause they’re on the same side? Dems and Republicans play good cop/bad cop with the voters. Which is which depends on an individual voter’s personal preference/prejudice.
Point is, they’re on the SAME side, serving the MOTU at our expense.
I have some experience there. I probably decline to put at least a couple of articles a week up at the Seminal thanks to this. Anything graphics-heavy just isn’t worth the trouble. I’ve suggested numerous times that they add the Blogspot server to the list, and never received an answer. It has the same copyrights statement thing that Flickr does.
Are you referring to what they can get on TV? Or is it that you think they just don’t ever bother looking deeply on a subject when it affects them directly? Or am I missing the point entirely?
The Roman Catholic Church has a long history of discouraging the reading of the Bible by laypeople. They are somewhat past that now, but where Catholics might have one Bible in their home, Protestants (especially of the Fundie strains) will have many, often many per household member.
One of the things Henry VIII did that really pissed off the Pope was having the Word of God read in the vernacular, and arranging for Tyndale to publish an English Bible translation. The Pope (correctly) saw that as revolutionary as well as threatening.
Most of my Catholic friends learned their religion at catechism, too. Other sects also use the catechical model… Lutherans and Anglicans are examples I’m familiar with.
What has amazed me over the years of my life has been the wholesale change in the Southern Baptist Convention. The basic belief of Baptists is supposed to be that the individual is competent to understand the scripture. But the SBC has gone from being a loose economic affiliation of congregations to having most of the trappings of a denomination. And the old Baptist view about scripture is becoming passe.
Good night folks.
*heh* Getting pushy eh, Lurk…? ;-)
Nite RF.
CUJO!
Margot!
CTuttle is upstairs!
Late, Late Night FDL: Let It Be
Hope you’re wrong….
Yeah, the RCC coined the ecclesiastical Latin caritas to translate the NT Greek ‘Agapé’ for the Vulgate (now ‘charity’ from French); they probably discouraged lay readers when they realized that caritas has the same linguistic root as ‘whore’.
Thanks, LooHoo. It is Late Night, isn’t it?
Goodnight, BC.
I think it’s some of both.
Creating and exploiting fear is the Republican party’s forte, and sitting with their thumbs up their kazoos is the Democrat’s response to it. Always. So the vacuum.
