She’s just recycling trash now. A couple years ago, Nooners had a column titled “The End of Placeness” in which she asked,
OK, quick, close your eyes. Where is Barack Obama from?
Two years later, apparently, it’s still Obama’s “otherness” that’s tripping him up.
When the American people have looked at the presidents of the past few decades they could always sort of say, “I know that guy.” Bill Clinton: Southern governor. Good ol’ boy, drawlin’, flirtin’, got himself a Fulbright. “I know that guy.” George W. Bush: Texan, little rough around the edges, good family, youthful high jinks, stopped drinking, got serious. “I know that guy.” Ronald Reagan was harder to peg, but you still knew him: small-town Midwesterner, moved on and up, serious about politics, humorous, patriotic. “I know that guy.” Barack Obama? Sleek, cerebral, detached, an academic from Chicago by way of Hawaii and Indonesia. “You know what? I don’t know that guy!”
He doesn’t fit any categories.
Shorter Nooners: Obama’s inability to conform to comfortable stereotypes (why can’t he act more like a Negro?) is driving his poll numbers down.

OK, quick, close your eyes. Where is Peggy Noonan from?
Ooh, ooh, I know, pick me, pick me!
Fuckeduplushanistan.
Peggy Noonan: Full of teh stoopid, batshit crazy, and completely full of shit. I know that woman!
Please. I know Oilbummer very well. He’s a neobliberal corporatist who doesn’t give 2 shits about the 99%. He’s a class warrior for the rich and the right wing. He’s made his intentions quite clear to all of us.
Very good!
Why then does Peggy Noonan hate him? And has from the get-go? You’d think she’d be sucking up to him if he was just Bush redux.
with frequent visits to Icanneverpleasedaddyenoughstan
Because he has dark skin and a D after his name?
So Nooner is upset that Oh Bummah! doesn’t know his place?
Well I for one know exactly where he is from and, regretfully, have found where is now, he was manufactured by a clique of corporate money men and is now doing their bidding as often as demanded.
I guess it’s infighting between the elites. It’s a fight over power. You know, who can screw us better. That’s my take.
thinking of our Miss Cokey, supposedly at opposite ends of the political dial but both saying essentially the same thing
Raginng alcoholism destroys one’s short-term memory.
Obama is:
Peggy doesn’t know anyone like that? No wonder she’s so boring. She needs to get out more.
He doesn’t fit any category for her, mostly because he’s an ambitious black man who has out gamed people like herself.
I’d say devious used car salesman…but hey, what do I know?
That’s probably close to the truth if not bang on.
A better group of ‘for me but not for thee’ class warriors and traitors to their country has yet to be found.
;>)
The woman’s repulsive. Her “sometimes its better to just keep walking” column branded her forever as a monster.
Obviously she doesn’t have a box with “Negro Presidents” written on it…
/s
Absolutely spot on.
Sort of like the servant who takes over the plantation operations. He may be doing better than master, but he’s still just a servant and out of his place. That’s what she really means – Obama is out of his/her class/category.
I suspect the D after his name would be enough.
A better answer might be: Why do I need to explain the thought processes of a crazy woman?
I would love – love an unvarnished public airing of the 4-generation Bush family totality broadcast into FOX-viewing homes.
The ensuing Scanners moments coast-to-coast would be a positive boon to the home cleaning, renovation and decoration industry.
Why, there might not even be enough ‘little pick-me-ups’ to save Nooners and the Upton Sinclair pundit class from such progress.
;>)
I do have a question.
Why have so many white folk, who voted for President Obama in 2008, become disallusioned?
It cannot be that they suddenly realized he is an African American – they knew that then. It cannot be that they were so easily influenced that they voted for him and then later watched a variety of talking heads who influenced them to change their minds. That would imply that they originally voted for Obama for very scant reasons.
It cannot be that he hasn’t been able to explain himself. If anything, his messages are crystal clear. He is a consumate communicator.
I do not want to think that it is his policies.
LOL!
I read B. Obama’s autobiography, Lessons From My Father, and I have to say I think the Man is Torn. Peggy has a point to make. We may not like her, but there is a dichotomy there that explains his Neediness for bipartisaness. That’s just my take, and I’m grateful for coming in at the end so people won’t yell at me.
Peggy Noonan should be in prison.
Nooners apparently gets the hots for guys she considers exotic. Different. From a foreign country in the Pacific. Who has trained himself to speak the empire’s language despite the fact of his provincial heritage of Kansans. A man of the world and the Village. Suave. Unflappable. Mysterious. Scary.
Are you willing, personally, to foot that bill?
I don’t think that’s what this is about. You’re playing a Low Card, there.
This is the kind of thread that makes me want to run away.
David Dayen has a fresh cross-post up: Grayson, Progressive Groups Join Call to Fire Alan Simpson
I certainly don’t discount the need, or perhaps even the neediness for bipartisanship – after all, there are for better or worse 2 (and only 2) American political teams of relevance to ‘play’ for, so the choice not to include one of them (whatever the ideological position one holds) is inherently self-defeating to the entire process.
I also understand practicalities, for example the majority ownership of BP that precludes anything save posturing and propaganda from the executive office regarding an oil spill with massive global connotations.
That said, the disconnect between what is solemnly promised to the public as an election strategy and what is done once one has arrived that fosters an impression of dealing against one’s own best interest – or perhaps even willfully deceiving those who voted for one in good faith regarding the true intentions, is becoming somewhat sharp.
;>)
I do not quite get your point. I think it is quite interesting what may put Ms Noonan in such spin. I haven’t read her take, but I have no reason to blieve that she has any more informed Obama diagnosis than anyone else. But I also have no reason to consider her an expert, as she seems to pose.
Oh, I wasn’t trying to be a cheerleader for Him. Not my style. But, I agree with you. I was just trying to make a bigger comment. Guess I failed. Won’t be the first time, and won’t be the last. I’m a survivor. :)
Right. Don’t you get tired of all the huffing and puffing here sometimes? It’s prolly just the heat that’s got me going. But, you do hear what I’m saying, don’t you? Enough pointing fingers without a heartfelt thought? And, people think the Others are the only ones who do that?
‘
‘No one escapes the Village, dear’
;>)
Cute shot. I don’t look like either of those, tho. Thanks for the reaching out, but I’m still bummed.
And, well, maybe I can escape. One never knows. Do one?
One must have compassion to achieve true understanding, demi. Don’t let worldly events or chat board dynamics steal that gift from you.
;>)
Asking “where is he from?” is just a decorous insinuation meant to echo the birthers’ libel.
:) Working on that. Thanks.
Dame Peggleston Nooningtonhampshire awakes with a snort from her drug and alcohol induced coma to blurt: but whaaaaar’s his birf certifikat??
Only riffing off a recent article that analyzed Obama’s failure to connect with the American people as being because he is neither black nor white, has lived outside the US, and people don’t know who he is. The article said that he was too “exotic” for Americans.
It was very much the same argument as Nooners’s “he doesn’t fit any categories”.
Yes, I pushed it pretty far.
Yup.
Now we know Peg’s true colors: in the dark, she sounds just like Orly Taitz
Preznits aren’t really worthwhile for Nooners until there’s a casket to hump.
He’s not white and he’s not a ghetto thug like I see on the tee-vee? He’s slightly more progressive than the Clintonian Neoliberal? How do I categorize him?! What racist/classist/political stereotypes will he fit into the best?
Nooners, stop being such a trashy overpaid drunk and perhaps the thoughts will begin to flow.
Yeah, but where’s Obama’s parents’ home in the Hamptons? Where do they holiday? Where can he trace his lineage?
And yet
Blue Texan,
Sure, Peggy Noonan is an idiotic blonde version of Sarah Palin, and yes, no intelligent person should take anything she says seriously, but Obama’s poll numbers are dropping because he is essentially keeping the Bush policies in place, which is not what people tricked themselves into thinking that they would be getting. Focus on the rightwing lunatics all you want, and try as you may neither you, or Jane Hamsher, or any other Obama Koolaid drinker can escape the fact that this guy sitting in the White House chair is every bit of a Bush as Bush himself………….
While Peggy Noonan is ridiculous with her categories disucusion, I do agree that we don’t know who Obama is. The3r’s such a disconnect between what he says and what he does. Nothing to do with where he’s from or who his parents are. He’s just hard to figure out.
Oh, yes I do. Esp. the snarky stuff. Somehow this one did not so strike me that way….I am more irked by the talk a la a Cokie and his exotic vacations (that would be Hawaii). I do think Obama not only has to face objective criticism, but some very veiled and not so veiled racial, etc bile. That makes me feel protective and troubled for some of our “peers.”
If you had been around at all, you would not include Jane as one who was taken in….
In fact, some of us were skeptical from the start, but wanted him to succeed in the way he presented himself in the presidential campaign. There are very few, if any, kool aid drinkers here. I guess that you haven’t been here very often, and you haven’t read the comments very carefully.
That sort of information costs money…big money.
;>)
This kind of attack is the one thing that could make me vote Dem in Nov – I want to send a message by not voting as we did in Brown – but the GOP is so damn awful it is hard to not just vote against the GOP (and hold your nose as you vote Dem – I am not there yet – but the nuts in the GOP are making it hard to not go there).
Aaaah, but what KIND of cars does he sell? Heh.
I thought the part about “got serious” was hilarious fiction. Too bad some people believed it. She also left out the drugs and ‘avoided war’ and loved to watch people die parts.
Talk is cheap, and surely your talk is very cheap. But when it comes right down to it on “ELECTION DAY” whom is the lever pulled for? Ask your little darling Jane whom she supports on election day and then come talk to me……………….
Are you serious? Wanted him to succeed in the way he campaigned? There must be something in the bandwidth on this website here at Firedoglake! Obama voted for and campaigned on the following legislation and issues:
1. Like Bush and McCain, Obama supported and/or voted for the first wall street bailout and is admininstering the following 1,000,000 additional banker bailouts
2. Obama promised to ratchet up the murder machine in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Guess what? He has launched more Predator Drone attacks in just shy of two yeas than Bush did in his entire 8 years as president
3. Voted for new FISA law, immunity for phone companies for illegal spying, and has continued CIA kidnapping programs.
4. Fervent free-trader. Obama is totally for outsourcing jobs because anyone who knows anything about “free trade” knows that its primary objective is to outsource American jobs. HE HAS DONE NOTHING ABOUT NAFTA, CAFTA, WTO, IMF, ETC. ETC. ETC. ETC……………
And you tell me you wanted this smorgasboard of junk policy to succeed? and you claim you and others here are not Obama Koolaid drinkers? Dream on pal, dream on………….
SKEPTICAL, SMEPTICAL………..If you voted for Obama in the 2008 election, you were fooling yourself and deserve the destruction that he gives you……………………..
Show some strength and force of will. Voting for the Democrats is like saying you hate the GOP driving the car over a cliff at 100 mph with no brakes but you’ll vote for the Democrats because they are only driving the car over the cliff at 90 mph with no brakes. Show some character and vote your CONSCIENCE……………
onitgoes,
A really good post. I like how you describe her………..
Dame Peggleston Nooningtonhampshire awakes with a snort from her drug and alcohol induced coma to blurt: but whaaaaar’s his birf certifikat??
I am sure that you are either trolling or jesting but I will bite anyway:
There is a kind of schizophrenia going on amongst progressives and the left in general. The Left and progressives are and always have been fractious-they are not, by constitution, as subject to authority and group-think as our authoritarian right wing brethren.
Anyone who paid attention to what Obama campaigned on(his concrete policy proposals-to the minimal extent that he even proffered such), must have realized that he was a centrist. The progressives leaped at the opportunity to support Obama because he was a magnificent projection figure, he pushed the buttons of progressives by echoing back what they wanted to hear- this was not disingenuous on his part, this is fundamental to political rhetoric-and because after years of near total political disenfranchisement they were downright desperate to have any presidential candidate who could embody the dreams and aspirations which had been so ruthlessly suppressed for 8 long years.
Progressives who demonize Obama now are often simply those exuberants who are now disillusioned. Yet equally often they are people taking tentative first steps in political courage and venting real, genuine built-up anger and frustration-which is a healthy response for people who have not given into the authoritarian impulse to stifle their own sense of powerlessness and their own anger at their elected officials and channel that anger, via projection, onto those in our society least able to defend themselves.
Obama is still the most thoughtful, intelligent, sensitive and articulate politician America has chosen in 30 odd years. It will take generations to undo the insanity of American politics, Obama is a nothing more than good first step in a better direction, not some David who is going to single-handedly slay Goliath. The anger directed at him, by progressives, is fundamentally a positive thing: the political disaffection, outright apathy and alienation have given way to a climate in which people actually dare to care and engage themselves. Where there is no bitter and withering criticism there is no engagement only passive acceptance, ie. victims. Passionate debate about serious political and social issues has never been a hallmark of American politics-trumped up rhetoric and meaningless platitudes and praying on the peoples fears more adequately describes American political culture. Maybe, just maybe, America is beginning to mature.
