Here’s Peter Wehner, linked approvingly by the homphobe K-Lo, trying to have us all believe that conservatives really don’t care much at all about teh gay.

my sense is that it’ll be a lot less of a big deal to conservatives than it might be to liberals like (just to choose one name at random) Frank Rich, for whom the political is also the personal. While it’s something that runs counter to the stereotype, most of the conservatives I know are largely to completely indifferent to a person’s sexual orientation. They are the kind of people who might even invite Elton John to perform at their weddings and not give a second thought to the fact that John is gay.

See? Even Rush loves the gays!

But if we take a larger sample than “conservatives Peter Wehner knows” – it turns out they care very deeply about sexual orientation.

More than three-quarters of Iowans planning to vote in Tuesday’s Republican primary say Iowans should have a chance to vote on changing the constitution specifically to ban gay marriage.

Rasmussen:

From a political perspective, Republicans are largely united on this issue [gay marriage] while Democrats are divided on this issue . For example, by a 78% to 18% margin, Republicans said the San Francisco wedding couples were not legally married.

Pew:

…more than seven-in-ten liberal Democrats (72%) favor same-sex marriage, while eight-in-ten conservative Republicans (81%) oppose it.

Human Events on the GOP’s almost lock-step opposition to repealing DADT:

House Democrats voted in overwhelming numbers last night to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that has for decades allowed gays to serve in the military. The only caveat is they aren’t allowed to broadcast what they’re doing in their government-supplied bedrooms.

Five Republicans voted to join the radical gay lobby in pushing passage of Nancy Pelosi’s remaining priority item before the elections.

And of course, there’s the 2008 GOP Platform.

Because our children’s future is best preserved within the traditional understanding of marriage, we call for a constitutional amendment that fully protects marriage as a union of a man and a woman, so that judges cannot make other arrangements equivalent to it.

And the Texas Republican Party’s platform.

We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases.

Guess Peter Wehner and K-Lo don’t know many conservatives.
