That implies he was not enrolled in school in Indonesia where his parents had listed his faith as Islam – and since Indonesian law requires you to list a faith so that the required by law one day a week of religious instruction can be in your faith, and since the parents obeyed the law and listed his faith as Muslim at both the Catholic school and at the Muslim school, the implication is in error.

The Catholic school, Fransiskus Assisis, where Obama first attended school, has published the enrollment documents that show that Obama enrolled as a Muslim, the religion of his stepfather (whom Obama says was non-practicing at that point – perhaps an atheist). I have not seen the Muslim school documents on the web but others that have report he was registered as Muslim in that school also.

As to “The Times has extensively debunked the Faux News/wingnut “madrassa” meme” – that is also mis-leading. “Madrassa” is مدارس, – an Arabic word coming from the Hebrew Midrash which is used by the Arabic speaking for any type of educational institution, whether secular or religious (of any religion) in most of the Arabic speaking world (madrasah, madarasaa, medresa, madrassa, madraza, madarsa, medrese etc. are all the same word). What the TIMES debunked was the idea that Obama’s school for the second two years – the ages 10 and 11 – of his life in Indonesia was structured like the schools that taught the Taliban in Saudi-financed madrassas in Pakistan – it did not teach Wahhabism, and indeed did not teach jihad wants you to be a suicide bomber.
