Soon-to-be-retired Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) (photo: kthread via Flickr)
The proposed nomination of Elizabeth Warren to the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an entity she envisioned and invented, has reached a higher likelihood in recent weeks. She met with David Axelrod and Valerie Jarrett about the job last week, and before that she met with bank lobbyists at the Financial Services Roundtable, interestingly enough. That suggests that the lobbyists increasingly view her as someone they’ll eventually have to deal with. While I don’t agree with Noam Scheiber that Jack Conway’s support of Warren is out of the ordinary – Conway’s running a populist campaign in Kentucky, and has highlighted consumer protection with his work stopping Medicare fraud as Attorney General – the fact that he’s unafraid to tout her shows the difficulty for any Democrat to block her nomination once it came down from the President.
Chris Dodd understands this. He told the Hartford Courant’s editorial board that he would support Warren if she were nominated. But he also tried to use every tool in the toolkit to argue against that prospect, sounding increasingly desperate that he cannot stop the nomination from happening.
As the campaign supporting the appointment of Elizabeth Warren to head the country’s new consumer financial protection agency kicks into high gear, Sen. Christopher J. Dodd said Tuesday he isn’t working to derail the appointment.
“My simple question about Elizabeth is: Is she confirmable?” Dodd said during a visit Tuesday with The Courant’s Editorial Board. “It isn’t just a question of being a consumer advocate. I want to see that she can manage something, too.”
But when pressed about where he stands, Dodd said: “If the president wants to name her and it goes through the hearing process, then fine, he’ll have my support. But she has to tell me more than just she’s a good consumer advocate or that’s she’s got a great campaign.”
In expressing “support” for Warren (actually, just support for Obama’s choice, in his construction), Dodd: 1) questions whether she’s confirmable, 2) intimates that she’s not a manager, 3) asserts that she’s merely a “consumer advocate” with a coterie of cheerleaders. Later, he says that “he doesn’t want to the confirmation process to drag on, especially if it runs into the next session of Congress.” When he wouldn’t have any control over it. Now that sounds like some support!
As Brian Beutler notes, the suggestion that Warren may not be qualified is a complete reversal from earlier remarks, when he said that “She’s qualified, no question about that.” It also contradicts what the White House has said consistently.
I think you can read the Dodd comments as desperate bargaining against a Warren nomination. Yet even he has to announce support if she gets the call.

I’m sorry I ever thought Dodd might be an acceptable presidential candidate. The man is scum.
In a way this reminds me of pre-’08 presidential primaries in which the Dem nominee was left too damaged by friendly fire to be viable in the general.
Hit the road, Chris, you’ve outlived any semblance of usefulness.
Dodd wouldn’t be hiding something that Warren may uncover, would he?
I second that emotion…the man is simply Chris Dud! He needs to move on and get out of the game!
Very interesting thought.mmmmm…..
I noted with interest that Warren had to meet secretly (no party’s were interested in publicizing the event) with the Big Bankster Lobbyists before she met with the White House. Red flags are all over the place and it would be irresponsible for us not to speculate what this means. Does the administration require prior approval of the Banksters before they nominate her? Did they demand specific concessions before they sprinkled her with unholy water? Did she comply?
As far as Dodd–it’s no big secret he is feathering his landing pad in the financial sector by advocating for them as his swan song in the Senate.
After the health care debacle, we should all be very wary of powerful interest groups and back room meetings.
No surprises here, is there, but thanks for the post. Like just about every other Democrat out there, Dodd flip-flops to Republican position when his back is to the wall. Ever noticed that?? And not just about Dodd.
It’s just like the despicable Harry Reid b.s. about the not-Mosque when spineless corporatist Harry was goaded by shrieking nutcase Angle.
These chumps all fold; every last one of ‘em.
Sure, Dodd’s all willing to act supportive of Warren when it’s not clear that she’ll stand a chance. But as things draw neigh, why then the flip flops begin. And believe me, Dodd, along with all the rest, know that us frackin r*tardz want Warren. She’s much more of a real progressive. Gawd forbid and heaven forfend. Can’t have that, now can we?
What a load of rubbish. ptoui!
There’s something almost frantic about Dodd re Warren. I really would like to know what’s going on with him.
I can even remember back when Blanche Lincoln, D-WalMart, was for the Employee Free Choice Act. You know, back when the Democrats were in a minority and it could never pass. When the Democrats took over and it looked like it could defeat a filibuster in the Senate, she sort of rethought her views and suddenly decided she opposed it.
Progs got behind Dodd when Dodd cleverly and tactically put himself on the correct side of the FISA debacle. Warrantless wiretapping and retroactive immunity for big telco was not cool with informed Democratic voters (all two million of us).
Turns out Dodd was and is a corporate puppet for the banks. Might as well be a Republican. I thought he was leaving. Hasn’t he retired yet?
Dodd is a perfect example of least worst. When you put him next to Lieberman you can’t smell the stench on him.
Dodd’s protestations do not pass the smell test for me. Dirty or not, Dodd is a Grade-AAA DeeCee Sleazebag. He can’t be out of the Senate soon enough to suit me.
And hey Chris: Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out…
Precisely.
Not really a flip-flop when the “Republican” position is the one they actually have held all along. Shorter Dodd, “Consumers don’t need no steenkin’ protection…”
Kinda like the exchange between Hunter Thompson and Nixon in Where The Buffalo Roam.
Thompson: “But sir, what about the doomed?”
Nixon: “Fuck the doomed.”
I missed that. Very suspicious. Where did you see that Warren met with The Bank Dons?
Either that, or he’s been promised a huge payoff if he manages to block her.
Adjusted.
I wish Ned LaMont was running as Dodds replacement. It would be kewl to have him glaring at Lieberman across the Senate floor and across the state of Connecticut.
Agreed on the feathering of the nest — I was naively excited when the FinReg first started up with Dodd at the helm — especially because of his stand on FISA way back when and he was not running for relection. Like a fool, I thought the bribes/donations would not affect his moving the legislation through, but then realized as it went on, he is a selfish bastard like all the rest. Tom Daschle and his million dollar take lobbying should have been my first clue.
The FinReg was just one more kick in the butt to Liberals and Progressives. But Bobby Gibbs thinks I should be happy and just STFU.
Right into a numbered offshore account.
My sense is that Timmy’s leaving Treasury after the midterms, and Dodd’s angling for the job. And that he doesn’t want the headache that is Warren at CFPB.
It is in David’s post, followed by the word “interestingly.” Also, I came across an article at McClatchy, you remember them? They were the guys right about the run-up to Iraq, asking all the right questions and stuff.
Dodd doesn’t want to be the Red Stapler guy with his desk in the basement next to the cartons of toilet paper when he goes to work for Morgan Stanley.
Yes, we’ve all seen this phenomenon over and over. What no one has managed to identify yet is why they do it. Why are they afraid of doing the right thing?
The strength of the position has been greatly compromised – cloaked within the bureaucrazy of the super crooked MIC treasury department. Interesting that the bank Dons are still uncertain of her discretion.
Dodd is actually pretty good in most areas, accept for financial regulations. He feels the serfs who live in the United Feudal States of America need kind and benevolent propertied overlords to dole out just enough providence to toil in our traces, yet not enough to energetically protest.

In their world, they are doing the “right thing” in all senses of that phrase. Get with the program! (snark). The Doddster is representing the so-called “neo Liberal” point of view, aka the “new” Democrat, aka “really it’s just being a Republican.”
It’s been happening gradually for a while, but they all jumped the shark and screwed the pooch when they got in full power in 2008. This is not a bug; it’s a feature.
Go back and read OilFieldGuy @8 re Betty Crocker (made up by a corporation) Lincoln (D-WalMart). They’re all Republicans now and in the thrall of our corporate overlords.
I just threw up in my mouth a little bit…
Internal blogwhore:
Is Chris Dodd Qualified to Judge Elizabeth Warren’s Qualifications?
Dodd works for David Rockefeller, just like Karl Rove.
Assume (always) that every newly ginned-up controversy or talking point is ALWAYS created by one Karl Rove – and assume further, that Rove operates solely at the behest and pleasure of one David Rockefeller.
If you remember nothing else, remember this.
Assume that it was these two who schemed to rig the outcome of the Citizens United case – enabling unlimited money to flow to Karl – to usurp the GOP entirely – to fulfill Rockefeller’s Orwellian goals.
Nothing else can explain the disreality as succinctly. Dodd is just part of the Rockefeller machine.

I suppose this is an good a time as any to remind ourselves that all the wiretap and invasive tech & tools used by BushCo are available and (probably) used by ObamaCo for political ends within The Homeland.
Vurp
Anyone who reads this article and continues to defend Dodd is a fool. It is clear to anyone where Dodd is heading after he leaves office, and he doesn’t want have to deal with someone like Warren. He’d rather have a stooge in there who will do his bidding when he comes a calling!
Surely that is not in reference to the alleged sexcapade involving Dodd and the shetland pony?
Dodd has his future bank lobbying gig to think about.
I wonder if these clowns in DC think that we just don’t notice what they are doing. I guess it’s that bubble thing.
They know most people don’t notice and believe those that do are powerless to do anything about it because money = speech and their friends talk a LOT.
The fact that it would require an act of Congress to turn off the corporate cash spigot and they will never act against their personal interest pretty well seals the nation’s fate.
Dodd and Frank are the two biggest whores for the financial industry on Capitol Hill, no surprise really because both are chairs of financial services committees.
Margaret has it exactly right:
It is why winning or losing elections, staying in Congress or leaving it doesn’t matter to these guys, and why they keep pushing toxic sludge to the very end, because the gravy train of sellout’s welfare is waiting for them.
This is part of Dodd’s post-Senate resume-building, to obtain as many Board of Director memberships as he can for himself and his wife.
Wall Street BankCo’s to Dodd: “Jump!” Dodd’s reply: “How high?”
Don’t forget Schumer…
No. I think it is purely personal. She pissed him off at some point, and this is pay-back. Never underestimate the small-mindedness of our elected officials, especially those in the Senate.
Not a chance of Dodd’s replacing him. If it’s anyone, it will be Summers.
Nice post, DDay. Bonus points for style.
