If you want to know what’s really driving all of this KEEP MOSQUES OUT OF MANHATTAN!!1!!1! craziness from the right, here you go.
BYSTANDING CONSTITUENT: He’s [President Obama] a Marxist! He’s a Muslim Marxist.
KING: He’s at least a Marxist. And he surely understands the Muslim culture.
CONSTITUENT: He surely does. That’s where he grew up with, that’s his culture.
KING: He doesn’t have an American experience. He does not have an American experience.
CONSTITUENT: He didn’t grow up in America.
KING: Mmhmm.
For Teatards like Steve King (R-IA) and these Iowa winguts, “Muslim” means foreign, un-American, other.
And not in a good way.

About Firedoglake
The folks in Hawaii are always so very happy when mainland folks tell them they’re not “real Americans”
Steve King is a racist jackass who, let me assure you, does not speak for everyone in Iowa. The sooner this pig is out of a job, the better for everybody.
Obama grew up in Muslim? I always thought it was Kenya. I’ll bet anything it was in the suburbs of Muslim. That’s where all the hard-core Marxists live…
Ground zero is an atomic term or a propaganda term not a description of NYC false flag attack but it’s a nice diversion of the truth.
What have pigs ever done to you that you would insult them like that! For shame!
Speaking of cranks, I rather enjoyed this one…
The Oily Taint is back! Get down, get funky!
Why should I have actual evidence and facts to back up my conspiracy porn? It fits my worldview and it sounds right and reinforces my own ideological prejudices. Isn’t that good enough?
That sounds oddly familiar…
I wonder what her next move will be….since she’s pretty much out of moves. Pony up the $20G’s with money raised through the “Orly Taitz Defense Fund?” Whatever happens, we can be sure it will end up looking like “The Full Employment Act for Comedians.” Get your popcorn.
And I’m sensing that they (wingnuts) see some connection between Marxism and Muslims.
Let me guess. They both start with an M and sound similar.
That’s plenty of proof, if you’re a raging bigot with the approximate IQ of a cucumber.
Heh.
Can you believe these crazy conspiracy therorists?
Next they’ll be babbling about terror babies.
The Tea Party would LOVE the Taliban if they were christian militants massacring people to force the world to accept biblical law and biblical truth.
Hell, they’d rename themselves the TeALIBAN and support theocratic christianity.
They’re just haters that muslims get their own theocracies in the middle east and they haven’t had any success in turning america into a christofascist theocracy.
So do M&M’s, hmmm…
Ah Ha! Therefore M&M’s are a tasty way of communicating your support of the Marxist and Muslim agendas!
Fruitcake aspires to become as nutty as these people.
Why isn’t the mainstream media shredding this guy for his lies and racism? Imagine how Edward R Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Daniel Shorr, or even a young Dan Rather would have taken these rightwing liars on, and how they would have had their careers ended for such baseless smears. Journalists are a sad lot these days and the corporate media is no longer a honest broker. There is no SHAME is America any longer. There is no ethical center that guides either elected officials or the reporters that cover them.
LOL!
Someone should print up a big sign in front of their next tea party then:
Conservatives
Communists
That’ll make their heads explode.
A distraught cucumber just called and asked “What did I ever do to EDP? That’s cold, man!”
Don’t these people who call themselves Christian even realize that they are IDENTICAL to the Muslims they fear and hate? They even share a deity. Talk about self loathing…
There you go again, insulting cucumbers, which I happen to like.
Looks like I owe you a drink. Would you consider gazpacho instead, since it has cucumbers in it?
Scarborough stuck up for the
mosquecommunity center?! Knock me over with a feather.Gazpacho it is then.
To be clear, the fundie Xtians I know would tell you that you are infested by Satan by claiming that Xtians (esp real ‘murkins) and Muslinz “share a diety.” Xtians have been carefully taught by Doug Coe’s C Street “Family” (and by Pat Robertson’s 700 Club, etc) that the Muzlinz worship the Devil only. No onez but Xtians are “worshipping God.” The rest of the rabble, no matter how religious they appear, are only worshipping Satan in his many guises.
Hmmm….I wonder if that includes Jewish people and if so, how does that square with conservatives defending everything Israeli?
Slidin’ it down the bar in your direction.
The corporate-owned media and politicians are doing what their corporate overlords pay them to do: distract the “small” people with stupid junk, as well as pit the “small” people against one another. It’s all about distracting the “small” people from who is really ripping them off (eg, the corporations and the billionaires) and from realizing how much they’ve been lied to. And it works!
I have not seen any news about the relatives of 9/11 victims speaking out about this Muslim Center one way or another. Does anyone know if they have?
Maybe Mika’s dad phoned and called him “astonishingly ignorant” again.
Everyone knows the fundies are defending Israel only cuz they know all the Jews will die in the rapture (or something like that).
A big feather or a small one?
Dya think he tells his daughter the same thing on a regular basis, because Mika is so stoopid it hurts.
It would be hilarious if some of them opposed it to watch people like Ann Coulter use that as a justification to oppose it’s construction.
Yeah….I never understood that. Evil people….going to hell….but while they’re here they can do no wrong. WTF?
Leen had this quote in his post at 57 in the training wheels thread, but I couldn’t find a link.
“9/11 Families Group Announces Support for Islamic Cultural Center in Lower Manhattan
September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows strongly supports efforts to bring an Islamic Cultural Center to lower Manhattan, near the Ground Zero site. We believe that welcoming the Center, which is intended to promote interfaith tolerance and respect, is consistent with fundamental American values of freedom and justice for all…”
Oh made it a big one, then I’ll add it to my boa when you’re done knocking me over. *g*
Yes, it does include Jews, but speaking for my fundie family only, the carefully tip-toe around the “Jewish issue” because they are in the northeast and happen to know too many Jews and have Jewish friends that they like. But if you pin down my family members, they will be forced to admit that all Jews are going to hell bc they are not “worshipping god.”
Read Tim LaHay’s horrid “Left Behind” series (well, no, don’t torture yourself doing that. they are some of the most horribly written crap out there) to learn why they all venerate Israel. To be brief, it’s about the book of Revelations (it’s all about the Old Testament & Revelations for this crowd. The Gospels have little to do with their belief system, despite their professed love of Jesus) and some stupid Bible verse that says something about the Jews living in Isreal for the second coming to happen (seriously). Other than that, these fundies could give a stuff about Israel and the Jews. It’s all about them and their weird beliefs.
I’ll bet he doesn’t send her any birthday or holiday cards with WRITING on them…
There was an interview I heard, probably democracynow, with some woman who has a position of authority in the community center, which said they were reaching out to 9/11 survivor families to have a dialogue. I’ll see if I can find it.
Yes, it would. The relatives received a lot of press attention and probably would again if they were speaking out against this so I think they are probably not, at least as a group. It has, after all, been nine years and people move on from their grief.
You made me laugh.
Thanks very much. I am so glad to hear this.
No, the Jews and all the rest of the miserable devil-worshipping debased horrid sinners will be left behind to suffer horribly once the godly Xtians are raptured away from the planet (dibbs on their left behind stuff).
However, the Jews have to be in Isreal for the rapture to occur. What happens to the Jews after the rapture doesn’t matter to the fundies. It’s all about them.
OK, found the link. Sorry about that.
All I want to know about the Left Behind series of products is how do I claim some rich person’s stuff when they are raptured up out of their shoes? Is there a waiting list? Is it just whomever is closest at the time? Do wills still apply since technically they aren’t dead? These are important things to know.
Here it is.
I hope you weren’t biting a cucumber at the time. :)
“Muslim” is what they say in place of the N-bomb:
http://www.rfkactionfront.com/2008/04/bowlingual-translating-republican-code.html
Don’t apply logic to any of this. That will make your brain explode. It’s all about manipulation by the PTB. the PTB want Isreal for a range of reasons often discussed here. So they’ve neatly manipulated the fundies and other assorted Xtians in the USA (at least) to go along with that plan in the name of Jeebus (and some random Bible verses).
Personally, I can’t wait for the rapture, to get rid of all those annoying fundies. World will be a much nicer place once they go to their just rewards.
Thanks, eCahn.
Well, I called dibbs on their stuff a long time ago, but if you’re very nice to me, I may be induced to share… ;-)
I try to encourage them to rapture themselves and beat the rush but then I’m accused of not having their best interests at heart. Gee, ya try to do somebody a favor….
No $***! Much as I hate to admit it, as it includes most of my family, I would not be sad if they all got raptured outta here really soon. Win-win: they get to go to heaven or whatever, and the rest of us enjoy peace on earth (with their constant idiotic whining and complaining finally stopped). Rapture can’t come soon enough for me!
I’m not sure they have anything I want.
I’m not greedy. The Texas fundies’ stuff is enough for me. :)
Gee, here I am thinking only of how nice the world will be once they’re gone, and you & Margaret can think only of the material benefits. *g*
It works because we are so busy congratulating ourselves on our insights we have no time to engage the other. It’s gay marriage, offshore drilling, health care and any other issue that comes down the pike. No discussion, no attempt at persuasion, just two groups throwing rocks at each other.
I heard about this, too, so thanks for the link.
The way these people are behaving is shameful and disgusting but predictable.
It’s kind of hard to engage someone that lives in a world where the sky is green and the grass is blue and water isn’t wet.
I’ve tried. It just doesn’t work well.
Hey, I can use the peace too! But the peace is something we will all share and enjoy and it will be conducive to maintaining that peace by getting all of the messy business of who gets their stuff out of the way in advance.
What’s behind it (“the Conservative Opposition to the “Ground Zero” [sic] Mosque”) is bitter envy for not being born early enough to burn and break Beatles records or to hate and try to destroy Muhammad Ai.
Yes, that happens, too. You’re right. I do my best to engage in meaningful discussions about these issues with the conservatives that I know. It’s slow going, but I do my best.
The media, though, is not engaged in anything meaningful, as we used to know it, in terms of reporting “news” with a modicum of objectivity. The corporations are engaged in publishing propoganda only.
It’s fine for conservatives to demonstrate this way. The issue is that the media presents their point of view as completely valid, and as something that has real merit. and that these people should be taken quite seriously as being victims of some dastardly plot. And their assertions that Obama is not American, is a Marxist, is a Muslim, etc, are taken seriously, listened to with great reverence and never once questioned.
I don’t think that’s the fault of the left, especially as the left has a very small “voice” these days. So it’s looking at who benefits by these viewpoints and following the money.
That’s a bit of false equivalency. Though there are rational people and rock throwers on both sides of any issue, it’s been my experience that there is a MUCH greater percentage of rock throwers as opposed to rational people on the conservative side and vice versa. If the ratios were similar, we would do nothing here but defend Obama and demagogue the right and clearly that isn’t the case.
I’m all for planning in advance, myself! heh
Yet they had no problems with Cassius Clay.
I think that sign in the picture in BT’s post says it all.
Islam=Terror Hatred Anti-Semitism Violence
We aren’t at war with extremists, we are at war with the religion of Islam.
Assholes.
Somewhere else I heard that the majority of those polled in the other boroughs were against the ‘mosque,’ but not Manhattanites. I noticed right away that they farther away from Manhattan, the more scarder peeps were of terrorism (as a general rule; please don’t take my remarks personally). I once asked a man from MN why he was worried about terrorism, and he looked at me like I was nuts to ask such a stupid Q.
Besides which, Jane Hamsher has been known to reach out to the Tea Party (and some have gotten upset with her), but I’ve never ever seen any conservatives reach out to liberals.
It is a false equivalency. The small tiny portion of the media that can be called “left wing” does engage in some rock throwing, but they also do their homework and report responsibly on at least some issues. There is propoganda at MSNBC, but many at FDL are quick to point it out and decry it.
I’ve never ever seen any conservative decry the propoganda that RushGlenn pump out daily. Not once.
nm. Memory failed me again.
David Dayen has a fresh cross-post available: Social Security Coalition Whipping Members of Congress on Pledge to Protect Program
A lot of people – conservative and liberal alike – drank the Kool Aid that said we all had to be constantly scared of terrorists 24/7/365. I had fairly liberal/leftie friend who moved away from San Francisco a year or 2 after 9/11 bc she was terrified that SF was next and that they’d fly into the Golden Gate Bridge and she’d be “stuck” in SF, and so on.
Frankly I was pretty surprised by her reaction and feelings at the time, but I do think many citizens have been successfully propogandized into being scared of terrorists (not that there aren’t some issues of concern, but still… ). It’s all hype and propoganda, but it has been sadly effective.
Do you really think you can have a reasonable discussion with someone who supported the center in 12/09 and demagogues it now? Really.
The key here might be progressive Muslim-Americans. Ever read a news story about one group blowing up a mosque in Iraq. It’s not American Tea Party doing the dirty work. I’d worry that this could be a target of Radical Islam.
25 peeps killed by terrorists in U.S. last year; 4 in Israel. Be afraid. Be VERY afraid.
Exactly! And since they control every “debate”, we would have heard something, anything about one of them reaching out to persuade rather than just stirring the pot and turning up the heat. Every Sunday, one can hear “the left does it too” ad nauseum but it’s just not true. People say that the Hitler references about Obama are fair because a few anti war demonstrators called Bush “BusHitler”, so that justifies Newt and InSannity and O’Reilly and Carlson and Rush and Ingraham and all the rest comparing Obama to Hitler? Sorry folks. Not one commentator who is perceived as liberal or conservative compared Bush to Hitler. Not one. Not even Randi Rhodes.
Yep and over 30 killed in the US by dog bites. Keep kennels OUT of “ground zero”!
EDIT: And I think every one of those victims were killed by right wing terrorists, not Islamic ones.
Wasn’t it Cheney or W who said words to the effect that if we’re “afraid” of terrorists and “change” what we’re doing, then we’ve “lost” by “submitting” to their agenda?????
Prolly more died of acne than terrorism.
Agreed. It’s bad enough that citizens identifying with the Tea Party continue to compare Obama to Hitler and Stalin, but that’s their right. That many R politicians and pundits and other assorted rightwing “leaders” do the same – and act as if it’s true – is where I have a big problem. Like Eric Cantor standing sanctimoniously under that Dachau sign that compared HCR reform to a Nazi concentration camp. Seriously: you’re gonna trot out some equivalency of that with some randome leftie calling Bush Hitler? Please.
And who were the terrorists in the USA killing people here? Rightwingers killing leftists? Like Scott Roeder killing Dr. Tiller? And how all those good rightwing Christians stood up to cheer on Roeder and agree with him murdering Tiller? You mean those killings in the USA?
Just wait until they all find out everyone arrives…naked! Wow, how will they tell the rich ones from the poor ones..LOL…
It would take too long to sit here and name each one of them but the elected conservatives, the conservative pundits and the conservative writers who have compared Obama to Hitler must number in the thousands. Let somebody so much as squeak the name Hitler in the same paragraph as the name of the next Republican president though and there will be condemnations from congress and the firestorm will last for months!
I believe ther’s an Amish Market at the other end of the block, why is no one protesting them?
Oh certainly. When a R is next elected POTUS, the rightwing will line up to lecture us dfh’s daily on how we must never ever be disrespectful to the Commander in Chief, blah blah blah. And RushGlenn will make up lots of lying lies to feed to the minions to make the upset with lefties bc of made-up horrors that we’ve committed.
It’s connected to how righties all yelled at us lefties constantly about “supporting the troops” when W was POTUS, but I have yet to hear one contard say “support the troops” once now that BHO is POTUS. Ever notice that one?
IOKIYAR, and being hypocritical and having double standards is a conservative artform.
And so: on it goes…
They kind of know that from the crappy “Left Behind” books, but I’m guessing the rapture crowd believes that the very wealthy (and hence, more deserving and better) will be clothed in more expensive looking robes as they roam amongst the clouds. Plus the wealthier ones will get harps of gold, while the poorly clad lowly serfs will only play harps of wood.
Or something like that… gotta have a pecking order…
I have. The silence is especially deafening when Republicans vote to cut funding for things like PTSD treatment and so forth.
Coiffed pubic hair?
I have asked conservatives that I know why they aren’t out protesting at Amish Markets and the like bc many Amish don’t speak English. They speak a form of German, and they don’t really mingle in “regular” American society.
That said, I personally have nothing against the Amish, and they certainly will lend a hand to anyone who needs it.
But it is interesting how conservatives conveniently leave the Amish out of their “English is our language; everyone must speak it” discussions.
Don’t ‘spose it has anything to do with the fact that the Amish are white…. ????
Well, to be honest, I think they were willing and did cut those types of funds even when Bush was still in office.
It’s what they do and it’s who they are – once the troops are no longer usable and damaged goods, they go to the trash pile.
Yeah but typically those things weren’t reported or were reported as “Democratic lawmakers can’t agree on legislation” or some such drivel.
Conservatives also used to lecture us about never every speaking a negative word against Bush because he was a war-time POTUS, and even constructive criticism was giving aid and comfort to our enemies. Notice how quick conservatives were to begin dissing BHO? Lessee, I think it started about 1 nanosecond after they called the election for BHO.
BHO is a war time POTUS, but conservatives have done nothing but mock, deride, diss and complain about him.
IOKIYAR. Hypocritical much? Enjoy giving all that “aid and comfort to the enemey” much? How am I supposed to take all of the false equivalencies seriously???
Yes, but have you heard one conservative say “Support the Troops” even one time since BHO was elected? Just ONE saying it ONE time????
I have not. Not once. The troops got tossed even further under the bus once BHO was elected. Not that the conservatives ever really “supported the troops” in any “real” way. It was all jinogistic propoganda. But still… the hypocrisy on that one should be noted.
Any intellectually honest person cannot and should not take them seriously. We were called “un-American” for the merest suggestion that Bush might be controlled by Cheney or that Rummy was entirely clueless about the realities in the Middle East. Secret battle strategies can now be debated on cable news and suddenly it’s every citizen’s duty to question how the war is being waged. Naked hypocrisy.
It would be helpful to have reasonable discussions with conservatives, and I have a few friends where such a discourse is possible. Such conservatives, though, are unusual in that they, too, question things and can see some of the hypocrisy… and are dismayed by the lunacy of the Tea Party. But, sadly, those conservatives are few and far between.
Clearly the rightwing media has set up the situation to encourage conservates to be bullying victims who refuse to listen to anything that is slightly different from their marching orders from RushGlenn. The right has been effective in shutting down any reasonable discourse. And this is in tandem with shutting down any reasonable (and real) compromise in what is laughingly called “federal gov’t.”
Conservatives are enabled and encouraged to engage in dysfunctional bullying behaviour because it works in shutting down the means of reaching across party lines to really collaborate against the true PTB, who are robbing this nation blind. It is a sad truth. Painting the picture that the “left” is exactly the same is just buying into the corporate propoganda and enures solely and only to the benefit of the wealthy and the powerful. Very sad and very frustrating.
You know who also taught hate racism and fear? He was Austrian, and had a Charlie Chaplin mustache. But he wasn’t funny.
I understand you can make a contract now and get an advance to take care of pets of those who expect to be raptured out. It’s legal too I hear. I’m putting out an ad.
This has nothing to do with the Islamic Cultural Center and everything to do with pandering for votes. They might as well call it the Muslim Strategy.
This just in: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is a fucking bigot. Film at 11.
Well, it’s pretty much all been said. Better to laugh than cry (or scream) so here’s the daily show on Islamophobia, Stewart style.
Newt Gingrich doesn’t want to be lectured about religious liberty when there’s not a single church or synagogue in Saudi Arabia.
http://www.newslook.com/videos/240422-ground-zero-mosque-update?autoplay=true
Wake up people! This shit has nothing to do with Muslims, Christians, or terroists; this is about getting brainwashed people’s votes. Billionare’s control the morons by any means possible.
I’m not sure how it would work. I know one conservative. Our conversations are pleasant enough, but I don’t see either of us changing our minds any time soon. It doesn’t need to be face to face. It would be easier on the internet. The thing is we agree on more than we disagree, the bailouts, too big to fail, perhaps even the wars.
I’m cool with the Mosque.
I am a little irritated about this all coming to a head at election time. There’s a pattern of controversial issues in which constitutionality and public opinion differ coming up right before elections, and those controversial issues consistently play in favor of the republican electorate. The old saying of “timing is everything” does count and these suspiciously-timed _coincidences_ start to get old after a while.
It’s not like there are no republican-Muslim connections. The Islamic Institute was founded by Republicans. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1571/is_45_17/ai_80681417/ There *are* republican Muslims. I’m very cool with the Mosque, but how much creativity would it take for prominent republicans to contact their established Muslim political connections and say “Hey, how about trying to get a Mosque on your lot that’s a couple blocks from ground zero” a few months before a big election? They know the vast majority of liberals will never think about pushing the issue(s) past the election, but instead will rush like moths to flames to defend highly controversial (yet constitutional) issues like a ground zero Mosque, only to get pummeled by public opinion in the upcoming election, when it should be in their interests (if they’re really democrats) to push this one *after* the election.
It gets old after a while. What part of “it’s a team” do people not understand? Our political leaders need to understand that controversial issues (i.e. constitutionality and public opinion differ) are best and most effectively promoted *after* we win elections, not right before elections.
