we gotta heat wave forecast for starting friday. may hit triple digits in portland — i hope it doesn’t get warmer than the low 80′s here on the coast. tonight, however, i’m in long sleeves and fleece
I mean it’s not like we break usually break a hundred for weeks at a time. But you know this place – this looks like the Indian-Summer Novembers we have.
its been strange up here. astoria has only hit its average temp 4 times since july. those indian summers in october can be blazing but yeah, i know that november….
Harsh news tonight. Mr. Openhope got laid off yesterday. After 20 yrs. No severance, no thanks of a grateful company owner who won’t struggle financially. They’re expression of concern for his amazing tenure was to lay him off before tomorrow. Tomorrow, everyone still employed will find out that their insurance policies flipped overnight from 80-20 company pays, to 20-80 company pays.
So, we get to Cobra in at 80-20. Feels warm and cuddly.
The good news is I didn’t buy that used car I’ve been researching like a maniac and focusing in on. One more week and I would have bought one. 6 months rent is sounding better than a new ride.
In the glass half full, lower middle-class scenario…our’s just got dumped in the toilet.
The goofy thing is he gets to keep his air miles as a perk!!!!!! 2 free tickets anywhere in the U.S.
We endured this when Neil Bush and his cocaine cowboys crashed the West with their Savings and Loan Robbery.
We’ll figure out the next step.
Good thing I’m a passionate herb gardener. Just Say Now. :]
also good planning on your part stocking your larder for the winter. have you checked into selling some chickens? when is the next batch due for culling?
I can run a waiting list for my chickens. Everyone wants to buy one for $30. I would do that if people picked up their chickens LIVE. Like in other third world countries.
We’re going to get unemployment for however long that happens, Mr.’s applying for Soc. Sec. Got enough going on to hold for awhile.
The third thought on my “oh,fuck” list was; we have a tithe we pay monthly to FDL, ACLU, Amnesty International, The Nation and assorted calls for cash.
It has ripples.
portland is forecast to be in the 90′s starting fri and really warming up to the 100′s mon and tue with back to the 90′s wed. i carry my own personal summer around with me — i don’t need extra :)
Thank you all for your empathy. It feels good.
On the bright side, we’re no longer beholden to the Mormans as we’ve been for 6 years.
Now I can research whether they signed our dead relatives’ souls onto their list.
At a small show I saw him at once in a church up in Georgetown (hwy 49 between Auburn/Placerville) he said he retired on the royalties! Gave him time to do his OWN music!!! *G*
How hot is it where you are? Scanned up the comments for a weather report but must have missed it. Makes me feel guilty for the cool, rainy weather we’ve had, followed by a gorgeous 73 day. Walked the beach hunting agates. Not a good day for agates. I won the Booty prize with 2 small ones. Both super smooth 1/2 teardrops[ flat on one side], one gray, one white. A rare shape.
Got to be an awareness in there somewhere. Damn. It’s not easy being atheist!!!!
Doin’ well. Just got home from a trip to Santa Monica Mountains, a national park building at King Gillette Ranch that they want to turn into a visitor center.
Agates as in agates that were so prized in marble playing when I was a kid? Called them ‘aggies’ and they were beauty’s with swirls of browns, oranges, reds and muted shades of sames.
It was in the 90s, with high humidity. I try not to look at the thermometer outside, but heard on TV that the “heat index” made it 104.
Don’t feel guilty!
I love picture jasper, a kind of agate. And malachite.
These are raw agates common to Pacific Northwest beaches. I have no idea if they have a purpose beyond jars of Found Agates. It’s a wonderful yet pointless hobby. Agate hunting. We also had an incredible natural area for ameythist { shit, Dictionary’s not my friend] purple quartz crystals. Public Works blew it up for road gravel. One of the few natural spots in the WORLD. Could have been a great roadside attraction. Thankfully, we got a few before they blew.
As a kid, we did the same in Colorado with quartz crystals and garnets.
It’s got to be the Hunter/Seeker thing.
The building we looked at used to be a stable, it’s in pretty rough shape; decrepit, needs lots of fixin’ up and TLC. Now inhabited by bats and spiders, and the grounds are frequented by squirrels, rabbits, gophers and rattlesnakes.
Every change opens doors of opportunity…more tome with Mr. Openhope and travel. What else? Maybe we could have an openhope post on the possibilities? Maybe a biz adventure/ Who knows…
Definitely a change of financial planning. I know the sweat lodge for some spiritual inspiration…there must be some atheist spirits around.
I’m so sorry for that insufferable heat level!!!!
Picture Jasper is one of my favorites. Took a class in jewelry long ago and went wild for Jasper as a semi-precious stone tough enough to take an amateur’s torch.
Hey, Bigbrother. Peace.
There are as many sweat lodges open to atheists as there are churches. For a reason.
We’re the ones in the back row saying,” Wait, what?? Who said that’s the Real Story? How many rewrites were there, exactly?”.
I’m not a person to post. It takes everything I have to write letters-to-the-editor and they don’t write comments.
No bay for me today was visiting Directors of CAPSLO, Social Services, People’s Self Help Housing and CA Coastal Commission. Making appointments for formal collaboration agreements. Got bad news from lawsuit partners and good stuff from SLO City Planning on the safe parking for homeless. Lost my equanimity for a couple hours. OOPS.
Thank you for the spelling!!! I hate misspelled words. I cringe to see I’ve written Who’s instead of Whose. Very compulsive/obsessive.
Damn academic parents.
they really are pretty — i still regret not buying a huge amethyst ring back in the early 90′s. if it had been in silver instead of yellow gold, i wudda snatched it right up
I want to say more comforting words openhope, but I also get angry at times like this. I know that they say stuff like, “this is a great opportunity” God opens windows closes doors, etc. etc. But when I see my friends getting hurt like this it angers me. And I know who I want to direct that anger at.
It’s the people in our power elite who do not see the connection between their financial gambling and sending jobs away and your pain.
I used to think that people would blame Bush and Cheney and the right greed rules for this pain we are feeling now, but as we see, many people won’t connect the dots.
I suppose succeeding is the best revenge, but right now I know how much this can anger you as it does me. I don’t know how I can help, but if you want your media message to be about this employment situation, you know I will help you will all my skills.
Silver is dear to my heart. The only gold I own is a tiny antique pin with a perfect turquoise center. Given to me by a long time friend of my parents. Margit. She was active in the French Resistance, sent to a Labor Camp and escaped.
The man who sponsored her entry into the U.S. was an incredible man. A kind, intellectual doctor who had a profound affect on my mother’s escape from blue collar to the world of Art,Music,Poetry. He and his wife encouraged her exploration and mastery of oil painting. He also guided her through Tuberculosis years later, at 34,pregnant with 2 small daughters.
My parents met Margit and her dear husband Robert in New York, as newlyweds trying to sell their humorous card designs to printers. Mom did art, Dad did words. After WW2.Going to school on the G.I. bill. Never knew the connection to Dr. K.for frigging YEARS into their relationship. It’s a small world.
I wear that gold pin with a smile. To Margot’s bravery and a salute to Dr. K. His trademark signature was grabbing your hand in his, warmly, with his hand on top. He would kiss the top of his hand to make you feel welcome. And it did.
Time to bring that awareness of bacteria back into our collective awareness.
You rock!! Thank you.
We’re absorbing this, like every other taxpaying citizen watching the catastrophe, the slow motion flash flood.
It was coming. Nothing in the signs said “It’s all good”.
I’m actually better at Local, Back in the Cheney Days I booked a city War Memorial park for an Anti-war event with food, flowers, music and talking/speeches. Back in the Vietnam War Days it was a common protest park, so I heard. I was the only one signing the permit. My family agreed we weren’t doing bail, we were doing community grassroots talking about the situation. Let Mom sit, it’s all good. A good opportunity to see what’s happening FOR REAL with our incarceration system. I’m not someone they want to make an example of, apparently.
I think it’s because I know too many moms and we marvel at how our kids are changing from the TODDLER dance class days. 20 years ago.
Never underestimate the middle aged mother with nothing to loose and all the time in the world to make phone calls and show up at protests.
We need a Mothers Of America movement.
Suz!
newton! how’s the west bay tonight?
I’ll let you know when and if summer ever arrives.
For crying out loud, today was sweatshirt weather.
we gotta heat wave forecast for starting friday. may hit triple digits in portland — i hope it doesn’t get warmer than the low 80′s here on the coast. tonight, however, i’m in long sleeves and fleece
And the 90′s temps are killing us here in Ohio.
Suz !

I mean it’s not like we break usually break a hundred for weeks at a time. But you know this place – this looks like the Indian-Summer Novembers we have.
I enjoyed it … we’re sweltering with the heat ‘n’ humidity as well … which we will be wishing for, in mid-Jan.
back porch ceiling fan, tall glasses of seltzer with lime, books about France…
its been strange up here. astoria has only hit its average temp 4 times since july. those indian summers in october can be blazing but yeah, i know that november….
Your sex life is none of my business….

Good thing I’m a passionate herb gardener. Just Say Now. :]
also good planning on your part stocking your larder for the winter. have you checked into selling some chickens? when is the next batch due for culling?
That’s the spirit!
Best to you and yours openhope.
I can run a waiting list for my chickens. Everyone wants to buy one for $30. I would do that if people picked up their chickens LIVE. Like in other third world countries.
i don’t think driving back home with live chickens in my car would be a good trip
A little something for the ex-boss…
Evening Pups, Suz.
Nice vid, another band I never dreamt I’d see but DID see, at Strawberry Music Fest.
And Cindy Cashdollar was on the pedal steel then, too.
Openhope, so sorry to hear of your bad news. Best to you and yours during this setback.

I’m hanging in there, trying to beat the heat with cold water, iced coffee, etc. How are you?
i’m hanging in myself. am enjoying the cool before the heat arrives.
Thank you all for your empathy. It feels good.
On the bright side, we’re no longer beholden to the Mormans as we’ve been for 6 years.

Talk about weird, huh . . . Portland hotter n Sacto . . . . them Bay Area whiners don’t know they got it good. ;-)
Ray Wiley Hubbard wrote that one.
At a small show I saw him at once in a church up in Georgetown (hwy 49 between Auburn/Placerville) he said he retired on the royalties! Gave him time to do his OWN music!!! *G*

I’m so sorry for that insufferable heat level!!!!

hahaha!
That’s what I did with it too, back in the days of jewelry making as a cottage industry in the Southwest. It just has a great look and texture.
dayam — i love amethysts.
Hey, Bigbrother. Peace.
