hey nahant — how ya doing tonight?
Hey Suzanne!
Are you having a nice evening?!
hey newton — how goes?
hey bb — how’s your bay?
OK and the Lady is much better a bit weak but on the mend… how bout you Suz?
Awww, that was CUTE!
*waves at suz*
oh yay — so glad to hear she is better. i’m fair to middlin — tis 59 and, as usual, cloudy but comfy here
hey kelly — how’s denver tonight? glad ya liked it. janice rarely sang and usually just played lead guitar
hey matt — how’s az tonight?
Great. Have come to the conclusion that the Hansonettes smoke dope! Or peyote!
We’z good – got on offer on the Old One’s house in Grand Junction! W00t!
There’s another pending, but one way or another, we’re gonna accept an offer tomorrow and FINALLY wind this whole nightmare down.
must be that $4,000/ounce stuff they talked about in american beauty
yay!!! such good news kelly
On and off thunderstorms. Cool here at 6000 feet. And it is a Friday night!!
Nahant, best wishes for her from me. Hugs to you both.
That shit was $180/oz in 1977.
hey margot — how ya doing?
i remember $10 lids that were a full four fingers back in the late 60′s early 70′s
Why thank you Margot ☺ ☺ We both appreciate the kindness..
2 fer $15 back east in…full 28gms..
my mom’s in the phoenix area and said another monsoon storm was due in
Thanks – it is!
The economics are so weird though. Right now on their MediCaid app, it says the house was worth $190k. That was Grand Junctions tax appraisal for 2008, good for 2009. (They’re a year behind.)
The house actually SOLD for $145k, even AFTER belch did all his magic to it; that was to make it sell quick, which it did – 50 days.
So now, we have to petition MediCaid to make the folks spend-down 145k instead of $190k, or $4k per month of what it costs for assisted living, and get the Medicaid to kick in 10/11 months earlier.
It’s insane.
fucking inflation
I stand opposed to human sacrifice.
I’m OK, looking forward to fair week coming up. We’re near the fairgrounds and it’s a great amalgam of smells, sounds and kids trying to climb our back fence to get in free.:)
damn straight.. but it is better stuff… there is that ya know.. ☺
I remember $10 weed. But not for THAT weed.
jeebus… it is so forking wrong that they make folks go through all those hoops.. thank goodness you and belch are able to help the parents out with the paperwork.
These prisoners of conscience…
our fair starts next wed. luckily for me, its is way on the east side of town, so i should be able to avoid a lot of the traffic when i go into town for any errands — all of which can be handled on the west side of town.
that’s so funny about the kids…
hey sunny — how ya doing?
Hey, all.
hey wigwam — how ya doing tonight?
It is about a 50% chance on Saturday. We have had a lot of storm damage here.
yikes — what kinda damage?
Not only that; it’s the destitution.
They had a farm in NE for 35 years, and paid of the mortgage. Retired in 13 years ago. Sold it and paid cash for that house in the Junction. Judy only worked part time during the farm years, so she only contributed so many SocSec quarters.
Charlie’s company went bankrupt and terminated his pension 1 year after retirenment. Their 401k hit the skids in 2008, but they didn’t realize it, but would only have made a $25k difference. So there’s only SocSec at $1800 for the both of them.
Nutshell; the house buys them 25 months of assisted living, at which point they’re destitute, and MediCaid will pick up assisted living.
They’re having a hard time with the idea that 35 years worth of farming, and 13 years of scrimping along yields 2 yrs of self pay in their old age,and then destitution.
And people wonder why I’m a SocSec maniac?
stormy
When I first moved to California, I was having breakfast with a bunch of guys I’d recently met in a pool hall. One of them said that he’d gotten busted for “possession with intention to sell.” I said, “They can’t prove what you intended; you could say it was for personal use.” He said, “Well, I had quite a bit.” I said, “Like, how much.” He said, “A ton and a half.” That sure shut me up.
Evening Suz and crew. I was downstairs catching up on the “Jane Kicks Ass Again” thread. Love it.
Otherwise, I could say I got by with a little help from my friends this week. Whew.
Jeebus!
that is so forking wrong on so many levels…. what a fucking bitter pill for them to have to swallow after all that work.
Good for you guys, Kelly. At some point we just have to take a loss rather than throwing good money after bad…
hey bg — how ya doing?
hey loohoo — how’s socal tonight?
This is BEFORE the Catfood Commish!
It Ain’t That Great Now! And people should realize it. Cutting is beyond disastrous. I’m seeing it firsthand.
Homes flooded, roads, water and sewer damaged.
Flooding in Polacca prompts emergency declaration
And here is an extra story on Hopi Food workshops that I have been doing with others! Traditional Hopi foods crucial in Hopi life
I so know that routine, Kelly. It is incredible how bad this all sucks. I had a lot of stuff with Little Momma this week, criminy. It is her skimping and saving that is paying for her care now. Thank goodness. But she just hates to see the money going. She is shielded from a lot of the reality (dementia being what it is), but she still can grok on the big numbers on the checks.
It’s a melancholy weekend: 50-year HS reunion and burying my mom.
holy moly.
and how forking kewl matt
That kind of thing just should not happen.
That sounds festive, Margot! A fair in your very own backyard.
((((wigwam))))
oh wigwam — i’m so sorry (((wigwam and family)))
Hi Wigwam. LTNS.
Must move on to bright side!
Here’s my favorite Muppet crooning a little Ludwig Van….
Awww, man. Feel for you.
(((so sorry, wigwam, take care of yourself)))
(((dude)))
Gosh, Kelly. You need to spend more time listening to Lizard who’ll tell you how exceptional America is, and how you damn well better appreciate it.
A doctor told me, when I was dealing with my dad having Alzheimers and trying to be on top of his nursing home care, that “the mind is kind.” She repeated this several times. I guess it isn’t always (PTSD) but I could kind of see what she meant. Basically what it said to me was that you can only take in so much and then your mind sort of shuts off to protect you.
Reluctantly banning myself from the farmers mkt tomorrow – counter tops and fridge are overloaded.
So many black tomato varieties this year….. just heaven. My shopping time would be better spent freezing sauce.
Still cold. No such thing as climate change.
Total respect for you, Matt.
oooooo tomatoes have taken a hit here with the cool weather and not much sunshine. frozen sauce makes for a little bit of summer in the middle of winter
Suz,
This is Navajo about 40 miles away: Navajo Nation declares state of emergency
(((wigwam)))
((wigwam))
local weather dood said that we are officially forecast for ‘la nina’ this winter.
Hugs, wigwam. Embrace. Let the tears flow.
Hi Margot, it is hard to watch, que no? I am tired from the week, not sure I can get the wind behind my back tonight.
On the bright side, though we also had some torrential rain this week, my garden is doing pretty well. I am DONE with apricots finally, and I’m (sorta) looking forward to the peaches. I did not have time to pick grapes, not sure if there will be any after this weekend. My tomatoes are really starting to kick ass. Next year I am going to try to be more organized with my backyard farm.
Thanks!
i’ve not heard a thing about any of this. my local news covered the mudslides around flagstaff (from the earlier fire) but nothing about native lands suffering
((wigwam))
Hey, everyone. Thanks for the support. In spite of the fact that she has been declining for a few years, Mom was the soul of our family and the last of her generation. So, her passing is a monumental loss.
I’m so impressed with that generation who came of age at the dawn of the Great Depression. Dad turned 15 in 1929, dropped out of school, and went to work in the coal mines to support his family. Mom, who was two years older, finished another year of HS and took clerical work to help support her family. And, ten years later, their brothers had to go off to war.
We have been seeing a lot of pictures of the bridge that washed out. Twice. Or is it more now? I have not seen the news last few days.
Good work there at Hopi, Matt. Back in the day, my family had some connections with 2nd Mesa.
For the whole west coast? Wonder what that means.
Bless ya both and all family hoss . . . been there and done that . . .
hey larue — how’s sac tonight?
Oh, I’m so sorry. It’s embarrassing how much I care about the tomato crop.
BTW, there is a variety called “Anais Noir” a/k/a Black Pineapple that’s number one on the hit parade here.
Matt – do you know the Humeumptewas in Old Oraibi? Rocky Humeumptewa specifically?
what’s it taste like?
The AZ Republic is 250 miles away and the Flagstaff paper is so-so. THe Navajo-Hopi Observer is a weekly. You can also find stuff at the Navajo Times.
No I don’t but I have Hopi friends at Oraibi who would know everybody there.
I’ve not heard of that one, “black pineapple.”
My wife has planted a bunch of “heirloom tomatoes,” and damn they are good.
That bridge is closer to Gallup.
How about John Hansen – more specifically his daughter Liz?
black pineapple tomato
Story – Liz Hansen and Olga Koi’oumptewa and I went for a drive one day, call it 1983 sometime, from Old Oraibi to Flagstaff.
It’s a LOOONG way.
A little spirit helped us, and before we knew it, we were in Santa Fe! The wrong direction! But Liz got an art piece in a show there, and it was wild.
Liz is a curator of a museum in Santa Fe now. Good times.
Afraid not, who was he working for?
I have nothing but empathy for you, yours, and the family.
My folks were lucky, they passed on before what they had was lost.
The rest of us boomers, though . . .
Gonna be a hard ending.
I got here in December of 1991. I am sure there a many people who would know of the Hansens.
Somebody really fun!
tomato
My condolences, Wigwam.
coming up on 100.. going silent until its snagged
Don’t worry, you will break the 100 Barrier.
*whispering*
See!
Now it’s time. . .
et tu lurk?
I had to try, just once.
lol, apparently first try’s a charm.
g’nite bg
Yeah for Lurking Mod!! You get the cake! Share?
I have seen your famous cakes, but that one is a regular upside-down chandelier!
Let us eat.
Sorry, was catching up to comments, Kelly and Wigwam had me thinking of the loss of my folks.
Kewl, as is! Lo’s in the 50′s, hi’s in the 80′s or so for a week more! A 90F here n there, barely.
Great time last night at the final jam for the man of the hour moving to Alaska.
Lots of bbq, potluck, about 30 folks showed up, picking around a fire ring till about midnight.
Clothes today still smelt like woodsmoke, bbq. A real fest vibe.
Man, I’m here to tell ya Pups, there’s NOTHING like hanging with a lot of folks doing different kinds of music on all acoustic instruments in a jam circle.
Last night was great. Lots of harmonies . . . all the time.
In a jam circle, the leader of a song rotates around in the circle song to song (for those of you who don’t know this) as I know you know Suz.
Leader picks the song, the key, tempo, and decides how to share breaks (aka solo work) during the song.
Leader is expected to announce the song title, who did it or wrote, what key it’s gonna be played in, and what the chord changes are gonna be . . . unless EVERYone knows the song, then it’s only the key announced.
What a fine time I had last night with great folks. Almost like a fest.
*G*
Maybe he lives in NM Pueblo land now. But John’s a native and an expert on Pueblo archeology in all the Hopi dwellings, as well as others.
wow that is gorgeous.. lurk had better not bogart it
Your garden sounds beautiful. Do you have any hollyhocks? I haven’t seen any here, really miss them. Maybe they don’t like “wet feet” which they sure would get in the clay soil.
SN, we got a little 8 x 12 foot plot on our apartment back patio, and about 10 other large 7 gallon pots with ‘maters.
And I am here to tell ya, for the past 7 years we been DOIN ‘maters, I’ve not know of Maters Noir!
How cool!
Is there a link to a pic of said mater somewhere you could post?
How do they taste?
Totally fascinated!!!!!!!!
I will ask around about him.
Movie trailer time.
Yeah, each year we go find some heirlooms and raise them . .
This year we got some GREAT purple striped one’s, some yellow one’s, and some orange one’s.
Along with little round Sun Golds, some roma’s (they got end rot for some reason in the pots) and a few others I forget what they are, but are mostly red round, or red and like ribbed softballs!!!
*G*
Great season, due to kewler temps here.
MY problem, I need to learn to plant heat resistant ‘maters . . .
the only question is….. which one are you
That would be great!
For him, or Rocky Humeumptewa, the Hansens, Olga Koi’oumptewa, and Andrea Hanley, would love to give my regards.
Formative people in my youth.
LOL!
My wife puts mozzarella and olive oil on them. Wow!
We got some ‘maters that are purple, look like that before fully ripened!
That ain’t black!
*G*
Nice catch, thanks for the pic . . . I wonder if that’s what Sunny’s raising?
Only one way to mess up a compass . . . and a map.
*G*
Here is a clue:
‘Mind the gap.’
/~~~
Yep – aliens, or mushrooms.
Please forgive my lack of response tonight. I’m on a toy computer because the freaking mouse on my adult computer makes everything spaz out.
shoot the gap
oh yuck loohoo
You are to damn funny!
Sorry you, or somebody else had to edit a comment I made earlier today. Totally blog-rightful.
But belch and I still tee-hee over it!
Hey, Larue. I’ve been to many a bluegrass festival. It’s a community like no other.
niter’s all, I am fadinnnnng…….
Sliced maters, wedged with buffalo milk mozzarella, and fresh whole sweet basil leaves.
Drizzled with EVOO, balsamic, garlic, s n p vinegarette.
N maybe some non pariel capers, a bit of lemon zest, n shreds of hi end parm reggiano glossed over it all.
*G*
*G*
SW Desert Cactus.
*G*
Nighters, Matt.
But it was cute as a button! Who knew?
Loo, aint they grand . . .
Which one’s have ya hit? I forget where yer at.
I’m in CA. I know of Winfield and Galax (both really competitions and not stage fests), and more than a few back east I’ve heard of over the years that I wish I could attend!
*G*
Do you pick or sang, I forget, my bad . . .
Give me 20 push-ups and we will forget that the whole thing ever happened.
Wipe up that white lined stuff, good to go!
Tastes like essence of tomato ;-)
Dunno the proper lingo, but the flavor is dense and rich and the scent divine. Not particularly acid or sweet. They have even more of the dark, dark green color than cherokee purples. Because of the coloration, not necessarily a tomato one would select for its looks without knowing more..
I used to prefer very acidic toms.. now thinking that was just because they tasted like *something*.. There is also a nice cherry type called Black Cherry and a grape type called Black Russian. The Black Russian is pretty big – for a mini.
I’m reading Matt Taibbi’s latest and running across phrases like: “They fuck like crazed weasles in heat” and “During the yearlong legislative battle that forged this bill, Congress took a long, hard look at the shape of the modern American economy – and then decided that it didn’t have the stones to wipe out our country’s one dependably thriving profit center: theft.” I recommend reading it for the laughs, if nothing else.
g’nite matt
I just got the dead-tree version, will be laughing and crying with it later.
mmmm gonna have to see what i can get in town… thanks sunny
Cherokee Purple!
Sunny, that’s one of the plants we have in the ground!
Great ‘maters for us this year!
Just dark rich and wholesome taste and colorations!
And one of our best producers so far!
Thanks!
Matt’s writing kills me. He’s way more serious and sober than Thompson but every bit as insightful and witty.
Taibbi is one of those I rank up there with Chompsky, Englehardt, Greenwald, Jamal, and more.
He’s a delight!
Uh, that’s wafting into the heavens of the lords there, invoking Hunter’s name with Taibbi.
;-)
I understand that he got his start over in the former Soviet Union shortly after it fell, and eventually got his ass thrown out for subversive writing. I have it from good sources that there were lots of economic scams going on at the time.
Plus, both have/had hearty reasons to pissed as Hell at the goings-on. That helps a lot.
You haven’t been to Aspen in a while, have you…
Holy cow. Hunter would be BEYOND apoplectic.
Mmm. I’m gonna look for those at the farmer’s market.
I’m simply noting the degree to which they make me laugh till I split my sides.
Because NO LLN should go without some fine grassin . . . .
Ginseng Sullivan
It was done long ago by Norman Blake, who wrote it. On an album with Tut Taylor, The Flat Pickin Dobro Man (only one I’ve ever known to use a flat pick on a square neck dobro) and Ginger And Grant Boatwright.
This was ’72 or so.
This version, it don’t suck . . . . Sam Bush, Tony Rice . . . . and pals.
Love this story.
Wow! Inside scoopin there!
Thanks!
I don’t have to go to Aspen hoss, to know this, I was being polite.
;-)
Hunter is lord AFAIC.
Suz, that’s it. But the coloration varies and is not uniform from tom to tom. …..
The cherokee purple has accustomed me to slicing toms that don’t look ripe because they are half dark green.
Larue, blacks and purples aren’t always black or purple it seems. And as best I can tell, the purples are often classed as blacks. Go figure ;-)
I saw your tomato photos…. wow!
about time for me to head out folks. thanks for letting me spend a wee bit of time with you tonight.
g’nite all and le poof
I have highest regard for Hunter. Damn, I’ve enjoyed his stuff, and got a lot of insight from it.
G’nite Suzanne.
No, I’m no musician. *wish* Harbison Canyon in San Diego County. Watched Stuart Duncan grow up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Duncan
Hey, but .. You remember how Hunter wailed on Richard Nixon. So far as I can tell, BHO is well to the right of RMN.
What you know of Hunter is fine for you, and I don’t care how polite you think you’re being.
I’m talking Aspen is even beyond what you think it is. Millionaires can’t afford to live there. Absorb that for a minute before you respond.
Sunny! Them pics are now what, a month old? Honored you looked at them!
Thanks for all your gardening info, I appreciate learning more!
Despite the whole crop rotation thing, and nematodes from ‘maters in the same patch year after year.
We’ve found a way to use the same patch of dirt to do maters.
I think it’s because of our recent use of steer manure in Nov when we tear it all out.
And again in January, when we till it again. With more steer manure.
The potted one’s in 7 gallon buckets always fair well, unless they don’t like the heat and sun. At 100F, a lot of ‘maters we’ve done in past years just fail . . .
So, I got me some research to do.
This year is a godsend, temp wise, it’s so kewl it’s insane, never happened this kewl since we moved here in ’88.
But I’ll take it!
And bless those at 100F or more, dying in the midwest and on the east coast.
*G*
He’s spun my head around a bit over the years.
One of my FAV movies was Bill Murray in Where The Buffalo Roam.
*G*
Niter’s Ma’am, and thanks for all you host and do . . .
*G*
I feel bad for you and those in your spot on the planet.
And I don’t look forward to other regions getting ‘bathtubbed’ along the same lines.
If you live in the USA, you are either going to be similarly submarined, or someone you love will.
Stuart!!!!!
One of the best ever, right up there with Vassar, Bobby Hicks.
And a solid stalwart for Bluegrass Album Band, IBMA Awards Shows and Awards, and so much more!
Lucky you!!!
He’s one of a handful . . . and a hero.
Isn’t it amazing how good they are compared to the “commercial” varieties?
Thank heavens for the seed savers of the world.
We live in a big apartment complex, some 600 or more units.
I now take seeds from our maters, and will walk about at times (at night), and scatter them with the pulp, into patches of open dirt just to see what will happen.
In a year or more now, I expect to see wild maters growin . . . .
*G*
I used to hear him back in the late 70s at the Idyllwild Blue grass festivals.
Last time I saw Stuart he was with Alison Kraus and Robert Plant.
Hey folks: today I was thinking and writing about “the New Untouchables” who would go after the tax cheats. And I envisioned the way the right would howl about it. Yet the right feel it is fine to recommend crazy stuff like cut taxes as the answer to every thing.
This muppet fixation concerns me. It seems somewhat akin to MSNBC’s obsession with baseball.
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins, Blow and Herbert this morning. Ms. Collins, in “Yankee Doodle Daffy,” says voters are heading to the polls in Connecticut on Tuesday! Let’s look at some of the big issues there. Mr. Blow addresses “Haiti’s (Would Be) Hip Hop President” and says Wyclef Jean probably has good intentions, but he lacks the experience to serve as Haiti’s next president. Mr. Herbert, in “Putting Our Brains on Hold,” says the United States, once the world’s leader in the percentage of young people with college degrees, has fallen to 12th among 36 developed nations.
Here they are.
The coffee and tea are ready, the cold drinks are in the fridge, and I’ve got waffles with warm maple syrup. We had a storm last night, so I’m headed out to clean and fill the bird feeders before the birds go all Alfred Hitchcock on us. Have a great day.
i love the west coast in part because of the killer winter storms that roll in. Anyway on my favorite weather site, mammoth dweeb report, there was a good synopsis of the coming la nina :
“A RECAP OF THE SUMMER AND A FIRST LOOK AT THE FALL-WINTER OF 2011:
LA NINA CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN OVER THE EQUATORIAL EASTERN AND CENTRAL PACIFIC.
IT HAS BEEN A COLDER THAN NORMAL SUMMER FOR COASTAL SECTIONS OF CALIFORNIA STRICTLY BECAUSE OF THE MUCH COLDER THAN NORMAL SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES ALONG THE WEST COAST AND THE PERSISTENT TROFING OFF SHORE PUSHING THE AIR INLAND OVER THE COLDER WATER.
BASED UPON PAST MODERATE LA NINAS…..THE DWEEBS BELIEVE OUR UPCOMING WINTER WILL BE AN EXCEPTIONALLY COLD ONE FOR THE PAC NORTHWEST AND THE NORTHERN HALF OF CALIFORNIA/GREAT BASIN WITH MAMMOTH ON THE BORDER OF THAT. OVERALL THE ODDS FAVOR NORMAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS (80% TO 120%) OF PRECIPITATION FOR THE MAMMOTH AREA AND A MUCH DRIER THEN NORMAL WINTER WEATHER IS POSSIBLE FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. LA NINA’S ARE NOTORIOUS FOR PRODUCING EARLY SEASON TEASER SHOWERY TYPE STORMS THAT DROP OUT OF THE NORTH/NORTHWEST PRODUCING LIGHT SNOWFALL WITH PERIODS OF WARMER THEN NORMAL TEMPS WITHIN THE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER TIME FRAME. THEN SOME REALLY COLD OUTBREAKS IN LATE NOVEMBER, DECEMBER AND JANUARY.
