Late Night: God Gooses Glenn Beck

By: Lisa Derrick Tuesday August 31, 2010 8:00 pm

Glenn Beck thinks God gave him a flyover at his Beckstalnacht rally Saturday in Washington DC. With a flock of geese. Because Glenn Beck couldn’t get a military flyover. Or someone in uniform to present the flag, thank god/s.

How Many Lone Nuts Does It Take To Make A Party Mix?

By: Eli Tuesday August 31, 2010 6:47 pm

At what point is it fair to say that the right has created a culture of anger and hate that urges its followers to violence again and again and again? Wherever it is, I think we’re several hundred miles past it.

Reid: Energy Bill Pushed to Lame-Duck Session

By: David Dayen Tuesday August 31, 2010 6:00 pm

A narrow energy bill which Harry Reid scaled back from earlier, more grandiose ambitions is likely to be pushed back until after the midterm elections, said the Senate Majority Leader on a conference call today. However, he did offer renewed hope, for the first time in a while, that the bill could include a renewable energy standard, mandating a percentage of electricity to be generated from renewable sources.

Obama Speaks To Nation On Iraq

By: Siun Tuesday August 31, 2010 5:00 pm

Tonight, President Obama addresses the nation to mark the “official end to combat operations in Iraq.” David Dayen at FDL News previewed the speech earlier today by noting the following: In remarks at Fort Bliss today, the President gave a rough outline of his remarks tonight about Iraq. Live-and-Let-Live Charlie Crist Wants to Ban Same-Sex Marriage

By: Teddy Partridge Tuesday August 31, 2010 4:15 pm

Something’s not quite right here, and congratulations to CNN’s Ed Henry for probing Charlie Crist’s position on marriage equality. Getting to the bottom of it, Ed asks Charlie: doesn’t it sound like you’re having it both ways?

Portrait of HAMP Failure: Losing Homes on a Technicality

By: David Dayen Tuesday August 31, 2010 3:30 pm

The loose, on-the-fly nature of changes to the documentation part of the HAMP program frequently catches borrowers short. Not only does HAMP require significant documentation, it often changes the rules mid-stream. More common is the fact that a drawn-out modification process requires current information on the financial status of the borrower. HAMP trials are supposed to only last 90 days, but I’ve yet to meet anyone who passed through the application process and the trial modification in that short a time. The extended process means more documentation to keep current. And new requirements keep cropping up.

Poll Suggests Unpopular Individual Mandate Hurts Health Care Reform’s Popularity

By: Jon Walker Tuesday August 31, 2010 2:45 pm

Health care reform has steadily decreased in popularity since its passage as the Kaiser tracking poll shows; the individual mandate is deeply and extremely unpopular. Using the IRS to force Americans to buy a product from one of the most unpopular industries in America is so clearly a terrible idea that Democratic congressional candidates in contested races should think about suing the White House and their leadership for gross political malpractice. (If only some progressive blog had warned them about how unpopular the individual mandate would be without a public option.)

Democrats Edge Closer to Rhetorical Box Canyon on Social Security

By: David Dayen Tuesday August 31, 2010 2:00 pm

House Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are directly attacking Republican proposals not only to privatize but to cut Social Security benefits, which could prove extremely problematic after the results of the deficit commission get released in November.

By: Jim White Tuesday August 31, 2010 1:20 pm
