Earlier this afternoon, I received a phone call from a DNC fundraiser who used the BP Oil Disaster as a pitch to donate to the Democratic Party. When I answered the call from an Austin, TX based number, the woman on the other end promptly thanked me for my past support, and asked if I would like to renew my commitment to the DNC.

Deficit Peacocks Admit Their Own Fraud with Talk on Tax Cuts, Defense |
| By: David Dayen Monday July 12, 2010 2:10 pm |
Speaking of believing lies more strongly, you have a host of deficit fanatics on Capitol Hill who cling to the deeply held belief that tax cuts create more revenue. At least, that’s the only explanation I can come up with for this lunacy.
It’s the Economy, Stupid Democrats |
| By: Jon Walker Monday July 12, 2010 1:20 pm |
Growth in real disposable income leading up to an election is a near-perfect predictor of how the incumbent party will do, says Ezra Klein in a perceptive article. This close correlation should not be surprising. People judge the majority party based on how much their personal economic standing has improved or deteriorated, as well as their friends’ and family’s.
It is always the economy.
Catfooder Simpson Pushes Sovereign Default as Social Security “Fix” |

President Obama’s deficit commission, lovingly described around these parts as the cat food commission. It lived up to its name yesterday, as Bowles and Simpson described the budget as “a cancer that will destroy the country from within.” It’s one of those curious cancers which would go completely away if Congress simply did nothing. But this cancer must be fought, we’re told, by making sure retirees have no financial security.

| By: Jim White Monday July 12, 2010 9:35 am |
Over the weekend, the top hat was removed from the gushing BP oil well and the old riser pipe was unbolted. A new riser pipe was bolted into place on Sunday, but on Monday morning, this new riser may be bent.
Environmentalist FAIL: Why the BP Disaster Hasn’t Moved the Needle on Climate and Energy |
| By: David Dayen Monday July 12, 2010 8:45 am |
As David Fahrenthold and Juliet Eilperin report in the Washington Post, despite the BP oil disaster, despite its direct ties to our addiction to oil, the spill has resulted in almost no groundswell for environmental change.
Cybersecurity: As “April Strawberry” Blossoms into “Perfect Citizen,” Transparency Questions Remain |
| By: emptywheel Monday July 12, 2010 8:00 am |
Perhaps I’m missing something, but it seems that a somewhat coercive but nevertheless voluntary monitoring of cybersecurity via a program like “Perfect Citizen” for things like a nuclear generating plant isn’t such a bad thing.
Occam’s Razor Answers Krugman’s Question |
| By: Scarecrow Monday July 12, 2010 7:10 am |
The simple answer to the question, “why didn’t the Obama Administration propose a major jobs and economic recovery program for 2010?” is that the people who advise the President are incompetent, and he apparently doesn’t think that.
