Yes on Prop 19 Winning 52%-36%; Majority Supports Legalizing Marijuana

By: Jon Walker Monday July 26, 2010 7:15 pm

Proposition 19, which would legalize, tax and regulate marijuana for adults over 21 years old, is currently winning by a wide margin among California voters according to a new PPP poll. The measure is supported by 52% of voters while opposed by only 36%.

In addition, there is more good news about support for marijuana legalization from Rasmussen Reports. For the first time, their poll of all American adults has a plurality supporting legalization: 43% think marijuana should be legalized while 42% think it should remain illegal. That is a significant improvement from a similar Rasmussen poll just a little over a year ago, which found 41% supporting legalization and 49% opposed. It is possible that Prop 19, by bringing the debate to the forefront, is starting to noticeably move national opinions by forcing people to take some time to actually think about the issue.

Will the CFPB Get Gutted Before It Even Starts?

By: David Dayen Monday July 26, 2010 6:30 pm

It does appear that Elizabeth Warren has the inside track to getting the position as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A source tells FDL News that Geithner is working on setting up CFPB with Elizabeth Duke, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. Duke is a former community banker and the past head of the American Bankers Association, a trade lobby group. She served on the ABA’s board of directors from 1999 to 2006. The ABA opposed the Dodd-Frank bill almost entirely because of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

FDL Movie Night: Negroes To Hire

By: Lisa Derrick Monday July 26, 2010 5:00 pm

Slavery and the racism surrounding it is a grotesque aspect of the United States, a stain on our country. The AP’s “Most Complete Published Account” that Leaves Out Torture

By: emptywheel Monday July 26, 2010 4:00 pm

There is a great deal of evidence that Jose Rodriguez knew as early as September 6, 2002 that he needed to destroy evidence of the torturers exceeding the guidelines set in DC. According to anyone’s definition, that means Rodriguez knew years before he had the tapes destroyed he was destroying evidence of torture, even by Jay Bybee’s and possibly John Yoo’s measure.

Yet the AP — in their “most complete published account” — doesn’t even mention that torture?

Obama Administration Threatens Veto on Any Bill Blocking EPA Carbon Regulations

By: David Dayen Monday July 26, 2010 1:30 pm

This is pretty good news. It’s important to note that the death of climate legislation does not mean the death of carbon regulation. It just moves it into a new phase, where the EPA takes the lead. And the Administration will protect that privilege.

The HAMP program is not just a terrible deal for struggles homeowners – it’s a terrible confirmation of government not working. It needs to stop and those responsible need to be fired, before it consumes the entire progressive project in its wake.

Last week, Congressman Zach Wamp (R-TN), who’s running for governor in Tennessee, channeled his inner Jefferson Davis. But just like the cowardly Rick Perry — as soon as he was called on it — he ran for the hills.
