You don’t have to follow many elections before realizing that it’s standard campaign practice to tie your opponent to a bogeyman of some sort. As Bill Ayers or Jeremiah Wright could tell you, the tactic doesn’t always work, but it’s always tempting to strategists to give it a try.
But not since Osama bin Laden released a video just before the 2004 presidential election has a bogeyman stepped forward to help the cause as enthusiastically as this:
With the 2010 election season underway, Republicans are reportedly concerned about how the impending release of former President George W. Bush’s memoir, Decision Points, may affect the party’s success at the polls come November.
While the widely-anticipated book from Bush isn’t set to be released until November 9 — one week after votes are cast across the country — details from the text have already begun to leak out.
That’s right, and as the release date approaches, you’ll have Dubya making public appearances to pimp the book, probable excerpts in a magazine or two, and TV networks promoting interviews with the former Shrub-in-Chief.
The Huffington Post article linked above quotes ex-Bushite speechwriter Matt Latimer at the Daily Beast:
Some Republicans, particularly those most closely tied to the Bush regime, actually argue the book could help the party by reminding some voters of what they liked about Bush.
Um… yeah, right.
More likely, the ghostwritten Bush tome will be a useful backdrop to the ads Democrats are already creating that link current GOP candidates to the fallen Bush-Cheney regime.
Although I guess it would be easier to thank the guy if the Democrats were more deserving of the help.

swopa! decision points? better title is puppetman: doing what cheney told me to do
More like Panic Points.
I could give a ff about the W memoir. The one I’m certainly gonna read is Rumsfeld’s. What’s the update on that one?
If the Dems have a secret weapon, now would be a good time to use it before the entire country explodes.
Decision Points is actually the English translation of Bush’s chosen title, Deciderin’ Stuff.
Swopa!
I’m just stopping by long enough to say Oyasumi Nasia kaji koinu. It’s been a stressful week and I’m really sleepy. Hope you all have a great evening.
g’nite margaret
If by “secret weapon” you mean backbone, then I concur.
Ouch! Funny how the truth hurts!
I’d name it, “Fool me, can’t get fooled again: 8 Years of Grit.” lmfao
Nite Margaret…pleasant dreams…
Ghost written by some Cheney guy.
As I put it recently, it’s corrupt and openly crazy versus corrupt and secretly crazy.
I’d heard it was Deciderin’ Cheif. Guess someone thought better of it.
(yes, I know about the I before E rule)
Cheney prefers the live performances where Dubya talks while Cheney drinks a glass of water.
hahaha
Mebbe this was the deal Pelosi got, for taking impeachment off the table – she would set the release date of Dubya’s memoir …
Still looks like later 2010, to be published by Penguin Group…
Sounds like a raw deal to me.
i’m thinking it was the r’s who pushed the date of publication until after the midterms. i don’t think bush’s popularity has increased after leaving office — his numbers still have to be in the toilet
Bush likes to do things big if this book does not sell more than Bill Clinton’s did bush will feel like a failure. I expect a huge publicity campaign.
Can we get any numbers on bulk purchases ahead of the book’s official release to gin up fake selling numbers and get it on the NY Times best seller list?
Can we see if people and companies who got favors from bush are doing the buying?
If so can the Justice Dept investigate that as a bribe?
If Bush donates all the profits to charity just how big is his tax deduction?
i think they will do it the same way as sarah’s book… lots and lotsa giveaways, book of the month freebie kinda deals. they have learned to work the distribution system
OT if you write a diary is there any way to find out how many people have read the Diary? Or how many recomends you got?
not that i know of things — the only # i know of is the obvious comment count.
Yeah I think they were selling her book at http://www.vheadline.com/main.asp The Pro Hugo Chavez newsblog thats almost as bad as Sarah trying to sell her book here.
Dang
Any bets the MSM won’t ask Bush how many sales of his book are bulk purchases? I think everytime we see an ad buy a subscription to X rightwing magizine and get a copy of Bush’s book we report it lets see who is giving Bush’s book away and then look at the money men backing the rightwing mag.
Also lets embarrass Bush if http://www.vheadline.com/main.asp or someone else anti Bush advertises Bush’s book lets google to see the worst things that blog said about Bush.
You will get one in your stocking at Christmas.
I wasn’t Bad Santa Don’t do this to Me!!!
Jane pays people to read the book. If that book comes in my house I want an Exorcism!
I have come to regard anything anyone in public life says, as not worth hearing.
And although 43 is worse than most, he is less responsible for his words than say, someone who knows what they mean.
I will however, not be buying the book.
Interesting how seriously moribund Chimpy and his brand are .. he’s had what, a couple speaking gigs since he gave up the prezdential M&Ms? Funny how the RW crazy has rocketed so beyond him that he’s a relic, and so has Obama on the unitary executive fascism .. just amazing really .. he’s like a sad abandoned kid, wondering where the party went ..
oh, and SWOPA!
It’ll give all the candy to the rich and replace it with a lump of coal.
I can’t wait till Marcy reads it with her timelines of everything Bush has done this could get interesting:)
A Shrubya memoir? Yeowza, it’s time to get out the “veto box” and change that channel <zot> Ahhhhhh, that’s better: Voodoo Chile – Angelique Kidjo (Live – 1999).
sharkbabe! how ya doing — haven’t seen your fonts in a while
After X-mas there will be flood of his book for sale on Ebay cheap.
This is the first big attempt to turn that around by rewriting history If the GOP gets the House Bush will take credit.
Jeb will be all over the news the next day trying to launch his campaign for President.
But if the GOP only takes a few House seats…well I’m sure Karl will claim Bush still gave the GOP the victory.
But lets remember this is the worst economy since the Great Depression I might not like Obama but both the House and Senate should be changing hands with these economic numbers if history is any guide.
Heck the GOP should be talking about winning the Senate by a Veto proof margin with these economic numbers.
Good point I wonder how many used right winger books are on sale at amazon and at ebay, craigslist etc vs Dem books?
Everyone still here?
I have to say, I’ve watched Anthony Weiner’s tirade at least 20 times. Lucky MsCE who lives in Brooklyn.
hey ce — wasn’t he magnificent! he totally was able to turn the term ‘gentleman’ into a term of derision
Hey Chris – just arriving.
To borrow a phrase, that was most excellent.
Hey Suzanne, and newt,
Sorry, my bad, I just COULD NOT get enough of it — played it over and over, giggling like a teen!
Most excellent, and if the Dems don’t use this in the 2010 election process, I’ll be gobsmacked.
iirc anthony is buddies with jon stewart from school or college or same neighborhood as kids or something. i hope the video is featured on the daily show. i saw it on countdown tonight — it needs to go viral
Oh yes, Jon and Tony are best buds, maybe even from earlier (like maybe high school?). Anyway, those two spar like pros on The Daily Show! Jon will fan the flames for sure on Monday night. “Go DS, Go Ds”
Democrats are famous for laying down their electoral weapons just when they would do them the most good. I think, with the exception of Grayson, they don’t know what it means, in the political sense, to ‘put up their dukes’.
I would be gobsmacked if they actually do use it, and the dozens, hundreds they have compiled over the years.
Let’s make an Excel spreadsheet!
*remembers not to slam door on the way in*
Hi!
Anthony and Jon were roommates in college.
I knew it was something really personal. Hey Dude! Ca va?
A polite one.
Well, they at least use them in the primaries…
Here’s the one for CO senate from Romanoff – and it’s a beut..
CE! Ca va bien!
Not bad.
I would like to see Democrats look into the camera for that 30 seconds, the whole 30 seconds, and call the Goopers liars and thieves and plunderers, and spell out why.
Grayson, for all his policy wankery, sets the standard.
D’accord! Geez, did I spell that right?
Yes, yes, and yes.
I think we in CO might get Grayson Junior, so to say. The Whitehouse sure does NOT want Romanoff in the Senate. Here’s the OFA mail that came today:
Links omitted, but you get the idea. As if Bennet will lose to a Republican.
Phooey on OFA!
Oui!
Almost LLN, Suzanne are you on?
yup.. i do lln tue – sat and tut has been hosting sun and mon. tonight’s friday so that means muppets
. See you at LLN!
yea!
Friday…
Muppets…
Frumpets!
They are more deserving. More deserving than the Republicans, for god’s sake. Think about this. In the present situation, where
(has_more_money == elected)
there is no possible way a politician — any politician — can be beyond corruption. At the present time, it’s like a law of physics: if you can’t lay your hands on a lot of money, you cannot possibly win an election.
Try to imagine what it’s like being a politician under those circumstances. How would you accomplish anything? There’s only one answer: sell your body and soul, repeatedly, for whatever price the market will bear. Or else give up and go home.
I’m not defending Obama and the Democrats against the charge that they have sold out. No one can defend them against that, because obviously they have sold out.
I’m only saying this: the Dems (and all our elected officials) had no choice but to sell themselves, assuming they actually wanted to be elected.
The NSA could probably help out with that sort of thing.
