Meanwhile, back on planet Earth…
Scientists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies reported recently that the average global temperature was higher over the past 12 months than during any other 12-month period in history. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released corroborating data, adding that the past four months, including June, have each individually been the hottest on record as well….
The average global temperature, computed over a 12-month period, reached a new record in May and held steady for the month of June, he said. This was despite the recent minimum in solar activity, which should have had a cooling effect on Earth. Apparently, Ruedy said, the solar cycle “has much less impact than the warming trend.”
But…but…Al Gore flies in planes and has a big house.

About Firedoglake
It’s just part and parcel of the Reich wings mindset, world view and deeply held religious beliefs that anything that intrudes on their ability to rape and plunder the Earth for profit is a Commie conspiracy. Just ask Pat.
He’s right, there’s no climate change. And the Neo-Nazi was also the presidential choice of the elderly Jewish voters in Palm Beach County.
Whew. I’m so glad I have one less thing to worry about.
I thought this was the hottest summer on record also weather patterns are changing we had rain lots of in late July thursday though saturday late july early august hottest time of the year southern Wisconsin wether is not that different than norther Illinois weather where I grew up this is very unusual.
With the rain and heat I spent 3 days harvesting more tomatoes each day than I have seen four people harvest the week before in the whole field.
Climate change is not just about heat its about changing weather. While this change was good who is to say we won’t have hotter summers changing rainfall patterns and as the GOP was screaming last winter about colder winters?
Funny the GOP didn’t mention Seattle WA warmest winter I’ve seen last year we had cherry blossoms blooming I think it was Feb.
And people wonder why I still refuse to join Facebook…
I don’t get it! Why keep listening to Neanderthals like Pat Buchanan? Why are they still on TV? What good their existence does to this world (may be except their families who depend on his income)? His every prediction during the last election was wrong; he is absolutely predictable. He is not witty; indeed he is dull as a door knob. Do I need to keep going…?
Meanwhile, on other news, the U.S. military is paying Afghan reporters for good news reports. I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked. /s
Facebook creeps me out. Why do people reveal so much personal stuff on the internet for all to see? It’s a mystery to me.
If ever there was a wonderful example of typical simplistic right wing thinking, that is one of the best and clearest.
Me too! And information on the internet never goes away. That’s a genie that can’t be put back in a bottle.
Israeli police eradicating Palestinian village in West Bank. Sheesh, can’t hold a candle to Leopold, whose agents eradicated hundreds or thousands of villages in the Congo, and very efficiently and quickly. Get with the program Israel; you are really too slow to accomplish your ends.
That’s just another Bush program that Obama is continuing with gusto. Barack Obama: Change we can only imagine….
Of course, there are many who would be creeped out by my typing my political opinions here. To each his own.
The real horror is that the change is irreversible. As the polar icecap melts, there is less reflective surface to deflect the sun’s rays from heating the planet. Where once there was reflecting ice, now there is absorbing water, which speeds up the melting of the remaining icecap.
But but but, my Obama-loving friends tell me they still hope…
I dont understand why people spend their time in listening/readubg to Pat Buchanan and George Will type of characters opinion (or expertise in PB or GW own minds)on climate change. They are not relevant. Just making noise without realizing why.
Tourette’s (with apologies to those who suffer from Tourette’s).
Yes. The change in albedo and the increase in water vapor in the air could be the tipping point. There are several possible outcomes, none of them are good.
Verbal assaults on our intelligence from Neo-Nazis like Buchanan on one side. Physical violence by Israeli police on the other. Has sanity become an outlier?
I’m ready to tell the Obamabots to hope in one hand and crap in the other…
But driving my truck is just so much dang fun, and living without air conditioning would be a real bummer.
The change is inevitable it would take years to even slow it down maybe decades to reverse the trend if we started now.
The change is unsteady we might get more rain in Wisconsin this year but maybe not next year we don’t know. September might be a drought. Sure the weather is different every year but with greater hotter and as the GOP reminded us last year colder winters rain and drought can and will change also in ways we are not used to.
While the trend is for warming long term heat is energy increased heat is more energy and as long as we still have a polar ice cap we have more wind.
Wind which can bring down cold weather from the North. Think of the temperature difference on all the other planets between hot and cold.
It’s a start.
Introduce your friends to the net?
What continues to annoy me is that people like Buchanan, who have no credentials in science, much less climate science and an admitted political or financial interest in denying climate change are given just as much, if not more credibility as scientists whose field of study is atmospheric climate and climate trends. One more time with me SCIENCE IS NOT OPINION and CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING NO MATTER HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT AL GORE
Maybe centuries….
You nailed it. It’s worth destroying the planet and ravaging other countries with perpetual war to keep the truck and the precious air conditioning.
Let’s blame it all on Willis Haviland.
With an increase in unplanned weather I expect crop failures maybe not this year but farmers plan for the weather they expect until we get stable weather patterns again they can’t plan. After the crop failures I expect green houses to be the next big thing in farming.
Pat Buchanan “doesn’t believe it,” and he’s “been to the beach for 50 years” with no ill effects? Well that’s good enough for me. One thing puzzling, however. I don’t recall ever having seen a Klan rally at the beach.
Morning BT, Firepups.
Meanwhile… Exxon Mobil earnings rise by $3.6 billion
I went to a science lecture last night with a friend. She had been to one other before in this particular series. The earlier one was about climate change, in the sense that the speaker was a sociologist who talked about why Americans were so willing to believe that climate change was not occurring. I asked my friend whether there was a short version of the a to that q. She said: corp propaganda.
Mornin’, BT, pups
If I live long enough my place will be beachfront property. Pat Buchanan would only be invited to visit the original beach line, however.
Agreed after all even if Obama went full green power and electric, Full cell, hybrid car like we want it would take decades to switch over America 100% never mind the rest of the world.
Reducing green house gas increase just slows things down we need to reduce the amount of green house gasses so the amount in the air actually goes down.
I am not even going to speculate how long that will take. But I hear india and Korea are already talking about producing more fuel efficient cheap and even greener cars.
If Obama doesn’t act now the American auto industry will get swamped by cheap green cars. We may already have lost the race for green power many American companies have some production in China.
Thanks, BT. Global warming denialism is part of the larger problem which EJ writes about this morning:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/28/AR2010072804529_2.html?hpid=opinionsbox1
“I’m a chronic optimist about America. But we are letting stupid politics, irrational ideas on fiscal policy and an antiquated political structure undermine our power.”
Corp Propaganda that owns the Main Stream Media.
Because of the recent SCOTUS decision, we can expect even more of the propaganda.
How is the oil spills on the Florida beaches? I’ve been working to much to keep up with the news.
Channel surfing around over coffee, I usually stumble by “The Morning Joe Noise Machine.” Other than the occasional appearance by Bob Herbert, Chris Hayes and a few others, the show really is nothing more than a zombie fest. It’s essentially the flip side of “Fox & Friends.”
lol. Yeh, sounds like a new slogan they should adopt – “Hope and Crap”. Maybe hope FOR crap.
good morning, pups.
Gonna mess up his starched white sheet. heh…
Of course Buchanan and the rest don’t really care whether their positions actually make sense from a scientific point of view. The general effect they are relying upon is now often referred to as an anchoring effect or as I prefer to call it, moving the line in the sand. As we saw with all of the nonsense posited by Bush, the simple act of making a statement out on the edge of the conversation changes the center of gravity. The fact that a position is not rationally defensible might even make it more likely to be accepted on an emotional basis when the majority of MSM arguments are constructed for the sound bite.
Witness the topic.
The problem is that once that tipping point is reached, your place won’t be beachfront for more than a season or two.
Once again, I must refer to Leopold. His ability to pull the wool over people’s eyes about what he was doing in the Congo puts U.S. propaganda efforts to shame. He paid reporters, thru 3 parties to hide the trail, he (actually all thru intermediaries and eleeomosynary orgs he set up) had flattering pamphlets printed, etc., etc. Not only did he get away with it for decades, some of it did not come out for 70-80 years. More closely guarded files than Stazi or KGB. The U.S. is just a piker in the propaganda field.
If you listened to the MSM yesterday, you would think that Rush Limbaugh was right and the ocean took care of all that oil all by itself.
One would be in for much less disappointment that way.
Nothing south of the Panhandle that I know of. Some of the surface oil has evaporated. A lot now depends on the weather. The underwater plumes are still a problem. Huge dead zones. Thousands of dead birds and sea critters.
That’s a great book.
But we’re coming up fast and eager to learn.
Just what are Pat’s qualifications or George Will’s to talk about Global Warming? I remember them talking about how the Bush tax cuts would grow the economy.
No jobs created during the Bush years yet those 2 who got it way wrong still have a job?
I’ll get a biiiiig raft.
Sure is. Depressing as shit, though.
I have noticed a decline in the quality of lies from the GOP and the Dems they don’t seem to care if they will be believed or if their lies can handle a quick look at the facts never mind the scrutiny we give the facts on the blogs.
You are just constrained by the your limits of reality bound existence, unlike our friends of the sky pilot persuasion. You just need a good old dose of good old fashioned right wing religion! Everything will magically appear to be better!
Currently rereading Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Will have to follow it up with your Leopold reference, to put Conrad into perspective.
Given how long it took the U.S. to learn how to do torture, which has existed for all of human history, and how few false confessions the U.S. managed to garner, I weep for the U.S. incompetence, not only at torture, but also at propaganda. It seems like the U.S. just can’t figure out how to do anything right. /s
We need local Fire Pups to get pictures of the beach at Rush’s beach house in Mississippi.
Thanks I trust personal reports more than the media.
Great analysis. One can only wonder how those responsible for the deceptions manage to live with themselves. It would seem their lives are the perfect definition of hell.
There is a great paragraph in Leopold’s Ghost about how to read Heart of Darkness (there’s a lot about HoD & Conrad in LG, but this particular paragraph is the must read before you read HoD). Read it as a factual book about stuff that actually occurred. Forget about all the symbolism, allegory, psychology, and more complicated gloss that literature PhDs have tried to put on the book.
Those the Gods would Destroy they make Mad first. When you stop listening to facts and argue and act on what you want to believe despite facts your mad.
It is possible that Afghanistan’s melting pot of mercs and black ops may actually be a turning point. Not in proving that torture can work but in proving that Americans, if bombarded with bad news long enough will allow 1984 to come true, if a bit late. Shock and awe have made all sorts of unacceptable acts common place.
Gotta go to work late start today it was good seeing everyone.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Irak: 4,413
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,209
Iraki and Afghan casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M
US MBS 2010: 25,916 and counting

Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
“Depressing as shit, though.”
Yep, reality is like that. I guess that’s why God made Tbogg. ;-)
I don’t think it will….the trouble is that much as I would like to believe in a benevolent, omnipotent sky daddy who looks out for all of us and much as I would like to believe in everlasting life in a paradise, there is just no evidence for it. None. Zero. Zip. Nada. Before things can magically seem better to me, I will have to magically come to believe in that kind of thing.
Conrad was as journalist, so reading it as a factual account does make sense.
The paragraph is on page 143, so if you do an amazon search inside the book, you can find it in all it’s original eloquence.
Conrad was a seafarer, learning how to pilot a steamer on the Congo River, when he visited the country. Wrote HoD 8 years later.
Coffee’s gone & so am I. Be good.
New post up top…
You hit the nail on the head – opinions have been given the same, or more, credence than science. Cold passion dominating over reason, instead of cold facts tempered by compassion.
Things will not go well for the global-warming deniers when we all live in a dome.
Ah, but then there will always be Carousel and only the weak will be runners.
I refuse to watch the clip. If I see Buchanon on tv, I flip the dial. I refuse to pollute my mind with his predictably racist ignorant self-serving bull sh**. Menace to society.
Whatever. I have Republican friends who have told me to my face (and they’re dead serious) that they don’t give a crap about climate change bc they’re “banking” on nothing “really bad” happening while they’re alive. And they’ve stated very clearly to me that they don’t give a crap what happens for their kids and grandkids. It’s all about “me.”
So Republics love the likes of the Buchanon’s of this world bc it reflects their own self-absorbed stupidity.
Good points.
What I find “amusing” (guess that’s the term) is this:
When we experience extra cold and long winters – as we did this past winter – all these climate change deniers stand on their hind legs braying about how cold it is and “ha ha there is no global warming.”
But when we experience an extra hot summer – as we are right now (both in N America, Europe, Russia, etc) – not one of these corporate propogandists says ONE word about “global warming” either.
I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but just saying… it’s yet another example of the hypocrisy, and it’s only about making money. Pathetic.
At the end of the day, most citizens simply don’t care. Therein lies the problem. They simply do not see it as affecting them in any way, so they don’t care about it.
As long as citizens continue to see the climate change “debate” as having no particular affect on them or their lives, there will be no impetus for any real change. Of course corporate propoganda has done a lot to perpetuate the nonsense that we don’t have to “care” about this bc it’s all about Al Gore flying planes and inventing the internet, etc.
Our local zoo has put some pictures of mountain ranges and ice bergs up. They are featured in an area where visitors stand in line to see an exhibit. The pictures are done in a fashion similar to An Inconvenient Truth, in a then and now fashion. No words or educational information about climate change or global warming, just the pictures of the same place side by side from two different times (April)25/30 years ago and then (April)2009.
While standing in line a tween child from a family standing behind us said, “Mama, I thought you said climate change and global warming were lies that liberals tell? Look at these pictures. You know how you say, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words?’ Well these picture now show almost no ice bergs or snow capped mountains. Mama, I do not think it is a liberal lie. I think the Earth is a telln’ us the truth.”
His Mama and Pop had no words. Total silence. Looking down at their feet. Many people around us in line heard this child and became silent as well.
The Earth is a telln’ us the truth.
yikes.
so long homo sapiens, we hardly knew yee.
Learning some basic punctuation rules would help with making your statements much, much clearer. Periods, commas, and semicolons work wonders with forging clarity. I might agree with some of your points; I just have a hard time teasing them out of that jumble of run-on words, phrases, and sentences. :-)
things:
Keep up with the Castillian – stream-of-consciousness writing.
It is very refreshing.
