Robert Randolph and The Family Band – Billie Jean at Rockpalast 1/12/04.
What’s on your mind?

A song in tribute to the Seminal’s new diarist, DW.
Howdy, ma’am.
Fine and over-warm.
You must be getting a breeze of some kind up there.

lap refernces
hey mac — how’s noo yawk city? here’s the link to dw’s diary
hey dave — robert randoph and the family band are forking great — if ya ever get a chance to see them live.. wowza! how ya doing tonight?
gotta check out your bay, it’s perfect i understand
Hello everyone!
the house is situated so that it avoids the northern breeze that hurls down the bay in the summertime. it can be blowing out on the bay and calm as can be here
i am frkg great tonight, suzanne and i gotta check out this band
Sorry seems they have flown the coup… Haven’t seen hide nor hair of them in 6 days… Dam I miss getting some great pictures of all four of the Hawks… I have printed a bunch of them but if interested check out the Hawk link..
Hey pups & suz. Up and perky here!
buncha cousins that started out playing church music as kids — click on the band name in the post and it will take ya to their website
what’s your bay again, suzanne?
hey teddy — how ya doing tonight? FOUR MORE DAYS!
real glad you played Billie Jean. I’m a little ashamed of how much I like that song and dance thingee.
how’re you and your backbone feeling?
aw crap — maybe they are just on vacation and will be back for the meetup on the 7th… a gal *can* hope
its got a forking killer beat and bass line — and robert randolph put a whole new jazzy rock spin on it that just gives the song a whole new flavor… back is back to its usual cranky self
Unfucking believable…after sundown headed West as the evening star rose on a dark blue clear sky. The horizon was lined with a thin orange and barely visible sand spit. Rowed my guts out in flat water no breeze. Put together two 13 minute sets of 1.5 miles each. Just too beautiful for words.
wow… not that pretty … the marine layer has been around all day — but it was still nice in the mid to high 60′s.
iirc, i have featured this song before.. not sure if it was this video tho…
They have MJ all over them
As a great fan of the single, double barreled egg slicers, with them feets pedals, Robert Randalph has become a hoss among the many hosses and hossettes of that instrument since the 30′s.
Nice pick Suz, loves me some pedal steel, regardless of the tune.
And with that, I’m gone . . best to all puppers, and best to all yers.
Weather here in Sacto is so grand, the day time frivolity’s are wearin me out!
*G*
Hey Folks:
I see Teddy here. I envision him sitting in a room filled with boxes and the smell of spackle fills the air.
he does a great jimi too
I want you all to know that the popular celebrity press have got it all figured out. These are the real hot stories of our time.
# Who Won’t Be at Chelsea Clinton’s Wedding? — Extra TV
# ‘Harry Potter’ Star Parties Hard — Socialite Life
# Oscar-Winning Actress Shows Off Red Bikini — Shape
# Victoria’s Secret Model Looks Great on the Beach – The Blemish
The last one is my favorite.
hey larue — glad ya like the tune and g’nite dood

saw rr open for clapton — was the rare show with the opening act just as good as the headliner.
Yes that is interesting with the box guitar holds those notes longer than Jimi. Psychedelic rock.

circles
This is great, thanks Suz. How did I miss this band?
Slightly cooler here in Ohio, we are all so grateful. I can smell fall in the air.
hey margot — fall? its not even august yet. glad ya like the band — they really rock hard. how ya doing?
Today was one of those days were everything seemed really impossible to do.I started writing three different posts and then stopped because I didn’t feel I had anything interesting to add.
Watching Mad Men gave me a sick feeling in my stomache about work, especially the part about getting and keeping clients and finding out that just doing the work isn’t good enough, you had to sell yourself too. I used to read a lot of women’s magazines about ‘How to get along in the corporate world”. It was helpful for me because they assumed that guys just know how to do it from all there football games (team player) and one upmanship at the frat house.
You are so fast on the draw, Quick Draw, that I know the bank robbers you arrestted asked you if they could see it again Ma’am.
summer song
Hi Moonbeam,
Ever do the San Juan Islands?
I’m fine…I’m probably being over-optimistic wrt fall.
when i hit that wall, i walk away from the project and do something else for a bit — even if that something else is nothing. i’ve not watched mad men — i’m still grieving the loss of lost
that show you heard goes in my side of the “lucky you’ ledger.
what would you say to a monkey on a string?
fast
I’m good, we’re good — but we’re kinda tired of moving and it hasn’t even really started!
Billie Jean is one of the best songs ever! If they had lived, Nat Cole, Sam Cooke, Coltrane, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin all would have covered it. Someday Diana Krall will sing it, probably with Elvis.
hey plove — its on my list — once i get the aok from the mechanic that the car is good for longer trips…. how ya doing? are you up in the san juans?
nekkid
you forgot nekkid
billy preston was playing organ with eric’s band — it was one hella show — right up there with the jimi with chicago opening. iirc, preston died some time after the end of that tour — i think it was his last tour.
and Sid Vicious too!
Well Pups time ta hit the sack with my sweetie…. don’t forget the meetup on 8-7.. info up thread @ my 10..
niters all… hope ya can make it..
hey aitch — how ya doing tonight?
I thought of you, spocko, when Peggy got in trouble for her “PR stunt” for the ham client. But how funny was it that the entire season premier revolved around ham — after SNL did the Jon Hamm’s John Ham segment?
*laughing* while saying “what do you mean you packed all our clothes and didn’t label the boxes?”
g’nite nahant
Had to hunt down the ‘art’ box with blue painters’ tape tonight, to wrap the teevee screen in foam tomorrow after it cools off. Modern tech is soooo fussy!
I’ve been thinking about the difference between the ‘real world’ / blog world thing for a while now and how things that the right wing do in the real world are not only tolerated but encouraged.
that, for some morbid reason, reminded me of the night I was sitting with some friends in the Village Vanguard waiting for Bill Evans to show up and they instead announced that he never would.
the good news is that you have movers who will deliver it to inside your new place. i think the physical moving items out and moving items into the new place is the hardest part of moving. the movers will be doing that for you :)
Not lucky enough for San Juans.
Make do with Eagles and Phillies.
Have kin on Waldron Island.
Hey Miss Suzanne! Not bad though it’s a little hard to type wearing one glove. I love that song no end, always have, and I’m ‘old’. Great play, sweet deejay! You doing okay?
you are in pa?
I don’t have the lifting muscles, or enough friends, to do it any other way than with movers. Thank goodness the scaffolding in front got taken down today; I’m quite sure that would have made the movers’ lives tough on Thursday.
Hey there Aitch
i’m doing well — enjoyed my days off — did a lotta putzing around and zero cleaning or anything productive. i’m gonna have to break down and clean the kitchen soon tho… i opted for the glittery socks to avoid that one glove thang….
ah, hell… in for a penny… and off
me neither – and yay for no more scaffolding!
Okay now I think I shall toddle off, I’m reading Infinite Jest, and only half-way through but it is finally making sense. I suppose everyone else has read it but it came out in the nineties when I had, um, other priorities. So David Foster Wallace is all new to me.
Niters all.
Sure am.
Land of Quakers and Others.
I thought that was very interesting too. Ad agencies always looked down on PR firms. “Free advertising” and part of the reason is they couldn’t figure out how to bill for it. They love the “pass through” money from big media buys.
But Peggy was smart to spot the opportunity. Note that the story was an X vs. Y a conflict story, with a built in narrative. Two women fighting over something in limited supply. A scarcity narrative. “Buy now!”
I loved PR stunts, but they have to be clever. The other thing that I loved was how Don treated the first writer. I can’t tell you how many high tech executive treated the press like that, right down to the cracks about the cheapness of the editor. You will note that he had it figured out for the WSJ. And the WSJ Loves those kind of stories.
One of my clients was a tank commander and I told him that the business press were going to be all over that. He didn’t understand why. I said, “Because they want some narrative hooks to explain your success, and that’s an easy one. Let’s make think about some examples now so that you won’t have to scramble in real time.” Sure enough the Business Week article talked about his experience as a tank commander and how it related to running a company.
hey!
g’nite teddy
diana
Teddy You know I would come help you move. I was just joking about being out of town. But my double detached slipped disk IS acting up but…
Nite!
Hey Mister Teddy. You doing okay? My name is Stuart or Stu – the only name in the alphabet intact. That AitchD alias is my mockery of what-do-you-call-it-high-definition-high-def-or-HD. The ‘i’ and the ‘t’ are silent letters.
Good hearing from you. Be well.
so i’ve been saying it wrong in my head — i should be saying it so it sounds like h-d…. i was wondering about the moniker…
Struggling to figure out how to get clients to pay for PR will be big this season, I think.
Patrick calls this MadMen’s “Braniff” season: flash, lotsa orange, with some razzle-dazzle. And the difference in ten years of age between Betty Draper and the blondes Don is dating now: it is astonishing. So independent, so unwilling to let the man be in charge, so uncaring about showing the man you’re on to him. Don’s gonna have a rough time in the pool, I think.
I think Def Leopard would disagree with you about that ‘only name’ thing.
Also Mos Def.
And that German airline, KLM.
Good to see you.
Now I’m going to bed.
Maybe Tina with Ike http://video.filestube.com/watch,bfca33ea7718a02803ea/Ike-Tina-Turner-River-Deep-Mountain-High.html
i’m gonna need someone to snag that happy 100 tonight so i don’t hit it three tuesday nites in a row
If anybody’s interested, I posted a new diary…
A SITREP On The Wikileaks…
Oops, that was intended as a reply to Teddy. You too also.
ME?
That friend of Jane’s was just weird. Way too young. He need to find Midge again.
ME?
Me, me me?
hey loohoo — how ya doing?
happy 100 spocko!
YES ME! Woot! Confetti falls from the ceiling! The air raid sirens blown. Joanie from Mad Men comes over and gives me a kiss and a bottle of milk to drink like they do the winners of the Indy 500!
Suzanne breaths a sign of relief.
YOU!
Now to bed.
you give the best acceptance speeches dood *laughing*
g’nite spocko
no-fault insurance
Confetti!
nice
niters, spocko.
It’s still cold here, Suz. Long sleeves. (No such thing as climate change!)
I’m a little late to this thread, but thank you Suzanne. A drum kit, a killer bass line, a Hammond B-3, and lead pedal steel guitar. Billie Jean? Who’d a thunk? God, I loves me some YouTube. There are just too many great covers out there!!!!
champagne
Thanks (for having a sick sense of humor). I have all of Krall’s CDs and her three DVDs, I have zero (0) MJ anything except an ‘illegal’ mp3 file of Billie Jean. I still love your Sweet dejay play tonite.
hey roodster — how ya doing tonight? glad ya liked it
CUL8R, spocko & Peace
jen the bride who is now trying to make me a grandma grew up loving MJ — the way you make me feel is what her and her new hubby danced to at their wedding. i had a lot of exposure to MJ, early madonna, cindy lauper, etc during those pre-teen and teen years.
original version of Go Now
and the Moody Blues version
covers
Very nice! I’m out now, but thanks again Suz.
‘evening, all-
Anchored out in the Bay last night, digging thru some old records, I found this:
Carpet of the Sun
MODNOTE: edit link fixed
g’nite loohoo
*heh* ‘the bride’… How long’s it been since they got married…? Long honeymoon, perchance…? ;-)
hey rond — bet you sleep good last night! how ya doing?
Love it. Thanks!!
was 2 years ago end of may…
thank you so much for that original. I’d never heard it.
I heard the Moody Blues version and loved it and never figured ot why the hell i never heard anything else from them at all like it.
I walked up from the subway in NYC and Billie Jean was screaming on a Boombox/Third-World Briefcase. It was barely audible at the bottom of the steps, grew louder, I was dancing on the steps and danced across the street (Canal Street) to it, and I wasn’t a kid anymore then (1983). Dress You Up! I can’t wait for Diana Krall to cover that one. I loved Madonna. Yesterday I watched Kathleen Edwards playing fiddle for Brian Adams. “it’s all the same day!” – Janis Joplin.
The Banks version is very cool. Thanks. Have you ever heard Wilson Picket’s version of “Hey Jude” – Dwayne Allman is playing lead on it.
this one?
My friend that runs MB local health food store just returned from Tahiti honeymoon. How nice is that?
I’d seen Freddy before in my late nite tube travels. I also think he’s really good.
“I don’t do requests”
No but now I’m gonna go look for it. Thanks :)
Pretty fine, you? I’ve been putting a new floor in my brother’s boat, and some of the procedures are not acceptable in the close quarters of a marina, particularly grinding fiberglass and applying resins. So we anchored out in the bay, and hit it hard all day. Only been home for a couple hours.
Found an awesome little water side bar with “Buffalo Gatortail Bites”. I’ve been known to eat some gator, but…damn.
To. Die. For.
Hey CT keeps putting this stuff up. Interesting reacts from Pakistan official. Also good to know that most of the leaks were field reports by platoon sargents. The raids seem out of the protocal of rules of engagement where is that conversation?
must die
Yes!! But I think the first time I heard it was on a really crappy 45 and I had no idea who Dwayne was on it. As Chuck Berry famously remarked “it goes to show, ya never can tell.” lol
Today I think I got one maybe two puppies to contribute $$ to the FDL cause just by mentioning the notion of donating. Gave me the impression some posters aren’t aware, they’re not always lurking or participating when the hardliners make their pitches, or they’re not on the mailing list.
Hint hint.
i’m doing well thanks :) yuck — that’s tight quarters indeed
See Suzanne @ 131. :)
a lotta folks only think of donating when we do a donation drive. on the right of each page, near the top, we always have the donate here box and button
In my living room I keep a college classical radio station playing full-time (I never shut off my stuff) at a barely audible volume. I heard a great symphonic version of Hey Jude. I was like o wow.
Hi Margot this too funny sacred music Pink Floyd
LOL
She’s damn fast!
That version of the song ..soul-filling. Really thank you for that.
i used to love to watch wkrp — and dream of working at a cool radio station….
Yeah, I mentioned the donate here button. Who knows it’s there when they show up? They come for the chat, and if it’s double-digit comments, those boxes are way off screen by then. Someday soon I’ll click on yours. Promise.
London Symphony Orchestra
Hey Jude
Hi BB, your comments make me see beautiful seascapes and sunsets.
Speaking of donations my NP gets Exempt status this week. And I went to the Pres of a local bank chain today to get buy in for my homeless family mentoring program. He is on the board of a 4 decade old affordavle housing NP that has built 3000 units in the CA central coast. He promised to take my proposal to his board to support a mentoring and a Intern program for Grad students of Psych and Soc Sc. The idea is adopt a family the interns can do training for the Mentor volunteers.
oh yay for the good news bb
hiya Suz … firegoogles
Great find. I lived in Seattle and for awhile SF and miss the truly great FM stations of the late 60′s, early 70′s. KOL in Seattle and radio “Patty Hearst” in the City (KSAN – an inside joke.)
hey ppd — *laughing* how’s the south south bay tonight?
And Cinci is liberal rot in the rust/bible belt. Univ Of Oregon had a record shop the owner was from Cinci “Monkey House records” she was a Vonnegut fan. RIP
hey bb, hiya margot
By the way Suz reminder to get the landlady to schedule a therapy series for your aches and pains.
Hi PPDCUS good to see you on the lake. You come in late. You work til then?
i missed kpig something fierce when i moved to the oregon coast. i remember when ksan went country… boy did that send shock waves throughout the bay area…
thanks bb — she’s on vacation so i wont see her for several weeks
Thanks, RonD. That’s not what I heard. It was closer to this, maybe was this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JM86MfaS3vY&feature=related
just a long day
This one was soo unique… the bay surface was glass the evening star was centered directly West where I was heading…so calm and quite a few pelicans flying around the sand spit was in the shadows on the twilight. So the town lights were appearing stronger and they return row was looking into this dark blue sky with evening star in the center. Mother earth does give a show to those who pay attention.
such a pretty word picture bb
dock
dont know why
I live in Charlotte, NC. The FM offerings are shameful. One classical, zero jazz. ZERO. Just humpfuck, Spanish, and (deep voice) The Ride – old-time 70s but not long album cuts, nothing longer than 4:00. Fuckit, I listen in my other room (where I am) to a radio stream from France (via iTunes, streamed & then connected to the audio system).
crazy
on the coast i get one easy listening station, a spanish station (used to be a country station but they got bought out) and occasionally a classic rock station from portland but only can catch that when in tillamook — at home its utubes or the tunes in my ipod
Absolutely! Daylight also: I was watering the herbs – very hot month, little rainfall – and a Gecko that used to run from me leaped off the basil and onto the chives as I was sprinkle-watering the stems, like ‘Hi!’ and started lickig the droplets. It showed the pinkest, cutest tongue.
That performance – who doesn’t tear up?
I’d already left the City before the KSAN “switcheroo”, but Seattle suffered the same fate when they countrified KOL. Something they can never take away though are memories of Dusty Street and up here Maxanne Sartori who was a NW DJ way before her travels to Boston and then NYC. People sometimes mock the real DFH’s, but those were some pretty great years for music lovers. It was an eclectic time. When Bill Graham moved the Fillmore down to Market Street I acually saw Tower of Power, Miles Davis’s new rock/jazz group (of Witches Brew fame) and the Grateful Dead – all on the same night’s bill.
you dont know
ohmystars that musta been one hella show.
top with santana
dood.. that is forking sweet!!! thanks dood
Another Tower of Power fan, all right!
Awesome and Willie and Elvis w Diane wow thanks for sharing that
still young
Good nite all, good dreams
Forged in The Crucible. And now, here now. No coincidence.
g’nite margot
’bout time for me to head out myself. thank you for letting me spend a wee bit of time with you tonight, and for all the great tunes in tonight’s soundtrack.
g’nite all *le poof*
The wonderful Suzanne found the best YouTube version of that. I know, I spent a night at it until I found that one and downloaded it.
Was the Carousel on Market too. I saw some greats there.
Blessings, Suzanne, and thanks for all you do. Sleep and be well.
I agree with Suzanne – utube and ipod/mp3. FM seems to kinda suck at times no matter where you are. You might also try Pandora Radio – the genome project. It takes awhile to build up a musical list that mirrors your musical taste and you’ll have to fork over a small amount of coin. (Otherwise you deal with “are you still there?” interuptions and now a 40 hour per month listening time cap.) But I like how it works. And there’s lots of long play. (Think Van Morrison, Allman Bros, early Dylan, Grateful Dead, etc. if that’s your bent. Check it out. http://www.pandora.com
Haha, this French jazz radio station I listen to all the time right now is playing Willie Nelson and B.B. King’s Night Life. They ‘define’ jazz the way it jazz is.
Grove on
I’ d heard of the Carousel and remember seeing some posters and handbills, but I never went there or knew where it was. My favorite: “Winterland – just across the Great Highway (California 1) from the Pacific Ocean.”
Sleep well Suzanne thanks for hosting again with a bif G for grateful especially that version of Crazy expressing a special kind of suffering that goes with unrequited love or messed up relationships.
Thanks for the ride. Have a good day.
I know about Pandora – it doesn’t appeal to me. I could probably let my iTunes library play on random endlessly and die a happy guy. These days I’m grooving no end to a non-stop Internet stream (@ 192 kbps), via ITunes though it’s online for anyone, free, jazz/r&b/swing/pop, all considered ‘jazz’ at the home station. I love the fact that someone with great and intelligent taste makes the choices. Al Jolson and Aretha Franklin in the same hour.
I remember a hall by PCHwy on the beach and the Family Dog Chet Helms and Bill Graham.
Suzanne should get a Grammy if anyone deserves one.
There’s always #200
Go for it! I hit it last week. (Framed and on my wall now.)
Boz Skaggs for Bill Graham http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=so_4S9gZ20k
200 yes
Gone but not forgotten. Tomorrow is another day just could not resist the double.
Amazing how much she knows about music. Did you like BZ Make my life shine.
It’s been a long time since I was there, but I remember Winterland being in or near a kind of old, decrepit amusement park area at the west end of Golden Gate Park. And it was indeed just across the PC Highway from the Ocean beach. Maybe we’re talking about the same place.
Maybe this song rings http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkfJ3zMIlO0 Bob Seger is one off my favs with this great piano like Carol King and the great chorus and ruthm section. Baby your still the same!
I don’t comprehend. Did she link to it tonite? I don’t know what it is. I’m not hip. I only think I’m hip.
Went down there and was amazed by the people on acid staring into each others souls. But then I was not to hip It was like school in the Bay Area and we were the students getting the lessons.
That was mine cause of Bill Graham and early Boz Skaggs playing for them. My college girlfriend 10 years after liked him a lot.
The comments (and Amazon reviews) mention that Boz wasn’t included in the DVD of the old movie of that farewell concert. I keep forgetting to order it. I want it for Lydia Pense and Cold Blood and Barbara Mauritz.
Darn! I forgot to ask early enough if anyone has seen Melody Gardot perform. She’s touring Europe as we speak.
lol I probably shouldn’t laugh cuz I also met some pretty messed up people in those days. But your description for me is like walking into a Firesign theater scene. Almost impossible to describe. Thanks for the memory.
I didn’t think of myself as being messed up even as metaphor or dope slang. ‘Tripping’ was the locution. Now in retrospect I would call it ‘blessed’.
Over the rainbow Melody Garbot http://video.mail.ru/mail/galina.kazmina/1220/46356.html
Here Comes The Sun (little darling). Good morning to y’all. Be well and stay kind.
She does countless versions, each one very different. Read about her on wikipedia, a great bio (she’s like 25 or 26, you know Janis’s last age…).
She’s very nice to feel her vibrations thanks for the introduction. Apologies for my link which you can paste to get there. The site is in Russian or something like it.
Appreciate the heads up on iTunes live streams. I think I’ll try it. Here’s a memory for you as well. One night I saw Aretha Franklin at the Fillmore West and at the end of her set she brought out Ray Charles for 4 songs. The back-up band was King Curtis and the Kingpins and it included Cornell Dupree on guitar and a “wigless” Billy Preston on the B-3. The concert was recorded and later became a live album. But my real memory of the night was this very young black kid. He couldn’t have been more than 13 or 14 yo. And he spent almost the entire night perched on the lip of one of those huge Voice of the Theater on stage speakers they used in those days for vocals. He balanced himself by holding on to the vertical panels on either side of the box. I know he didn’t die that nite, but he’s probably deaf by now if he’s still alive. But that kid had a smile on his face that defined happy. I think I’d enjoy going out that way. lol Have a good one. Good night.
You found a good video, I watched it. The same take is on YouTube (& many others, in performance). Most of her output is original songs. Over The Rainbow is atypical, but it’s like her Signature number. I love her Jersey/Philly accent! I read a SF review of a live gig, the writer called her something like the hippest thing alive.
This one has a little gravy train waltz lilt in it. http://abcjazz.net.au/artist/melody-gardot ABC performance the bearded guitarist does nice backing. She says kiss me now damn she is romantic.
You Are Blessed! That’s a legendary performance. I knew about it, waited for the records. There are two, the Aretha performance and the King Curtis warm-up. Rolling Stone reviewed it and wet their pants writing about it. I have both also on CDs. I’m pretty sure I have them memorized, every note of them. Pretty Purdie played tubs. (“Now we need a player on the fatback drums…”) I thought Curtis would thrive and become a brilliant and great force (he’s the sax on those Coasters songs, like Yakkity-Yak). His playing of ‘I Stand Accused’ is literally – literally!- breathless! But he was killed by some fucken junkies shooting up in the hallway of one of his buildings he owned in NYC, while he was carrying an air conditioner into the building. They stabbed him and he died. A few months after you saw him. An unspeakable loss.
Here is her goodnight on my behalf. http://abcjazz.net.au/artist/melody-gardot have a great day.
The bio on that site is incomplete (but the videos are great!) – she was riding her bike and a Jeep Cherokee ran a light and smashed into her, nearly killed her. She learned about pain management/music therapy during her rehab. She’s still not whole, probably never will be. But who is?
