On Friday, Tom Tancredo wrote an op-ed in the Washington Times in which he called for the President’s impeachment.
Mr. Obama’s refusal to live up to his own oath of office – which includes the duty to defend the United States against foreign invasion – requires senators and representatives to live up to their oaths. Members of Congress must defend our nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Today, that means bringing impeachment charges against Mr. Obama.
This created a minor kerfuffle, but it’s not clear why. Republicans in Congress have been comparing Obama to Hitler since before he was inaugurated.
A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship.
“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press.
Part of what we’re trying to do in “Saving Freedom” is just show that where we are, we’re about where Germany was before World War II where they became a social democracy.
I didn’t vote for Barack Obama in 2008, but I sure would have voted for Thomas Sowell. This man, well, his article says quite a lot. His editorial, um, says here – and it’s just been posted this week – but it says, “When Adolph Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920′s…“
(Sarah Palin also endorsed the Obama-Hitler column.)
WALLACE: So — but you compare that [the Democrats and the Obama administration] to the Nazis and the Communists?
GINGRICH: I compare that as a threat.
Now, if these Republicans are telling the truth, and Obama is truly Hitler-like, he should absolutely be impeached, should he not?
My challenge to the media: the next time some Republican makes one of these offensive Obama/Hitler/Stalin/Mao/Lenin/Satan comparisons, ask him or her whether Obama should be impeached. Make them answer the question “yes” or “no.”
Can’t have it both ways.

Can’t happen. The MSM is in the tank for the Republicans. Softballs by day – cocktail weenies and quail wings by night. Must not embarrass a Republican. Reagan’s rule: never criticize a fellow Republican (even if that Social Conservative is caught stealing or soliciting sex!) Tax cuts create jobs (in China).
Republican projection.
Except they do, all the time. They are constantly denying they ever said things that are well documented, claiming quotes were taken out of context that weren’t, or that they didn’t mean what they explicitly said.
Although your challenge to the media is apropos in all those situations, as well.
They can put their money where their mouths are and reap the whirlwind.
Cuz their thingies are small. ;)
The Left loved to liken Bush, Cheney et al to Hitler, Nazis, etc., especially those phony “war” protestors.
Besides, isn’t Obama more of a Marxist than a Nazi?
Given that arch-loudmouth Tancredo is a nativist scumbucket with no class or decency to back up his obvious racism…well, who are we kidding? Judging by the response to the Sherrod sliming, Obama and his flunkies are shaking in their little boots and will soon be firing someone over this.
I think all Republicans should be asked if Obama should be impeached, whether they make Obama/Hitler/Stalin/Mao/Lenin/Satan comparisons or not.
I think a lot of Republicans will be trying to fly under the radar, like WA State loser Dino Rossi and his “GOP Party” signs. Some will want to be stealth teabaggers – on this issue (and a lot of others, too) they need to be put on the spot, on camera.
Under Bush, we were up to our waists in Fascism. Let us pray Obama can save some remnants of democracy.
Tancredo translation: ‘Impeach Obama. He’s a proven Ni**er.’
We need to quit f*cking about playing nice with proven bigots.
Dennis Kucinich wanted to impeach Bush, but he cleverly figured out that he’d better get rid of Cheney first. So he actually introduced articles of impeachment against the Veep, thereby wasting everyone’s time and making a fool out of himself yet again. I don’t think a single Democrat supported him, which gives you some idea of just how loony he is. But then, you already know that.
Nope, he’s definitely not a Marxist
See Robert Parry’s writings at consortiumnews.org.
When Clinton came into office after 12 years of Reagan/Bush secret wars and subversion of both congress and the will of the people, he refused to investigate anything that was done in order to move forward. The result? Impeachment of a sitting president for a blowjob (hat tip, Marcy on MSNBC).
Obama has steadfastly refused to investigate the crimes of the previous blatantly criminal administration. The result? This garbage.
Although I would like to see this lying president impeached for his war crimes in Pakistan and his refusal to follow US law by failing to investigate and prosecute war crimes of the previous war criminal-in-chief.
The Right loved Bush because he liked to spy on them, made them feel kinky!
Obama a Marxist? Have you EVER read Marx?? Obama is just another Democratic Leadership Council-type middle of the road liberal. For those of us who actually think of ourselves as socialists, he’s a capitalist.
As for Tancredo and the Washington Times, that paragon of “fair and balanced” reporting, Tancredo is so unaware of the historical and political realities. First off, an impeachment is a trial, which may or may not lead to the removal of an elected official. In this proposed case, it would be investigated by the House of Representatives, which might issue a bill of indictment, and if so, be tried by the Senate. Is his memory so short (that seems to be a Republican/conservative malady) that he’s forgotten the impeachment of Bill Clinton?
The Congress is currently in the control of the President’s party. It’s hardly likely to impeach the person considered the titular head of the party.
Even if the R’s take control of one of the houses in Nov, it’s not going to happen. It could only happen if they gain control, by wide margins, of both houses. Even then, the accusation Tancredo makes is groundless, from a constitutional standpoint. His grasp of the constitution is similar to that of many conservatives: he cherry picks the parts he likes, but disregards the parts that don’t support his beliefs or contentions. However, I think someone like Lindsay Graham would have something to say about such a prosecution, and it wouldn’t be favorable.
Tancredo is crawling farther and farther out on his whacked-out limb, and it will probably break under him before he can run for Prez (if that’s his intention).
Wash Times is second only to World Net Daily as a mouthpiece for this kind of bullshit drivel. It’s hard to believe that other more mainstream media outlets even give them credibility. Sad…..
I know.
Obama SHOULD have a press secretary like Rachel Maddow who politely disembowels every right wing talking point on a daily basis like a champion Oxford Parliamentary Debater (if you’re wondering where Rachel learned that trick from).
I don’t see a #6. Just not seeing it.
Bet you won’t be able to see #11 either.
I thought the Republican chant was Marxist Nazi Commie, or something like that.
I don’t know why the right doesn’t like Obama, he is doing exactly what they would have LOVED to do but couldn’t because they can’t mouth progressive phrases as cover.
Weird…Ive got a 6…something about Cheney, nothing to be moded, from waht I could tell
Please name 3 Democratic members of Congress who compared Bush to Hitler.
Maybe you set certain commenters to be blocked completely? (I think I’ve seen folks have that capability on some browsers)
Obama has taken Bush fascism and embraced and extended it. Far from putting on the brakes, Obama has pushed the accelerator. I do agree in that we are heading that way (since at least Bush), but I don’t know that when speaking in such generalities that there’s an impeachable offense. Like the other day I watched Conspiracy about the Nazi’s planning the holocaust and much of what the Nazis did was done under the cover of German law. The lawyer who wrote the racist Nuremburg Laws objected to what he was hearing, so the head of the meeting basically just said that the Nazis would ensure the courts would cooperate. I see the same thing being done now in regards to our Constitution being trampled on, but putting judges on the bench that make it all “legal” – like I see this with Kagan granting unlimited executive authority and by virtue of her position being the last word on Constitionality, so it’s not like a President can be impeached for something the Supreme Court has already blessed. When you have a politicized DOJ controlled by the WH, a compliant OLC and handpicked judges to give the President a rubberstamp, it’s quite a difficult legal situation in that the President can absolutely shred the Constition while at the same time being legally determined to have acted Constitionally, hence no grounds for impeachment. I see this as a very serious problem for our country irrespective of which political party occupies the Presidency.
He is being awfully quiet.
I think I’ve found Tancredo’s theme song. (Hell, works for most of the Republican party these days.)
What color is the sky in your world?
The only Bush/Hitler comparison, ever, was a member-submitted video to a Move-On.org contest that was on their website very briefly then taken down. It remains in the popular righty imagination, and has expanded to include huge, but imaginary, swaths of lefty Bush/Hitler comparisons that never existed.
Hitler, Marx, Stalin, and Mao have never had such a heyday in American political culture since the teabaggers brought them up after 1/20/09.
I didn’t say Congress members, I said “the Left.” As I’m sure you know, I was just referring to those placards that used to show up at those big anti-war rallies that used to happen all the time until Obama got elected and most of the Left suddenly changed their minds and decided that war wasn’t worth getting excited about.
What exactly is he using as an example of Obama not living up to this? Not nuking Iran? Not nuking Mexico? Not beheading anyone in his administration who suggests that maybe we don’t need to spend money on weapons the Pentagon doesn’t want or need?
And why am I even bothering asking whether Tom Tancredo has examples to back up his assertions? It’s just the usual “He’s a Democrat and we all know they’re traitors” bit, isn’t it?
Nice dodge of the question.
You can find cranks who say anything. The original post has quotes from three current Congrsesmen and one former. Don’t try the “both sides do it” until you can find something equivalent.
Which you can’t, because it doesn’t exist.
Yup, he ran from it.
Here’s the harsh reality:
The Republicans will get into the House and Senate, and they will go after impeachment full bore and it will be a big win for them.
Which leads to the following:
Why did we take impeachment off the table?
Why didn’t we start calling the Republicans out for what they are from the gitgo in 2009 instead of embracing them closer than our own base?
We’re out of time to get the message out about what total a$$holes the Republicans truly are, and we’ve let them steal the narrative over and over about the evils of big government and how we support the Wall St bailout.
The truth was Obama had to go FDR on their asses right from the gitgo in January 2009, and we brayed at him repeatedly all through 2009 to get on with it, but no, what do we know, we’re all f&*king ret^&ded!*
*And I’m terribly sorry I had to use that term again, but that’s how the base that got this man elected has been treated, and the truth is that it was all Dean’s doing and Rahm so fucking stupid, he doesn’t deserve to eat Howard’s shit off the floor. But what do I know?
You didn’t mention them because they don’t exist.
I think that Tom is paving the way for an impeachment when (and if) the Republicans take back the House. If you think that Obama is gun shy now, wait until Fox news gets a hold of this. Obama may be very intelligent, but he has no Balls.
And the previous Republican vice presidential nominee.
Don’t misunderstand, I don’t approve of anybody calling anyone Nazis. I think Tancredo is a jerk and an embarrassment. He’s as nuts as Kucinich is.
Jeez, I never said they did.
Our Gestapo-like security force was established with the Patriot Act, which the President endorsed and renewed. It is not Marxist but it is neo-con fascism. There is an 800,000 strong Gestapo secret army that does a fine job of suppressing the Left.
The President has also protected the war criminals and war crimes of the neo-cons.
But even as the R’s impeach the President, he will reach out to them and meet them halfway.
Novel conflation of lies these Republicans concoct.
European democracies, including Germany, attempted to ameliorate the brutal consequences of a horrendous war and the social effects of unregulated capitalism by adopting programs to help the vast majority of their citizens: education, jobs, unemployment and old age relief, improved access to healthcare, etc.
The old, conservative guard in countries such as Germany and Italy fought such moves, preferring centralized control and the dominance of a single individual. Aiding and abetting their efforts were trade and debt moves that heavily depressed the global economy, many sponsored by the United States.
A complex series of events led to the rise of Hitler and Mussolini, and further complex events led to global war and destruction. But it’s the social programs that caused all the problem, not the ambitions or destructions of ruthless millionaires and power hungry autocrats. Hahahahaha.
As a historical thesis, it is laughable; its accuracy is as false as that portrayed in Henry Ford’s favorite work, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. As a political strategy, it aims at dominance over and destruction of the middle class – via war, depression and surveillance. It’s what the GOP and a few Democrats would like to bring to 21st century America.
Tancredo has it wrong, like Obama himself. A president’s oath is not to defend the country. It is to defend the Constitution.
I can’t come to terms with the ignorance of just about everybody graduating from high school on this matter. I figure Tancredo may or may not know, but hold him responsible because he should know and in fact that is his oath, too. But Obama? He took the oath twice and then said in his Nobel-should-have-declined-the Peace Prize speech that his job was to protect the country.
They are all a pack of liars and thieves.

I would like to just say: ignore ignoramuses like Tancredo, but given the current climate & the way things operate, I’m now advocating for standing up & calling out b.s. like this. All I see from Repubs is “Obama must be impeached” and that’s followed by highblown rhetoric that doesn’t spell out the what/why of impeaching BHO. Look, I’m no huge fan of Obama, but I can see no reason for impeachment, other than idiotic Repubs, who have done nothing useful in the past 2 decades (except for the obscenely wealthy, of course), vetching about it.
Nonetheless, it’s a given that the Dittoheads will pull out their pitchforks to vetch and whine about how the BHO gov’t is “ruining” their lives without givine one solitary concrete reason as how the BHO gov’t is ruining things.
Same old, same old. I guess, at least, with Clinton there was an action that could be pointed to… something that really did happen. That Repubs thought it was super GREAT thing to waste millions of their tax dollars on an exercise in futility – this from the party constantly whining and vetching about the “intrustion of big gov’t” into their lives – over a stupid blowjob. The waste of it all. Bunch of whining babies, but we saw what happened last year at the Town Halls.
So yeah: let’s stand up against nonsense like this that just points to more Republican waste of time and MY tax dollars. For eff’s sake…
“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Um, don’t see anything about invasions…
P.S. there have been plenty of anti-war protests since BHO was elected. It’s just that the coporate owned rightwing media has chosen not to report on it AT ALL. There were quite a few anti-war rallies around the country on the anniversary (March 23??) of the beginning of the Iraq War (you know: the one that Rummy promised would be over in six months & the Iraqi citizens would greet us with rose petals. Remember that??? Yeah, me ‘neither). There was definitely a large rally in Sacramento, CA that I attended, plus one in San Francisco and LA. I believe that there were other rallies around the country that day.
But no, these were never reported on. So it only *looks like* the so-called “left” isn’t protesting the wars. We are; we just not given the optics. Why? Well, I’m betting it’s so Dittoheads – having excoriated the left for protesting the war while Bush was POTUS – can NOW excoriate the left for NOT protesting the wars bc so-called “Democrat” is POTUS.
Dittoheads are easily and predictably manipulated by the uber wealthy via their media outlets and their talking head shills, aka RushGlennSarah.
So, here we go again if the republcians take congress. another impeachment dog and pony show, with US footing the bill and absolutely NOTHING getting done.
“NOTHING getting done”
That’s a feature rather than a bug. The last time around the Clinton impeachment stopped him from doing a deal with Republicans to cut Social Security and if Obama was impeached, it could stop the Sovereign Debt Default Commission from doing the same thing (provided that it isn’t voted on during the lame duck session). I’d rather have nothing getting done than things like cutting Social Security and corporate welfare to the healthcare industry.
I don’t think they honestly believe that about Obama. I think they just like to say it because they’re hoping it’ll piss off all the Obama-supporters. Its just spitefulness. I ignore it these days. They might be horny for his impeachment, but the comparisons to these dictators are really just theatrics to anger people. And it tends to work every time. :p
A good Marxist wouldn’t wipe their feet on Obama. But we would like to know where you live comrade so we can send you our indoctrination material.
In my opinion, claiming you can assassinate American citizens with absolutely no due process is an impeachable offense.
Guess we won’t have much discussion of that though, huh?
Give the right wing devils their due. They’ve played Obama like a fine Stradivarius. No public option in the healthcare plan, an emissions cap bill with no caps, and firing government employees based on half a speech taken out of context. Now when 2014 rolls around and people are ordered to buy health insurance, the right will be there to demonize us for being in the pocket of insurance companies. I’m starting to wish Hillary was president, maybe our best man was a woman.
