When our sideshow news cablists, the White House, the NAACP and others began their carnival barking outside Andrew Breitbart’s tent once again – this time echoing Brietbart’s slander of Shirley Sherrod – the predictable puerility followed. The White House apologized and blamed the media culture, Fox News denied its role, pundits claimed the high ground and called for Sherrod’s reinstatement. The NAACP’s quick admission – “we were snookered” – was the only adult behavior around.
It’s a rare day that Sarah Palin, the Klondike Queen of Kooks, doesn’t get a front-page turn on Huffington Post. Left, Right, Middle or Ozone, commentators of all stripes are mesmerized by the Right. No matter how nutty, nasty or distant from reality, the extremists talk and the whole political sphere gets all rubbernecked.
I’ve fought white conservatives’ annual voter suppression and intimidation campaigns for decades in the South. It was and is hard to get attention on the issue. But let a couple of black guys dressed up as New Black Panthers hang around an African-American polling place in Philadelphia, and FoxNews has America thinking the Liberty Bell down the street has finally fallen apart.
When CBS News’ Bob Schieffer somehow avoided the Right’s hypnotists on this unscandal and failed to make it a subject on “Face the Nation,” Fox’s Megan Kelly was so shocked she attacked Schieffer on the air. That’s how accustomed the Right is to having its daily way with the minds of America’s newsies and pundit class.
I can’t bring myself to say much about Drudge, except how in the hell is it that college-educated journalists let themselves be drug around by the nose by the idiot? Where is their self-respect? Where is their judgment? Where is their common sense?
It’s not enough to pin the blame on the Right’s legendary message machine, the noisy blog-to-talk-to-Fox-to-talk-to-blog circle of hate. By all rights it ought to be a classic closed system. But there’s something else afoot here, Holmes.
How is it that the Right has mesmerized the American media, including some in the Left-leaning media? Part of the answer lies in the great moral leveling of the media itself. The elimination of authentic moral considerations in reporting reduces everything to mushy he said/she said. Anything goes, so long as it’s entertaining.
Political news has been Jerry Springer-ized. This is an old and very un-Springery observation. It remains relevant. Clowns play better than statesmen in today’s news. Everybody knows it, but few do anything about it. Success comes to those with empty heads, no moral compass, and the gift of self-delusion.
There’s a folk legend that hypnosis can’t make anyone do something they’re opposed to morally. If that is the case, America really is in moral danger. Or, more accurately, America is danger because of its moral vacuity.
Cultural memory is essential to social ethics, and America is losing its memory. The Right is busy re-writing the Constitution, confident that very few Americans know what it is. The extremists have yet to find a way to justify torture, domestic spying, federal intervention in our bedrooms, and government control of women’s bodies while prohibiting federal enforcement of the commerce clause. However poor their reasoning, however fact-free their arguments, the major media continues to afford them the benefit of the doubt.
History and memory. They are key to understanding the Right’s hypnotic power over today’s media. The New York Times has a story today about China’s murderous occupation of Tibet. The parallels with the European conquest of the Americas are striking. Really striking. So striking that they ought to be mentioned. But they are not.
That, I think, is a clue to Right’s mesmeric power. History is assigned to another bureau. It is someone else’s beat. The Right gets this, and it promises journalists what logic tells us is impossible: a place in history that requires the erasure of history.
The person who, like Emerson, wants to pierce the rotten diction that is the lifeblood of destructive fantasy is, well, little more than a drag, a bummer, out of touch with the power of anti-history while looking to the lessons of history for some sign of justice.

Take the log out of our own eye before you go pointing that finger at too many other news outlets that are transfixed on the right. Every weekday morning, Blue Texan regurgitates whatever Rachel and friends had on the night before. Most of the time responding or reacting to some right wing attack.
Oh, that Megan Kelly. Silly Rabbit, tricks are for kids. Maybe Megan needs a good shot of Grow Up Girlfriend. It did give Bob an opportunity to rebut, though.
Blue Texan is not Glenn Smith. If you want to read some great fair and non judgemental writing, Glenn is here every Sunday morning at 9:30 am. Blue Texan has his own lovely style and I enjoy reading him every morning too.
What a great post. And that quote really sums up the sorry state we’re all in today.
What’s worse, empty headiness now not only brings success, it is openly lauded as a virtue by many while intellectuals are ridiculed.
Sometimes I feel like I’m living in Orwell’s novel.
Thanks, demi. In addition, there is often a legitimate need to knock down the lies of the Right. Approached correctly, it means opposing them with our frames, not repeating theirs. There’s some art to this — I’m certainly not intending some absolutist stone wall of the Right. That’s not possible. But we can, as folks here do, remain AWAKE.
Glenn, did you mean your fifth word to read “cabalists”? Now you’ve got me making a mental list of taxi companies. *g*
Thanks, OFG. Imagine yourself in a library leaping away from Orwell!! Charles Olson’s books — progressive poetry — are on the shelf to the left.
(And poor you, with only one channel on your internet machine every weekday morning.)
Thanks, Glenn, your Sunday sermons are my church. I really love what you have to say and how you say it. You are a preacher of the old-school. And mesmerized is EXACTLY the right word for the shiny-object nature of our distracting right-wing. I mean, how many stories were there this week about the collapse of the energy/environment bill in the United States Senate (an eventuality that may actually doom our planet and species) versus the Breitbart-invented Shirley Sherrod kerfuffle?
Think about why that might be. There’s your answer — it is in the interest of powerful interests that Americans be distracted by our Idols, our Next Top Models, our Survivors: that we actually be mesmerized by right-wing tropes and memes, in order that the powerful interests’ interests are not challenged head on.
Thank you, sir.
Actually, I meant it as a pun. Maybe should have written “cable-ists,” but I went with the non-hyphenated and maybe too obscure a wordplay….
For instance, in her conversation about race this morning on CNN, Candy Crowley has decided to revisit Joe Biden’s commentary about Barack Obama’s being ‘articulate, bright, and clean — a nice-looking guy.’
.
That’s the operative phrase. The right wing is mesmerizing because they create a better story.
I was uplifted by the extent of the positive response to Shirley Sherrod’s authentic story. of a segment of our history. It gives me optimism if we can endure with good writing and speaking through the voices of those who write and experience history we can perhaps overwhelming this rotting pornography the right presents as history..
Aaargh…..
Yes, the turnaround on Sherrod was as heartening as her knee-jerk firing by the hypnotized was disheartening. Sleepers Awake!
Good morning, Glenn. Very nice post. Your first paragraph says it all. Nobody takes any responsibility for anything. The NAACP was snookered but why? They have to ability to find out the truth of things before they act. I’m sorry they got pulled into this mess but even there, it’s truly their own fault. The wingers have the ear of the press and the Dems are clueless about messaging. The truth is out there somewhere but no one’s looking.
Do you ever have anything constructive to say? Even on a post wishing Jane a Happy Birthday there you are whining about what the Lake does not do to meet your expectations.
Maybe I just need more coffee.
BTW, if you have a chance later, you may want to take a look at Phoenix Women’s post from yesterday morning. There was a great discussion about the media. DW Bartoo wrote a wonderful take on why so many people enjoy listening to the loud rants of the righty big mouths. In part, he said
Rev Bev’s comment certainly goes to the heart (if that is the proper term) of what should be a major social psychology concern, as it confronts the issue of how or why many people are willing to suspend their own judgment (and diminish their own humanity in the process) of accepting the assertions of those who are clearly unbalanced and cunning practitioners of deceit and manipulation.
Those who feel marginalized and powerless, at the mercy and whim of powers and coercions beyond their certain understanding and, often, control, if they are so circumscribed in their sense of themselves as to have no clear idea of WHO they actually are, having never been encouraged to find out, respond quickly to firm, certain, and usually LOUD individuals who DO seem in control, who DO seem powerful, and most import, who DO seem concerned about the plight of those who are easily frightened but also, resentful at what they perceive as institutional or societal “unfairness”.
Megan’s transparent inanity was more transparent than ever, and she did herself no good by attacking Schiefer, who is considered an affable, likeable, competent journalist by many.
another good read,on point

Right on, and thanks for the link. I’m busy moving, so I missed the post. I’m repeating the link here, ’cause readers need to check it out.
Thanks for bringing this forward. I would add the notion that telling our story through human experience is a way of helping folks to discover their own identity as human beings capable of compassion, generosity, community as a counter to the right’s radical selfish individualism.
The insanity you describe so well will end badly for America. Our current war against the world will surely end with a nuclear blast in a U.S. city. It’s time to get out of the burning building we call “The United States.”
ITS why they loved empty head/suit…Coo Coo BANANNAS bUSH
Great and important point, TalkingStick. And put about as succinctly as I’ve ever seen it put. Please, visitors, read and re-read TalkingStick’s comment.
I’ve always wondered why anybody gives them the time of day. Like any attention seeking child, as long as people are paying the attention they crave, there is no reason for them to change their behavior.
Exactly right TalkingStick. It’s about entertaining!
And what do you do if you want to stop the entertainment?
1) Make it un-entertaining
2) Make it un-profitable
3) Make it in-effective
Media Matters is doing a good job of documenting the atrocities. And then they passed it off to Color of Change who used my techniques of alerting the advertisers (NOT A BOYCOTT!) so they can protect their brand. They did it with Beck. He has lost 81 advertisers and is not subsidized by Fox.
But is it possible to make it in-effective?
Remember how the Obama admin had the rapid response about rumors and smears during the campaign? That group was dismantled after the election.
What if they were still plugged in and the second that the smears started rolling get on the phone, email, twitter to the usually MSM who have to report on the “controversy” and point out facts. And if they don’t knock down the story in their story, to keep hammering on them.
If we all read it out loud together, it will make a nice Affirmation of Faith for this morning’s gathering. Amen!
((TalkingStick))
Here’s me reciting it!!
I am honored. :-).
Donna Brazile on one of the talks this morning made the point that a profound difference that continues to come between the races is their different understanding of the history of the races in this country. We need more honest conversation.
Here in this place, new light is streaming
now is the darkness vanished away,
see, in this space, our fears and our dreamings,
brought here to you in the light of this day.
Gather us in the lost and forsaken
gather us in the blind and the lame;
call to us now, and we shall awaken
we shall arise at the sound of our name.
We are the young – our lives are a mystery
we are the old – who yearns for you face.
we have been sung throughout all of history
called to be light to the whole human race.
Gather us in the rich and the haughty
gather us in the proud and the strong
give us a heart so meek and so lowly
give us the courage to enter the song.
Where is their self-respect?
This is what i really, srsly don’t get.
Then again, i feel it about Obama and the whole political class.
Great post, every word spot-on, thx.
One thing about the right wing media stories is that they have a certain kind of ‘non-heavy” “let’s get the popcorn” feel. And that is appealing.
If we want we could create stories like this too. But so often we think that the press will want to do “real stories” about torture and foreclosures and hunger. But they really don’t want to. Because those are serious. And they require talking to experts. And they are a downer.
When I hear people talk about creating stories, they think that you just expose some serious stuff and boom the press comes to the door.
The creation of a narrative that gets picked up isn’t always the best story. In my career I’ve helped create hundreds of narratives and helped a lot of people tell their story. And what they think makes and interesting story isn’t always what IS an interesting story.
I’ve offered to educate people on this, and train people on our side to do, but nobody is interested, even when I point out my track record of creating national and international news. For example right now NetRoots Nation is happening. How many big stories are coming out of there?
Did anyone even think to prepare for and plant some? No. Because they still think that the Press care about serious stories.
Of course, sometimes Springer gets it correct.
A few years ago when Dubya was on his “let’s destroy Social Security to save it” tour, he hit the Tampa area. Most all the local TV stations provided live coverage except for one that didn’t have a news section. That one showed the Springer show. I’ll never forget Jerry’s topic that day:
I’ve never been real clear which stations actually had more truth speaking that afternoon.
Gorgeous Gov. Sarah Palin is right on the issues, right for America. She is very interesting & exciting. That’s why HuffPo gives her lots of play.
Beautiful! May I use it on some of my web pages?
It’s from the United Methodist Hymnal, The Faith We Sing.
*snort* *gag*
They think they will get it from corrupting and throwing mud on others then claiming superiority. Never works for long. Then when confronted with their own venality throw it off with “everybody is that way.” And the common perception of what humans are like drops another notch.
It is wonderful but I know is under copyright So will keep it just for myself. Thanks.
There are some you tubes of the song… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZVCbXiSYFk . Haunting melody.
I bet that the composure would give you permission to use part of it. Many of those musicians are happy to share their gifts.
I messed up. I’ll try again, because it really is a pretty song.

OMG ROFLMAO!!!!!!!
whew boy, long time since I laughed that hard.
LOL
right on the issues….. 707!
Well, well. Palin’s mouthpiece has a Lake account. Who knew? Thanks for the input….Todd.
And beautiful? Not likely with the coldest eyes I have ever seen.
Sure haven’t seen any evidence of inner beauty.
Great. That means it can be embedded. I am on the way to see it.
And governor? It would be more accurate to describe her as a former half term governor who quit to make more money on the teabag circuit.
Good column today by MoDo, IMO.

This blog is no different regarding Palin and the rest – they fart and you all trip over yourselves to talk about it. Comrade BT is particularly taken when it comes to Palin.
And this obsession by you all and the rest of left wingnuts just further solidifies them in the eyes of the right wingnuts and Palin and similar ilk just laugh all the way to the bank.
*snort* Actually, they’re fun to laugh at on slow news days. The folks who come to her defense all puffed up an’ shit are even funnier.
Have to disagree. It’s a good idea to always put light on dark, slimy places. If what she says isn’t shown for the farce it is, then her words stand. Not going to happen.
And yet you, who constantly badmouth people who spend time here, constantly spend time here….
“How is it that the Right has mesmerized the American media,……”
The Right owns the media Mr. Smith. They use it to mesmerize the people. The Right owns things too numerous to mention including the Democratic and Republican Parties.
The Right is our ruling class. Keeping us divided has high priority lest we rise up and overthrow them. When 1% have everything, 99% will have nothing.
The institutional values of News media are more similar to right wing values. Shallow, amoral, hyper emotional and celebrity driven.
Driftglass and Bluegal podcast from yesterday is good.
I can now happily retire Caribou Barbie and Bible Spice for an even more spot on name.
One gets what one pays for. The bought and paid for media (print and broadcast) is easily purchased … of, by and for… the wealthy.
The Republicans and Democrats currently in charge are certainly beholdend to the wealthy. If you own the megaphone, your opinion is the only one heard. Obama once spoke for the poor; however, he now holds the megaphone and is certainly speaking for the wealthy. Unless… fu*k it, there is no unless. The golden rule is now revised… the man with the gold rules.
We could bunch together and purchase CBS. But then again, once we had a level of success, we’d change our minds and have Ann Coulter on as news spoksmodel beside Katie Couric. It’s the way the world turns. John Lennon is turning over in his grave. The grand experiment called Democracy seems to have been short-circuited.
Anyone want to bunch together with me to purchase CBS? It’s worth a try.
~~sproing!~~~
“Anything goes, so long as it’s entertaining.”
I agree that’s the “crux of the biscuit” (to borrow a phrase from Frank Zappa). In a culture where financial profit (and ONLY financial profit) = success, corporate media believes it has no option except to vie for ratings and the advertising revenue which accompanies them. Journalistic standards are quickly abandoned whenever it looks as if Rupert Murdoch is about to “win the news cycle”. The recent exchange between O’Reilly and Maddow highlights this mindset: Bill-O’s rant was all about how he gets the ratings. He made no assertions of truthfulness or accuracy, only a larger viewing audience.
Denizens of the blogosphere, on the other hand, are compelled to fixate on the antics of right-wing media clowns because of the undue influence they appear to have over the decision-making process both in Congress and the White House. We do not voluntarily partake of Beck, Limbaugh, Fox, Drudge, etc., but it is absolutely necessary to de-bunk all of their idiotic assertions AT ONCE, or else watch our government take decisive action based upon bull-puckey. We saw ACORN de-funded by a Congress under the influence of a right-wing fraud. That didn’t prevent Shirley Sherrod from losing her job as a result of yet-another fraud from the same players. Why? Because the administration was fearful that if they didn’t act immediately, they would be targeted by Glenn Beck. So, fear of criticism by Glenn Beck rules the Obama administration’s decision-making process, unless someone steps up and changes the equation with an injection of truth.
If the Obama administration and Congressional Democrats could find or develop some intellectual and moral integrity and ignore the corporate media clowns, the rest of America would find them much less interesting.
They don’t even have to ignore them. Just refute their validity and not just react. If CNN could by the next morning after her firing get a Shirley Sherrod rebuttal, research her background, and get exculpatory interviews by her alleged victims’ certainly the great powers of the US government could have done it even sooner.
They could even consider putting on an entertaining show on another network opposite Glenn Beck. Too bad Al Franken is busy in the Senate.
The media is fixated by the Right for the same reason it is fixated anything else in our hyped-up culture — because it is extreme and there is the frisson of “just how far will these folks go”. And each extreme move becomes the “new normal”. Morality disappears because that which is extreme pulls attention in our culture. Just look at the lefty bloggers fixation on Glenn Beck, O’Reilly, Limbaugh, and all of the talkers that have polluted our political culture. And how little attention is paid to practical proposals to end run the national media and use our personal networks and ability to generate local buzz to counteract the national buzzing in people’s heads.
I would prefer to completely ignore all of these corrupt craven clowns, but given that the powers that be (no matter which side of the aisle they sit on) are easily mis-led by the b.s., lies and general hokum, I feel that we have to pay attention and shine a light on the more egregious stuff.
Some years ago, the general “drill” was to just ignore the rightwing jabberwocky and take the high road. It really didn’t work out so well, bc ignoring it all ended up being twisted into a kind of “complicity” with it.
I would much prefer to never have to know or speak about RushGlennSarah ever again, but the corporations have pushed them forward as their front”men” shills. We are forced to pay some attention and to respond at times. It’s just the way it is.
I’m trying to put myself in Shirley Sherrod’s shoes. This is somewhat difficult due to the happy fact that I grew up as an upper middle class white kid in the suburbs north of New York City. When we went on vacation we didn’t go by car – we went in a private plane that was owned by my dad! I am at a loss to explain to you how I became as left-of-center as I am. I’m sure that my youthful obsession with people like John Lennon and Dick Gregory had something to do with it. They were both accused by J.Edgar Hoover of corrupting the minds of the impressionable youth of this grand and glorious land of ours. Blame it on those guys.
I didn’t grow up (as Shirley Sherrod did) as a poor black kid in the south. I wasn’t surrounded on all fronts (as Shirley Sherrod was) by the vile sort of prejudice that told her, day after day, that she was not worthy to drink out of certain water fountains or eat in certain restaurants or use certain rest rooms. When my father died he was at home in a comfortable bed, surrounded by family and friends. Shirley Sherrod’s father was murdered – shot in the back by a Klansman who was never even brought to trial. Had I been raised under the same circumstances as Shirley Sherrod, I would not today be a mere Progressive – I would be a freaking bomb-throwing revolutionary, are you kidding me? You might, too, would you dare to know yourselves better The very fact that Shirley Sherrod was able to overcome her own racism is a testament to the woman’s character. Let’s all raise a glass in her honor. Cheers!
