Why does our wonderful corporate media unquestioningly push seemingly every right-wing smear that comes down the pike? Why do they continue to pretend that there is no such thing as truth, just a strange sort of “balance” that always seems to skew in favor of promoting lies and hiding the truth? Cowardice and complicity.
Cowardice, because the journalists and editors in a position to stop it don’t dare. Complicity, because the reason they don’t dare is that they know the folks who sign off on their paychecks are themselves right-wing corporatists for the most part.
We have already seen a major taste of this earlier this week, in the eagerness with which “respectable” media went and treated the Fox-promoted emanations of Andrew Breitbart — a known fabulist — as if they were the unimpeachable Word of God. Now we have the hyperventilating over the as-yet unproved ethics allegations directed against Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY), whereas another scandalous story somehow never made it from Politico’s pages to any of the evening news shows, much less got plastered all over every web ISP’s front page and news site portal:
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) has turned over e-mails to federal authorities investigating Sen. John Ensign’s extramarital affair with a campaign aide, the latest sign that the criminal probe into the embattled Nevada Republican is picking up steam.
Coburn told POLITICO that he is cooperating with the Justice Department in the investigation of Ensign, and says he’s willing to submit himself to an interview with the FBI or Senate Select Committee on Ethics, which is conducting a parallel investigation into whether Ensign broke Senate rules.
[...]
After he admitted to his affair with Cynthia Hampton [the wife of former Ensign aide Doug Hampton], Ensign has been hit with a series of damaging revelations that suggest he may have taken extraordinary — and potentially illegal — steps to conceal the episode. Investigators are looking into a $96,000 payment his parents made to the Hamptons, potentially as a severance package that he would have been required to report under federal disclosure laws. And after Doug Hampton left his office as a high-level Senate aide, Ensign helped him start a lobbying career, including arranging clients and meetings — potentially flouting a federally required cooling-off period in which former staff is prohibited from lobbying.
A federal grand jury has also subpoenaed the National Republican Senatorial Committee and several Nevada credit-card companies, looking for information on whether Ensign offered to help the firms on legislative issues in return for donations to the committee.
[...]
In 2008, Doug Hampton asked Coburn for his help in getting financial restitution from Ensign, who, Hampton said, aggressively pursued his wife and left his family in financial shambles.
“This was at the request of Tom Coburn and some people to try and help them manage John,” Hampton said last year on the Las Vegas political talk show “Face to Face.”
“I didn’t talk to John Ensign personally at all. Our attorneys did talk,” Hampton said. “Our attorneys absolutely talked, because Sen. Tom Coburn asked and was involved in these negotiations out of good will and good faith.”
Doug Hampton confronted Ensign in February 2008 at the Christian fellowship home on Capitol Hill where Ensign, Coburn and several other lawmakers lived. When news of Coburn’s involvement in the scandal leaked, the Oklahoma Republican initially accused Hampton of lying about his role in the incident.
Then Coburn made the unusual claim that his conversations with Ensign were “privileged” because he is a physician and ordained deacon. But Coburn later backed off that assertion. Coburn then admitted that he had known about the affair for more than a year, but still downplayed his actions.
Anyone here doubt that if Coburn or Ensign had “D”s after their names, this would have shoved Rangel out of the lead story slots last night? Yet I’ll bet that unless you’re a resident of Nevada or Oklahoma, or a regular Politico reader, this is the first you’ve heard of it.

Where did Breitbart come from? I saw him mid-week on the ABC morning show. Rude & loud. I did not see it all, but looked like Stephan. took him on. I had not known anything about him…
Ya wanna had “thing” to the second sentence? Just showing you that I actually read your posts, cutie. *g*
I would be pleasantly surprised if this actually led to Breitbart’s being shunned. But if Fox itself hasn’t been shunned, and if CBS can align itself with the Moonie Times, somehow I doubt that will happen.
Thanks!
It would have been even nicer if I had actually typed “add” instead of “had”, ha.
I thought Rachel (Madam) Maddow did a pretty good job smacking down Mr. O’Reilly on Thursday night. For anyone who didn’t see it, here.
I do agree with your central tenet. Why is the Rangel stuff front page news, but the Ensign stuff not?
How come “family values” guys who are always trying to impose their view of morality (which they don’t seem to apply to t themsleves) on the rest of us, can violate the trust of their families with impunity; but live and let live guys like McGreevey and Spitzer have career ending moments of they get caught violating their family’s trust?
Why do the hypocrits get off scott free and the non hypocrits get their lives destroyed?
You’d think the hypocrisy would rachet up the media swarm instead of the orher way around.
If a Dem had a “wide Stance” in a midwest airport, you’d never hear the end of it.
Further, how is it that the subsidized rent at the C Street House (subsidized by a religious group with a political agenda no less) is NOT the focus of an ethics inquiry, but Rangel’s rent stabilized apartmetns are?
Rent stablization is a program that’s been around for decades (though, in fairness, I’m pretty sure it’s one rent stabilized apartment to a customer). The rent subsidy that Ensign, Coburn, et al get, is not part of a legal program, it’s just a bribe.
“media unquestioningly push seemingly every right-wing smear”. for the reasons you give, and they do it by pretending the Back Story, which could be considered the Real Story, doesn’t exist. So they report an accusation against Al Gore but ignore the question of who is trying to smear Gore and why, as if that story didn’t exist and was not news.
They play dumb (and sometimes they really are dumb)
All really good questions. Something about the log in their own eye? And, the endless lies and scheming after the “cheating” is the worst. It didn’t work out well for John Edwards, did it?
“Now we have the hyperventilating over the as-yet unproved ethics allegations directed against Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY)”
With this one statement you lose all credibility in your article. Go take your medicine.
And, in the whiny cry baby category, Gonzalez takes first place. Where’s that wonderful crying baby photo?
While channel surfing yesterday, I caught a small portion of Howard Kurtz on cnn defending Fred Barnes on a spiel he’d done on the “liberal media” conspiracy. Puh-lease. What liberal media. What conspiracy.
Rangel is no more or no less corrupt than the 534 others sitting on capitol hill.
Agree or disagree, but please don’t be mean. Heat getting to ya?
you know, I often tell everyone reagan was probably worse then bush because without reagan there couln’t have ever been a bush
I now believe I can say that about clinton, allowing the consolidation of media to continue falls squarely on the back of clintion, without that there is no rush, no hannity, no savage, no fox
I wonder if he realises the damage he caused
Has anyone done a study on what = the appeal of those folks? Savage is beyond cruel, maybe irrational, imo. Hannity gets something & will not let go; is it perseveration? Loud and nutty. Yet, apparently plenty of folks want to listen to these rants….what is that about?
Exactly. I’m not saying “don’t probe Charlie”; I am saying “Hey, news media, why are you ignoring what both Ensign AND Coburn did?” And does anyone believe that Coburn’s involvement in the Ensign cover-up didn’t bend the law, if not break it?
And don’t even get me started on McGreevey. Right as he was being crucified on national TV over one long hot summer, another elected official, David Dreier, was accused of having his boyfriend on the public payroll, just like McGreevey was. And while this accusation would lead to his congressional career’s stalling out for being, ahem, “moderate”, he still not only got to keep his job, but was effectively “un-outed” by the mainstream press.
perris, politicians are akin to those drivers whose actions cause “accidents” for other drivers … the guilty “party” emerges unscathed, unaffected and convinced that they are the absolute “best” and most considerate drivers or politicians in the world.
Politicians have the added benefit of living well whatever their misdeeds, as they will, always, have their staunch defenders and lucrative possibilities among those who seek their influence.
You will note that Bill Clinton is doing very well … and Barack Obama wants to be just like him.
Damage, destruction left in their wake?
It’s all OUR fault.
Isn’t that the bottom line with the hole in the Gulf?
And consider, the “endless” (and profitable) wars that are bleeding this nation of principle and treasure … are “waged” in our names, and history will hold US responsible, not ANY American politician …
On the pleasant front: Good morning (I saw this last evening) firegods!
DW
WOW-just googled “Coburn Ensign”- and received 15 news results. Rangel: over 1100 stories. That is ABSOLUTELY outrageous news bias. If anything, it should be the inverse. Rangel is only being investigated by the house itself, and risks at most losing his job, and being banned from all public office in the future. In the Ensign affair we have a CRIMINAL, FBI probe that could lead to prison. We receive some major new developments on that front, and the news media tunes out. Talk about bias- it is extraordinary!
Last night Newshour had book discussion on the topic of war, the excitement, etc….very discouraging….mentioning young men who want to go fight and old men who want to send them….How crazy is that?
Hey you! I just almost asked where you were ’cause I wanted to hear your take on Bev’s #15. And, here you are. So?
Egggszacktly!
Which is why it’s going to be a big shock to most Americans should Ensign or Coburn be fitted for orange jumpsuits — because unless they live in Nevada or Oklahoma, or read online media, they won’t have heard about this.
Oh, and when I went into Google News just now, typing “coburn ensign” got one (1) result, the Politico story. Typing “rangel” got 5,280.
Ensigns old news !
MSM is only interested in the sensational and the celebrities ,old boring stuff like Ensign doesn’t boost ratings or sell papers. Now a black democratic congressman and ethics violations, that’s a story!/s
You all need to remember the #1 media rule – IOKIYAR.
Fox, et al, has had many years to perfect their art. Just keep repeating the lies, over and over and over and soon, enough of the public will have heard them, and accepted them as the truth. If you hear something on TV, and then hear it repeated by a co-worker ,or friend etc, you’ll believe it ,it’s human nature. The people at Fox and similar news outlets, figured this out years ago and use it to their advantage.
How do we counter this ? By constantly hammering away at them with the facts , the public is saddly misinformed and the only thing we can do, is work to educate people and show them the truth.
It it were not for the internet and the blogs I read, I would probably believe the same shit, everyone else does.
A black, Democratic, and fairly liberal congressman, to boot.
And yes, as AZ Matt just said, It’s OK — (but only) If You’re A Republican.
Also, lower functioning people are moved more by their emotions than their intellect. Think marketing strategy. So, maybe that’s why some people have no problem listening to the Becks, Limbaughs and Hannity’s. Maybe?
Does nobody remember the famous words etched in over the erased “fairness doctrine”?
Of, by and for the fabuously wealthy. The media is oficially bought and paid for. NPR celebrities are on FOX Mews. Liberal now means anything to the left of Richard M. Nixon (who is suspected of being a secret Liberal).
Only the willing, missed the memo. Spread the word.
By the way, if Blanche Lincoln is a “Moderate Democrat”, then who exactly would be a Conservative Democrat? Maybe a Moderate politician, a Corporate politician, but still….
Maybe the left could do a better job of engaging emotionally? Facts should be as easy to communicate emotionally as lies.
When the Left gets emotional, they are slammed. Remember Howard Dean’s demise? When Rachel gets emotional, she’s slammed. It’s a double standard, for sure.
Good morning, demi;
Rev Bev’s comment certainly goes to the heart (if that is the proper term) of what should be a major social psychology concern, as it confronts the issue of how or why many people are willing to suspend their own judgment (and diminish their own humanity in the process) of accepting the assertions of those who are clearly unbalanced and cunning practitioners of deceit and manipulation.
Those who feel marginalized and powerless, at the mercy and whim of powers and coercions beyond their certain understanding and, often, control, if they are so circumscribed in their sense of themselves as to have no clear idea of WHO they actually are, having never been encouraged to find out, respond quickly to firm, certain, and usually LOUD individuals who DO seem in control, who DO seem powerful, and most import, who DO seem concerned about the plight of those who are easily frightened but also, resentful at what they perceive as institutional or societal “unfairness”.
Access to real educational opportunities and freedom from instructions in hate, from family or “community”, might well result in a far healthier and humane society. Perhaps, someday, we may ALL conclude that real equality and real justice as national goals, rather than warfare and destructive economic games, might, indeed make this a better place and allow ALL of us a better existence.
Those who are easily misled have also been easily mistreated.
That is our history?
If we only “look forward”, then we shall be missing something very important.
We did not arrive where we are by accident or an excess of goodwill and humanity.
Either we are all on this planet together or, soon, none of us will have lives much worth the living, and we will all be most miserable.
How do we not notice that those least suited to power and wealth are those most likely to obtain and attain them?
How is it that the most obvious things are little seen and even more rarely, spoken of?
America is loath to examine itself, its behaviors and what it has done and is doing.
Until that changes, “things” will get worse, damned unpleasant in fact, and the demagogues will have a field day, and those possessed of reason, compassion, and human decency …. well, you understand.
The unfolding and ongoing revolution is about understanding … and what one will NOT go along with.
Mindless fear would be a good place to begin, in terms of what one will not go along with, but that requires courage which can only be learned, through experience and understanding …
Time, which is the only thing human beings ever REALLY get to “spend”, will tell.
This is our time, let us make the most of it. (Too many are making the least of it).
DW
PS, and when Hillary got a tear in her eye during a coffee clatch on the campaign trail, omg!
That’s a good comment…so, my question above> What is so appealing about a loud rant? Laura Ingraham loves a ranting, insulting, indignation, usually mean. What is the success?
The left gets slammed for not being empathic or emotional enough. You don’t have to scream or cry to engage emotionally. It’s really what Lakhoff’s “framing” is about. Limbaugh’s secret is he is entertaining. and, vile as it is, his humor is engaging, especially for the resentful.
Very well said. And, thank you. Have you ever considered writing a diary for The Seminal? Because I think this would make an excellent one.
The unexamined life keeps Fox on the air. (With apologies to Socrates.)
Wow, what do I owe you? Thanks and what a helpful response. The conundrum of who pursues and gets power; what engenders fear; how we spend our time maybe the direction to hope. Very hard to tell. I keep waiting for the time/episode when “enough’s enough.”
Thanks for taking the time to reflect on all of this. Bev
“Then Coburn made the unusual claim that his conversations with Ensign were “privileged” because he is a physician and ordained deacon.”
The usual R hypocricy.
Why does the traditional media…..
Simple answer to a simple question:
Ownership. They play golf together. Go to Rupert’s parties. Owners hire managing editors. Managing editors hire and set expectations for reporters and columnists….
There was a time that owners didn’t care as long as the papers sold advertising and enough copies to have high rates. As long as the broadcast and cable shows drew eyes and ears and sold advertising at good rates.
But before that there was a time much like now when owners drove political agendas.
It is interesting to note that the existence of the “fairness doctrine” coincided with a period of relative responsibility on the part of the fourth estate …
Perhaps there might be some small aspect of that history which could suggest a means of “improving” the current “situation”?
How are you doing this steamy, sweltering day, TD?
DW
All my Republican friends can talk about is Rangel, and they keep having to mention that he’s black. All this tsk tsk tsking going on, but yeah, when it comes to Ensign: crickets (even when Ensign was more in the news).
It’s all very slanted by the corporate media, and a certain portion of the population enjoys it very much, esp the schadenfreude aspect of it. If a Dem is “found out”: yippeeee, we KNEW it!!!! But if a Repub is found out: crickets. No introspection, and the accountability only applies to the “other side.”
Or they mock & deride KO’s “Special Comments” (or whatever he calls them), and KO often gets fairly emotional during that. I may not always agree with KO, but still… I think he’s pretty sincere.
I saw a clip last night of Glenn Beck (about 1 min long, and there’s a min of my life I’ll never re-capture). I mean: the guy is seriously whacked but very emotional. Many conservatives *adore* Glenn and his totally weird over the top emotional rantings, but then they’ll point and mock KO for getting emotional (but not so weirdly) during his comments.
What is sauce for the goose, is not sauce for the gander… or IOKIYAR.
Anthony Weiner was on RM last night speaking somewhat to this issue about the rightwing media & in particular the Breitbart/Sherrod dumbness.
Weiner said words to the effect that Dems & BHO have chosen to take the “high road” and be noncommital and non-confrontational about the b.s. and lies that eminate daily in the media, esp Fake. Weiner contended that this was not a good idea. Weiner stated that voters/contituents want to see their elected representatives “stand up” for them (a point I’d been ranting about here for the past few days), and in Weiner’s opinion, he felt that Dems/BHO should engage more in exposing and/or discussing the lies and b.s. in the rightwing media, esp in terms of dealing better with situations like the Breitbart follies.
I agree with Weiner. I think it’s a big failure for Dems to just *ignore* Fake (yeah, I know: it’s a feature, not a glitch) and continue on the “high road.” I’ve had to deal with bullies on my job. While one doesn’t lower oneself to becoming a bully, too, simply ignoring a bully does NOT work at all. Believe me. One has to ENGAGE with bullies, call them out constantly, and point out where they’re lying with proof. Which is pretty *easy* to do with Fake, etc.
Won’t hold my breath waiting for BHO to do that, though.
Random thoughts.
A powerful right wing meme is resentment at the patronizing better than though attitude they perceive coming from the left. They stipulate to their being “sinful” and can excuse themselves if they can prove that everyone is the same. i.e.”all people are racists.” We will never win taking the bait and responding to that.
IMO the compelling lesson the women Shirley Sherrod exemplifies is of the transformation that comes when one becomes determined to serve an other and others. I think it is a positive message that the left can emphasize and most important practice.
IMO another positive message that the left can be successful with is per Woody Guthrie “This Land is Your Land.” Virtually all of us have fallen for this “private property” scam which is really nothing more than saying you can have an acre for yourself but you don’t own the rest. If we know we also share ownership of the planet then man does what man does for his property; he takes care of it..
I also agree with elucidation and confrontation of lies and bad behavior while offering alternatives.
The idiocy — as well as the irony — being that Tom Coburn is a board-certified ob/gyn. So what kind of privileged doctor/patient conversation was this with John Ensign, Dr Coburn?
You’d think that would have Legacy Media in a tizzy. And if the Senators at the center of it were Democrats, we would see same.
I agree with Demi that you should do a diary. I know a woman who sneaks Fox News on at 2am when visiting her daughter who doesn’t allow the “news” on in the house. Then she rants the next day. Many people feel powerless and disillusioned. The American Dream didn’t or isn’t happening for them. They are angry. Very angry. They can’t afford cognitive behavior therapy. But they can turn on Fox or listen to Rush or Sean and feel vindicated in their anger. It’s the “other” that has caused their lack of advancement. It’s the “blacks, or Hispanics, or Muslims” that have made them feel this way. Those others have ruined their chances for the good life. They stew in their own juices and are in a feed loop they can’t get out of.
What to do? I just try and talk to my conservative neighbors by agreeing with them on something and then asking questions. Never try to do the typical liberal thing of badgering them with facts. They just think we are pointy headed condescending A holes. Yes, there is a small group of people who like to run the world. But a well placed factoid works wonders. I try to use the (Republican) David Cay Johnston’s books, “Free Lunch” and “Perfectly Legal”. My favorite is asking them “When a person puts an alarm system in their house and it goes off and the police come, who pays for the police?” “It’s one of the biggest scams and subsidies around. The alarm company sells a fairly cheap piece of equipment to make to you for a handsome price. The real cost is the police who must respond to a mostly non- crime because usually it’s the dog that sets off the alarm. Meanwhile a real crime is occurring someplace else.” How many more businesses are getting away with this?”
Re: Ensign’s mistress would be my guess or not.
It is best to regard the corporate media as enemy propaganda.
He claimed it was spiritual counseling and privilege on the basis he is a Deacon, not on the patient doctor thing.
I agree about talking to conservatives in ways that seek to find common ground and then ask questions. Strive not to appear as if I’m “talking down” to someone or feeling smug or whatever. I agree that doesn’t work and peppering folks with facts, often doesn’t work, even if they are, uh, factual. Telling stories can be one way of finding common ground.
But I do feel that the Democratic party would serve its constituents better by engaging more in debunking the lies and myths promulgated esp by Fake and other rightwing media. Ignoring them is almost worse than useless; I think it’s counterproductive bc it’s almost as good as endorsing the lies and the smears.
What is it about?
Empty tin cans rattle the loudest…takes a lot of “rattle” to fill the equally empty heads of the Fixed News viewing audience.
Rattlers spewing venom.
Thanks for that. Good ideas, and someone doing a post about this topic could be useful. I want to read those 2 books. I think telling stories is one of the better means of communicating with people and possibly helping them to see through the fog of lies that have perpetuated onto them (as means of making them blame, for ex, “the poor” for all their alienation and financial issues, rather than seeing how it’s the corporations and the billionaires who are robbing us). Good suggestions.
There’s a class war going on and rich are winning with the help of a corrupt, cowardly and complicit corporate media. It’s past time for these bobbleheads, news readers and self identified “pundits” to become causalities in a war that to this point is suffered only by the working and middle class exclusively.
Why isn’t this being widely disseminated?
Some Pentagon employees found with child porn still working …Jul 23, 2010 … Given the pornographic nature of just about everything the DoD does, that the warmongering freaks are dabbling in kiddie porn is not …
rawstory.com/rs/2010/0723/pentagon-employees-porn-working/
Actually it was reported on CBS last night….I know there could be more.
Thank you for that info. I cannot “get” the local CBS affiliate on my system.
BTW, on another note, the WaPo trilogy(re: proliferation of intel profiteers) that was the focus of much blosphere activity went unreported by Brian Williams and NBC nightly news, earlier this week.
Your approach to the “conservative” mindset, is stellar and consistent with the realty that we are all in “this” together, and that there is much that “we” already agree about. Reaching the humanity of others through that common experience of life, love, children and hopes for a better nation (such as the rebuilding of the infrastructure) are resonate possibilities for exchange and, ultimately, the basis of trust.
Trust and common experience are the foundation for a more rational and reasonable future. For example, every person whom I know who style themselves as conservative opposes the endless wars, in fact I have never seen such widespread anti-war feeling as exists today, far more than was the case, ever, during Vietnam, and this must be built upon.
It would be helpful if progressives would develop compelling and human-sized narratives of the world we should like to experience, as many conservatives would find that world more than agreeable.
The problem we face as a nation is that we are not at all clear about our purposes which is why greed and violence are not merely on the rise but generally countenanced as both “acceptable” and inevitable.
As a people, Americans are demoralized and bereft of national purpose, not unlike the people of Germany were at the end of WWI. It is too likely we will continue to follow their example of excess and smoldering discontent, coupled to an increasingly warlike response to everything.
It is my concern that the elites will not stop and that the entire nation will be regarded as rogue and beyond reason, given to violence and intent upon dominating the world.
Then we will be even more like Germany once was … and I predict that our fate will, likewise, be terribly familiar.
Mostly, what we can do is work on the home “front”, continuing to do what we have been doing, for the country is changing in understanding, one mind and one heart at a time.
But we must also be prepared to put ourselves “on line” in confronting the breakdown of the rule of law and the social contract, on the national level politically and economically.
(I happen to know, montanamaven, that you are a true example, a real leader, in all of these things, for which I thank you and appreciate you more than words may convey.)
DW
Why is the anti-war voice not more mobilized? We’ve been engaged/over-extended at war for years now. Why not more noise, do you think?
I don’t know to whom you are adressing this question, or if it is rhetorical, but I’lll have a go,if I may.
I have pondered the VERY question many times, myself.
And I have a theory…and it may sound blasphemous.
I think the folks who would have been out in the streets marching are now blogging.Me included.
The internet is a giant blow out preventer .Allows people to vent when they are steamed.
Just an opinion, but if teh tubes were no longer available to let off steam, my belief is that we would see more much of a physical presence in the poltical and social marketplace.
Ergo, that is a pretty good argument for the powers that be to leave teh tubes alone.
We’ve been exhausted by the shock doctrine and the voices of vox populi are not merely ignored but disparaged by those in power and the media confirms.
People feel NOTHING of substance and hope has been, deliberately, manipulated and then trashed as “irrational” and “counterproductive” by ALL the wisdoms of deceit and destruction.
Before there can be noise, there first must be … courage AND the perceived possibility of real, actual change …
Barack Obama has, for reasons of proclaimed “pragmatic” political “expediency”, deliberately and maliciously (for his own elevation into the legacy class, in my opinion) chosen to trash the mandate which was handed him, and the cost of his actions and in-actions as well as those of Congress and SCOTUS are intended to quash possibility, reason, and genuine empathy.
Oddly enough, these behaviors of the elite reflect fear and loathing, and the recognition that, despite their propensity to unrestrained violence and war, they are losing their grip …
DW
Yes.
What else, Gitchee, do you imagine that sitting on our assets (as it were) also prevents?
Do we rise often and go out into the world and talk with others, face to face, and heart to heart …?
Or do we not?
DW
Dee Dub,
I still recall with sincerest awe , the sheer numbers of citizens ,folk of all color and creed ,turning out en masse to see Barack Obama when he was campaigning. I know that people can and will rise from their assets when they are motivated by hope.
Fear doesn’t inspire the same reaction.
This much I know to be true . We cannot substitute a wishbone for a backbone. And power does not relinquish itself gracefully. It must be wrested and demanded .
Democracy is not a spectator sport.
Indeed, but also there have been so many protests over the past decade which are totally ignored/suppressed by the corporate media. Even those large world-wide protests against the wars during the Bush Admin years were hardly reported on, were mocked and derided if mentioned at all as being “very small,” and yet there were millions world-wide who marched.
How to combat that?
There was a reasonably large protest against the wars in March on the anniversary of the beginning of the Iraq War in both San Francisco and Sacramento, yet I found absolutely NO reporting on them, except – ironically – on a local SF rightwing blog (that even had photos).
There have been other anti-war protests over the past year that get next to no coverage, esp in comparison to the extensive and hyperventilating coverage of the various corporate-sponsored astro-turfed Tea Party rallies.
I think the left has gotten the message that it doesn’t matter what we do, we won’t get the “optics.” So one has to wonder how effective it is to march anymore, yet I’m willing to do it (and have done so in the recent past).
Truly and beautifully said.
And true as true can be, Gitcheegumee.
DW
OIG,
I certainly “hear ya”, regarding the MSM and its self preservation instincts. The FCC has been as ineffective as the MMS was re” off shore drilling.s/
I was under the impression that the airwaves belonged to the citizenry. Our interests have been under and mis represented for some time now -especially with the mergers of the Goliath news orgs and communication groups.Where’s the outrage?
The Netroots Nation conventions are visible proof of the vibrant need for information by the populace. Info that is not synthesized and homogenized to suit a corporate bottom line.
Perhaps it is quixotic of me,but the fact that much good work is not covered by MSM, is good reason to continue doing MORE of it-not less.
Hey, if Farrakhan could motivate a million man march…..
Change begins within us…
((Blush))T.Y.
I agree with all that you say, including to keep on protesting and/or doing other actions to do our best to call attention to the issues that we see as important, such as protesting the wars.
Informally I have been raising the extreme cost of these senseless wars with conservatives that I know – attempting to do so in as non-confrontational a manner as I can. After all, most of them rail about “bigger govt” being the “problem,” so, OK: Where does the vast majority of our tax dollars go?
Some conservatives have outright ignored or dissed me for bringing up the MIC and the cost of wars, but some have actually given it a tiny bit of thought – esp since I bring it up in terms of the COST. In other words, if I had talked about the very leftie concepts of “peace” or “not killing people,” well, gawd forbid, that would’ve been pussy leftie stupid.
But if I talk about COST, I have found that it does get *some* conservatives thinking and questioning the wars… fwiw. An approach to take and perhaps something that could be stated on signs at possible future anti-war protests???
If you want to see people “engaged” over the war thing, re-institute the draft. That’ll get somebody’s attention.
One other commenter here mentioned this, and also pointed out that if the draft had been in place during Bush’s first term, he never would have been elected for a second.
It’s one of the major reasons why the war in Vietnam came to an end (for us).
The military right now is over-extended with the resources they do have. There is another “secret” military (read mercenary contractors) that is taking up the slack and costing 3-5 times as much
Yes, when dealing with those of a corporate mind set(i.e. the bottom line is all that matters)the only sense they exhibit is $$ and cents. And you are wise to approach in that manner.
It is the only language that computes.
Forget the nontangibles such as humanity and compassion-the only almighty they are interested in is the almighty dollar. And it is going to get worse with the recent SCOTUS corporate personhood ruling.
Now, I am going to say that I agree with Charlie Rangel. If the draft were reinstituted, you can believe there would be some demonstrations going on.And less lust for war, imho.Until some of these conservative folks you refer to have some skin in the game, it remains just dollars and cents..
Maybe ,just for the heck of it, pop ‘em with that draft issue and let us know their reaction. Can you imagine their reaction when YOU, the antiwar person, would appear to support a draft?
WTF?
Darn, I must be a Karnak ,also. I just posted the same thing!
lol – great minds etc…
In closing, just another thought, but you may want to read the interview over at EmptyWheel that Marcy did with Tim Shorrock, earlier this week. I think it was Wednesday.
FDL Talks Intelligence Contracting with Tim Shorrock

His book is entitled Spies for Hire and entails the proliferation of private intel contractors since 2001. Its a great thread, with much info that may be useful to you in your future discussions.
one other thing I would like to mention is that during the Vietnam war there were independent and network photojournalists there and their content was on the nightly news constantly.
I see none of that now, or very little of it, and what we do see is heavily edited. The information on what’s going on in Iraq and Afghanistan is suppressed in the American media.
And let’s not forget Anderson Cooper talking with a straight face (no pun intended) to Erick Erickson about how the mean ol’ baddies on the left are forcing the right to go on the offense….
Has Anderson Cooper even once looked at Erick Erickson’s blog? Do the words “Glenn Beck was at CNN before Fox” mean nothing to him?
The sieved credulity of those who posture most loudly about how nonpartisan they are is mind boggling.
I learn more news about what is going on inside the US from non US media-UK sites such as the Guardian,or the German der Spiegel, or agence france- presse.
Go figger.
BTW, if ANYONE has not seen the movie Network, from the 70′s, get thee a copy or download ASAP!
Um, no:
There is no draft.
My bad
Corporations could not exist without lies. Lies are the lifeblood of corporations. Listen to any corporation ad on TV: it is a lie to some degree. The point of corporations is to steal from the many and give to the few. Corporations are evil.
Thanks. Will check it out.
Agree w/you & Rangel, and have for while now, that the draft should be re-instituted but that’ll never happen now. Our Republican overlords (which includes most/all Dems) know what a draft would mean: the peons would finaly wake up & smell the coffee which is being brewed for them. Can’t have an awake population, now can we??? Nope, not holding my breath for a draft; ain’t gonna happen.
You already know the answer.
The Media is “of, by and for the wealthy.”
If you want to change this, then you band with me and we (it will take millions of us) band together and purchase CBS. It is the only way we will ever see a television station present the real news. Does anyone think it is a coincidence that all the news outlets repeat the exact same stories with the exact same slant with the exact same meme?
Only 1% of the population is represented in the “of, by and for” of the media. And it certainly isn’t any of the bottom 99% of the wealth in America.
