However (yeah, here I go again): for sure the rightwing’s not going to stand up for the Shirley Sherrod’s of this planet simply because it was the “right thing to do.” So… if the so-called “left” is also not going to stand up for her, then who? Surely Sherrod is a constituent of the Democrats. If Sherrod had done something “wrong” or whatever, then fine: fire her, if deserved. But the fact is, the “Democrats” didn’t think twice; didn’t check it out; and just jumped the gun based on a rightwing assualt with no facts to back up their actions.

We’re kinda arguing semanitcs, in my humble opinion. Just like Shirley Sherrod’s father was literally, murderously shot in the back and killed forty-five years ago by a Klansman living on a farm next door, Shirley Sherrod earlier this week was figuratively stabbed in the back by Andrew Breithart, after which Fox News picked up the bloodied Breitbart knife and continued to stab Shirley Sherrod repeatedly in the back, continuing the Breitbart-instigated character assassination of Shirley Sherrod.

And then some gullible fools in the Agriculture Department and the NAACP, apparently believing this character-assassination segment of a much longer highly-inspirational and non-racist speech, picked up this same right-wing-manufactured bloody knife and plunged it into Shirley Sherrod’s back themselves, and only after getting all the facts, apologized and tried to remove the Breitbart/Fox News knife that they’d prematurely and blindly plunged into Shirley Sherrod’s back.

This is how I see what happened this week.

And Shirley Sherrod even said she was shocked when informed that a video clip had been released by the knife-wielding rabid right-wing, one accusing her of being a racist, one that showed only a short segment of a much longer speech she’d given months ago, kind of like she’d been snuck up on from behind and ambushed, just like the Agriculture Department was ambushed, just like the Obama administration was ambushed, just like the NAACP was ambushed, just like Shirley Sherrod’s dad was ambushed.

That would make a great diary.

The way to stand up for Shirley Sherrod is quite simple, tell her story as clearly as you can. It doesn’t need any extra special push.

Second, if she decides to bring a suit against Breitbart, support her in that decision. Make clear there is lots of support so that well experienced lawyers with this sort of litigation contribute to the case.

What is the value of a nice civil suit for defamation in addition to a verdict with a nice fine? — well, in civil litigation one can do pre-trial discovery, and ask interesting questions under oath. For instance, there could be a nice forensic audit of Breitbart’s finances, who pays him to do his work? How Much? Does he get a bonus when he collects a scalp? Let’s see all his E-Mail correspondance with political and media related persons. Might be interesting, No? In Discovery one can call for depositions persons related to the cause of action — so you take depositions from Fox News people, and if political consultants were in on the game to get the NAACP by destroying Shirley Sherrod, well you take the testimony under oath of the consultants. You can follow the money.

Shirley Sherrod is a very strong woman with the kind of background one sees on the chests of Generals in the Military who have battle ribbons trailing down to the floor. He father was lynched during the effort to achieve the Voting Rights Bill — and crosses were burned at her home, and no protection of any kind was afforded, no indictments were ever brought in the murder of her father. She is married to one of the founders of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee — not as well known as John Lewis, but in the same founding group. Her Husband is a well known Baptist Pastor in Georgia, with a docterate from Union Theological.

So if she decides to sue, (and it is her decision) then March with her as we did when King said to put on the walking shoes. This isn’t about Obama or about Vilsack — it is about the kind of people who see other persons as tools to use and destroy so as to eliminate the object of their hate — in this case, NAACP. The Breitbart’s of the world, and those who support them and feed off them simply do not respect some of their fellow Americans, and the progress made over the years toward respect for the equity of others. So it is a teaching moment with consequences.
