Cheneyvader (graphic: twolf1)
It’s been a couple of days now since we first learned of the surgical implantation of a ventricular assist device to keep former Vice President Dick Cheney alive. Given that his horrendous policies won’t die, it seems only natural that he should join the undead along with them.
How appropriate is it that the same week we learn about Cheney’s pump that keeps him alive without a pulse we also learn of the insatiably growing and definitely never to die network of private contractors playing huge roles in our nation’s intelligence gathering?
Even though logic tells us that Cheney eventually really will die, the legacy he will leave behind is being assured immortality because Barack Obama is giving it the stamp of being bipartisan. For as far as we can see into our country’s future, contractors will be used to circumvent Congressional oversight on key intelligence functions. There also is a bipartisan stamp on enhanced interrogation torture, keeping Guantanamo open indefinitely and government oversight of industry that is completely meaningless.
Cheney’s legacy of bowing down to big oil is now resulting in a huge swath of death in the Gulf of Mexico. Obama’s weak response to BP’s gaming of the system promises us that deference to big oil now will be a bipartisan undying policy as well.
What will it take for our country to rid itself of the undead policies this beast will leave behind?

About Firedoglake
Vader to Obama: I am your (policies’) father!
Cheney hasn’t had a heart for decades. His body is just now figuring it out. The world would be a much better place today if it had done so years ago.
jim! too bad the undead can’t take their policies with them when they finally do go to their just rewards…
(((twolf!!)) Most Excellent.
Just reward him, already!
Make it so, number one!
Hey Boys & Girz!
I was just subjected to an NRA one question poll about an international conference on firearms control that is happening at the UN. They first played a message about how countries like North Korea, Iran, Venezuala and others will have a say in this and we will be become a disarmed country like Britain. And that there is a statue of a revolver in front of UN HQ that has its barrel twisted in a knot. That Clinton is participating in this and it is all Obama’s plan to take away your guns. Then a guy came on at the end and asked if I supported the NRA standing up to protect American rights because Obama wasn’t. I told the guy that I can not accept the premise if the message and it was impossible to say yes or no. He told me that I didn’t love the Constitution. I told him I rejected his statement. He then hung up. So now you know what the next big NRA campaign will be about.
Oh, is that what that was about. We got a call last week and I cut him off and asked him to kindly remove our name from the list.
Boy! Talk about push polling! I recently stopped having anything to do with Polling Point for the same kind of practice of polling for a desired result, rather than to get a feel for what people really think.
Hi gang. You might be able to tell I have a low opinion of our former Vice President.
Thanks! I love to hear those things. I used to hear those things on local right wing radio where they would try out new campaigns. Some would catch on others wouldn’t.
no sane person has a high one dood
Of course, since Cheney never did anything good, it may be a little lonely in that casket…
Very well played, sir.
Well, next week I’m going to begin to safeguard some of my possessions by moving them into storage. Even if this extension funding does help me out, (and I believe it will), it will only be till November and I don’t have any confidence at all that anything will have changed by then. I have a very good friend with a large metal building and she has agreed to let me store my stuff there indefinitely. At least I don’t have to abandon it.
Well, there is that.
Hiya!
Nice piece and nice graphic. I remember hearing about Cheney’s ‘leave behinds” in governments in a story I heard on Fresh Air where Terry Gross was interviewing Seymour Hersch. It was very interesting because it showed that their loyalty was not to the constitution but to a man and HIS interpertation of the constitution. I remember listening to Jane Mayer being interviewed about “The Darkside” her book about Cheney. She almost made me feel sorry for Cheney, how he drove himself insane listening to raw intelligence. Then I remembered that the CHOSE to do that.
Options are power. You go, girl.
Painful. But I know you won’t give in.
Too bad there wasn’t an DeBushafication or DeCheneyfing of the government when they left.
Which generation of leave-behinds are you referring to? He and Rummy started seeding DoD in the Nixon days.
I hope that some better times are coming your way sooner rather than later.
That’s hands down my biggest disappointment with this administration. A huge part of the reason that we are still dealing with Bush/Cheney policies is that there are still too many Bush/Cheney cronies and appointees in government.
Cheney will go down in human history as one of America’s most damaging Presidents ever.
Here’s a pic of the gun at the U.N. It’s one of the most effective & emotional antiviolence pieces of art I have ever seen.
Thanks everybody. I won’t deny that I’m terrified. I’m too old to be going through this but too young to have much of a safety net and now it looks like what little savings I have is going to go the way of the Do Do.
Dang! That gun would have had a REALLY long barrel, unknotted.
I’m not sure he’ll go down in history as a human though…
I’m not sure he’s human.
This post has good production values.
Looks like I owe you a drink.
Where did you get that link? It has so much good crap:
Is this serious or parody? I honestly can’t tell.
Back in the day when my son was pre-wingnut, we were visiting distant relatives in Poland. Because of the language diffs, my son & I talked a lot to each other. It was June 2001. We decided we were too civilized for anything other for enemies than putting them on an ‘oh die already’ list. Cheney was our #2, a close 2d to Bush. (Little did we know.) Several on the list have died; one is still in a coma to my knowledge. Cheney’s current state is almost better than our desired outcome. Who coulda anticipated?
I was wondering where he was actually hiding out throughout his terms in office. Anybody got a clue?
Cheney 2012!
Cheney 3012!
I guess it’s serious. I just googled this: twisted gun at un photo
i figure that mansized safe in his office was used like a vampire would use a coffin to avoid sunlight…
And the shelves went thru him like the magicians saw.
His legacy is being a war criminal and corporate whore. He is pure evil.
The NRA obviously thinks that it is offensive. With this poll you either ended up being a lover of the Constitution or a hater of it.
Could hang by his feet in there I suppose, help to keep the blood flowing to the brain.
Cheney needs to visit this place!
He had a direct elevator to Hell.
Oh well. I find the NRA’s “guns are all that matters” model of reality to be pretty offensive, so I guess we’re even.
Hi Jim. Evening, pups. As I said the other day, the only silver lining is that with each trip to the hospital, Cheney gets closer and closer to the end. He’ll be with his own kind soon.
Maybe that human flesh-eating daughter of his will assist him on his way before the estate tax takes effect again beginning next year.
I was just looking at the picture on that website then looked at what else was there and is a flat earth website. Since a rotating earth isn’t in the Bible they say NASA and the UN are liars.
Guess the U.S. constitution has been reduced to only one amendment.
There have been posts recently about how NRA membership does not agree with NRA-PTB. Who coulda anticipated? I have plenty of gun-lover friends in the country, most of whom are on my wavelength on most other subjects. There’s a particularly strong link between many gun owners who are hunters, and environmentalists. The hunters I know are very environmentally aware and knowledgeable.
My dad belonged to the NRA back in the 60′s and I remember the American Rifleman magazine. It was about hunting for the most part. He didn’t maintain his membership after the 60′s so wasn’t involved with its radicalization.
Maybe that’s what’s inside his safe.
I’m sure none of them have ever boarded an airplane, right?
Was down to my last few dollars, literally, about 15 months ago. Then a bit of work showed up. Sometimes a change comes way late, but just in time. I keep telling myself that I am just maintaining a state of readiness for whatever is coming next. I know it isn’t easy.
I didn’t realize that it was a nutzoid site when I linked to it. It had the photo I was looking for so voila. Now I’m thinking, why was it #1 or #2 in the list, given what I googled. Who paid whom for what to get it that far up on the google list? First time I’ve confronted that issue personally, but too late tonight for me to delve into it.
I grew up shooting and doing a little hunting as did my brothers. I haven’t done any in many years. I do have a .22 bolt action rifle my dad gave me when I turned 14 and before he died he gave a little Remington rolling block, breach-loading .22 that was his first gun.
Wasn’t there a fire in the executive office a few years ago RIGHT next to Cheney’s office??? Seems some of his records went up in smoke… Hmmm
No worries. We like nutzoid sites.
At least it looks like Shirley Sherrod is not going to just go away quietly. I say good for her for fighting back with the truth. When will the media ever learn what a liar Breitbart is?
Well, when you challange one part of a person’s belief system it might cause them to question the rest of it and they don’t want to learn facts.
I’ve gone to a gun range once (relative’s so it was free) and my best hunter friend has given me one lesson with a .22 rifle. Interesting to know how the other half lives, but not my thing. I do have 2 antique rifles in the gun rack in my historic house.
When will O learn who Breitbart is? Oh, I forgot. B is probably an undercoverage agent for O.
Is this nutty enough for you:
I wonder what they think of all those Roman Catholics on the Supreme Court.
Sorry, pups, but I have to get to bed. Got a heavy day ahead that starts early.
g’nite jim
Or the soon to be new Islamofascist Jewish orthodox sharia luvin member of SCOTUS. This religious thingy is getting so complicated it makes my head hurt.
I guess they aren’t Kennedy fans, either.
Nite Jim.
Color me gone too.
After I got back from Peace Corps in Costa Rica many years ago, my brothers brought a thrower for clay pigeons and set it up on a bluff over looking the creek and proceeded to show me what great skeet shooters they were. They didn’t hit many of the clays. When it was my turn I hit about 9 out of 10 and they didn’t say much.
Lord. Who wrote that? Sounds like something that could have been written when JFK was president.
Good Night!
g’nite ecahn
Thanks so much Jim.
The link is back up at 25 in eCAHN’s comment.
It’s funny to me that conservatives automatically assume that liberals aren’t a good shot, can’t fish, etc.
I can drive a tractor and a bushhogg too, and you could NEVER tell by looking at me!
Good lord, twolf’s graphic is way too real.
Brrrr.
You just know Liz is sweeping around the hospital bed with intent to snag the pump cord. “Oh, Daddy had to be plugged in ALL night? I did not know that. Is my untaxed inheritance ready now?”
Bushhogg this, you beast!
Jeebers. That is pretty scary, weird, crazy, over the top, couple of screws loose, not playing with a full deck, not running on full thrusters kind of web site.
Quiet! I’m busy cow-tipping.
Wow. I just went to the site’s main page. CRAZY! I did learn the password to get into heaven though.
It’s BLOOD!
I spent a summer maintaining tomato harvester hydralics in the field. I drove a crawler hauling trailers of tomatoes in and out the fields.
And I lived 35 miles down the end a dirt road in Kenya, no runnig water or electricity, all clothes washed by hand, for 2 years. There was only one other white guy, an Irish Catholic priest, in a settlement of 12,000 people. I loved it.
Only in rethug heaven would the password be blood.
Beck’s kind of folk!
And if you didn’t find these guys a little disturbing before, the password is at least going to make you wonder…
your forking cows just tipped over into my snipe hunting trap … watch where ya tip those bovines dood
I just looked at the one page. You are brave.
Hey, both of you cool it, I am trying to watch the submarine race…
You go Kelly!
I drove a 1985 Ford pickup truck with a manual transmission and no power steering. I could parallel park that baby in six inches of snow! Really!
DAMN! I hate when that happens.
I was just getting them outta the way of my crop-circling! [it spells "Spocko" in ancient Vulcan]
Oh this is too hilarious!
HEY! I’m smoke-shifting over here. Try to give me some space, please.
*waves at CE*
I cut and threaded pipe, hydrotested and filled fire extinguishers, drove a forklift, and fought fires. And that was in the summer. In the winter I drove a snow plow, and hunted pheasant. In spring I caught and cleaned fish.
I’m L
I’m going to ask you to go to the next campsite and get me 100 feet of shoreline and a left handed monkey wrench.
I slaved in the scullery, cleaned fire grates and chopped wood. You win, dude! Heh!
And then you beat that *itch on talk radio till she couldn’t take it any more and San Fran radio had less static!
Kelly!
Don’t forget the metric crescent wrench either.
I need to get me one of those…
Still here?
Tee hee! You know she is good friends with Breitbart. They worked together on the “troop a thon”
Have I whined to you about my panel session about how to take on right wing radio and TV hosts getting rejected for Netroots Nation? The reason that Breitbart is still out there is that nobody is actively going after him like I did after the KSFO people. Of course, maybe it was because the title of the session was “Kicking the Right Wing Media in the Wallet.” I guess I was too agressive. I guess the plan is to wait until they attack us, since that seems to be the policy.
I had one of those and I think I lent it to Teddy, ask him.
yes I am
All he is is bluster and bullshit.
Just checking, as pups leave. This was really interesting.
I don’t think that’s whining Spocko. It wasn’t the title.
It’s about new media and you’re not too agressive – you’re just not in the veal pen.
This would be the first year I could afford to go, and I decided “Nope! Happy to firebag at home!”
i’m glad i’m maintaining my perfect record of non-attendance.
Hiya Suzanne,
Me too, just not for me, the fading flower.
had a long day ce?
He took down a dedicated public servant today.
I never thought I’d see the 90s replayed with another Democratic president.
Next up? The White House travel office.
This is lunacy. Someone needs to wake Barack Obama up.
I am glad I joined the ranks of the non-attendees this year.
no-drama obama has a flaming shitstorm on his hands and doesn’t realize it…
‘Bow before M.O.D.I.C.K., puny Earthlings’
;>)
Yes, and a long day tomorrow. I have a presentation at 6:30 p.m. for an hour about international fairs. It should be really fun, but there is always my stage fright.
hahahaha hey db
That hasn’t finished playing out. More shit taken out of context. That is way he works, just like ACORN. She should appeal it. NPR mentioned that the white farmer she referenced she did end helping, he kept his farm and they remain friends to this day.
Yep – they kicked a employee in the chops, without a factual basis. What do you think the rest of the employees feel like?
Vilsack should quit – bad judgment, especially on the doubling down.
as for Obama…more grrrr
Yes.
Ooo bon chance!
I always get stage fright on the speaking gigs too, but never with the music gigs. It’s so weird.
It is going away with practice though. You’ll do well CE.
Thanks. I upset me a lot. I really thought I had a solid shot. I blame myself first when things don’t work out.
I put so much time and energy and thought into the whole process (and it was so successful) that I wanted to share it with others and to get someone to say, “Hey, we’ll pay you to do that.” And since that didn’t happen I assume that it is because I didn’t package it right.
I was just reading about how much the group that created the Tea Party E xpress makes. They are raking in the money. They use it to pay Mark Williams. I guess saying racist stuff pays.
MARK WILLIAMS
02/11/2010
PAC Consulting Services – Tea Party Expr 5000.00
MARK WILLIAMS
03/03/2010
PAC Consulting Services – Tea Party Expr 1500.00
MARK WILLIAMS
05/10/2010
PAC Consulting Wages 4000.00
i know that feeling. but i have found that once i start talking, i find my groove and i start to have fun and i forget about being scared of public speaking.
I heard that NPR article too.
Did you catch the end part? Where it’s “chilling speech”? And that government workers of any stripe should be careful of what they say, no matter how long ago their viewpoint or story was in the past?
Beyond Orwell. I about vomited.
Don’t feel bad – A lot of these so-called ‘non-fringe’ elements still think they’re dealing with reasonable people.
;>)
Me too, and I know that. It is the days of prep that sort of freak me out! I have so much to show and talk about.
Not that you asked, but I coach people to do presentations. I had on VC that I trained who had some serious stage fright. We worked on two things since he didn’t want to take beta blockers.
1) Physical movement before going on stage. I had him do a brisk walk before he got on stage. The blood moving in an activity helped with some of the adrenaline rush.
2) We worked out the first 60 seconds over and over since it was the starting that was hard.
I also worked on giving him a real joke in the presentation a visual gag that worked well.
Finally, I was there with multiple AV back up solutions. I HATE when talks are cut down with AV glitches. I had duel laptops running the same presentations and two back up slide changers running them. I also gave him two quips to use if those back ups died.
It could. It is intersting that USDA jumps on her so fast but drags it butt when settling the discrimination lawsuits with Black farmers and Native American farmers.
Spocko, next time just name your panel “How to WIN.”
Firedoglake is not exactly the favorite of some orange folks these days and given that spocko comments here they might of thought he was tooooo radical. So spocko, go hangout over at the orange and then they will love you! ;)
Oh. My. Gosh! It’s all still their fault!!!
That was the other thing about getting rejected for the panel session that pissed me off. I’ve been a paid performer in front of big crowds and on TV. I’ve coached people for very intense high level presentations. People and companies whose names are household words. But I couldn’t tell them that. I thought that my internationally recognized work fighting right wing radio would be enough, that and my gathering of people who had used the techniques successfully on others. Oh well here I go again, whining. Sorry.
Didn’t read all the comments Mr. White, but your post was exceptional as always.
And the focus on Vampire Squid Cheney and his policies?
The details?
May he and his heart, and his policies and his influences pass on sooner than later.
Alas, Mr. White, the burden of we the people and the unwashed masses of the planet suffer from are far from the grapple of Cheney The Vampire Squid.
There are other grips from octupiii dead beings of the corporate fascists type that wrap their tentacles around our lives to joust with.
And they do, indeed, continue to choke us all to death.
Always love your writings and topics and thoughts.
Some of the spawn of the undead went to lying before Congress Tue. Nobody’ll ever guess what they said:
Former Bush administration officials: No one anticipated large oil spill
Something about that second paragraph has really got my goat this evening. Lemmesee now, maybe the Congress people could have thought it was an idle waste of time, to ask you any environmental questions. Or more seriously, or at least operationally, it could be that Kempthorne’s nomination went through in early 2006, when all the world was Bill Frist’s iirc, while Norton’s sailed through in the evenly divided Senate of early 2001, probably seeing floor action only after the inauguration when His Pall’s holding of the tiebreaking vote gave the Majority Leadership to Trent
LootLott (typos are amazing, aren’t they?).I suspect one could get a nice little late summer project out of following these two around, and I’m almost pissed off enough to do it.
Whenever he goes, Cheney will not be missed.
I had Mike Stark on the panel and he’s a KOS diary kind of guy. I later found out that his panel sessions were rejected too.
At the last Yearly KOS I spent a couple of hours helping to prep Gina for a possible media appearance since the Kos was busy. Nobody bothered to spend some time with her to explain what she needed to do. I gathered a couple of folks and did a mock interview with her and worked on some responses and messages. He ended up doing the interview, but I though that the lack of preparing their people for the media was a problem. Nobody was thinking about what kind of story the press were walking away with. It was the same attitude I saw with some engineers. They seem to think that the media don’t have an agenda and that they can just answer questions without thinking about how their competition will respond or how the media will translate it. I coached one PH.d in physics and he didn’t get that just answering the question wasn’t good enough, that he needed to understand why the question was being asked and how his answer was going to be used.
Ah, intramural warfare, the favored sport of the fighting liberal.
;>)
Don’t be afraid to put out there your professional expertise, it legitimzes you for many folks who might that the standing up the radio witch was a one time thing.
Lotsa panels didn’t get approved, dude. Our Prop 8 trial liveblogging panel was also rejected.
Some of those kids over there are very full of themselves.
I thought you guys did such great, great work on that! You and spocko are heros to many!
Not to get paranoid at the NN people, but three FDL authors’ panels are apparently scheduled opposite one another on Saturday.
Same as it ever was with humanity. Some fetch the water, others just carry it…and a well-sharpened agenda for the close quarter work hidden up the sleeve.
;>)
I am toddling off to bed, you guys have a great evening and wonderful tomorrow!
Gale Norton should be in prison.
me, too, night all….
She was pretty thick in the Abramoff business as I recall. Not to mention the Native American trust fund malfeasance that has swallowed up Interior Secs since … well, for a while.
But glancing over her (and Kempthorne’s too) vitae coming in to the appointment there is so much that is generally objectionable, relative to the tasks of SOI, that she ought to have been queried about that it is all but churlish now to retaliate with, well, you didn’t think to ask me either.
Then of course we come to Pall’s energy commission where, as Waxman pointed out, secrecy has disarmed public inquiry from then till now. Who knows what might have been asked if anybody knew what was discussed and decided.
Sadly, that applies to Kos himself. I met him at Book Expo America a few years ago, and in person he comes across as a pleasant, thoughtful sort, and of course, he’s accomplished a lot.
Then he put up a post after the 2008 election saying, “Fuck Ralph Nader and fuck anyone who voted for him.” I haven’t been back there much since.
In my case, I voted for Obama in the California primary because I was tired of the Clintons. But when the Big O flip-flopped on amnesty for the telcos for helping Cheney and Bush illegally wiretap the American people for seven years, I said, “This guy’s a phony” and voted for Nader.
Tough beans if you didn’t like that, Kos. We should be working together, but you need to grow up.
Thanks you just gave me the first good laugh of the day.
You are way too polite for these fuckheads. [Edited by Moderator: This site does not allow suggestions of violence to others, period.]
