Finally, some justice in New Orleans.
Four New Orleans police officers could face the death penalty after being accused of gunning down two unarmed people in the chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the latest twist for a corruption-plagued department that already faces several federal investigations.
The four officers were charged along with two others in a 27-count indictment unsealed Tuesday. [...]
“Put simply, we will not tolerate wrongdoing by those who are sworn to protect the public,” Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday in New Orleans.
Progress.

Good Morning BT, & Pups…
Cue Dave Weigel sputtering about another racial “stunt” in 5… 4… 3…
Some delay on the cap action…no explanation so far.
Good Morning, BT and thanks for putting this story up. Delayed justice is still justice. Good for Holder and crew.
I don’t want to think about people like Dave Weigel right now, thanks.
Delayed justice is still better than no justice. Delayed cap = not good. I wonder what testing they are waiting for. Are they afraid it’s going to get worse, or afraid of losing face and money?
How about some delayed justice on W admin torturers.
Good morning all.
Hey, eCAHN. I’m up for that.
Life deals cruel hands. As though the violence of the hurricane were not enough, a torrent of human violence compounded the tragedy.
Another small example of life’s cruelty. Pistol, a six year-old border collie, the gentlest creature on the planet, hid in a neighbor’s shed because he was frightened by the nearby fireworks. Shortly after, the neighbor shut the shed and left for Florida. The next two days in PA were 100 degrees. Pistol was found eight days later by another neighbor’s dog who was attracted by the smell in the shed.
Not meaning to condone the violence, a way ought to be found to use this tragedy as a vehicle for bringing the people of New Orleans closer together.
What do you all think of the news about the FCC’s swearing policy getting tossed? I once was working in post on a half hour comedy, where we were going round and round with the NBC censors over a single word in a show. They said it sounded like the actor said “frickin’” when the word written by the writers was “freakin’”. Sat and listened to it over and over and over. I don’t remember what the outcome was, though. Still…nothing like what we hear nowadays. Worse, what we see in advertisement.
Eric, bush and cheney fit your description to a tee so what are you going to do about the treasonous duo?
Meanwhile U.S. DoJ is charging whistleblower Bradley Manning. Faces up to 52 years in prison, though there is nothing in the charging docs that he has endangered national security.
Is that what happened to your collie? I’m so sorry, ghost. How horrible for you. Just tragic.
Mornin’, BT, pups
I’m sorry to hear about Pistol. I had hope for a happier ending to his disappearance.
Wondering why we all waste our time of shit like that.
From what I’ve been able to gather over the past month or so, there is a very real possibility that capping the BOP may cause eruptions of oil elsewhere in the sea floor around the oil deposit, which would mean uncontrolled leaking for (probably) years or decades.
Good morning, everyone. My work email is down and network connectivity keeps being interrupted. GAH.
How awful. Condolences on the loss of your canine friend.
Well, at the time, it was a paycheck for me. I think I know what you mean however. Silly nitpicking.
Feds are going to use Manning as an example. That’s never good.
So sorry about Pistol, ghost. Like SD I was also hoping for a better outcome.
Ah, the electronic gods are just keeping you on your toes for the countdown. *g*
Timing is good; they can keep playing the Mel Gibson tapes…more released this am. I am always amazed/struck by folks who really cannot keep their mouths shut.
Im so sorry about Pistol…a really sad discovery. The way pets can break our hearts…Take care.
I just finished a book about the Spanish Inquisition. One of the lines read We all must grieve alone. One of the hardest things to do is to mourn and let time pass, in my experience.
Yeah, if you listen to the interview, it’s SOP for the govt. Intimidation of one to prevent others. Greenwald makes the point that they tried to do the same thing to Ellsberg, only then they got caught. Not today. PTB discovered that, for a brief moment they had relinquished control of part of the media, so they ‘corrected’ that mistake.
In 2008 Obama said that as president he would indeed ask his new Attorney General and his deputies to “immediately review the information that’s already there” and determine if an inquiry is warranted — but he also tread carefully on the issue, in line with his reputation for seeking to bridge the partisan divide. He worried that such a probe could be spun as “a partisan witch hunt.” However, he said that equation changes if there was willful criminality, because “nobody is above the law.”
Oh, I hadn’t thought about it that way. Good connection, Bev.
My recollections from what I’ve read here and elsewhere was speculation that the first junk shot and mud pumping was kind of a preliminary pressure testing for the same purpose, i.e. seeing what else might possibly have already failed in that system. Though I don’t remotely begin to understand the engineering, this “fix,” to me seems like the latest attempt to get the oil rather than to just plug the hole.
to ghostof911, sorry to hear about your loss. My cat was directly under my feet the whole weekend of the 4th.
I haven’t seen our friend Margaret here for a couple mornings. If you’re lurking, dear, would you enter and sign in, please.
Except GWB and his torturing compatriots. Look forward, don’tcha know.
It’s been very hot here for several days and we’re already starting to get a few fires. Used to be fire season wasn’t until the end of the summer. I hate to be a whiny pants, but wahhhhhh. After the fires two years ago, our hillsides have even more dry brush than ever. Like there’s not enough stuff to worry about.
A month or so ago my friend Cathy told me about a man who comes into the restaurant who has to give up his cat cuz he’s moving into a condo that doesn’t allow animals. I didn’t make contact with him because I wanted someone else to step up and provide a home for this little guy. When I got back to work after lunch yesterday there Tom was, waiting for me. 70yo guy who’s had 2 heart attacks but is still active as a professional whistler, of all things. Turns out I’m pretty much the home of last resort. Very emotional 15 minutes. Spent all evening mulling the situation over. I had called him earlier and said I’d take Stanley but it made me really think about all the other folks and their animals who are being separated in these times. It’s not an abstraction any more. Stanley is an 8yo purebred, with papers, Devon Rex and he’ll be coming to live with me today. Really a sad situation that has me way off center.
Keeping fingers crossed on fires. It’s about all I can do these days.
Oh, Dragon. Don’t you worry. We’re not counting anymore. Is there anyway some organization can help subsidize the food costs at Chez Tiger? Bless your heart.
I’m about to be homeless. I don’t know what I’m going to do about Kuroneko. I’d send her to one of my Senators but they’d probably give her to Bill Frist or something. I guess ASPCA is where she’ll have to go. I can’t make her live in the car with me. :(
From what I’ve heard the last couple of days, capturing the oil with this new device will be a fallback option if total capping looks like it will cause problems elsewhere. Hence the slow closing of the valves and the pressure testing. Of course, I’m no expert either — just going by what I heard Robert Cavnar and Steiner report.
O My, sorry for the owner. As to you…sounds like a great cat!! You are very kind; lucky cat.
I know the dangers you face in Manhattan, but what disasters do you fear at your country home? I’m not familiar with your area.
Oh, Margaret, we were just looking for you. How awful.
Do you have friends you can stay with? Any plans for a switch to Austin? I know it’s a long drive, but you can come and stay with me.
Goodness, SD. Hard to imagine there are so few good homes for pets these days. All the best with the new addition.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Irak: 4,412
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,178
Iraki and Afghan casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M
US MBS 2010: 24,056 and counting
Today
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Rest in Peace, Pistol.
Namaste
You’re correct, SD. Too many animals are, for one reason or another, being separated from their owners these days, and it makes me sick. Shelter activity around here is big and getting bigger, and all of that in the face of increasing budget pressure. At least there are those who care enough to try to take up the slack.
As an aside, you’ve probably already seen this, but I just stumbled onto it a few days ago. A very cool thing…
Wouldn’t be bipartisan.
A Palin marriage…Bristol and Levi to marry. Wonder what Mama Bear says about that.
None. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.
(((Margaret))) So sorry.
I appreciate that, but you might get cramps in them. A lifted up thought here and there might be more comfortable for you. *g*
This scares me on a number of levels. Mama Bear will no doubt figure a way to turn it into more ammo for her
VisionGrifter Quest. They were too scared to tell her, so they went to Us magazine instead.
NOT suggesting you shouldn’t have posted this comment, but geez WHO CARES about Bristol and Levi??? It’s just another shiny object.
Margaret, I’m serious. If it comes down to me or the car, I’d choose me. And, you can stop off in Denver, Colorado on your way.
Did an escapism thingy on Saturday. I’m tryin’.
When I was young we had an upright piano, and a cat we used to put in the basement at night. If we forgot to close the piano keys, invariably she would “play” to wake us up in the early morning hours to let her out and FEED her. Brings back fond memories of my first beloved cat, Tinkerbell.
Thanks Deb. Don’t know what I’m going to do yet.
What did you do? Gimmee.
So sorry about Pistol ghost. So very sorry.
Margaret, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
((((for both of you))))
True, but they are part of the landscape….Imagine that this woman may be about to run for President…and some people will vote for her. Really amazing.
You’re smart and a survivor. You’ll figure something out. In the mean time, you know how to find me.
But…since she reads “all of the magazines,” they must have known she would just find out anyway. heh…
This.
Oh, That Escapism. You did a very fine job, and the thread went on a long, long time into the day. Kudos, friend.
For her, and all of the other deranged pathetic wingnuts who are running in various states. Frightening, actually, that people would support these unhinged nuts.
I see that Bachmann is leading her opponent, so apparently she isn’t too nutty for a segment of the Minnesota population.
That’s about the coolest alarm clock one could ever hope to have. And kitties are smart enough not to get sucked into that whole “daylight savings time” thing. (Where we trick ourselves into thinking we’re getting up at the same time, when (as a matter of fact), we’re getting up an hour earlier.)
Yep. I kept checking back & there were new additions. Had a grand time.
PS, yours was a lot more fun than the diary I wrote the next day. It did help me though, to set my thoughts down. Got that grief thing rolling. We planted a yellow rose bush in the yard yesterday, in her memory. One day at a time.
The only time in my entire 67 years that I didn’t live on DST were the 3 or so years after I moved here to Indiana and they hadn’t yet adopted DST. I love it, because I have hours in the evening to ride my bike. But I’m a morning person so getting up early is rarely a problem.
Plus the irony that she is the McCain gift that just keeps on giving…he must be very proud.
How dare you speak about Meg Whitman that way. heh
Ack! Tell me there’s no way she will beat Brown. Tell me!!! Right now. *g*
And Carly, don’t forget Carly. And Rand Paul and Sharron Angle and….and…
An embarrassment of wingnut riches, don’tcha know…LOL.
Yes, I was very sorry to hear about your friend. Your obituary was a very nice tribute to someone who had a long & wonderful life.
But, but, but, Sharron says that God wants her to win. Where have we heart that before?
Actually, I’m getting worried. If she would agree to meet Brown for some honest debating, I’d feel better. However, she’s doing everything she can to avoid doing that for as long as possible. Accordingly, Brown should relentlessly emphasize the point that she’s too lame to engage him in open dialogue. The only way to fight against her level of spending is to bring the fight to her in very public ways.
Thanks. And, yes she did.
Absolutely. He needs some affordable face time with the public.
I’m not paying much attention, but I seem to have picked up that Brown is running a lame campaign. Is that accurate?
Along the same lines as my #69, Steve Benen has a nice post up:
When an Entire Political Party Moves to Bizzaro World
Steve posts a lot about wingnuttia in various places and he is always a good read. Incredibly prolific, regularly turns out at least a dozen posts a day, and 3 or 4 on Saturdays and Sundays.
These four are the ones they know about. Have any of the self-admitted civilian “human hunters” been charged?
I saw that somewhere this morning too….sitting waiting for the other candidate to fail, or something like that. Could have been from an overnight thread, which I skim in the morning.
He needs to repeatedly shame her. “Why won’t Meg Whitman agree to meet me? I’m available anytime, anyplace.” It would quickly become apparent that decades of experience trumps (or at least should trump) a shitpot full of cash.
And wasn’t there a chunk of mismanagement in her HP departure? I do not recall the details, but I think that story would be relevant for both competence and honesty.
That seems like a fair assessment to me. For all practical purposes, he’s pretty much off the radar. Maybe he’s keeping his powder dry, I dunno…
She physically slapped around an employee. The employee was paid a couple hundred G’s in hush money and (if I recall correctly) still works at eBay. I wish some high-profile lawyers would come forward and offer to help her break her confidentiality agreement, so we could get the story on the record.
Blue Texan,
If Oakland is any guide, I would not dance just yet. There of course may be a trial and perhaps a conviction. But the two 64,000 dollar questions are A) What charge(s) will they be convicted of and B) What will the sentence(s) be?
Maybe he’s being like the attorney who with holds discovery until the last minute so as not to give the other a chance to spin. And, Bev, I’ve heard she did pull a lot of shit while ceo. Once that comes out, specifically and repeatedly, I would think that CA citizens will be clear.
New post up top…
Good strategy. I have no doubt that his staff is doing plenty of research on her. And I’m sure vice versa is also true.
Very sorry to hear this.
In the past you mentioned the problems you had to deal with around letting the bank take your house and the goofballs that suggested it was a fun experience in combination with a lack of moral fortitude. I hope the best for you and yours and am sorry I have nothing to offer like demi.
Simply making anyone in the military, intelligence or the corporate government hybrid system look bad is probably sufficient as of the Patriot Act. State secrets appear to include embarrassment do to incompetence.
Rest in peace, gentle pup. May you be together again in the next life.
Margaret, I have an empty bedroom, as well. There is a sofa sleeper that I am told it is very comfy. You are more than welcome to crash here, in lieu of your car. I’ve stayed at the ever popular Auto B & B, please believe me, there is very little to recommend it. I
I have to add that I have a rescue dog sharing the premises here and she is firmly in the anti-cat camp.
I feel sure we have met at one of the protests, likely the “Three Corners”, which took place after the infamous mid-decade Tom Delay & GOPAC, Only in Texas is a check not cash, Redistricting, when we all met on the corners where the recently redrawn Congressional Districts-10, 21, and 25 converged.
Ditto. I grieve with you, Ghost.
If I remember correctly, it was Carly at HP, not Meg.
Carly talks about supporting small business. I guess that is correct because she tried like hell to make HP into one as CEO.
I intended to refer to Carly, of course. Sorry if there was confusion.
How hollow…
How about the torture at Gitmo? How about pursuit of war crimes charges against Bush? Oh, what’s that you say? Oh.
Sorry, it’s all a show.
When is Holder going to take action on the Philadelphia Black Panther voter intimidation matter? That’s at least as important as this.
I’m still waiting.
In some alternate universe voter intimidation and murder are equal threats.
