Newt running for prez. I can’t bear these self-indulgent. self-important baby boomers. As I am of that generation, I know a lot who aren’t, but none of them are in politics. I had to stop reading The Pact because I’d had enough.

I’ll lay almost all of the current rancor in political discourse directly on Newt’s doorstep. He’s a poisonous piece of work.

He certainly contributed. But he was enabled by a lot of people. Otherwise he’d be toast by now.

Looking at the Cantor article (the stimulus one):

– Cantor job fair employer AT&T has received two contracts totaling $837,550 from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer Bryant & Stratton College received contracts totaling $209,571 from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer Chesterfield County received grants totaling $406,773 from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer CSX Transportation received grants totaling over $5.7 million from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer Goodwill Industries International has received grants of over $6.4 million from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer Northrop Grumman Corporation has received grants of over $2.6 million from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer University of Richmond has received grants totaling $750,964 from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer Nationwide Insurance has received grants totaling $25,617 from the Recovery Act.

– Cantor job fair employer United Way of Greater Richmond has received a $61,125 grant from the Recovery Act.

I wonder what percentage of these contracts/grants will be serviced by foreigners. How many of the jobs created by this business will be outsourced? I’m betting the vast majority of them, but I admit I’m bitter.

Or will be flash in the pan hiring for lowly easily disposable positions that will last about 6mo to a year and then that’s it. Those sums of money (looking at the companies they went to) are chump change. Do you really think long term financial success can be had for such small amounts of money?

It is like the stimulus in general, we’ve put off the pain from the financial crisis and yes, it would have been worse without it, but it seems like all we’ve done is delayed the inevitable.

I see where the film director Polanski has had the Swiss government go out on a limb and refuse to honor their treaty with the US and extradite him under the warrant issued for his raping of children, saying that the secret testimony taken under California’s unique witness about to die law from the former prosecutor about the first trial – taken to be used if a US Appeals court wanted to review facts of law (they do not review facts of the case), was important for them to review, knowing that they had no right to the document and indeed under US law the document was sealed until an appeals court asked for review. So no sealed doc to the Swiss means no jail time for Polanski (he fled before sentencing, after pleading guilty.

There were no holes in the original case (convicted for drugging and statutory raping 13-year-old Samantha Geimer but Polanski says she wanted it and he did not drug her – he got the girls mother to drug her – and he has Whoopi Goldberg explaining that Polanski merely raped the girl, not “raped-raped” her – because apparently giving a 13-year-old alcohol and Quaaludes and repeatedly refusing to comply with her demands that you stop orally, vaginally and anally raping her isn’t “rape-rape.”) except for the fact he was allowed to plead guilty to an obviously greatly reduced charge.

Again the Swiss do not have a right to review the case. Yet they demanded more info – and now say the fact they did not get additional info means they can ignore international law and their signed treaties. Folks forget he had a 15 year old in 1975 (Nastassja Kinski) in a relationship as they say in the pedophile community. He is not a one timer.

It is solely a case of the rich not paying for their crimes in jail time – just via a needed kiss here and there to officials.

I also note that the media reports did not report Polanski’s religion (actually a good thing since pedophiles are not religion based), but if he had been a priest the media would be all over it, but since he is an atheist his religion is not mentioned. But then no one who has ever observed the media over time has ever said the media was fair and balanced.

I’d imagine the folks who get those jobs, regardless of who they are or where they came from, will be thankful for the work and the pay.

This has more to do with the psychology of rape victims than with the law.

Yep. Also note that most of these numbers are grants to already large corporations. Jobs, on the other hand, generally are created by small businesses. Throwing money at big businesses who can outsource or otherwise move profit centers around may look like it creates new employment when at best it might keep some of the urban locals treading water while the less urbane resort to getting out of the pool.

Since Cantor has very little reason to care about jobs and every reason to care about giving money to businesses that will recycle some of that back into lobbyist donations his willingness to brag to his donors is a more obvious explanation about this particular bit of grandstanding. Which might simply be “look we tricked the Ds again”.

My experience with job fairs is that employers take applications from people who show up at the fair looking for work.

I guess not many folks in KS read the book about why they vote against their own best interests.

After working as a mental health counselor for 20 years, no, that is not what I’m saying. The victim’s input in this process has been covered and may, repeat may, have figured into Switzerland’s decision.

I’ve worked with abused spouses, both sexes, and rape victims and your inference is offensive.

Sorry – your comment was offensive

Here is Polanski in his own words

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ9dpNe2NO8&feature=player_embedded

note the comments that do not comment on his feeling no guilt – but do try to defend him – indeed one brings up your point that he made amends to the girl and she is not asking that he be jailed at this time.

I made a point, not an excuse, defense, justification or rationalization. I didn’t say anything about his making amends or anything else. If you’ve got to be right, ok, look in the mirror and say “You’re right.”
