Ben Stein is so very sad. Sad Ben! Sad Stein!

A few weeks ago, I bought a book of front pages of newspapers from World War II. I have been reading it avidly ever since. The news is terrifying and uplifting, of course. But it is the sense of Western resolve against the Axis powers that is so powerful. There is a purpose in the stories of the whole nations of the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union joined to fight the Nazi and Japanese war machines. Fighting, producing, rationing, restraining, cheering, mourning, all done with a will to win.

And, you had no doubt whose side the newspapers were on.

They were on the side of Robert Taft!

Oh that is a joke. I always find the right wing nostalgia for the Unified Fightin’ Spirit of The Big One comical, because I like to imagine what they would have been yammering about during the FDR years: Ben Stein, unbalanced as he is, would have found an argument impeaching FDR over Lend-Lease. Am I wrong? No. I am right.

Because what totally kills me is how WWII is the ultimate liberal argument: government intervention, wisely done, is good for the nation, creates jobs, creates national unity, and just… works.

Hell, don’t believe me? Ask the always hilarious Conservipedia:

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States of America from 1933-45. He presided over the majority of the Great Depression, which did not end until the attack on Pearl Harbor.

My good friend Dr. Dick, in the comments, will perhaps find this amusing…

I sure do!
