Military authorities are investigating the friendly fire deaths of five Afghan soldiers Wednesday in eastern Afghanistan, officials said.
A NATO patrol in Ghazni province fired on the Afghan soldiers, mistaking them for insurgents, a statement from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said.
“This loss of life is tragic, and we offer condolences to all those who lost loved ones,” said Navy Capt. Jane Campbell, ISAF Joint Command spokeswoman. “We work extremely hard to coordinate and synchronize our operations, and we deeply regret the loss of lives from our Afghan partners.”
I’m sure everything will be awesome in 12 months.

About Firedoglake
Two Friedman Units to victory.
I watched Rachel with Richard last night. I know that she takes some heat from people who criticize her, but I think she’s very brave for being there in person to report a perspective of our involvement in Afghanistan.
Million dollar homes on an unpaved street without sewers? That’s another nutso aspect of that country. And, our involvement there.
I want a gun rug.
Good morning.
I simply can’t watch her Afghanistan broadcasts, much as I think she’s wonderful.
Our involvement there makes zero sense.
Good morning, Demi, BT, Stony and other lurkers.
Edit: and Margaret.
But, she passed on the emeralds. I guess one can purchase those anywhere, but really, how many stores carry those rugs with ak-47′s?
Morning, Molly. Hope all is well with you and yours.
Yup, me and mine are fine. Heat is gonna break today, I think. And it’s a short work week, so…(the closer I get to my Sept. 1st retirement, the less I want to get up and go to the office).
Maybe she doesn’t like green. I would have bought one of those inlaid lapis boxes though.
Morning everyone.
Just returned from a few days of R&R. The only segment I saw was Rachael in a market with some animal with their heads still attached to show their freshness. Interesting.
Morning Pups, the only thing I know about Maddow is what I read on the internets. I don’t have cable. She was great when she was on Air America.
Isn’t it interesting how that works? One might think it would be easier towards the end.
Her website has lots of videos on it.
You can watch every show online on her website the morning after broadcast.
Mornin’, BT, pups
Emeralds? I remember a store in Bangkok where the upstairs contained huge containers of uncut rubies and emeralds. Bought 2 nice star rubies for meself and a couple emeralds for Lyn.
In other news, the war on the homeless continues. Full disclosure, I’m a part of the St Pete Food Not Bombs group.
I like my job, although it has become boring in the past year or so. But maybe just because there is an end in sight I am more impatient to get there.
You should catch some of her videos at her website. I remember when she was so shy and halting on Air America the first time she interviewed Pat Buchanan. Time wise it wasn’t that long ago but it was a whole lifetime of the universe ago in her maturing as a media figure.
And here I am just glad that my student loan will be paid off by this time next year.
It just proves to us that you are not a drug addicted lazy person.
My (GRRR) Blue Dog rep, Joe Donnelly, voted against the UI extension. Just one more reason not to vote for him again. When I write to him I get form letters frequently unrelated to my issue. What a loser.
Not only that but the West Virgina Governor caved at the mere rumor of a lawsuit so now a Senator won’t be seated and we’re back to not having the votes in the Senate to pass a jobs bill or funding for unemployment benefits. I can’t help but think that the DNC had something to do with this so they can say “Look at the Republicans denying benefits to the most vulnerable”. Despicable bastards. Republicans or Democrats: willing to use the poor as pawns.
Now, we’re talking about a really schmart cookie, there.
The Dems want another ConservaDem to get that seat.
I remember Tony Blankley trying to debate with her once. She never once brought up her Rhodes scholarship but he was so insecure he pointed out two times that he had two degrees, (though no doctorates). I can’t remember what the forum was. She was still fairly shy though and eviscerated him with those liberal facts. Envious much Tony?
Puppy Friends, I’m feeling rather puny today. I’ve got a little cold and yesterday I found out that my friend Nez who broke her femur several weeks ago has taken a downturn. She’s developed pneumonia and so she’s not getting anymore physical therapy for the leg. It doesn’t bode well, and I might just have to go back to bed and stay there for the morning.
Yes, I’m feeling sorry for myself. :(
If you can, go visit her. Should cheer both of you up.
(((demi)))
Sometimes going back to bed is a good cure for the “punys” although maybe a brisk walk or a bike ride or a trip to your fave local breakfast spot would help your outlook even more. Can you go find a sweet thang to take your friend to cheer her up?
I listen to Left, Right and Center on some Fridays. He always sounds like a wing jerk.
Feel better demi. And the best to your friend. :)
I’m catching up on the last week’s news. I see Kos has been banned from MSNBC. Is Marcy still banned?
What did Kos do?
That’s because he always is. As the (enthusiastic) editor of the Washington Times, what else could he be?
Her family has been very protective, as in every time I call they shut me out. I only found out about the pneumonia because She called Me. They don’t even call the church and give them updates. I really want to see her, but, especially with this cold, I fear I shouldn’t. She’s a very strong, stubborn person and I’ve always tried to respect her wishes. I fear she doesn’t want me to see her the way she is now. She’ll be turning 90 in two weeks. I’ve got the photo of her and my daughter at the wedding on the mantle with lit candles next to it.
He had the temerity to criticize Scarborough on Twitter and Joe went whining to Phil Griffin about it like the weenie with little man syndrome that he is.
She needs to be gotten up out bed and walked demi. Pneumonia kills by fluid pooling in the lungs.
Thanks, Peg. I think I’ll go into the kitchen and put up a pot of chicken soup. And grab some C.
She does have fluid in her lungs. Her personal doctor has been in to see her and has consulted with the physician at the hospital. I trust her because she is a very bright and compassionate woman who even made house calls to Nez’s husband when he was fighting cancer. Kept him alive for three years longer than the doctors at Cedar Sinai predicted. They’re talking about draining the fluid. When she tried to walk the other day, she took four steps and collapsed.
JoeScar is very thin-skinned — especially on twitter for some reason. After snapping at me, he blocked me because I pointed out to him that he either misunderstood an article, or was deliberately misinterpreting it.
Here’s his twitter feed in case anyone wanted to say anything to him: http://twitter.com/joenbc
Read the whole thing, including the tweets, over at big orange…
Why I am blacklisted by MSNBC
Another:
MSNBC only bans Scarborough critics
It hurts me to say it but I have to give Tweety his due. Kos has criticized him MUCH more than Scarborough but he apparently hasn’t gone whining to Griffin about it. Either that or MSNBC is guilty of allowing criticism of people perceived to be liberal but not conservatives. But that can’t be! The media and especially MSNBC is librul…right?
Lemme see now, “Did your mom have any kids not born brain dead?” should fit on twitter, right?
Yep. He definitely has little man syndrome. Not only that but he was the 1963 pro abortion poster child. Oops! Guess I’ll never be on MSNBC!
Plenty of room for that :)
Not to be nit picky, but which do you think is smaller? Mind, heart or the little guy? See how puny I’m being?
I think little man syndrome includes under development of all three of those demi. I’ll bet he’s got one big ol’ pickup truck though.
He is a weenie, if that’s what you mean. LOL.
Thanks, Moll. When the sun comes out later, I’ll go work in the garden. That’ll help.
And, a Gun. Not just a rug, but the real deal. Oh brother.
He and Buchanan used to joke about their Lincoln Navigators whenever there was a story on the environment, gas prices or climate change.
Yeah, I think his case may go all the way into teeny weenie, itsty bitsy, tiny, little man syndrome.
Ah yes! The rich man’s pick up truck. Bet he has it all jacked up with mud tires on.
Catch me up on another story I missed. What’s the background on the Black Panther/voter intimidation story. I see Fox News is having a field day with it. And, I’ve watched the YouTube. Looks bad. What’s the flip side?
As in, get out the magnifying glass. I’d better go chop some veggies for my chickie soup before I say something I’ll regret later.
Thanks for the chat all. Laters.
Off to swim in the great capitalist cesspool.
US KIA Irak: 4,412
US KIA Afghanistan: 1,160
Iraki and Afghan casualties: estimates vary to over 1.5M (not counting those of the Afghan Army we kill by “mistake”)
US MBS 2010: 23,312 and counting
Today
Be good to yourselves, and all other living things.
Namaste
Then, after banning him, Griffin and another exec over there asked Markos not to go public with it. So my take away is “Please don’t tell everybody that Scarborough and I are acting like petulant children just because we’re acting like petulant children…”
The flip side is that the accuser J Christian Adams is a former DOJ lawyer under Bush who was one of the architects or one of the beneficiaries of firing US attorneys who wouldn’t prosecute Democrats for bogus “voter fraud” cases.
TBogg and some other Firedogs were banned from a website run by some plagiarist named Ben Domenech. It is much more funny than Kos getting banned.
I saw that but I also saw the Youtube which is damning.
So was the ACORN video but now we know how heavily edited that was. I’m not in a position to render judgment but you have to look at the source and this guy isn’t exactly unimpeachable.
Or a cowboy hat. Morning everyone, trying to figure out which setting the young one changed so I can get my speakers or headphones to operate.
Bluetoe @ 10: Same here, old tech, dial-up, broadcast TV when it works at all, mainly one channel PBS and FM radio. FDL helps make it all better.
Keep on telling myself that I am not missing all that much and if it isn’t being discussed here, it is of minimal consequence.
Rachel Maddow is not the only smart cookie here, POVs and insights here are very much appreciated.
It’s quite indicative that they shoot anything that moves. That’s the reason for the preponderance of civilian kills by same. A throwback to Vietnam, for one.
Maddow and Engel talked in midst of luxury homes amid unpaved streets/no sewer lines/massive pile of garbage that will never be collected. It came out that Afghans able to pay taxes refuse to do so, hence this perennial situation of zero utilities. The situation shows hopelessness for the population while the rich steal funds and thrive right within U.S./NATO presence. This is the first time I have seen something evil so entrenched that it’s impossible to envision the corrupt Afghan government doing the right thing for the good of the country and its people.
My question is why is Rachel Maddow in the Afghanistan to begin with? Good PR, smooshing with the military? That’s what we need in solid independent reporting.. good fraternization.
Really stupid. Didn’t even bother listening to the clip after the first 45s.
Tea Party’s idea of the best of possible worlds.
I agree. I thought we learned our lesson about embedded journalists years ago. Besides, she has Engel on via satellite all the time. I fail to see how her presence there adds any value to the story.
What’s stopping you from flying over there and being an independent journalist?
