Senators are doing the right thing by pushing an $8 billion addition to fund several more months of COBRA subsidies for workers laid off after June 1. We wonder, then, why House Dems, who say they care deeply about health care, didn’t sign on.

The meaningless debate over Lisa Murkowski’s bid to stop the EPA from complying with a Supreme Court order and regulate carbon emissions will take up the whole day in the US Senate. I say “meaningless” because it has no chance of passage, after President Obama’s veto threat. But inside Versailles it’s more important to measure “humiliation” than anything else.

Union guys are angry right now. They are sitting on the benches, they are paying union dues, and losing insurance benefits. They are watching corporate America gain strength and infiltrate the environment at big industrial sites. They are feeling like pieces of meat, instead of skilled human beings. Imagine middle class life in America without the unions? It’s the beginning of the slippery slope where humans are just cogs in a wheel.

Sen Tom Udall backed up my memory when he appeared at the America’s Future Now conference Wednesday, regarding the attempt to privatize Social Security under the Bush administration. Udall said that “as I remember it, we had a vote, a very close vote in the House, and it didn’t succeed. It never made it to the Senate.”

I just hope this stupid iPad data compromise makes the Masters of the Universe with their new 3G iPads think a little bit about all the ways AT&T sucks.
