Writing on his blog last fall, the NYT’s Paul Krugman remarked, “I trust Joe Romm on Climate.” I agree with Mr. Krugman: when it comes to climate change — whether you are interested in either the science or the politics — Joe Romm’s Climate Progress blog is the single best source of information on the web. He’s blunt, extremely knowledgeable and solutions-oriented, a rare combination of attributes that leave him particularly well-suited to cover the scientific and political context of climate and energy policy.
We Need ACORN |
| By: David Swanson Sunday June 20, 2010 1:20 pm |
I don’t know of any similar organization. Yet, when I imagine a logical organization to build in our society, I wind up at ACORN. If ACORN did not exist, in other words, it would be necessary to invent it. All we actually need do is reconstitute it.
Peter Peterson’s Fiscal Times Blesses Deficit Reducers as Being Non-Ideological and Washington Post Concurs |
| By: Dean Baker Sunday June 20, 2010 12:30 pm |
Peter Peterson’s new service, the Fiscal Times, had a news article in the Washington Post telling readers that people like Peterson who believe that it is urgent to cut Social Security and Medicare are non-ideological, in contrast to the people who think it is important to defend programs on which the vast majority of workers will depend in their retirement.
Republicans Hypocritically Attack Joe Barton (R-TX) for Clearly Articulating Their Official Position on BP |
| By: Blue Texan Sunday June 20, 2010 11:30 am |
Why all of the Republican hand-wringing and pearl-clutching and phony outrage about Barton’s apology to BP’s CEO? Look at this press release from Republican Study Committee chairman Tom Price (R-GA), dated 6/16 — the day before Barton’s nationally-televised apology to BP’s chairman.

The National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform was organized by the President to get recommendations for cutting benefits and raising taxes on middle Americans. They can’t imagine any alternatives, certainly not taxing the rich, who have already suffered hurt feelings from all that ugly talk about their little screw-ups. When trying to change the power structure, it is crucial to choose political candidates and organizations truly dedicated to your goals. The trappings of power are very enticing. An outsider candidate, once elected, might think it’s more rewarding to compromise with the current power structure for modest change, and gain a personal place in the hierarchy, than fight doggedly for several years for real reform.
