SC, NC, MS, UT Primary Runoff Liveblog – Part One

By: Jon Walker Tuesday June 22, 2010 5:20 pm

Tonight features primary runoff elections in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Mississippi. There is also a primary in Utah, but thanks to their convention selection process that can select or weed out candidates (Bob Bennett was defeated in that process, for example), it has some similarities to a runoff election. Mississippi has very little going on, so the big events of the night are the GOP governor’s race in SC, the Dem Senate race in NC, and the GOP primary in UT. For a preview of the night’s races click here and you can find update election results at Politico.

85% of Americans Say Workplace Safety Regulations are “Very Important”

By: Michael Whitney Tuesday June 22, 2010 4:40 pm

The Public Welfare Foundation released a poll this week on Americans’ attitudes on paid sick days and other workplace regulations. In the poll was something interesting as we consider the need to protect cleanup workers hired by BP to clean up the oil disaster in the Gulf. The poll showed that when asked which government workplace regulations were “very important,” a full 85% said that “workplace safety” was very important.

Don’t Get Fooled Again: Cat Food Comm Tries Greenspan’s Old Tricks to Cut Social Security

By: masaccio Tuesday June 22, 2010 4:00 pm

The deficit hawks think we are so stupid we’ll once again fall for the Greenspan shell game: raise Social Security taxes and put the excess in a Trust Fund so it will be there when we need it. The President should be ashamed of himself, appointing this bunch of charlatans to deal with the non-problem of Social Security.

Obama Drilling Moratorium Overturned in Curious Court Decision

By: bmaz Tuesday June 22, 2010 2:35 pm

What else could have been behind this bunk decision? Well, for one, Judge Feldman’s disclosures indicate he is invested in and tied to Transocean and Ocean Energy concerns, among others, which certainly ought to raise a red flag. The other question I have is whether or not the government’s attorneys or staff gave some informal clue to the court that they would not be upset in the least if the court were to rule against them. There are lots of ways to accomplish this and, yes, it does occasionally occur. I have no idea or evidence that is the case here; but this is simply an inexplicable decision to the best of my experience. Something funny happened on the way to the forum, that is for sure.

Banning Secret Government Meetings Isn’t Hard, Or Why Some FCC Officials Should Fear Going to Jail

By: Scarecrow Tuesday June 22, 2010 1:40 pm

It was no surprise when the Wall Street Journal reported that senior officials at the Federal Communications Commission were meeting privately with affected industry to consider possible solutions to the disagreement over “net neutrality.” But why are they allowed to do that?

Accountability Missing in Official Reaction to McChrystal Comments

By: David Dayen Tuesday June 22, 2010 12:55 pm

Ultimately, a good part of the discontent in America comes down to this simple fact: at a certain level above the masses, nobody gets held accountable for anything.
