There are people who hate performing, people who do it and maybe don’t mind, and then there are people who live for it. Ray strikes me as squarely in the third category.
thank goodness! had the neutral ground wire from the pole to the house break and fry. was getting wild voltage cycles, up to 156 and then down to 33. totally fucking killed the cable modem, wifi router, and my 32″ tv, all of which were plugged into surge protector power strips.
am a much happier camper :) i saw a coyote walking the mud flats at low tide today so token is unhappy at being kept inside and only on a leash outside.
There are some things surge suppressors won’t stop, and that’s among them.I saw a whole lot of fried surge suppressors back when I was supporting Army computers in the field. They could wire the power up just about every way imaginable.
I had a lightning strike a few years ago that fried my computer and my phone line. Everyone said “You should have used a surge protector,” and of course I had been using one. But I got a more expensive one.
BTW I was told that as they get old they don’t work as well….is that bs?
Today the weather was so beautiful that we had a lunch picnic on the grass oval. We were so bad, just stretched out on the blanket and did nothing but watch the clouds in a sky so blue.
Sometimes, but usually the problem is that they do their jobs, which is to fry themselves so your computers don’t fry, but then don’t let you know that. I don’t know how you test for that, at least with ordinary household tools. If you ever get another one, I’d suggest looking for one that has an indicator light or something for when that happens.
the good news is that they strung brand new electrical cable from the street all the way to the house where it connects on the roof cap thingie. and i have a claim form from the utility to fill out for the tv.
but yeah, from now on i’m gonna be real picky when i look for surge protectors. the two (cable and tv) were both fried and i didn’t know it until they got hooked up the voltmeter thingie afterwards.
My compter crashed twice trying to watch Ray.
Today the sun came out in the afternoon with the wind, I Jogged the horse trails on the hills above us. They break up the dunes into deep sand that builds the legs and lungs with a panoramic view of the Bay. Then gardened and cleaned good. Hit the 6pm vinyasa yoga class and she really put us through some paces it was great. Sorry you are having a tough stretch on limited funds. How about bringing the pod to Portland and having a garage sale? They also have great swap meet to replace TV.
wow i didn’t know that. i figure i will need 3… the one that the computer was plugged into held steady but the one for the tv and the one in the cable closet are good for doorjams only now….
To tell you the truth, I’ve never figured out what the price point is. It’s probably a bad sign if they’re next to the National Enquirer and the Chapstick, though.
my computer is hooked up to a more expensive one… don’t remember the price. it survived as did the laptop. otherwise, i wudda had to head to the pod house in portland to get my desktop outta the pod and there wudda been a lot more swear words tossed about.
Yes, and pretty inexpensive. APC and Tripp are both good ones, and you can get the smallish ones (good for a laptop or a small desktop) for $50 or so. Bigger ones for a big desktop or a tower $100-$150.
Great for power outages. I used one to power a little mini desklamp thing for a couple of days so I could read at night.
I’m a APC man myself. Good design always moving forward. I even like their newsletters. I own 4 of their surge protectors and 1 ups from them. I also have bought them for the non profit whose computers I support.
Same.
Last year they swapped out my old $500 unit for an updated version, rebated me $200, and paid for shipping.
APC is a great device from a great company.
I have to stop reading economic news. Makes me crazy. Also let me ask you here, do you think that enough media are on the case for worker breathing safety that I can step back and let the professionals do their job?
This is a big story and the “adults” are writing about it. (Funny I still feel like a kid in my head. )
it would seem the perfect time to sit back and see if the adults are really on the case or if they were just pumping ratings….. i have my fingers and toes crossed that there are enough but….. hope for the best and plan for the worst has been my motto ever since i was a little kid
There was a time when they were kinda snaky about documenting how their interfaces work, and changing batteries in them was a mystery. They got over that, though, and I have no complaints now.
At least, not about APC. I’ll never run out of complaints …
Same here on economic news. Unfortunately, I can’t help myself.
On the breathing stuff, I don’t know. The “adults” are interested now, but there will come a time when they won’t be. You know, some hot white woman will go missing, or some kid will fall down a well.
What is so irritating about that, and how they kept after John Edwards’ extra-marital activities, is that their political careers were essentially over. There are plenty of active politicians cheating on their spouses, or whatever. I really don’t care about that, either, but at least their indiscretions might have some relevance somehow.
Not that familiar with Albert King, but I’m guessing I should be. Page is certainly terrific, or was at the time. I haven’t seen hide nor hair of him in a while – apparently he’s not dead yet.
it was a lhp typo several years ago — and an instant classic to me. i love that phrase — it captures the media mindset so perfectly when it comes to scandals and d’s
Shoot, I’d be mad at the press for being such damn fools. To quote the story Suzanne linked:
MTV News took the novel step of contacting Richards’ manager, who responded with what sounded like a sigh, but was in fact an e-mail. The dad-snorting story, she explained, was, quote, “said in jest … [I] can’t believe anyone took [it] seriously.”
It’s one thing when a few get it wrong, but so many?
Ooooh, a tribute to Charles!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QExK2fCU1pM
you are a clever kid, Suzanne.

ray’s 80th birthday celebration is later this year….
Pretty quiet at the moment. How are things on the shore? Looks like power’s not a problem tonight.
it’s electric, Suzanne. How about where you are?
There are people who hate performing, people who do it and maybe don’t mind, and then there are people who live for it. Ray strikes me as squarely in the third category.

We got a nice cold front, it’s fantastic. One day it was the air was like steamy wet blankets, the next we were needing to use quilts to sleep.
oooooh i love nights where i need a quilt.. i sleep best when it is on the chilly side
I had a lightning strike a few years ago that fried my computer and my phone line. Everyone said “You should have used a surge protector,” and of course I had been using one. But I got a more expensive one.
BTW I was told that as they get old they don’t work as well….is that bs?

Wow, did you know there are surge protectors that have a remote control? I had no idea. Coulda used a few of those back in the day…

My compter crashed twice trying to watch Ray.

i never said i was having funding troubles bb. i said the utility company broke it so they get to pay for the replacements.
He died in 2004 . . . and he was on of the greats.

Well, with a little crazy glue you can make a sculpture out of them…
Awesome what I said forget it. (47)
I had to send my laptop to HP the hinges are bad to the bone. Won’t be here much as am on old desktop.

What exactly did you lose? And my condolances, BTW, regardless of fault or nature, what a tragedy!
cable modem, wifi router and my 32″ flat screen
I hate to break it to you, but Ray CHarles died six years ago…
I’m fine, and thinking about a UPS for your abode.
hey that guy — how ya doing tonight?
After a few days of 100F, only 88F today, cooled down FAST!
Got two more days of 80′s, then, hi 90′s and the Century Mark returns for a week it looks like.
Starts Sat . . . but kewl tonite, windows open, fan in them, and will save $ from AC and sleep like a baby!
*G*
Wow . . . glad your computer made it thru!!!!!
And glad to hear the utility will reimburse.
Good news among the gloom.
ups? brown? or is that some gizmo that surge protects the whole house?
Well, that sucks. I’m not a huge fan, obviously, but he was fun to watch.
I know the feeling. I left the festival right after Cocker
Saved many a radio station I worked at over the years.
Kept them on the air as long as the UPS at the transmitter worked, too.
*G*
The Teevee loss totally bites, Suz…! 8-(
Sleepy…see you later.
Mac, that’s one of my favorite songs. THanks.
thank goodness the little one in my bedroom survived.. and it wasn’t on a surge protector
Uninturrupted Power Supply.
Square black box, like a battery, only with bizzillions more juice in it.
Sorry, the latter.
Where’d his #61 go? It’s not there, no mo . . . .
It does bite, the big screen is so wonderful. Sorry! Hope that insurance will replace your tv.

Shopping Guide, Just A Starter Look At Them
Seems you’ll need batteries of sorts to keep the unit running for long periods of time . . .
Anyhoots, there’s some beginner info!
*hadnoideahomesystems*
To tell you the truth, I’ve never figured out what the price point is. It’s probably a bad sign if they’re next to the National Enquirer and the Chapstick, though.
I’m happy to share.

thanks dood
Times have changed!
Been out of radio since ’03.
Had NO idea there were home units!
They’re not blue anymore…
I got one about that price. Well, maybe $40, but still…I was without a computer for a year, and I wasn’t fooling around with no $6 surge thingy.
my computer is hooked up to a more expensive one… don’t remember the price. it survived as did the laptop. otherwise, i wudda had to head to the pod house in portland to get my desktop outta the pod and there wudda been a lot more swear words tossed about.

Willie, Leon and Ray
wow
The good UPS’s are pricey, but you are lucky – surges rarely get past your brick-charger.
You might want to see about getting a backup charger, so if this one took a hit, but has yet to die, you will be ready.
tomorrow is the 1st and i’m headed into town to do some shopping anyway…
Lurk did some trickery the other nite to elude his rightful 100…! ;-)
Classic Wille N Ray, Classic Tune
tis bad mojo for a lln front pager to get the 100 — not lurk
ray and johnny

Not always successful…!
That’s sure a different take on Ring of Fire. So is this one. You wouldn’t know it’s the same song.
tell me about it dood *sigh*
wow cujo.. never heard that take on it before…
You did. And so am I.
Social Distortion pretty much epitomizes different.
Cave, Lurkus cavet.
What… No pecans…? ;-)
lurk will eat dark chocolate without pecans… i figured the choclate was the goal and pecans just the whipped cream on the cherry pie … so to speak…
Willie and Leon just stood back and let him play. A wonderful moment.
you don’t know me
I don’t think that they had any choice but to stand back…zounds!!
thanks again for that gem.
i kinda like this bunch with this newbie (at the time)
I’m a APC man myself. Good design always moving forward. I even like their newsletters. I own 4 of their surge protectors and 1 ups from them. I also have bought them for the non profit whose computers I support.

That musta been, alright. Except for Bonham being stoned. That was pretty normal, IIRC.
I was furious at Keith Richards, must’ve been when he snorted his daddy’s ashes, during their Aloha Stadium leg of ‘Bridges to Babylon’…! 8-(
…. they will find a dem and try to gin up a scandal as a bright shiny thong
what I remember was that BB King was the least impressive of the three guitarists I heard play that night.
WHAATT?

Bright shiny thong? Like it…
