thank goodness! had the neutral ground wire from the pole to the house break and fry. was getting wild voltage cycles, up to 156 and then down to 33. totally fucking killed the cable modem, wifi router, and my 32″ tv, all of which were plugged into surge protector power strips.

am a much happier camper :) i saw a coyote walking the mud flats at low tide today so token is unhappy at being kept inside and only on a leash outside.

There are some things surge suppressors won’t stop, and that’s among them.I saw a whole lot of fried surge suppressors back when I was supporting Army computers in the field. They could wire the power up just about every way imaginable.

We got a nice cold front, it’s fantastic. One day it was the air was like steamy wet blankets, the next we were needing to use quilts to sleep.

I had a lightning strike a few years ago that fried my computer and my phone line. Everyone said “You should have used a surge protector,” and of course I had been using one. But I got a more expensive one.
BTW I was told that as they get old they don’t work as well….is that bs?

Sometimes, but usually the problem is that they do their jobs, which is to fry themselves so your computers don’t fry, but then don’t let you know that. I don’t know how you test for that, at least with ordinary household tools. If you ever get another one, I’d suggest looking for one that has an indicator light or something for when that happens.

the good news is that they strung brand new electrical cable from the street all the way to the house where it connects on the roof cap thingie. and i have a claim form from the utility to fill out for the tv.

but yeah, from now on i’m gonna be real picky when i look for surge protectors. the two (cable and tv) were both fried and i didn’t know it until they got hooked up the voltmeter thingie afterwards.

My compter crashed twice trying to watch Ray.
Today the sun came out in the afternoon with the wind, I Jogged the horse trails on the hills above us. They break up the dunes into deep sand that builds the legs and lungs with a panoramic view of the Bay. Then gardened and cleaned good. Hit the 6pm vinyasa yoga class and she really put us through some paces it was great. Sorry you are having a tough stretch on limited funds. How about bringing the pod to Portland and having a garage sale? They also have great swap meet to replace TV.

wow i didn’t know that. i figure i will need 3… the one that the computer was plugged into held steady but the one for the tv and the one in the cable closet are good for doorjams only now….

I got one about that price. Well, maybe $40, but still…I was without a computer for a year, and I wasn’t fooling around with no $6 surge thingy.

my computer is hooked up to a more expensive one… don’t remember the price. it survived as did the laptop. otherwise, i wudda had to head to the pod house in portland to get my desktop outta the pod and there wudda been a lot more swear words tossed about.

Yes, and pretty inexpensive. APC and Tripp are both good ones, and you can get the smallish ones (good for a laptop or a small desktop) for $50 or so. Bigger ones for a big desktop or a tower $100-$150.

Great for power outages. I used one to power a little mini desklamp thing for a couple of days so I could read at night.

The good UPS’s are pricey, but you are lucky – surges rarely get past your brick-charger.

You might want to see about getting a backup charger, so if this one took a hit, but has yet to die, you will be ready.
